Ramblings From The Editor

C

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ‘n’ ends... by Jack Wright

an’t say I’ve ever been good at small talk. I attended the reopening of Island Grill last week and, as always, I found it painful to keep chatting about the weather and how long the winter was. To be honest the winter wasn’t long enough for me — we needed more time to get all of our books to the printers and to get all of our stores revamped for summer. So, other than sharing a dirty joke with Guy Portewig (of Cucina Rosa), I really didn’t have much to say for myself. However, I WOULD like to wish the Herforth family, who run Island Grill, all the best for the new season — they’ve changed up the menu from Caribbean-influenced to modern American, using local produce, and the decor got a redo from Viviane Rowan, who runs that lovely, classy store called White on Ocean Street. Good luck folks! At the same event, I ran into Jeff Gernitis, who’s trying his best but doing a bad job of containing his enthusiasm about the news that he and a couple of partners have bought the Pilot House. Jeff is one of the owners of Peter Shields Inn and has done a great job of running that beloved Georgian revival establishment on Beach Avenue. And I’m excited about his plans for the Pilot House, even though they need to be kept under wraps until the deal to buy the bar and restaurant from Frank and Deirdre Hineline is complete. The rumor mill had it that Jeff merely wanted the liquor license from the Pilot House so that he could transfer it to the Peter Shields and then quickly flip the Pilot House building. But that ain’t true — the Pilot House will remain a bar and restaurant

contractor put the kibosh on owner Vicki Watson’s plans. Vicki has been trying to find a partner for the project and there were some interested parties, but nothing has come to fruition. It would be sad to see a summer come and go without the Merion Inn open for business. The first spring edition of the Exit 0 International Jazz Festival is happening from May 30 to June 1. Organizer Michael Kline, as he does for the fall festivals, has put together a killer lineup that truly IS worldclass. We published a program specially for the event, but if you can’t get your hands on a copy, visit www. exit0jazzfest.com. Hot tip: The POPS passes, at $38, represent mind-bogglingly good value. For that you get to see every concert over the weekend, with the exception of the Convention Hall events. Those passes are available at the Exit Zero stores at 109 Sunset and 316 Beach. Also going on is the 25th annual Cape May Music Festival. For a great roundup of that event, you should consult the May color issue of Exit Zero. Failing that, visit www.capemaymac.org. There is a great variety of performers appearing in Cape May, so go get your culture on! Who says this town is just a pretty face. And if you like Peter Nero and his Philly Pops, they will be appearing at Convention Hall for the third year running (this Saturday, May 24), and ticket prices have come down to $75 because, says Cape May City, of increased sponsorship. Tickets from www.discovercapemaynj.com. Until next time, have a splendiferous holiday weekend in America’s Original Seaside Resort.

and will even retain its name, which I think is an excellent idea. Watch this space for more details on the Pilot House next month. And staying on restaurant news, best of luck to the good folks who have relaunched Martini Beach (above Cabanas on Beach and Decatur) as M’Ocean. I have to be honest — I’m not in love with the name, but I’ve always liked that spot a lot and look forward to experiencing the new food and vibe. Not such good news is the fact that the beloved Merion Inn is no closer to reopening for the season. Its doors have been locked ever since a financial dispute with a

Life In The Fast Lane With Clarkie A tribute to John Morris, a prodigious businessman who passed away recently. Story by Susan Tischler.

H

e was the ultimate entrepreneur. At one time, Cape May businessman John “Clark” Morris owned Clark’s Diner, Clark’s Bike Shop, Clark’s Hot Dogs and Frozen Coke and Clark’s Oil Service. Clarkie, as he was known to his friends, died in March after a battle with cancer. Mimi, his wife of 50 years, took a few moments recently to share some of her memories of what it was like living in Clark’s Fast Lane. To begin, this Pittman, New Jersey native summered in Cape May as a child. His parents owned a home on the beach in Cape May Point, but that was washed away in the infamous ’62 Nor’easter. Clarkie continued to vacation in Cape May when he and Mimi married, and in 1966 he launched his entrepreneurial career with the opening of Clark’s Hot Dog Shop adjoining Petrov’s Candy Store on Beach Avenue. The next year he bought the building on the corner of Jackson Street and Beach

