Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

t’s a star-studded Ramblings this week. First of all, a pretty cool-sounding movie has been filmed in this area over the last three weeks. The movie is called Wetlands and tells the story of a former Philly cop who heads for the mythical town of Cape Atlantic in an attempt to reconnect with his daughter and ex-wife. In the process he apparently saves the town (which has been riven by crime) from despair and emerges as a hero. The movie stars Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, who appeared in Game of Thrones, and Jennifer Ehle, known for Zero Dark Thirty, The King’s Speech and Fifty Shades of Grey. Filming was mainly around North Wildwood, but there are some more local connections — I’ve heard that beers from Cape May Brewing Company will be featured, along with that cool old black Chevy that sits on Broadway, West Cape May and is owned by Jim Barnes (at least, I think it’s a Chevy — Jim never returned my message in time). I also heard Heather Graham was in the movie, but that doesn’t appear to be true, according to the Internet Movie Database. Anyway, the movie sounds

like just the kind of things I’ve been watching on Netflix recently. Can’t wait to see it. And now for some headline sports news involving local peeps. First of all, Matt Szczur, Lower Cape May Regional football and baseball living legend, has had a tough time since signing with the Chicago Cubs six years ago. Matt made his Major League debut with the Cubs in 2014 but has been in and out of the big leagues ever since. Well, on Sunday, he reminded the Cubs

that he still counts. Which isn’t an easy thing to do given that this might be the best Cubs team in 100 years. Matt hit a grand slam in the bottom of the eighth to break open what had been a 2-1 game with the Atlanta Braves. After the game, Matt was his usual modest, down-to-earth self, but his manager Joe Maddon was more effusive. “He’s kind of a manager’s, a coach’s dream player,” said Maddon. “He stays ready, he’s very versatile. There’s so many good things about him. The last step for him was for him to realize he belongs in the Major Leagues and he could do this. You could hear it conversationally. He talks differently. He’s more confident. Once you know it, you can do well here.” But, as a reminder of how fickle baseball can be, Matt injured his hamstring the next night while scoring for the Cubs during the fifth inning, and seemed to be heading for the sidelines for a couple weeks. Matt’s contract runs out after this season. Let’s hope he can do enough to earn a new one. There are an awful lot of divas and brats in the world of sport. Matt, though, belongs in a dif-

Page 14 ferent class. In 2010, while starring for Villanova’s football team as a receiver, he donated bone marrow stem cells to save the life of a 13-month-old girl suffering from leukemia. Switching sports, there’s speculation in the New York media that the next coach of the Knicks could be Wildwood lad Frank Vogel. Frank has been coaching the Indiana Pacers for six seasons and has had two first-place and three secondplace league finishes in that time. Frank’s father is Frank Sr (I call him Frankie Knuckles for no good reason), who runs Cape May Properties magazine and lives with his realtor wife Peggy in North Cape May. “I’ve heard the rumors but I’m not sure it’s going to happen,” says Frank Sr. “But it would be great if it did.” And now for news about local celebrity HotDog Tommy. Some of you may have heard that Tommy Snyder and wife Mary have retired from the business of serving high quality dogs from their Jackson Street hole-in-thewall. Tommy and Mary started in 2003, the same year as Exit Zero, and I quickly became addicted to their Potato Tornado. The bad news is that they are indeed done. The good news is that the name (and menu) will live on. The business has been taken over by Bruce and Deena Carlino. A few weeks ago I met Bruce and Deena in Fins (Deena’s brother Lenny Gagliardi is one of the owners of Fins) to chat about their plans. Look for more details in our May/June color issue, but I can assure you that all the old favorites will be there, along with some additions. Bruce won’t try to mimic the HotDog Tommy format (not everyone has the ability to tell so many bad jokes), but will focus on shortening the lines and making service more efficient. But don’t mistake him for a hot dog Nazi (no hot dogs for you!) — he seems like a nice, happy guy. Good luck to them both. And a happy retirement to Tommy and Mary – I’m sure we will see them around town.

The Activity Column

I

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, it’s time to treat your mother!

f you are very lucky, there was a time in your life when your mother could fix anything. She kissed your boo-boos, soothed your colic and scared away the boogeyman. It wasn’t always easy. Take a good long look in the mirror, or at those selfies on your phone, and face it. You were a bit of a pain in the neck, what with your midnight feedings and school projects that took over the dining room and illnesses that required laundry in the middle of the night. You required rides home at odd hours, with little warning, usually with a friend who needed to be dropped off in Albuquerque. You suffered through adolescence and she suffered with you, even as she developed surveillance skills worthy of the CIA. On top of that you probably wanted breakfast, lunch and dinner every day for 18 years or more, plus the occasional snack. We’re talking 20,000 meals. Take the woman — mother, stepmother, grandmother, aunt, or friend — out to brunch, for goodness sake. You know what your mother would like. Some want you to spend time with them

on Mother’s Day itself. If that’s your mom, make reservations at her favorite restaurant, or take her to jazz brunch at Carriage House Café. Reservations are recommended. For more information, call 609-884-5404. Congress Hall offers Mother’s Day Brunch in the Ballroom, with a chance of a train ride. Call 609-884-8422. The Washington Inn also has a Mother’s Day brunch, or you can be less formal with fried chicken at the Rusty Nail, fish and chips at Lucky Bones, seafood on the deck at the Lobster House, or a picnic on the beach.

