Ramblings From The Editor
L
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
ike a lot of people, I always associated the Caribbean with, you know, paradise, though I’d never actually been there — until last week. And much of what I experienced was equal to what I had imagined — impossibly turqouise water, pristine white-sand beaches, night skies awash with stars, and lots of annoying references to “island time” (which is almost as annoying as Cape Maybe — let’s not use our location as an excuse for being a slacker). So how come I didn’t feel like I was in paradise while taking in the attractions of St John, on the US Virgin Islands? And how come I often wondered what was going on in Cool Cape May as I slowly roasted on those glorious beaches? (I guess I wasn’t really paying proper attention when my beloved chickadee told me the UV Index was 11 while we were there, and I can promise you I will never again use spray-on sun lotion — I have the stripes to prove how ineffective that method is.) Probably the first reason is that I don’t really get a kick out of lying on a beach all day — gets old after the first couple hours, unless you have a killer book (I did) and the sun isn’t turning your skin beet red in front of you (it was). And once you come off those beaches, I don’t think the likes of St John operates in the same league as our little seaside town when it comes to offering good things to do. The shopping was mainly mediocre, and very overpriced. There were, though, restaurants on a par with Cape May’s — funnily enough, our best meal came at a place called Rhumb Lines, which reminded me of 410 Bank Street.
not the case when I made an ass of myself at Townbank beach recently, despite the expert tutelage of my friend Victor Grasso, who is almost as adept in the water as he is with a paintbrush (you have to hate that about him). So the moral of the story? The Caribbean is great; Cool Cape May is greater. I never thought I would every compare the Emlen Physick Estate to Woodstock, and obviously I’m not really comparing it, but when myself and the aforementioned Grasso wondered through the grounds of that magnificent old building on Saturday, it felt like a whole new vibe had come to Cape May. For that we have to thank Michael Kline, whose new(ish) Exit 0 International Jazz Festival has been the best thing to hit town since HotDog Tommy’s Potato Tornado. And kudos also to the MidAtlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities and its longtime leader Michael Zuckerman. MAC, because it’s been around for five decades, is sometimes regarded as being a fusty old organization, but they remain tireless advocates for this city, and dovetailing their own Cape May Music Festival with the jazz festival was a master stroke and the kind of smart co-operation that sometimes is lacking in Cape May. Before Michael Kline came along, Cape May had been hosting jazz festivals for nearly 20 years, events which did a great deal to boost the town in the off-season. What Michael has done is build on that, adding a sexy dynamic that is much more inclusive. You don’t need to be a jazz geek to enjoy the sounds that were exploding all over Cape May last weekend. Kudos to all involved.

Especially when I looked at the menu and saw a dish devoted to 410”s legendary Chef Sing. Turns out that former 410 waiter Matt Gyuraki works at Rhumb Lines, and it was his idea to dedicate the dish. But you couldn’t walk the streets — it’s much too hilly and the sidewalks are either too narrow or non-existent. The driving was a lot of fun, though, if you like negotiating hairpin bends with gradients so steep you think the car is going to topple backwards (which I kinda do). I will miss one thing, though... the salty water provides so much buoyancy that it made a water clown like me look good on a standup paddleboard. By that I mean I could actually stand up on the paddleboard. Which was