Avenue and opened Clark’s Diner. Open 20 hours a day, Clarkie ran the restaurant. Mimi came in to work the lunch hour. They had a three-year-old daughter, Mari, and a second daughter, Lorraine, who was born that same year. When asked how she helped run a 20-hour-a-day diner with an infant and a toddler, Mimi said she hired a babysitter to help during the lunch hour. “But one day,” said Mimi, “She [the babysitter] lost Mari. There I was running up and down the beach looking for her and I told Clarkie he could take this restaurant and stick it. The next day we had two babysitters. You needed as many babysitters as you had kids.” And they ended up with five kids: Mari, Lorraine, Madeleine, Clark, Jr, and Jane. Clarkie carved out a space at the back of the diner on Jackson Street and opened Clark’s Bikes, which later morphed into Clark’s Hot Dogs and Frozen Coke or, as it was known to locals, “The home of the

50-cent hot dog.” Mimi laughed when asked how she raised five children and helped run all those businesses: “Every time Clark said he had another idea, I just looked at him and said, ‘Oh god, what are we doing now?’” One distinct difference in their styles was that Clarkie liked to be front and center working with the public, but Mimi preferred to stay in the background. “I was always a homebody,” said Mimi, “He was always out and about. One time my daughter Madeleine was at the Pilot House with him and someone came up to her and said, ‘Your father is fantastic. How did he raise five kids all by himself?’ My daughter said, ‘What are you talking about? I have a mother.’ But he liked being out and I liked being at home. We were total opposites in everything.” Clarkie also loved fishing. When asked why he named his boat the Screaming Mimi, Mimi laughed and said, “Because he bought a boat and I screamed. It didn’t do any good, but I screamed anyway. No, you’ve heard the expression, ‘Having the screamin’ mimis?’” In 1984, Clarkie rented the restaurant and it became Palace Pizza. He continued to run Clark’s Hot Dogs. At various times his children, Madeleine and Clark, Jr took over the pizzeria (Clark’s Pizza and Madeleine’s Pizza) and hot dog stand, but Clarkie and Mimi had walked away from retail by 1986 when he started Clark’s Oil and Belle-wood

Clarky with his wife Mimi at the corner of Beach and Jackson.

Oil Service. “He had Clark’s Oil Service on one side of the truck and Belle-wood Oil Service on the other side of the truck. He said, ‘That way, if they see Belle-Wood, I’ll get more customers up in the Belleplain and Woodbine area.’ So sometimes he pulled up to someone’s house the wrong way and they saw Clark’s Oil Service, and people would say, ‘No, we’re doing business with Belle-wood.’ He’d say, ‘Well, hold on and I’ll turn the truck around.’” Mimi and Clarkie, who continued to raise their children in Pittman, New Jersey, finally moved to Cape May year-round in 1985 when their youngest two children, Clark, Jr and Jane, were still in grammar school and Madeleine was in high school. In 2002 Clarkie rented the hot dog space to Tommy Snyder, aka HotDog Tommy’s, which will celebrate its 12th year this summer. The former Clark’s Diner and Clark’s Pizzeria is now a retail store called Shark Bait. Clarkie retired from business completely in 2005, but he never retired from the idea of business. He was a man who always had an idea for a new Cape May enterprise. Every summer morning he could be found sitting around the breakfast table at the former Lemon Tree Restaurant on the Washington Street Mall and later the Captain’s Cove Restaurant at Schellenger’s Landing, talking with other businessmen about doing business in the town he loved — Cape May.

TALK OF THE TOWN

The Old Fogey

Happy Anniversary Convention Hall will host Peter Nero and the Philadelphia POPS over Memorial Day weekend, which will be the third time the orchestra have graced Convention Hall since it reopened in 2012. It’s a storied building — this is the third iteration to grace our town — and in celebration of this fact, we’re printing memories of convention halls past. “My parents were very religious, and I wasn’t allowed to be a dancer. But for whatever reason, I was allowed to do the Mexican hat dance and the bunny hop during the kids’ dances at Convention Hall; this was different in their minds. And how I loved it. But jeans? Absolutely not. Going to Convention Hall was a formal event... my great grandmother wore white gloves. She put them on me, too, and I wasn’t allowed to get them dirty.” — Marilyn Gravenstine Lafferty, on the first hall, built in 1917 and destroyed by the Nor’easter of 1962. — Diane Stopyra