If mom doesn’t mind celebrating early, consider the Mother’s Day Brunch and Fashion Show on Saturday, May 7 at Aleathea’s Restaurant at the Inn of Cape May, which includes a fashion show from Lace Silhouettes and The Cotton Company. Tickets are $30, available at capemaymac.org. Stroll over to SOMA NewArt Gallery to see exhibitions by three artists: Linette Childs, Karen Rose and Carol King Hood. Or take her to the Kentucky Derby Party from 4 to 10pm at Elaine’s, featuring live music, a hat contest, mint juleps and plenty of televisions to let you watch the Run for the Roses. Festive hats and colorful attire encouraged. Tickets are $20. Call 609-884-1199. Extend the celebration by taking your mother to You’re Invited, the 2016 Flower Show hosted by Garden Club of Cape May. Held on Friday afternoon, May 13 at Cape May Convention Hall, the show features floral masterpieces celebrating the happy occasions of life — weddings, reunions, anniversaries, birthday parties and more. Admission is free.

The Old Fogey

A

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

ir conditioning is the work of the devil. Not the most fiendish work of the devil, mind you: air conditioners come behind chimpanzees on tricycles, people who wear hats indoors, and Wildwood. But really, I rue the day that the Ice Wagon stopped rolling down our fair city’s streets at 4am every Monday. It was driven by Slava from Latvia, a stringy main covered head to toe in coarse black hair, who claimed to import the ice from Siberia. I am 90 per cent certain this was not true, but then I remember also casting doubt on his story that he sailed it down here in a ship made of concrete until one night as I completed my moonlight bath (a run, naked, under a full moon, to purge one of evil and certain toxins) at The Point, I stumbled upon a scene of chaos, with Slava standing atop a sinking stone vessel out of which thousands of tiny icebergs floated. I at first took his cursing to be in an obscure (to most of you people, anyways: I happen to speak 1234 languages, and understand another 300) Eastern European dialect, but I am pretty sure it was in a coarse Long Island accent. No matter: Slava

was a city treasure, delivering ice to every house and business through the hot summer days. He would also, for a small fee, use the wagons and waste ice to store and transport any “problems” we might have had that week, in the form of unwelcome visitors. One day, though, an air condonditioning salesman arrived in town, with a crude metal box from which a thin stream of tepid air issued. Slava listened politely then struck him on the head with an ice hammer he had been whittling while listening, and wordlesly slid the body off into his truck. But the seed had been sown, the damage done and the eternal

fascination of Cape May folks for things new and foolish indulged. Within a month, every house but one had a shiny air conditioning unit. Slava was despondent and we never DID solve the rash of gruesome murders that took place that summer, every one involving an air conditioning unit inserted into an unlikely orifice with some force. That one house? The D’Catur Mansion, of course. We took ice deliveries until Slava disappeared (reputedly consumed by a polar bear that had come in on a final, desperate budget-priced shipment of ice from Canada. And then, refusing to give in to Big Air, we built the remarkable series of servant-powered fans and ducts in the Mansion that ensure air circulates at close to the speed of sound, at which speed it remarkably is effectively Absolute Zero, and will flash-freeze any living thing that steps close to a vent (such as unannounced Mormon visitors, or clowns). Admittedly, it makes a simple walk across the Mansion a hazardous and lengthy enterprise, but I am a man of principle. I also get a thrill out of seeing visitors turned to ice.

Bird Droppings

S

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

uddenly we’re in the thick of it — another season of birding. Most of the regular breeding birds are back at South Cape May. The witchidy, witchidy, witchidy song of male common yellowthroats last Monday approached the level of a din. There are birds found here that do not occur in these western states. Among them indigo bunting, which are still making the dangerous crossing from the Yucatan. With luck, they’ll be here any day. Don’t despair if you have yet to don binoculars and get into some birdy habitat. The entire month of May is birdwatching prime time and the spectacle of red knot on Delaware Bay beaches constitutes one of the greatest natural spectacles on the planet, right up there with the wildebeest migration in East Africa, the monarch roosts of Mexico, and the gray whale migration off California. Don’t miss it. Remember what happened to the passenger pigeon. Now you see them, now you don’t. Great natural specta-

cles are not forever. They are a special prize for those who live in special times. Like now. Fact is, North America’s bird populations are healthier now than any time in the last 100 years. Don’t dawdle, though. Climate change is going to cause dramatic swings in bird populations. There are species whose populations are healthy now that will not see the next century. Some of these changes will be close to home. The Pine Barrens may well transition into a more southern pine forest composition, while coastal