TALK OF THE TOWN
The Old Fogey
Davy’s Lake Some memories of Davy’s Lake, that hidden watering hole where Cape May kids had their coming of age… Alexander Smida: “We’d carry six-packs to the beach in pillowcases over our shoulders. You could just pretend like you were fishing when the cops came around. Never mind that your cooler didn’t have squid in it. It was a good place to be bad, in an innocent kind of way. Jane Blaszczyk: “We’d bring guitars and play music. We were friendly with the cops. The police used to come and warn us when the police were coming!” Curtis Bashaw: “It’s a hidden gem where you can have your own moment. When you’re there, you’re discovering something new. It’s similar to what Walden Pond was to Thoreau, with just a little more grit or texture. It’s seen it all — the recklessness of youth and also the more contemplative years of adulthood. It’s a magical spot.” — Diane Stopyra
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
want you to look at your bare thigh. And I need you to compare it with the laminated Exit Zero Sunburn Matching Table that will have come in this issue of the newspaper. If you are in the “pink as a pig” to “100% magenta” range, then be aware that as of now, you will be liable for a $50 fine, for a new civil offense of “being an aesthetic embarrassment to Cape May”. This fine new law, and a slew of others, originated when I was in the steam room with some local movers and shakers, including the editor/publisher of this fine periodical. I had just complimented that Scotch brute on his fine tan, which I remarked gave him somewhat of the appearance of a golden-bearded buddha, and he was kind enough to say that I had achieved an allover mahogany hue, which is true enough. I make it a requirement of all who work and live in the D’Catur Mansion that a full-body tan is a must, and not just for the nakedping-pong pool parties we throw every Friday (oh come now, do not feign innocence in front of your friends: over 300 of you attend every one, and I have the lithographs to prove it). Not everyone manages my lus-
tre, of course: Kitchener, my manservant, achieves sallow beige and is very happy, while Young Albert’s fur stays the same no matter the tanning oil we apply (we did try shaving him one year, but the moment clippers were applied he went berserk, nipping off fingertips, the ends of noses and lips with foaming abandon). But the point is, we are all a uniform color. From the top of our heads to the tips of our toes, we are what Americans call “tan”. This is not easy: I allow/demand all staff and guests spend an hour in the Automatic Solarium Ray machine in the attic, a
The Washington Inn
device that stores up the sun’s rays from a foil collector on the roof, and saturates the device’s occupant with a day’s solar energy in an instant. This machine does take careful calibration and handling: the upside of any mistakes is that the recipient is easy to sweep up with a dustpan, and helps fertilize the roses. To assist in giving every visitor to our city an equally pleasing tan, we have made some tweaks to the Solarium Ray, mounting in on gimballs and elevating it on a platform with a 360-degree view (the very same mount for my 88mm anti-aircraft gun, a souvenir from Berlin in ‘45 and kept in fine condition for the day aliens/Tea Partyists invade). I will be up there with binoculars, looking for anyone who dares disrobe on the beach, and displays two-tone red/white skin. Kitchener will then swivel the Ray and once our Solar Goggles are on, I will depress the trigger for a second or two. Early trials have been promising, and other than the occasional melted patch of sand and drifting ash, I believe we can now render anyone any shade we choose, in under a second. Also, it makes fine toast.

TALK OF THE TOWN
The Answer Lady
Correcting The Picture The famous image of the old Mount Vernon Hotel, which was lost in a fire that took the lives of five people in 1852, is completely inaccurate. It’s been reprinted several times on postcards, in history books and online, but it shows something that never existed. It was merely an artist’s representation of the way the hotel was intended to look upon completion. The Mount Vernon was designed to be three-sided, with an open courtyard facing the ocean, just like St Mary’s in Cape May Point. At the time of the fire, only the eastern wing and the central section were completed. Work hadn’t yet begun on the western wing. Yet, the picture of the hotel with which we are all so accustomed is drawn from an angle northwest of the hotel, showing the middle portion with it’s six-story tower and flag in the center, and a western wing that was never built. — Ben Miller
Wise answers to your perplexing questions and quandaries
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My daughter called me the other night and asked me to come over before my grandson returned home from kindergarten. It seems his pigmy hamster got loose and was stuck in one of the glue traps she has set around the house to catch crickets. She wanted me to call Dr Moffatt at Cape May Veterinary Hospital to make an emergency house call, but I thought Doc Bob might not have tiny instruments to do the job. My wife wanted me to run over to the pet store and buy another one, but I thought that wouldn’t be right. Then, I said to myself, “Wouldn’t it be better to try and save the little bugger?” So I went over to Swain’s Hardware and bought a bottle of Goo Gone. I squeezed it onto the trap and then spritzed his tiny feet with it, but I also had to spritz his hiney, ’cause I thought,
“What if he’s constipated? That could kill him.” I’m happy to report he’s running around like a champ, but I’m wondering, what would the Answer Lady have done? — Pigmy Healer Dear Pigmy Healer This is one of the few times the Answer Lady is (almost) at a loss for words. Buying a substitute would not have been a choice for me. It is a bit dishonest and worse, I might get caught. After all, perhaps the coloring
would be off, and kids know their pets. Also, there might be a personality difference. However, neither would the Answer Lady be so resourceful as to think of Goo Gone. I applaud your splendid problem-solving skills and confess it would have been a call to Dr Moffatt for me, in the hopes that Cape May Veterinary Hospital has indeed invested in those tiny instruments. Dear Answer Lady I have a dear friend who always, and I mean always, picks up the check when we go out. I hesitate now to even ask her to lunch or dinner for fear she thinks I will assume she is paying. I love spending time with her, but I don’t like not being able to reciprocate. What to do? — One Way Street Dear One Way Street The Answer Lady will avoid the obvious, “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth” platitude and cut to the chase. It obviously gives your friend pleasure to make you happy. Why not accept it with grace and make her happy? Reciprocate by surprising her from time to time with a nice gift from Good Scents. Now that’s good sense. The Answer Lady is quite pleased with herself.