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

saw a fellow selling balloons the other day. Intrigued and wishing to share my own fascinating anecdotes about balloons, I wandered over with a wary Young Albert (he mistrusts both balloons and people who inflate them, for reasons that will become clear) and inquired — as one does — “are those India rubber?” Imagine my concern when the wretch merely shrugged and muttered “made in China, buddy” and continued making what seemed to me to be a set of genitals. I detest a lack of manners and so with a nod of my head set Albert on him, and there followed a 20-second series of shrieks and pops. But the encounter got me thinking about Cape May’s singular history with latex. I brought the first rubber tree back to Cape May and founded what was America’s first commercial latex milking plantation. Our citizens were soon resplendent in latex rain capes, hats, boots then latex gloves and finally suits and just about every other garment a person can wear. Regrettably, the city began to attract a very different sort of person, usually pallid Europeans who dressed in skintight latex and who had a

glassy expression as they squeaked around town. When the first latex bathing costumes began to appear, I decided enough was enough and laws were passed. It took many years, though, before the Boiler Room’s Friday night Rubber Ball party died out, and only then because an August heatwave broiled 30 rubber-clad patrons. Soon, we became the world’s premier producer of balloons. And not those paltry efforts children tow around today, with a lifespan of 30 seconds. Ours were stout creations 10 feet across, and took 10 men an hour to inflate. Once we worked out how

The Washington Inn

to produce helium, and have them lift off, the city was a riot of color and the happy screams of children floating off into the clouds. That gave us the idea of removing unwanted visitors from Wildwood and those criminals found guilty of offences that did not warrant the Ducking Stool: a brace of ballons would be fastened to their belts and they would be waved off, to disappear eastwards at high altitude. I remember the day that our success became our downfall: we had an order of 50,000 pre-inflated balloons for New York City World’s Fair, and had them all pumped and bobbing along the beachfront. Well, a freak gust of wind caught them and Cape May was torn free of the mainland and towed 30 feet out to sea before a flock of seagulls got in the way and burst them. Overnight, the latex industry was over, all profits forfeited to build bridges to the mainland and put a lining on what we had to call the “canal”. Since that day, balloons over 3 feet in diameter have been forbidden on penalty of exile to Philly. Though we have a secret stash sufficient to float Cape May to safety in the event of a zombie apocalypse.

TALK OF THE TOWN

The Answer Lady

Happy Anniversary Convention Hall will host Peter Nero and the Philadelphia POPS over Memorial Day weekend, which will be the third time the orchestra have graced Convention Hall since it reopened in 2012. It’s a storied building — this is the third iteration to grace our town — and in celebration of this fact, we’re printing memories of convention halls past. “Looking at the destruction right after the storm, I remember crying my eyes out. I was seven, Convention Hall is the place I’d had my dance recitals, and when you’re seven, what you care about after a devastating storm are your recitals. My mother told me it would be okay... but it was traumatic to see that beautiful building torn to pieces. I couldn’t comprehend the huge hole that made it so you could see straight through to the ocean. I can still see the curtains for stage blowing in the wind.” — Cheri Zebrowski, on the destruction of the first Convention Hall after the ‘62 storm. — Diane Stopyra

Wise answers to your perplexing questions and quandaries

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@ exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I have been dating this woman for about six months and I have strong feelings for her, but the other day I looked at my cellphone and saw she had read a text sent to me. She was the only person in the apartment and the message was marked as having been read. I asked her, “Did you happen to pick up my cell by mistake?” Then I followed with, “So, you didn’t read the text message sent to me an hour ago?” I assured her, if she did, it was okay, but each time she denied it. This is a trust issue; how should I handle it? – Trust Worthy? Dear Trust Worthy This woman is not your child, she is your prospective life partner. There is only one way to deal with this and that is head on. As in, “I know you read my text message, and

it bothers me that you won’t admit it.” The Answer Lady suspects she is already laden with guilt and if she is, you can work it out. Perhaps she is the one with trust issues and needs to be reassured she is not repeating a bad cycle of choices. If she continues to lie, you have bigger problems than just her overwhelming curiosity. So, this small incident is, in a way, a defining moment for your relationship. Hopefully, at the end of it, you will both get a good laugh out of how some-

