Ramblings From The Editor
W
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
e can probably agree that the word artisanal is over-used these days. Ever since the handmade revolution hit American several years ago, it’s really inspired people all over the country to go back to basics, making things by hand and attempting to cut out artificial, processed ingredients and everything that is generally evil about the industrialized world. And that’s a wonderful thing. But it goes too far when the word is used to describe something like artisanal, handcut French fries. Handcut is another overused word. I have to tell you — I’m not that impressed if you handcut your fries. I’ll be honest, this is a small town we live in. I wasn’t really expecting you to cut your fries in a huge industrial machine in the back of your restaurant. And I’m not that impressed by handpainted, artisanal furniture. Again, I kinda assumed that nice little set of drawers was painted using a human hand and a paintbrush. I watched a very funny video on Facebook recently. It was a parody of the artisanal
movement and featured a guy making toast... by hand. Just like his father did. And his father before him. It’s like the word organic... a word so overused that it’s completely lost its meaning. Turns out you really don’t have to be all that organic to be approved by the USDA when it comes to things like eggs and meats. But where am I going with all this? Just that I continue to be impressed by the, ahem, artisanal movement in Cape May.
We’ve got the guys at Cape May Brewing Company putting all sorts of good things into their beer, such as local honey (into my all-time favorite, the Honey Porter) and now Cape May Sea Salt, which is being used in the new Salty Lips (along with coriander — sounds amazing and a perfect match for the curries we serve here at Exit Zero Cookhouse). Cape May Sea Salt, by the way, is harvested by local superstar chef Lucas Manteca, who produces all sorts of artisanal goodies at his Red Store restaurant in Cape May Point. And another example of the artisanal movement in Cape May happened when I ate one of the best breakfast sandwiches (like, ever) at Beach Plum Farm last weekend. This is still under the radar so most of you won’t know this, but in the last couple weeks the Cape Resorts group has started serving breakfast and lunch at the farm, which is located on Stevens Street in West Cape May. There was already a gorgeous farm market in the Amish barn that was erected last year, and now there is a neat little kitchen, serving goodies like an egg and sausage (0r bacon)

Page 14 sandwich that is made entirely from farm produce — the eggs, the pork, the greens, the ginger, the lot). Amazing. The Beach Plum Farm Kitchen will be yet another reason to hang out in Cool Cape May — aren’t there already so many? Speaking of breakfasts, the good folks at Rio Station are exicted about launching a breakfast menu, featuring antibioticfree meats and freshly grown veggies. Had a few people ask what on earth was I thinking by posing for pictures with Mayor Ed Mahaney, aka my nemesis, in last week’s issue. Hey, come on now, it was a good cause. We were both at the opening of an exhibit based on Tommy’s Folly, a book telling the story of Congress Hall that I co-authored with Curtis Bashaw. The hotel is 200 years old this year! Go and see the exhibit, at the Emlen Physick Estate, on Washington Street. It’s pretty cool. And come see me and Curtis sign copies of the book at Congress Hall on Friday, May 27 between 5:30-7:30pm at the pool. There are lots of cool events happening this summer to celebrate the old hotel’s bicentennial. Watch this space in the next few weeks. Speaking of hotels and birthdays, the Montreal Beach Resort is 50. And we did a book on that, too! (Oy, it’s been a winter and a spring to remember.) That book, A Cape May Story, was written by my brilliant and beautiful wife, Diane Stopyra. A party was being held this Wednesday for the reopening of Harry’s at the Montreal. And a book signing party will be held at the Exit Zero Store in June. Watch this space for more details. This island is a great place to be, but boy has it been a tough place to get on and off lately. I can’t be the only one worried about how long this bridge work is going to take. And on Tuesday, a section of Broadway was closed, which meant we were kinda screwed at both ends. The opening of summer is two weeks ago — should we be worried?