SOUTH JERSEY MARINA MARKETING MAN MARK ALLEN Interview by DIANE STOPYRA Photograph by ALEKSEY MORYAKOV
M
ark Allen wears many hats as marketing director for South Jersey Marina, but it’s not just his work that keeps him advocating for the sustainability of the Cape May Harbor – it’s also his passion. Seven years ago, he was one of the driving forces behind the launch of Harbor Fest, a celebration of the sea and Cape May’s maritime heritage happening June 14, and he’s still one of the event’s most eager volunteers. We wanted to know why… Did you always want to do what you’re doing? Heck no. What did you want to be as a kid? Well… the truth? If
you had asked me when I was eight years old, I’d have told you I’d like to be a black man because I always liked the way they sang. But I’ve done a lot of different things. I was in the military for 28 years; I f lew fighters in the marine corps and fighters in the air force, and tankers in the air force. I worked in construction for 21 years after that and I do what I do now, so I’m kind of a vagabond. What is your job at the marina? Bob [Glover] says I’m marketing coordinator. Which means….? A big part of my responsibility is getting sponsors for our tournaments, promoting the tournaments and all of our events. In the spring, I’m the manager of the boat show. Did you always have an appreciation for the magic of the harbor? I think I discovered it later on, although I’ve
always loved the water. I break out in hives when I get more than a couple of miles from the beach. How did Harbor Fest come to be? I swim every day at the Coast Guard base and on November 15 2007, I was driving to the pool. As I made my way by the Nature Center I noticed all this black oily smoke was drifting across Delaware Avenue. I looked for the source and there was this boat burning just off the beach across from the center, where all the smoke was drifting. I had noticed earlier — we all had — a number of sailboats that were littered around the harbor, half sunk or cracked up on the beach and rocks. I knew Gretchen [Whitman, Nature Center Director] vaguely at the time, so later in the day just to tease her, I called and said, ‘You’ve got a shipwreck on your beach.’ She got mad and said, ‘You don’t seem to understand. That’s my classroom June 5-June 18, 2014 EXIT ZERO Page 73
THE EXIT ZERO Q&A From Page 73 out there. Try keeping a nine-year-old boy off a shipwreck.’ So we got to talking and, long story short, we talked with a bunch of other people in Cape May who were also concerned about the hazard to navigation and to people using the water recreationally. A loose organization called the Harbor Partners got together and it was decided that three things needed to happen: First, legislation needed to change. That was Gretchen’s department. She went to Trenton and battled so that local authorities could have the power to do something about this. Next, we needed to clean up the harbor, and that’s where Phil Risco came in from Northstar Marine. He went out there with a barge, a big frontend clam loader, and he reached in and grabbed those rotted old boats, and took them to Two Mile Beach until we could figure out how to get them to a landfill. Third, we needed to come up with a way to pay him back. Harbor Fest was that way. Why were there so many abandoned boats? By 2007, an awful lot of people were into sailing. Some of them could not afford or did not want to buy insurance or did not want to register their boats. It was getting to the point where it was easier and cheaper to pull into a protected harbor like Cape May, open the seacock drain
Page 74 EXIT ZERO June 5-June 18, 2014