thing so silly can escalate out of hand. Then you will take her to George’s for dinner and a moonlight walk on the beach afterwards. The Answer Lady likes happy endings Dear Answer Lady I recently received an invitation to a co-worker’s wedding. In the invitation, a note was included that the bride and groom would prefer money as a wedding gift. I usually do give money for a wedding gift, but I find this request presumptuous and déclassé. What do you think and what do you suggest I do? — In a Snit Dear In a Snit The Answer Lady is in total agreement. No one likes being ordered about, especially when it comes to their pocketbook. The Answer Lady also suspects the happy couple has not registered anywhere, leaving few options except to march down to Swain’s Ace Hardware and buy them a toaster, a toaster oven or an iron. Or any combination of the three. They can always exchange the items. If you want to take the high road, but still not kowtow, buy them a gift certificate to a romantic restaurant like Peter Shields Inn (PSI) or The Ebbitt Room.

You know you don’t want to miss it!

THE BIG EXIT ZERO Q&A

CAPE MAY FIRE CHIEF JERRY INDERWIES Interview by DIANE STOPYRA Photograph by ALEKSEY MORYAKOV

J

erry Inderwies joined the Cape May Fire Department in 1987, at the age of 18, and he became chief 10 years ago. May 30 marks his last day before retirement, so we sat down with him to discuss the man behind he helmet. Now that you’re retiring, you can say: who is your favorite firefighter? I can’t say. How about who I’ll miss the most? Lieutenant David Halbruner died of cancer in 2010 and of course we lost Lieutenant Andy Boyt the following year. I still get upset talking about it. They were both mentors to me. I can’t say enough about how much they’re

missed all the time. Their passing, losing them as best friends, was probably the worst moment of my career. The whole department was in tough shape from top to bottom. But we got through it. We’re still bruised, but we survived. Did you always want to be a firefighter? My dad started as a volunteer in Cape May in ’67. My great-grandfather was, too, up in East Orange in the ’20s, and my grandfather in Union, New Jersey in the ’50s and ’60s, and I had cousins who did this as well. It’s been in my blood my whole life. I’d jump in the car and go with my dad on runs. Wasn’t that against the rules? This was back in the ’70s; we didn’t have rules then. Do you remember the specific moment as a kid when you thought, ‘This is what I want to do’? I remember being in Cape May Elementary when the Windsor Hotel burned.

You could see the smoke and a couple of us actually started walking out of school toward the fire. What did your mother do? She stayed home with us as kids, then worked with a real estate agent and then for the county court system. How many siblings do you have? Two sisters. I’m the baby. I learned a lot of things ahead of my time because of them — about music and different things. Makes me feel old! What were you like as a kid? I was a hell-raiser. Ever arrested? Another thing you can say now that you’re retiring… No, but the police took me home a few times. I remember having words with a summer cop. Do you remember your first fire? It was fatal. I was a senior in high school and when we showed up to the apartMay 22-June 4, 2014 EXIT ZERO Page 73

THE EXIT ZERO Q&A From Page 73 ment building on Elmira Street next to Depot Market, the man was already dead. Did that give you pause about continuing on this career path? No, you have to move on. Tell me about the oddest call you’ve responded to. A cliché — a cat in a tree. A firefighter climbed a ladder with a burlap bag to put the cat in, but when he got to the top, the cat ran down the back of the tree, so he dropped the bag. Its owner got hysterical — she thought her cat was inside. And the funniest? We got called for a water rescue; you could see a body f loating in the water, and one of the police officers went out in uniform to retrieve it. Then we find out that the coast guard had been doing training and they’d lost a dummy and didn’t tell anybody. Scariest call? Probably the biggest of my career was the Devonshire on South Lafayette Street in March of 2001. A police officer came up and said a lady couldn’t find her husband and she thought he was still inside. At that point, it was really involved. The paint was smoking off of the houses behind the Devonshire on North Street, and blinds were melting to windows. Turns out the man was at Wawa getting coffee. It worked out; we were able to save the other houses. Of course,