P
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, getting your hands dirty
icture yourself on a sunny summer morning, sipping your coffee on the back porch, watching birds, butterflies and bumblebees dance around your flowerbed. If you want your milkweed to bring all the bugs to the yard, it’s time to get gardening. Pretty mornings are only one reason to exercise your green thumb. Gardening is a great workout — pulling weeds and planting seeds can burn about 300 calories an hour, and hauling bags of topsoil and rearranging rocks can build muscle in your legs and core. Planting helps to fight depression, because you are out in the sunshine and focusing on the future. And it’s fun. Playing in the mud has lost none of its charms since you were in kindergarten, and “accidentally” spraying your family with the hose on a warm day never gets old. Gardening can also support wildlife, by creating shelter and a food source. Residential gardens help to create corridors of habitat that link protected areas, helping animals to thrive. If you want your garden to be attractive
as well as beautiful, you’ve got to give the critters what they want. Do a little planning before you dig in. It’s not enough to plant a little milkweed. Butterflies do best when there is a mix of plants, so consider adding parsley, fennel, daisies, purple coneflower, or goldenrod. Add columbine and phlox to draw hummingbirds. Finches are said to like yellow flowers, and bees allegedly prefer purple and white, and they all like joe pye weed. Put in a few stepping stones and a bench to encourage human visitors to get closer. Talk to the
neighbors whose gardens you admire. They can offer advice about which plants grow best, and may even share some of their plants when they have to thin out their own plots. I love to see the descendants of my lamb’s ears around the neighborhood, and I owe my hosta borders to generous gardeners. Plant a mix of perennials and annuals. Native plants are most likely to attract wildlife, most likely to thrive in Cape May’s sandy, acidic soil, and least likely to require lots of work or lots of water. If you can’t go native, at least avoid invasive plants that spread too easily. Skimp on pesticides. Plant a mix of seeds and plants so you can start enjoying your work right away. Find plants at local nurseries, farm stands or Swain’s, or shop the Nature Center of Cape May’s wildlife friendly plant sale on May 21 and 22 from 10am to 4pm. For inspiration, visit the Flower Show hosted by the Garden Club of Cape May, Friday, May 13, from 12:30 to 7pm at Convention Hall. Or join Elaine’s Spring Fling on May 21, for garden tours, accessories, and eco-friendly ways to promote Green Cape May.

The Old Fogey
T
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
he good news is, there will only be one single mosquito in Cape May this summer. The bad news is, Rupert (for that is the mosquito’s name) is the size of a St Bernard dog, and rather ill-tempered. The other good news is that Rupert was safely contained in my basement laboratory (along with the Militarized Chimpanzees). The other bad news is that “was” is the past tense of “is”, and so really, it would be correct to assume, if you are the worrying type, that Rupert managed to escape, along with a trio of the aforementioned MiliApes (they were meant for the Marine Corp, but their attempts to shout the time-honored battle cry – “Ooh Rah” – got no further than “Ook” and that was just plain ridiculous, so they were returned to Cape May). The good news (this is a rollercoaster of emotions here, but stick with me, once you’ve made a quick check of the house to ensure all the doors and windows are shut. And locked. And barred) is that Rupert ate his three money co-conspirators: we found their totally drained skins lying on the lawn like so many
Halloween costumes (which indeed they will be, later this year). How did Rupert grow so large, I hear you ask? Well let me explain, ideally before you light flaming torches and come round to the Mansion in the form of an angry mob, like that time I accidentally reanimated the corpse of Captain Kidd and he insisted on arm wrestling everyone in Martini Beach. Naked. Well, this time all I intended to do was create a “super” mosquito that would eat other mosquitoes. I suppose somewhere along the line I should have noticed that the necessary attributes - great size and appettite - might
have been a hazard. It was only when lab technicians started to go missing, apparently leaving behind their clothes and skin, that suspicions were raised, and even then only a little (Young Albert would, on occasion, commit ritual murders for reasons known only to himself and presumably other murderous Yorkshire Terriers, and was always coming up with new atrocities). I will not go into the actual science, lest the foolish among you seek to try the same with kittens, or Wildwooders. Well, anyways, the good news is that even a super mosquito has a lifespan of two months, and Rupert is already six weeks old, so really, we’re looking at two weeks, tops. The bad news is that he needs (and so will) drink 84 pints of blood a day. So, really that’s only ten and a half of you. Or one stray Shoebie. Anyhoo, lest this lead to the culling of all kinds of vital Cape May citizens, I have drawn up a list of “volunteers” to be staked out on the Congress Hall lawn as sacrifice/entertainment for pre-season tourists at $10 a ticket (not for nothing is Cape May’s Latin motto “Stickittus Upyer Ersus” (we will triumph whether you like it or not).

