Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, get your Celtic on!

t’s easy to focus on the Scots when you talk about the Celtic people, especially if you’re a regular reader of Exit Zero, or you have an Outlander fan in your home. The Irish are also famous Celts, but there were Celtic societies all over Medieval Europe, tied to each other by culture, family groups, religion and language. With enclaves in Brittany, Cornwall, the Isle of Man, Wales and Italy, in addition to Scotland and Ireland, Celts spread across Europe. My Irish mother was surprised to find that the bagpiper she hired was a German whose home town has a strong piping tradition, and archaeologists recently found the burial site of a 2600-yearold Celtic princess near the Danube. This well-preserved, elaborate grave suggests that the Celts may have been more sophisticated and influential than waspreviously thought. Celts spread their influence to America as well, and not just in the naming of a basketball team. Celts are probably the creators of “America’s Stonehenge,” a 4000-year- old collection of altars and tunnels located on Mystery Hill in North Salem, New Hamp-

shire. Lowland Scots, Welsh and Irish soldiers fought alongside George Washington for American independence. American music has its roots in the folk music of Scottish and Irish immigrants — musicologists study isolated communities in the Appalachian mountains to track the history of tunes that have been passed through generations. Prominent Americans in every field share Celtic ancestry — Andrew Carnegie, Henry Ford and Diamond Jim Brady. Nellie Bly, Kate Chopin, and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Davey Crockett, Jim Bowie, and many of our presidents, including President Obama. Historic Cold Spring Village celebrates

the Celts in America with its 12th Annual Celtic Festival, scheduled for July 16 and 17. The live entertainment is included in the price of admission to this open-air living history museum — $12 for adults, $10 for children 3-12, and free for active duty military and their families with ID. There will be a beer tent, dancing, crafts and traditional music. Past years have included a pint-sized version of the Highland Games, where kids can participate in feats of strength. Historic Cold Spring Village offers a glimpse of life during the age of homespun, 1789-1840. You can see heritage crops, restored historic buildings, costumed interpreters, and a play area where children can try on costumes and play with period toys. The Welcome Center offers maps, embroidered samplers, and a picture perfect ship’s wheel. The Country Store offers whisk brooms, iron ware, pottery, and candy. Treat yourself to an ice cream, a lemonade, or a carriage ride in the shade. Check out hcsv.org for special offers on multiple historical sites in Cape May County.

Photographer Kathy Fallon’s gorgeous coffee table book is a love letter to the ocean and the beach. A Coastal Journey is filled with compelling, inspiring photography from Cape May, the Wildwoods and the Outer Banks.

So if you’re into T-shirts what you will find here are original, funky, retro designs on soft, high-quality shirts, with many celebrating West Cape May and Cape May life and traditions including the almost-legendary Lima Bean Festival. CHEEKS WAREHOUSE is located at 600 Park Boulevard. If you like Cheeks, Cape May, you will absolutely love the Warehouse store which is the place for all Flax past seasons on sale. The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I was dating a woman whom I liked very much but for a lot of reasons we decided to break it off. We’d been apart for about three months when I started dating another woman, whom I like a lot. She and I have been going out for a month, and things are going pretty well, but now my old girlfriend has reappeared. Do you think I could date them both until I sort it out? — Dazed and Confused Dear Dazed Yes, of course, as long as you are honest with them both and tell them that’s what you’re doing. Otherwise, you’ll be more than dazed and confused when one of them finds out you’re playing both ends against the middle. But you might want to think about that — it’s a very small town. Do you take them to the same

Wise answers to perplexing questions

restaurant or mix it up? Imagine watching the sunset at Harpoon Henry’s with one, when the other walks in. What happens when you are sitting around the fire pit at the Beach Shack holding hands under the stars with one, when the other appears with a gang of her not-soforgiving girlfriends? Lastly, these scenarios may be just the kind of excitement you like in your life, but don’t be surprised if neither of the other two women share your delight. Dear Answer Lady I play golf every week with a group of guys,

usually the same ones but every once in a while another guy fills in when one of the regulars can’t make it. The problem is he talks. Incessantly. About nothing. Well, he thinks he’s a jokester. One lame joke after another. We have to remind him to hit the ball, he’s so busy yakking. What can we do to shut him the hell up? I have to admit, also, that it bothers me more than the others, so we can’t cut him from the group. — Serenity Now Dear Serenity Ear plugs might be a good investment for you. Other than that, the Answer Lady suggests you go to your happy place when on the course. Try tuning him out but most assuredly, stop responding to him. Take some golf lessons from Zack, the golf pro at Cape May National, and when Gabby wants to know why you aren’t reacting or listening, tell him you are completely focused on your golf game. Bonus? You’ll be surprised that your game might just improve 10-fold by your new focus. And what better revenge than to clean his clock — golf score wise.