Page 74 EXIT ZERO May 22-June 4, 2014

the Devonshire was a total loss but it was before we got there. Why are you retiring now? After 26 years, it’s time for a change and to pursue other interests, though I’m not 100 percent sure what those are yet. I’m going to catch up on things around the house and I’m going to relax. It will be a nice to go out for a drink without having people say, “There’s the chief; I hope there’s not a fire tonight.” Because my dad was a councilman and then mayor, and then I was chief, I’ve had a status my whole life. It will be nice to be just a normal citizen. Won’t you miss it, too, though? Oh yeah. I will miss seeing the guys every day and being around them. The people here are passionate about what they do, and when a call comes in, they give 110 percent. It’s a team. I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the older members — Barney Dougherty, Harvey Williams, Herb Anger. They’ve all been here 50, 60 years and they’re still active. I’m going to stay on as a volunteer, and I can stop in for coffee, but it won’t be quite the same. Camaraderie, sure, but isn’t there a lot of prank-playing in the fire department, too? Not as much now as there was when I was new here, but there were some pretty good ones. Somebody asked me once to go inside and get a screwdriver and when

I walked through the doorway I had a big bucket of water poured over my head. Will you stay in Cape May? Absolutely. Why do so many firefighters have mustaches? I used to, too. I don’t know! Tell me about your family. I have three daughters. The oldest is 18, graduating from Wildwood Catholic, and going to Immaculata. My 15-year-old is in Wildwood Catholic; my 12-year-old is in Cape Trinity Catholic. My wife is a teacher there. What’s been the most rewarding part about serving this community, in particular? Protecting the town and the people I grew up with. And protecting the Victorian structures that can’t be replaced. But you probably know some of these places — and the people who own them — very well. Hasn’t that been difficult, to separate your emotions from your job? I’ve treated people I know, done CPR on people I know, used a defibrillator on people I know. You just focus. You do what has to be done. What are people surprised to know about this department? It’s close to 2,000 calls, between fire and EMS, that we respond to in a given year. How have things changed since you’ve been here? Volunteerism has declined; there are more career firefighters. And

there are more rules, more awareness of breathing in smoke and what’s in the smoke and how to save yourself if you ever get trapped. What is the wildest, craziest thing you’ve ever done? Probably when a bunch of us went out boogie-boarding right before a hurricane. That’s not setting a very good example… The waves were big! We started at Steger and within five minutes we were down by Grant Street. What’s your hidden talent? I coach JV girls’ basketball and sixth, seventh and eighth-grade softball. Does that count? Do you feel like a badass having been chief? No, I kind of feel like it could have been anyone here at the time. I took on the task with the help of everyone because I was young, 35, and I became chief over some other firefighters who had been here a little longer, which was difficult to get through. Everyone helped me tremendously. I can’t say enough about how passionate everyone is here about this work. What’s the least badass/tough firefighter thing about you? I’m a neat freak. Fires depicted in movies — pretty accurate? No. Really, you can’t see your hand in front of your face. Any regrets? No; I wouldn’t change a thing.

At the tender age of seven, I personally hit the boards, only to have my finger crushed by some careening youngster.” —Jon Roth “It’s possible that I’m the one who rolled over this person’s hand; I was free-wheeling along to the Aladdin soundtrack... I was at a point in my life where a couple’s skate was the most nerve-wracking things in the world.” — Chris Carbone, on the second hall, which closed in 2008. — Diane Stopyra

F

Tom Sims on a special night for Cape May Film Festival

or one special night, Cape May Stage and Cape May Film Festival, with support from Christine Petrick and David Green, will present a screening of a celebrated documentary, The Power Broker. The film tells the story of Whitney Young, one of the most renowned and controversial leaders of the civil rights era. As the filmmakers say, “[Whitney] was head of the National Urban League [and] fought for the rights of thousands but was often criticized by the very people he was trying to help.” This “pay what you want” one night event will take place Sunday, May 25, at 7:00pm at Cape May Stage. Special guest for the event will be Marcia Young Cantarella, Whitney Young’s daughter. In a special interview for this column, Marcia says there are misconceptions about the leadership of the civil rights movement. “The lions share of attention has been on Dr King,“ says Marcia, “however the massive work which began in the 1950s and continued into the early 1970s was really a powerful collaborative that had several essential leaders. My father

was a key leader in two respects — one was managing the relationships among the others which included Roy Wilkins of the NAACP (the movement’s legal arm), Dr King and James Farmer and John Lewis who represented the student movement.” Marcia says that also present and important during that time were Dorothy Height of the National Council of

Negro Women and A. Philip Randolph of the Railway Workers Union representing labor. “My father was the mediator — a lifelong role for him,“ she says. “Second, it was his vision and close ties to President Johnson that actually lead to the form and framing of the Civil Rights Act and the War on Poverty. The idea of Equal Employment Opportunity was my father’s and the movement toward corporate social responsibility grew out of his relationships with private sector leaders. The film sets the record straight.” The film also depicts a family legacy of a focus on education and social concern, says Marcia. “This is a lifestyle that many do not associate with people of color,“ she says. “My grandkids will be the fifth generation to go to college and we have never known real poverty in those five generations.” Christine Petrick says, “The crucial work of Whitney Young Jr, and other Civil Right leaders, have all too often been either under emphasized or completely overlooked. David and I are thrilled to help bring this important film to Cape May.”