plug, and let it settle to the bottom. It was a huge issue coast to coast, and what happened here pales in comparison to what happened elsewhere. How has Harbor Fest evolved? People think it’s evolved into a street festival, because of the crafters and food and beer vendors. But we always wanted it to be more than that, a statement to remind people how easy it is to lose track of that harbor or let it get polluted. For Gretchen and I, the mission is the same; it’s a continuing crusade. In your opinion, do most people — even locals — have an understanding of what an awesome resource the harbor is? Absolutely not. Many people come for Harbor Fest or the Dragon Boat races and other events, but when we have a harbor cleanup to pick up trash we don’t get many volunteers. People are busy, and if it’s not in their face every day, I don’t know that they get it. In the spring, we invite people who work with the public — concierges, front desk people, restaurant employees — to a charter f leet reception so they can see what is available here for guests. One year, a woman showed up late so I gave her a tour, and when we got to the point where all of the docks come together, she said, ‘Oh my god. I’ve been driving by the marina for 25 years going to work and I
had no idea it was this beautiful.’ This isn’t uncommon. For a lot of people, we may as well be in Iowa. They don’t understand just how important the maritime industries are in the area. Is it true the actress Sally Starr lived here? In my office; it was her apartment. Any other fun harbor trivia? People often don’t realize it’s manmade. It’s only about 100 years old, and it was dug as a way to fill Sewell Point, where the Coast Guard base and housing is now. That used to be all wetlands, until the harbor was excavated to get fill. What’s your favorite harbor event? Harbor Fest is my baby. But as far as what I do for work, it’s the Viking and Ocean Showdown. The MidAtlantic Tournament is the richest marlin and tuna tournament in the world, boat for boat, but with the Viking Ocean Showdown, because there’e not a lot of money on the table, it’s just about having a good time. I know you’ve had a number of celebrities dock their yachts here. Any you can mention? Typically I don’t do that — we have to be really careful with that. When they come in, we make them stand in line to pay for fuel like anyone else. They love that they’re not treated special. There’s one singer no one recognizes because he wears his dirty, rotted baseball cap and
has four days growth. Most heartwarming memory from your time at the harbor? Easy. On the Friday night before Harbor Fest, we have the Blessing of the Waters. It’s a solemn occasion where a bunch of people gather at fisherman’s memorial to remember those who’ve lost their lives at sea. We did the first one in 2008 and at the end of it, when there was no one left, a woman came up to me and you could tell she’d been crying. She told me she said she wanted to thank me, and I said, ‘Well, thank you for joining us.’ She said, ‘No. You don’t understand. My family is on that wall, and this is the only place I can come to be near them. This is the first time this city has done anything to remember them.’ That rolled me back on my heels. What do you want people to know? That you can never let down your guard or your vigilance with the things you love, like your harbor. It’s as important as our Victorian architecture or our beaches. We are so fortunate here to have all of these things — god, we are so lucky. We have arts, music, beaches, architecture, the best restaurants on the east coast, and some of the freshest seafood in the world. I don’t want anyone to lose track of how important that little puddle is out there called the Cape May harbor.