Bird Droppings
S
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
o there I was, sitting in a car with David LaPuma, Cape May Bird Observatory Director, in the parking lot of Tinicum National Wildlife Refuge in Philadelphia and David is receiving bleats on his iPhone about a great spring fallout in Cape May. Now Tinicum is no shabby birding location, but it’s not Cape May. So what’s a fallout? It’s a deluge of migratory birds that are compelled by weather to concentrate in numbers and to inundate a land area until weather conditions that are auspicious for migration transpire. In spring, fallouts occur when northbound birds being ferried by warm southwest winds are overrun by rain. The birds respond by falling out on the penninsula. A water landing is not an option. Spring fallouts can be just as spectacular as autumn fallouts and more interesting insofar as many of the migrating tanagers and warblers will be in breeding plumage and males will be in full song. Fact is, the two most spectacular fallouts I’ve ever witnessed in Cape May were spring. I recall when waves of Baltimore and orchard
orioles were lifting off the fields at Higbee. In the parking lot, summer tanagers were feasting on the maggots crawling amid the piles of festering clam shells that awaited spreading. You should know that these spring migrants constitute the cream of the population, birds with the right stuff, that vaulted the Gulf of Mexico and then flew all the way to the East Coast. These were prime breeders, the best of the best. Losers ended up feeding fish and gulls in the Gulf. So having no way of knowing whether
last week’s fallout transpiring in Cape May was epic or average, all David LaPuma and I could do was don binoculars and see whether Tinicum was in the fallout zone, too. We ran into a local birder named Frank who gave us some tips, allowing that the woods were fairly “quiet.” Clearly we were in the wrong place that morning, but it cuts the other way, too. Spring warbler migration tends to pass west of Cape May because birds racing to get to their breeding territories in New England and Canada take the most direct route from the Gulf Coast. A side trip to Cape May can wait until fall when the kids are raised. Of course, in fall the kids come, too. With bird populations at their numeric peak, autumn fallouts in Cape May typically involve millions of birds. So David and I missed this one. The good news is there are still four weeks of spring migration ahead and after a brief summer, birds will be heading south. Chances are we’ll catch the next migratory fallout and bear witness to one of the natural world’s great spectacles.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I have a friend whom I have known for years and thought I knew well, but I went on his Facebook page last week and saw the most dreadful posts about the North Carolina LGBT bathroom laws. I don’t think I can be friends with him any more and I don’t know what to do about it. I never knew he had such hateful views. Do I confront him on Facebook and see if I can change his mind? — Different Point of View Dear DPOV The Answer Lady would ignore the post. When you see your friend, tell him directly that you disagree with him and the fact that he felt compelled to make his views public, but take warning that if you defriend him or wage war on Facebook it will no doubt get
Wise answers to perplexing questions
ugly. Why give him that forum? Instead, take a break from Facebook. In fact, it looks like you need an ice cream Sundae from Dellas Five n Dime to calm the nerves. Dear Answer Lady I have been trying to break it off with my brother’s college roommate whom I’ve been seeing off and on for two years, but there is something about him that keeps me coming back. Although I’ve not dated anyone else, I know he goes out with other women because I see the pictures of them on my
brother’s Facebook page. It bothers me, but we have never made a real commitment to one another. I would like there to be, but I’m afraid if I pressure him, he’ll be the one to break it off. What should I do, Answer Lady? I can’t talk to my girlfriends about him because they all hate him, but I think I love him. — On the Outside Looking In Dear Outside; The Answer Lady is wondering what you think you’re on the outside of? And what would you or he be breaking off? Relationship? It sounds as though you don’t have a friendship — just the occasional hot liaison, which is fine, if you can accept that. You, however, sound as though you are looking for Mr Right in all the wrong places. You really have to raise the bar for yourself. Consider a time out from this guy. Pay a visit to Caroline’s Boutique. Buy a stylish frock and gather up your very wise girlfriends for a night out. While you’re out, start thinking about what makes a happy relationship versus what makes for a miserable one. Apply those to your own life and see what you come up with.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
R
ecently, I saw Richard III live on stage. Yes, Shakespeare’s Richard III. Stay with me, I’m taking this somewhere. The performance was excellent mainly because it involved the audience. That’s the best way to see Shakespeare — when the audience has fun with gets rowdy. And this is the best way to see Captain America: Civil War. Didn’t I say I was not going to see this movie? There are too many superheroes to keep track of, I said. Superhero movies are not the same as they used to be, I said. What can I say? The movie is getting great reviews even before its official release, and I had to check it out. Okay, I admit that I’m still a sucker for a good superhero movie. Much like watching Shakespeare with a live and lively audience, this movie was a blast to watch with a crowd that, all dressed up like heros, was clearly into it. Of course the special effects were dazzling. There are a lot of superheroes, but it works here because they are not thrown in gratu-
Super fun: Captain America: Civil War itously. The storyline was well thought out, wonderfully executed, and did not degrade to shoot’m up. The best part was seeing this movie in a theater with a bunch of fans. They cheered, they cooed when characters kissed. They could not contain excitement when a surprise was introduce (and there were lots of surprises). Of course, I was caught up in all that. Okay no spoiler here, you can see in the trailers that Spider-Man (played by
relative newcomer Tom Holland) is part of this fight. Spidey is supposed to be a cocky hero yet awkward teen. That whole subplot played out beautifully. But let’s get to the main story, which is not new (we saw it in last year’s Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation). Our heroes get the bad guys but they unfortunately kill innocent people all along the way. The UN want to stop this with an accord, but the heroes disagree. They start choosing sides and fighting. Bam! If you don’t know all the players, writers catch you up quickly. Some readers remember when film serials where all the rage decades ago. You would wait a few weeks for the next installment would come out. You knew the characters, and you knew cheered for your favorites. It is no different here. Except the films are a few years apart and cost many millions of dollars (Captain America: Civil War cost quarter of billion to make). But if you’re looking for a great time with a fun crowd, a ticket to the theater for this one is a worthwhile investment.