The Activity Column

Ravaged By Flames Cape May has been beset by large fires dating back to the Mount Vernon Hotel tragedy in 1856 that killed six people. In the case of nearly all of them, arson was to blame and nobody was found guilty. With the Mount Vernon, one woman was arrested, but was later released. The following year, the Mansion House and Kersal was lost, but there were no leads. In 1869, a fire ravaged much of the business district, centering on the United States Hotel, which was filled with guests at the time. Numerous prior attempts were made to ignite the hotel, but no one was ever charged. In 1878, a great fire destroyed much of the town. It began in the Ocean House on Perry Street and was the work of an arsonist. Although one man was arrested and tried, he was found not guilty. In 1979, the Windsor Hotel was lost to fire — but again, nobody was held accountable. — Ben Miller

Remembering the reason for the Memorial Day weekend. By Catherine Dugan

M

emorial Day is set aside to remember soldiers who gave their lives fighting under the star-spangled banner. It’s also a good time to contemplate the history of that flag that waves so proudly over buildings large and small in Cape May. The flag has roots in New Jersey. Most sources, including the journals of the Continental Congress, credit Francis Hopkinson, a Congressman who represented New Jersey and a signer of the Declaration of Independence, with the design. Born into a wealthy Philadelphia family in 1737, Hopkinson was a songwriter, poet and artist as well as a dedicated civil servant. His “My Days Have Been So Wondrous Free” is one of the first songs composed in the American colonies, and his “The Battle of the Kegs,” mocking British sailors, was a popular wartime tune. After the war, he advocated for the Constitution and served as a federal district judge. He died suddenly in 1791, at the age of 53. Hopkinson submitted a design for the flag while serving on the Continental Navy Board. He may have been inspired by pre-

cursors like the flag of the navy, which featured a rattlesnake upon alternating red and white stripes, and a New England flag, which featured red, white and blue stripes with a pine tree set in a rectangle in the upper left corner. Years later, in a letter to the Board of Admiralty, Hopkinson asked to be paid with “a quarter cask of the public wine” for the design of the flag, as well as his work on other government seals. The board denied the request, deeming the work part of his ordinary duties. Legend credits Betsy Ross of Philadelphia with sewing that first flag, though

there is some doubt over this. Her reputation may be due to the promotional abilities of her grandson a hundred years after the fact. William J. Canby asserted that Robert Morris and General George Washington brought grandmother Ross a sketch — presumably from Hopkinson — from which she created the flag. Cornelia Bridges and Rebecca Shaw, also of Pennsylvania, and John Shaw, of Maryland, have also been credited. Mary Pickersgill sewed the large flag that flew over Fort McHenry and inspired Francis Scott Key to write “The Star Spangled Banner.” That flag is on display at the Smithsonian. On Memorial Day, pay tribute to those who fought and died under the stars and stripes. Fly the flag at half-staff until noon, then raise it to the top. Join in a National Moment of Remembrance at 3pm. Visit the All Veterans Memorial at the World War II Tower on Sunset Boulevard. Admission is $6 for adults; $2 for active and retired military with ID. One child is free with paying adult, $3 for each additional child; $2 for active & retired military. There is free parking, and portions are wheelchair accessible.