TALK OF THE TOWN...
The Movie Column
Light It Up Some fun facts about those favorite harbingers of a Cape may summer, lightning bugs. Some people call them fireflies. Some people call them lightning bugs. Entomologist Kyle Rossner says there is probably a town somewhere in West Virginia that calls them sparkle bugs. “It depends on what the vernacular dictates,” he says. Fireflies aren’t flies at all, but beetles. They appear in lyrics by Taylor Swift and Mason Jennings. “Firefly you drew me to you,” says the former. “Your beauty shines and lights up the sky.” Their light turns off would-be predators, like birds and bats. The light also attracts mates. And sometimes, dinner. The females from one group mimic the flash patterns of females in another, so they can lure in their males and then eat them. Looking to see their show? Stick to wetlands, wet woods, wet fields. Peak season is June and July. —Diane Stopyra

t’s a classic line from the 1950 film Sunset Strip. Norma Desmond, a silent film actress played by Gloria Swanson, is approached by a fan who says, “You’re Norma Desmond. You used to be in silent pictures. You used to be big.” What is her classic comeback: “I am big. It’s the pictures that got small.” This is how I’m feeling about superhero movies. At first, I was thinking that I’m getting too old for superhero movies. Then I realized, I am young. It’s the superhero movies that got old!” The Amazing Spider Man 2 is Sony’s re-boot of a series that ended fairly dismally in my opinion the last time the webslinger trilogy came to an end way, way back in 2007 with Tobey Maguire in the lead role. Pause for reader to get subtle sarcasm. I say that trilogy ended dismally because there were too many villains, the plot was scattered, and the human interest impact was weak. Funny. That’s exactly what I’m saying about The Amazing Spider Man 2. What can I say about a movie that in what is supposed to be its most highly

emotional sequence leaves me feeling like, “Is this over yet?” And as if there weren’t enough bad guys up to that point to make me scratch my head and consult my score card to get caught up, there was yet one more villain to come. This film’s story wandered like a trail of webs with no real punch or character development
for that matter. It’s making bucketloads of cash in the box office, so a third installment in this series is already in the plans. I won’t be climbing the walls to get in line to buy tickets. The Cape May Film Society wants to let you know about a number of events coming up! On Monday, June 2, we’ll be screening a documentary about Martin Luther King’s march on Washington called The March at Cape May Stage. We will host several summer screenings at the East Lynne Theater Company starting with Wings (June 22) the first film to ever win an Oscar (a silent with live organ accompaniment!), and The High and the Mighty (June 29) starring John Wayne. A Delicious $25 Giveaway To The Original Fudge Kitchen Our roving photographer bumped into Jeff Magee and his son, Miles, from Champagne, Illinois, here on vacation. To sweeten the deal, we gave them a $25 gift certificate to spend at The Original Fudge Kitchen. How long was your drive here? Eighteen hours, but we stopped in Michigan. What brought you here? We’ve been coming to Avalon almost every summer since 1970. When I was a boy, we lived in PA so it wasn’t that far. What’s your favorite thing about Cape May? The pedestrian shopping area. Have you been to the beach? Not here, but at our cottage in Avalon. How big is your family? There’s four of us plus the grandparents. Miles, do you know what you want to be when you grow up? I have no idea. Jeff, what do you do for a living? I’m a music professor. Who’s your favorite artist of all time? Thelonious Monk and Miles Davis. What’s your favorite type of fudge? Chocolate! The winner of our next giveaway will get a $25 gift certificate to spend at Louisa’s Chocolate Bar. INTERVIEW AND PHOTOGRAPH BY GABI URDA... TO ORDER COPIES, PLEASE CALL (609) 770-8479

DID YOU KNOW...
Designing The Hall During the construction of today’s Convention Hall, there was much debate over the design. The architects had one vision and many residents wanted something different. This was made clear in a long string of public meetings that often became rather heated. A large portion of citizens wanted the new hall to have the same facade that graced the original from 1917 until 1962, when it was demolished after a nor’easter damaged it beyond repair. The architects declared that would be impossible, claiming the facade was built taller than the building and would act as a sail in any serious storm, ripping away from the rest of the structure. They failed to recognize that their theory had already been put to the test twice, in a 1944 hurricane and the 1962 nor’easter. The rear of the hall was destroyed each time, but the front facade escaped unscathed. — Ben Miller

Need a bigger boat? Gearing up for the South Jersey Shark Tournament. By Catherine Dugan
A
s the annual South Jersey Shark Tournament brings hundreds of boats to town on June 4, it’s worth noting that the modern motorboat is what makes big game sportfishing possible. Humans did not wait for the invention of the motor to go after “the big one,” of course. According to Australian archaeologist Sue O’Connor, early modern humans caught tuna and other challenging fish 40,000 years ago, using nets and trolling hooks on long lines. O’Connor unearthed the evidence of early anglers on East Timor, an island nation north of Australia. Although skeptics argue that the fish could have been caught from shore, O’Connor asserts that fast-moving juvenile tuna could only be caught using advanced maritime skills. The need for advanced skills attracted the gentry to the pursuit of big fish during the Victorian era. The leisure class pursued large land animals for the thrill of the chase, and for the trophies to commemorate their success, but it was almost the 20th century before big-game fish-
ing took off. After the invention of the motorized boat in 1898, naturalist C.F. Holder wrote the book on the subject, mixing scientific detail with exciting tales. Holder, who may have been the first man to catch a tuna on a rod and reel, founded the Tuna Club on Santa Catalina Island, California, and he shared his techniques for catching marlin, swordfish, shark and tuna with members like Stan Laurel, Charlie Chaplin and Hal Roach. The sport enjoyed by so many great storytellers lent itself to great stories, and it soon spread to the Atlantic Ocean, where