TINSEL is a sprightly 1 1/2 year old female Catahoula leopard mix who came in as a stray. Her large ears eagerly listen for commands and she already knows sit, paw and down. Tinsel’s favorite activity is chasing rope toys in the yard which keeps her busy for extended periods of time. Don’t let this cutie wait any longer. Adopt today!
SHOTTA is a happy 3 year old male. He loves to run in the yard and play fetch. He has learned to sit and wait for the next toy to be thrown and also loves to jump in the baby pool to cool off and relax. He would love to find a best friend to swim and take long walks on the beach with. Shotta would be best with an active family. Meet him today!
SAMPSON and DELILAH are five year old beagles who came in together – hopefully their ending will be a “happily ever after” rather than their namesakes! These two mellow dogs walk well on leashes and are content to sniff in the yard and be with each other. Each will claim your lap for petting. Make room in your family and adopt!

MIKA has been waiting patiently here at the shelter for someone to take her to her forever home. She is a very outgoing and affectionate little lady! Mika is 10 years old, but you probably wouldn’t know it by how much energy and love she has to share. If you could spare the love for a wonderful, loving lady, give her a chance!
JACOB AND RANGER came into the shelter together after a tough life living outside. Both with black and white “tuxedo” coats, these cats are like two peas in a pod! They deserve a home to see what the glamorous indoor life is like. Since all they’ve known is eachother, A double adoption would be ideal. Come in and meet your new best friends today!

FAT CAT has spent the past year living in the bushes. He learned to get food from a nice family, but was unable to defend himself against other strays stealing his food because he was declawed. Needless to say, he was terrified upon his arrival at the shelter and has been struggling to adjust. He would be best in a quiet home. Give him a chance!