Bird Droppings

The good doctor

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

While Dr Emlen Physick was a medical doctor who graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1878 and was elected a Fellow in 1909, he never practiced medicine. Construction on his Cape May estate began almost immediately after his graduation and the following year he moved into the home with his mother, Frances Ralston, and his aunt, Emilie Parmentier. Dr Physick did not establish a medical practice in Cape May as his family expected. Instead, he chose to run two local farms he purchased and bred animals on his estate. He also had a greenhouse built near his house. In his spare time he involved himself in local civic matters and the local business community. Upon his death, it was said by the College of Physicians of Philadelphia that he “possessed a kind and generous nature and was beloved by those who came in contact with him.” — Ben Miller

I

Need a Plumber?

shudder to think how close I came to a boring life. Thank heaven for birds In the summer of 1958 I was just a typical suburban brat doing my best to tease a little excitement out of a summer day. Suddenly I spied my neighbor chum Donna racing toward our house with some mystery object in each hand. These turned out to be binoculars and a field guide to birds. “Look what I got for my birthday,” she proclaimed. I’m not sure how I responded but I was dully impressed. Not toys, not apparel but real grownup presents. To a child there is nothing more important than growing up. Silly as this ambition is, it is also true. “Lets go on a bird hike.” she encouraged. And we did. The very next morning at O-dark-thirty. Donna and I knew nothing about birds except for the universal insight granted all humans — that birds are most active at dawn. “The early bird catches the worm.” Actually birds are active all day but getting up at dawn stropped an edge of excitement to our adventure — our first foray into the field of bird study.

Sadly I don’t recall what birds we discovered on that monumental day. All I can say is that whatever we saw was enough to captivate us and propel us on a path paved with wonder and discovery. A path that has taken me all over the world and most recently to the windows overlooking the bird feeders here at Cape May Bird observatory where I indulged myself in my favorite pastime: watching birds for the pleasure it brings. Watching birds is like living inside a kaleidoscope enveloped by an ever-shifting

pattern of color and forms. But what if I hadn’t been standing on our lawn when Donna came running. What if I’d been inside watching TV, and Donna had run into John or Tom instead of me? Then there would have been no tours to the Amazon or Antarctica, or East Africa in search of birds. I wouldn’t have the array of fascinating friends I covet, today. My life would have been as bland as a suburban lawn (one bereft of dandelions and clover). Of course, I don’t spend every day traveling in acclaimed eco-tourist destinations like Peru and Kenya. Most of my birdwatching, arguably the most gratifying avocational forays, happen right here. But if it so happens that you were inside watching TV when Donna ran by with the two presents that have the power to change lives, it’s not too late. Go on a morning field trip organized by CMBO — you won’t even have to get up at dawn. But you will have to get a walk schedule from CMBO, 707 East Lake Drive. Or visit www.njaudubon.org and click on Cape May Bird Observatory. Enjoy your lifetime of discovery. Sorry you got a late start.

Community Radio is Alive in Cape May County and It’s Better Than Ever WCFA 101.5 FM - Cape May’s Hometown Radio Station

Cape May’s Only Community Radio Station

WCFA 101.5 FM started broadcasting in 2006. This year we celebrate our 8th anniversary! Combining an eclectic blend of music - jazz, singer-songwriter and more - with community information, arts and educational programs, WCFA-LP broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from the Wildwood Crest water tower to Cape May County.

Volunteers Do It All!

101.5 FM is an all volunteer-run station! Yes! Let me repeat that! Our DJ’s, engineers, in-studio talent and programming committee are hard-working volunteers and members of CCA! We are currently recruiting for talent and technical help in all areas.

Listener & Business Supported Radio

General and program underwriting pay the broadcasting costs of WCFA. Thank you for that! We still need your advertising and underwriting support!

DJS AND ON-AIR TALENT

Plans to expand our programming in 2014 means we need support! We are actively seeking program ideas and talent for daily 6-9am talk and information programming.

Now the Best Hometown Radio Station Can Be Everywhere!

WCFA 101.5 is now streaming over the Internet. You can hear our unique blend of Jazz, Singer-Songwriter and more, 24/7, and wherever you are! You can listen to your favorite DJs, and tune in to hear “What’s Goin’ On?” here in Cape May. Enjoy us Down the Shore, and take us home with you. Take us to the Beach, or on your next Business Trip. Listen on your laptop, your tablet, and your phone. In Cape May, we’re in your car at 101.5 fm. Go to LISTEN. WCFA-LP.ORG and click LISTEN.

Live Remotes

WCFA 101.5 can be found all over the County covering festivals and the events that the County loves. You heard us live from the MAC Crab Fest, the Exit 0 International Jazz Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival, the Anniversary Celebration in Whitesboro, to name a few!

RECRUITING FOR VOLUNTEERS! ENGINEERS

Ongoing broadcasting and new internet streaming require top-notch talent. Computer support, broadcast tower support, website support and more. Intern slots available too!