another storyteller, Ernest Hemingway became a fan and a promoter. Although Hemingway is often remembered for his less-than-successful fishing adventures, like an attempt to scare off sharks who were eating his catch by shooting them, thus sparking a feeding frenzy, and accidentally shooting himself in an attempt to put a reeled-in bull shark down, he was a successful fisherman who was said to be happiest aboard his boat, the Pilar. He saw something noble in the struggle between fisherman and fish, although he is said to have noted, “It could never be considered an equal contest unless the angler had a hook in his mouth as well.” The South Jersey Shark Tournament brings a thousand anglers to the area in boats showing more than a century of the sport’s improvements. The tournament is structured to provide the “best possible fishing hours, lucrative cash prizes, and an equal chance for boats of all sizes to compete.” The festivities wrap up with an awards party at the Canyon Club. Holder and Hemingway may be haunting the big tent.

Lower Cape May Regional High School Student Of The Week it was called “I’d Stay.” It was about an ex-boyfriend. He heard it and it mended our relationship. I think that’s pretty powerful.
ower Cape May Regional High School junior, Christina Congleton, 16, of Villas, is well known among faculty and peers for her stupefying skills in singing, guitar playing, and academics. Christina was chosen by her AP English teacher, Jackie Siscone, and was interviewed by Ms Siscone’s news media classes.
What kind of extracurricular activities are you involved with? I am heavily involved in Key Club International, Spanish Club, Mock Trial, Advanced Guitar Ensemble, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Tri-M Music Honor Society, the musical, and choir. I also hope to be accepted into the South Jersey Honors Choir next year. Only thirty five people are selected, and last year I was number thirty six.
What originally inspired you to follow in the footsteps of your musically inclined mother, Nicola Congleton? Well, I always knew that my mother sang very well and I loved it, but she never pursued a career in music. About a year and a half ago, my father, Frank Congleton, gave me a guitar. I taught myself how to play and have been writing my own Taylor Swift-inspired songs ever since.
Do you plan on pursuing a music career in the future? As much as I would love to travel the world with my guitar and play gigs at random bars and restaurants, I don’t think I would be able to sustain a living. That being said, I would like to major in math when I go to college, hopefully in Florida!
Of the three songs that you’ve written, which do you think was the most powerful? I’d have to say the most powerful song I’ve written was the first song I ever wrote; INTERVIEW BY LAUREN REILLY / PHOTOGRAPH BY FARRAH COLLINS