Bird Droppings

M

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

y Monday morning bird walks at South Cape May Meadows rarely fail to turn up exciting and inspiring discoveries. Take yesterday. One of our co-leaders announced that there were two sandpipers by the pond. Most sandpipers are still in the Arctic, breeding. Late June is a week early for southbound sandpipers. These would be adults. Unaccountably, the two birds proved to be pre-fledged chicks. Their precociousness wasn’t the issue, it was their presence. The only shorebirds breeding known to be breeding locally are Willet and Killdeer. The chicks were clearly not Killdeer and, while gangly looking, the Willet label didn’t fit either. It was the chick’s tail-bobbing action that led to the conclusion that the two juveniles were Spotted Sandpipers. They breed all across North America but are nowhere common and their presence as local breeders was hitherto unknown in Cape May. Spotted Sandpiper is a fairly common Cae May migrant and also one of the earliest migrants but their migration is conducted on

the wing. These chicks didn’t walk here. Supporting the conclusion that the birds were local was the discovery of a nearby adult which was very probably a male insofar as, in this species, males are the primary incubators of eggs. Polyandry is the Spotted Sandpiper’s primary mating system, with females mating with as many males as possible. It’s not surprising that the presence of an incubating male went unnoticed. Spotted Sandpiper’s “scrapes” are typically hidden and incubating birds do not call attention to themselves by

vocalizing. Most scrapes are near water. The young foraging at the pond’s edge was, therefore, classic. Despite a lifetime of birding, this was the first time I’d seen Spotted Sandpiper chicks. You never know what kind of hand Ma Nature is going to deal. Spotted Sandpiper chicks today. Tomorrow? I’ll have to get out of bed and find out. Southbound Shorebirds will be on beaches any day now. Soon, bobolinks will be overhead, filling the air with their windchime- like call notes. The southbound movement of Yellow Warblers will peak in late July, and another autumn will havecome to “the migration mainline.” Is this the year you join in the treasure hunt? Every Wednesday, I will be teaching a two-hour “break into birding” short course at Northwood Center in Cape May Point 701 East Lake Drive. Come see why 47,000,000 Americans have taken up bird watching. For information about morning bird wealks and classes contact Cape May Bird Observatory 609-884- 2736 or go to birdcape may.org.

The new play from East Lynne Theater Company is an intimate, personal journey through a remarkable collection of songs from the legendary composer. Just look at the audience—sweet gasps of familiarity, smiles on nodding heads, giggles, sighs, and voices happily singing along. Charles Gilbert, a composer with a long list of accomplishments, is music director. David-Michael Kenney is the creator and director. And the cast couldn’t be more engaging. Clare O’Malley, Maggie Johnson, Patrick Burr, and Aaron Bell embraced the emotion of the lyrics, the feeling behind the words, and… they embraced us, the audience. The songs were tailored for the personalities of these four as well as the simple, elegant fashion they wore. To call this a concert would be misleading. Each song is told as a tale with delight, love, and passion. The theatrical work of the cast

compares with any dramatic performance as they serenade the audience with remarkable storytelling through song. Can I tell you some of the songs? Well no. I can’t. I’d be helping you cheat. During the evening, you will enter a contest to name songs and their musicals or movies. I can tell you the first song was one of my personal favorites, “Getting to Know You.” If you don’t know that one, you need to get out more often—so see the show twice! The harmonies in that opening were masterful, the best I’ve

ever heard (and I get out very often!). Special thanks for remembering the often overlooked, now forgotten intros to songs. The first songs were individually performed, then the duets started. Chemistry between the performers was palatable. If these four aren’t the best of friends in real life, it would be disappointing. They made you feel as if they were inseparable. At times, this show became very personal for me. These songs are the soundtrack to me and my family’s lives. My father, now nearing 90, has played guitar for the past 60 years. He stills strums many of these songs in the evening—and sometimes with my daughter who loves the tunes. This music has not only entertained the whole world but my entire family. Rodgers’ Romance harkens back to the past, and it’s as new as the sunrise. Delightful. Personal. Timeless. Let this flawless cast and these wonderful songs suspend your life for a couple hours. Face it, you could use the break. The world will be there when you get back.

KYLO-REN a senior Lab mix with a lot of luster left in his life! His favorite thing to do at the shelter is to play fetch in the yard with his beloved tennis ball. Kylo-Ren is house broken and politely whines to let you know he has to go outside. If you are looking for an older companion with still a lot of youth left, Kylo-Ren would be perfect for you!

SPIKE is a loving five-year-old male. He is the favorite of all shelter staff and volunteers because he is extremely affectionate and calm. He loves to take leisurely walks with his friends at the shelter. The shelter offers him a blanket in his kennel at night because he looks sad when the day is over and everyone starts to leave. Adopt Today!

JASMINE is a senior Australian Cattle Dog who is a sweet and calm girl. She walks nicely on a leash and gets along with cats, dogs and children! For a family that wants a settled companion and someone who is affectionate, Jasmine is the perfect match. Adopt and give Jasmine a home to live out the rest of her years!

PIP was found in a trap left in the rain! She was rummaging through a person’s trash because little Pip was starving. She came into the shelter soaked to the bone squeaking away for some help. That’s how her name came to be “Pip” squeak. She is looking for a warm home with lots of food! Can you be the comfort she is looking for? Adopt today!

BESSIE is the picture perfect little lady. Although the shelter accomadations are adequate, Bessie would much prefer a nice quality home. If you are looking for a pretty cat like Bessie, look no further. Come by the shelter today and give this cutie the home of her dreams!

PETUNIA is a purebred, declawed, 4 year old Persian cat. She would do best as a single cat in a quiet household. The “Princess” of the house is what would suit her best! Stop in at the shelter and adopt this little fluffball today!
