Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

ooks like the long, drawn-out, shameful saga that has plagued Cape May Police Department ever since its chief Rob Sheehan was demoted to captain in March of last year is about to end.

Sadly, Sheehan’s fate will be decided by the same city council that has been unwilling to give him his job back, flying in the face of common sense and evidence that showed he had done very little wrong.

City council is due to meet in a closed session this Friday to discuss what I understand will be a shortlist of four candidates.

Sheehan is on that list — the fact that he took first place in a recent chief of police exam should give him the advantage over less experienced candidates. But there are two members of city council who wouldn’t vote to give Sheehan his job back even if he was reincarnated as the Second Coming.

The other candidates for chief may well be up to the job, but that’s not the point — there shouldn’t have been a vacancy in the first place. Sheehan has been the victim of a witch hunt, the reasons for which have never

And now moving swiftly from treacherous doings in City Hall to treacherous conditions in the ocean... a couple of after-hour swimmers in North Wildwood recently found themselves a long way from shore and panicking. Whether they were caught in a rip current is unclear, though it’s probably safe to assume since rip current warnings have been popping up along the Jersey Shore in recent weeks, due to strong onshore winds. Fortunately, the two men were rescued by a couple of brave beachgoers armed with boogie boards.

We’re all aware of rip currents, but what ARE they exactly? In case you’re not clear (I’ve never been), they’re strong flows of liquid energy that shoot out to sea as much as 100 yards. They can pop up along any coastline, often when the normal flow of water is interrupted by, say, a jetty. There are nine jetties in little Cape May Point alone. That, coupled with the shape of the peninsula here and all of the tidal energy that comes with bay meeting ocean, makes the Point a ligh-

fully come to light.

I’m not sure why this is happening now, given that the job has been open for 18 months, but it’s no surprise to me that it’s coming before the November election. Even if Ed Mahaney loses the mayoral election — and, lordy lord, I 1000% hope he does — he will at least take some satisfaction that he blocked Sheehan from getting his job back.

I hope that the other three members of council — you know who you are — can bring about the proper conclusion to this sorry tale.

As for escaping a rip current, there is a new-ish theory out there. Traditionally, we’ve been taught to swim parallel to shore, rather than swimming against the current and exhausting ourselves. But recent research form oceanographers at the Naval Postgraduate School suggest that it’s safer to let yourself float out to sea a little more, and THEN swim parallel. The reason? To avoid feeder currents, the ugly step-sister of rip currents, which can suck you back in if you try to swim parallel immediately.

Considering the “swim parallel” technique has been considered beach gospel for 100 years, this new theory is a bit of a doozy.

Understandably, lifesaving officials in New Jersey — including Cape May — are wary of the advice. When you’re caught in a terrifying channel that’s sucking you into the great blue abyss, “just float a little” sounds like a hell of a gamble.

This is all a long-winded way of saying: rips are deadly — you’re nearly 200 times more likely to be killed by one than you are to be killed by a shark. (Reminder: Jaws on the beach tonight!) So it’s probably best to avoid being sucked in at all. When it comes to that, there are several points all experts CAN

If you do get caught, stay calm, never swim against the flow of water, and try signaling someone on shore who can call 9-11.

But most importantly, try not getting caught at all. In other words, identification is key. Rip currents can be especially calm sections of the ocean, or especially rough

patches that some guards refer to as “washing machines.” In either case, the water should be slightly discolored due to turbulence turning up sediment. The channels can be as narrow as 10 feet, or as wide as 100 feet. If you’re unsure, check with a lifeguard.

Me? I prefer hanging out on my beach chair with a good book.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

am not one for crazes. Excepting of course the time the hula-hoop mania swept the nation: on that occasion my snake hips and natural affinity for dance came together with dazzling effect.

Martini Beach was packed nightly to watch me gyrate on the bar, silver hoops swirling on every appendage.

Anyway, every craze since has passed me by with nary a twitch of interest. This latest, this Poke-Mango, is truly vile. There I was, minding my own business as usual (which is to say not minding my own business at all, as Young Albert and I took our morning stroll, greeting fine citizens, castigating errant Shoebies and dishing out rough justice whenever it was needed), when all of a sudden an overweight bearded youth in a tight tee stared at me, held up a mobile telephone at me and roared “bulbosaur!” Well, I assumed he was an escaped maniac and so karate chopped him on the side of his fat head. When, a minute later, he regained consciousness, he instantly demanded a “poked ball”! Well, I am not, as you know, easily shocked, but this fellow’s

impudence was just too much! I was about to thrash him when he quickly grabbed his fallen telephone and babbled that I should look. By what dark magic I cannot say, but I swear to you now that I was seeing the beach, and capering upon it, a curious primary-colored corpulent bug. I leapt to my feet, prepared to defend myself, but when I looked beyond the damnable phone, there was nothing to be seen! I was moments from summoning the Cape May militia, when the chap babbled that it was just a game, and that “all the kids” are playing it.

After I took the precaution of having his cursed phone smashed into pieces, and those pieces ground into dust, and that dust mixed with Holy Water, then the final paste dropped off the side of a boat a mile off The Point, I called some of the wretched D’Caturs junior, and demanded they tell me all about this Poking Man. I hung up on the first three giggling ninnies, but eventually found a great great grandson who at least possesses a shred of the famous D’Catur sense, and who assured me that this is not the work of the devil per se, but of a cunning oriental gaming company, and that sooner or later we will all be parading around with special eyeglasses that will deliver a surplus of unasked-for information into our very heads.