Beach Avenue The original Beach Avenue, known by many locals as Beach Drive, was constructed in the early 1870s and only extended from Ocean Street eastward to Howard. Within a few years it had been extended west through Cape May, South Cape May and up and around Cape May Point. Prior to Beach Avenue being built, each of the beachfront hotels and cottages had lawns that ended on the beach. The property owners erected fences to keep folks off their private beaches. All the beaches east of Howard, where the Stockton Hotel ended, were open to anyone. This is the origin of the Poverty Beach name and as each new property was constructed along Beach Avenue, Poverty was moved further east. Although the fences came down a century ago, most of the beaches remained privately owned until the 1970s, when the city was forced to purchase them to sell beach tags and to qualify for beach replenishment. — Ben Miller
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
I
recently took a little side trip to Cook’s Beach and was treated to the sight of massed flock of red knot that numbered more than 1,000. It’s the largest number I’ve seen in over a decade and a tribute to the wisdom of the moratorium on the harvest of horseshoe crabs, upon whose eggs the red knot and other shorebird species depend. The knot is a large sandpiper that breeds in the high Arctic and winters at the tip of South America. It is a bird designed to vault hemispheres but this strategy is predicated upon finding fuel. The critical refueling depot is Delaware Bay and the fuel the lipid-rich packets that are hoseshoe crab eggs. So why would a bird embrace such a dangerous and difficult strategy when other birds simply stay in one place all year? First, because the long-distance strategy allows red knot to tale advantage of the food riches that flourish in the Arctic in summer. Second, because they can. With their football-shaped bodies, blade-shaped wings and ability to pack on energy-rich fuel, red knots are designed for distance and speed. Crab eggs are not only energy-rich.
They are easy to digest. No eggs and the birds can’t put on the fat they need to reach the Arctic or survive when they get there. In early June, winter is still very much in the driver’s seat in the high Arctic. The angle of the sun says summer but the residual snow and ice hark to winter. So why don’t the knot just wait a few more weeks and arrive when conditions are more hospitable? Because summer is brief in the Arctic. To fledge young before winter closes in again, knot and other Arctic breeders need to get a jump on the season.
Life is always pushing the envelope. It’s why proto amphibians once left the safety of the sea and clambered up onto inhospitable shores, just as horseshoe crabs do today. To breed and then return to the sea. The natural world is amazing. So if you want to witness a National Geographic special unfolding in your own backyard, head on over to Cooks or Reeds Beach about two hours after a high tide and discover the marvel that is a red knot — the bird that vaults hemispheres and the horseshoe crab, a sea creatures whose tenure upon this planet vaults eons. Please do not cross into the roped-off areas where the birds feed. Feeding knot, ruddy turnstone and semipalmated sandpipers need space to feed. We in Cape May live in a biologically rich and critically important environment that as custodians of the planet we are obligated to maintain. To see a picture of red knot, go to www. birdcapemay.org and look under Cape Maygration. Enjoy the spectacle but don’t dawdle. By early June the birds will be gone, vaulting the Northern Hemisphere, chasing the sun.

Community Radio is Alive in Cape May County and It’s Better Than Ever WCFA 101.5 FM - Cape May’s Hometown Radio Station
Cape May’s Only Community Radio Station
WCFA 101.5 FM started broadcasting in 2006. This year we celebrate our 8th anniversary! Combining an eclectic blend of music - jazz, singer-songwriter and more - with community information, arts and educational programs, WCFA-LP broadcasts 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, from the Wildwood Crest water tower to Cape May County.
Volunteers Do It All!
101.5 FM is an all volunteer-run station! Yes! Let me repeat that! Our DJ’s, engineers, in-studio talent and programming committee are hard-working volunteers and members of CCA! We are currently recruiting for talent and technical help in all areas.
Listener & Business Supported Radio
General and program underwriting pay the broadcasting costs of WCFA. Thank you for that! We still need your advertising and underwriting support!
DJS AND ON-AIR TALENT
Plans to expand our programming in 2014 means we need support! We are actively seeking program ideas and talent for daily 6-9am talk and information programming.
Now the Best Hometown Radio Station Can Be Everywhere!
WCFA 101.5 is now streaming over the Internet. You can hear our unique blend of Jazz, Singer-Songwriter and more, 24/7, and wherever you are! You can listen to your favorite DJs, and tune in to hear “What’s Goin’ On?” here in Cape May. Enjoy us Down the Shore, and take us home with you. Take us to the Beach, or on your next Business Trip. Listen on your laptop, your tablet, and your phone. In Cape May, we’re in your car at 101.5 fm. Go to LISTEN. WCFA-LP.ORG and click LISTEN.
Live Remotes
WCFA 101.5 can be found all over the County covering festivals and the events that the County loves. You heard us live from the MAC Crab Fest, the Exit 0 International Jazz Festival, the Dragon Boat Festival, the Anniversary Celebration in Whitesboro, to name a few!
RECRUITING FOR VOLUNTEERS! ENGINEERS
Ongoing broadcasting and new internet streaming require top-notch talent. Computer support, broadcast tower support, website support and more. Intern slots available too!