wetlands will be hard pressed to maintain their high marsh/low marsh composition. So readers, my advice to you is: see North America’s birds while their populations and the season is at its peak. Yes, I mean NOW. Turn out for a Cape May Bird Observatory field trip. Led by local experts, they target the best the season has to offer. Young and old beginning birders are cordially invited. Loaner binoculars are available. You provide the enthusiasm, Cape May provides the birds. I look forward to raising glasses beside you as we savor a special gift of the season. The sight of a male indigo bunting or orchard oriole will blow you back to a brain stem, or your money back. But if your taste in birds leans towards birds with talons, be advised that bald eagles often put on a show for bird walk participants. Last Monday a young eagle engaged in one of those classic osprey pursuits during which the “fish hawk” was forced to drop his prey after a 10-minute contest. The eagle adroitly snatched the fish in mid-air.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I’ve been dating this man for two years. We are engaged to be married next year. We both have children from other marriages. We both own homes on the island, but he wants me to sell mine and give him the money to refurbish his, which he says will be our home. He says my reluctance makes him question the depth of my love for him. My house is my biggest asset and I would like my children to inherit it, but I don’t want to be disloyal. — Conflicted Dear Conflicted The Answer lady is always suspicious of people who pressure others to bend to their will, especially when money is involved. Ask him if he thinks your love for him should supersede your love for your children. Ask

Wise answers to perplexing questions

him why he doesn’t sell his house and put the money into refurbishing yours. Ask why you can’t sell both houses and buy one together. Ask why he is pressuring you to make a decision which will affect you the rest of your life. This is a red flag. You need to gather your girlfriends — a trip to Cape May Winery is in order to map out a strategy to extricate yourself from this hostage situation. Dear Answer Lady My mother-in-law is driving me nuts and is undermining my ability to discipline

my six-year-old daughter. I told her last week that under no circumstances was she to buy her a 3-Doodler pen because we already told her no. We’re talking $100. Guess what she does? Runs right out and has it ready for her when we go over for Sunday dinner. She never spends any time with her. Just in buying her things. She looks like the fairy godmother and we end up looking like ogres. Well, I do, because my husband, of course, sides with her. How do I win this battle? – One Upped One Upped Withhold sex. It’s the only leverage you have in these situations. Oh, you mean what to do about your daughter? Ahhh, quality mother-daughter time is in order. A grownup tea party at the Carriage House & Tearoom would be nice. First, treat yourself to a Downton Abbey-style hat at Kaleidoscope. Then, over tea sandwiches and desserts, have a chat about what you think is important in life, primarily the love for one another over material things. She won’t understand fully, but she will one day and love you all the more for it.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

I

have done a few mishmash features in my columns lately. Last week was Charlie Brown versus James Bond. A few months back it was Ant-Man versus Sherlock Holmes. But I’m serious when I say this is not a mishmash. There really is a movie about Elvis Presley and Richard Nixon called Elvis and Nixon. I couldn't make this up. There is a wildly famous picture with Presley and Nixon shaking hands. According to the National Archives, it is the most widely requested picture from their vault. That part is true. The question is: Under what circumstances did these two meet? The creators of this film have taken a few historical accounts, a dash of folklore and a healthy measure of liberties to create a storyline, plausible or not, about what went on in 1970 when that picture was taken. According to the writers, Elvis wanted to become a federal agent at large to go undercover and bust up the drug culture that he felt was killing the youth of the day. The premise is as compelling as it is

The unlikely encounter that sparked the new movie Elvis and Nixon perhaps frivolous, and its execution very tongue-in-cheek. Kevin Spacey is outstanding as Nixon. The two-time Oscar winner puts in one of his most unbelievable performances as the iconic president. Oscar-nominated Michael Shannon does not look like Elvis, and that's a little jarring at first, but his acting wins you over where

his resemblance falls short. The story unfolds slowly — admittedly sometimes too slowly — but it gets back in gear to finish strong. There are moments of great humor. Imagine Elvis demonstrating karate to the president. There are moments that are very moving. Elvis explains how he had a twin who died in childbirth (which is historic). I have a routine Saturday morning breakfast with a self-proclaimed Elvis historian — a guy named Orlando, whose biggest demonstration of authority on the subject was that he actually visited Graceland (not like millions of would-be experts don’t have that on their resumé). Startling however, is that without having seen the movie, he knew about the karate demonstration, the bear hug Elvis put on the president, and other elements of the story. So folklore exists, and this film incorporates all of them very nicely. So if you're up for an odd story that somehow works, have an inside look at a would-be encounter between two icons.

SKYE is a gorgeous blue pit mix. She is calm and eager to please. She walks well on the leash and enjoys playing in the yard. Skye is a student in the shelter’s training program where she is learning skills that will make her a great family pet. How could you resist this adorable face? Come meet Skye today. She’s waiting for you!

BARNEY is a young male blue and white pit mix who has the energy of a puppy and the manners of a gentleman. His happy face begs for a brisk walk, and he willingly sits and gives you his paw to shake when asked. He lived with another dog and would be happy in an active home with people willing to spend time with him. Don’t wait, Adopt!

SAMPSON and DELILAH are five year old beagles who came in together – hopefully their ending will be a “happily ever after” rather than their namesakes! These two mellow dogs walk well on leashes and are content to sniff in the yard and be with each other. Each will claim your lap for petting. Make room in your family and adopt!