Now, I am not one for delivering unnecessary distractions to the general populace, least of all animated insects. But I think you will all agree that a slight tweak to the idea would deliver a hugely entertaining diversion in the shape of Wildwooder Go! I am thinking the slogan “gotta thrash em all!” Might be the very thing!

f you’re looking for a fun way to spend an evening in Cape May, try Paint and Piano at the Willow Creek Winery.

Paint nights are trendy, but even the Victorians painted on vacation. Creativity is a timeless stress reliever, after all, and adult coloring books can only do so much. Paint nights take it to the next level, offering adults the opportunity to spend a couple of hours painting a picture, confident that they can blame the wine if they don’t like their handiwork. Many people find that they get lost in the process and forget about their drinks. With simple instructions, and sometimes a pencil sketch to start you off, it’s easy to make something presentable.

When the painting turns out, as most do, patrons feel a surprising sense of accomplishment, along with the realization that they have forgotten their troubles for a little while.

The atmosphere is collegial and friendly, reminiscent of the days when the art teacher would wheel her cart into your elementary school classroom. Paint nights are a great

solo activity, with plenty of opportunity for conversation, but no requirement. It’s perfect if you’ve been alone with your thoughts too much. Ice breakers are built in to the process, so it would be a great first date. This is also a great group activity for a company team-building exercise, or for a family group with a large age range. See who follows the instructions to the letter, who is a blatant rebel, and who sneaks hidden jokes into the painting. Keep your own production, or trade off, and giggle when, on your next visit, you find your souvenir of summer hung in the laundry room, or inside the linen closet, or in some other worthy location.

ime to put up hummingbird feeders.

Late, you think? No, just in time to attract migrating, southbound hummingbirds that are common now.

Even if you have tried and failed to attract hummingbirds before, try again.

The only cost to you is a Humzinger feeder and a little sugar water. The magic formula is one cup of sugar for five cups of water. The trick is to boil the water before adding sugar. It kills bacteria, retarding the fermentation process, so you don’t need to change the water so often. Once a day is fine.

We make up a jug of hummingbird juice and keep it in the fridge. Cold temperatures also retards fermentation.

Do not add red dye — the red of the feeder is sufficient to catch a passing hummingbird’s eye. And there are lots passing. On my regular South Cape May Meadows walk we had eight zip by in less than two hours. So you might want to put up two or more feeders, widely spaced, since hummingbirds don’t share.

A friend in Arizona told me she had two

male blue-throated hummingbirds attending her feeders. If both were present they’d beat the snot out of each other.

Chances are you won’t attract a bluethroated — that would constitute a New Jersey record. You’ll have to contend yourself with a ruby-throated Hummingbird, though it’s just as magical.

You can leave your feeder up into November — wandering western hummingbirds arrive into December. In the absence of flowers they feed on insects they snap out of the

air, but your feeder will be a welcome sight.

Other bird species enjoy a drink of sugar water on a hot day, including orchard and Baltimore orioles which are also migrating now.

BUT unless you are willing to maintain your feeders properly — refreshing the water at least every other day and periodically cleaning your feeder with a solution of water and white wine vinegar — don’t bother. Why the Humzinger? Because it is inexpensive, easy to clean, and designed by a hummingbird specialist, Sheri Williamson of Southeast Arizona Bird Observatory, a place that sees a lot of hummingbirds of a dozen species.

The Theater Column

W

here there is blood, there is chemistry. Dracula, the new production from East Lynne Theater Company, features a cast with an exceptional rapport that by night comes alive on stage. The show is directed by Gayle Stahlhuth.

This adaptation of the original book was written in the 1920s by Hamilton Deane of London and Philadelphia native John L. Balderston. In this retelling, Count Dracula (played by Samuel Douglas Clark) uses the new convenience of air travel to make his way (at night, of course) from Transylvania to London. Turns out he wants to take advantage of the more dense population in a new neck of the woods (so to speak). He sets up residence to begin searching for a bride. We join the story as Dr Seward (Tommy Raniszewski) is worried about his daughter, Lucy (Rachel Holt). She has been suffering from anemia. Blood transfusions help briefly, but she becomes weak again.

Seward calls Abraham Van Helsing (James Rana). This legendary vampire hunter and archenemy of Dracula is all too familiar with

Lucy falls for Dracula in the East Lynne show Lucy’s symptoms. He has only one prescription: a stake through Dracula’s heart! Jonathan Harker (Matthew Lindsay Payne) is Lucy’s fiancée, who is rightfully distraught by all the developments and joins the hunt. Miss Wells is the maid (Tara Reuter) who also falls for Dracula’s charms. Butterworth (Robert LeMaire) is charged with keeping slippery madman Renfield (Evan Smilyk) locked up for his own good.

Superb acting is always great to watch, but when an ensemble comes together so tight as

these players it is a rare treat. The cast connections begin as Van Helsing and Dr Seward discover that the new and supposedly caring next-door neighbor is a blood-sucking vampire. Emotions are palatable and the characters compelling. For example, when we see Lucy swoon under Dracula’s spell, you can feel the energy between the two.

Clark’s Dracula is engaging — no, he’s mesmerizing! Holt’s Lucy effortlessly goes between innocent victim and alluring temptress. Rana’s sleuthing intensely plays off of Raniszewski’s fatherly concern. Smilyk is a local favorite since his work in ELTC’s Zorro! and Huckleberry Finn. He brings an eccentricity to the role of Renfield, his sinister laugh and desperate pleading wonderfully woven into the performance. All of this is portrayed on a set that is remarkably medieval. Kudos to Gayle Stahlhuth for design and Lee O’Connor, Kit Marlowe, and Corbin Cogswell.

Feeling a little uptight? Loosen your collar (if you dare) and enjoy a night with the legendary monster. The play runs until September 3.
