Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

have something to tell Tommy Raniszewski — you’re probably getting the wrong idea about me. First of all, an introduction... Tommy is a man about town, pretty well known in these parts. He works for Bath Time on the mall, often acts for East Lynne Theater Company and writes regular articles for Cape May magazine. In other words, one of that breed of Cape May people who do lots of different things. This place attracts people like that, though it is, of course, also a byproduct of living in a seasonal town — people with one single full-time, yearround job are in the minority. Anyway, I’ve been seeing Tommy a fair bit recently. Three days a week at North Beach Gym, and then again on Saturday morning, while I was rolling down the mall on an earlymorning run. And it struck me... Tommy must be thinking I’m a bit of a health nut. Every time he sees me, I’m working out. And then it struck me that he must ALSO be wondering why I still have a gut hanging over my shorts. In case you ARE wondering, Tommy, the truth is I just

started working out three weeks ago. It’s the first time I’ve made regular trips to the gym since 2007, when me, Victor Grasso and Mike DeMusz trained with North Beach’s Mark Chamberlain, cranking out the P90X regimen — the so-called Sparta Workout. Hey, 250 pushups don’t come easy. That was the closest I’ve been to buff my whole life, and that was despite the fact that in those days I was hitting the town seven nights a week in the summer. (Ah, those sad,

indulgent days of singledom.) My motivation this time around was sparked by the fact that not one single shirt or one pair of pants in my closet fit me comfortably. I made a pact with myself some time ago that I would never buy 38-inch pants, at least while I still had my wits about me. So, it was either giving up alcohol completely (not likely), bread (maybe), or hitting the gym, something I have always regarded as being as much fun as putting my head up a skunk’s butt. End result — myself and my athletically inclined wife signed up for training sessions with the aforementioned Mark Chamberlain. And that’s one of the best decisions I’ve made in quite some time. I get my ass kicked three mornings a week, but it really makes my egg/ avocado/cheese breakfast treat so much tastier (I’m still holding the bread). And although the shirts are still a little tight, I’m thinking it must be because of all the extra muscle I’m packing on the chest and shoulders, right? On this island in the summer, it’s hard to throw a bocce ball (look at me with my gym

Page 14 references) without hitting a person exercising. We’ve got runners, we’ve got surfers, we’ve got local interior designer Viviane Rowan of White roller blading down the promenade with her blonde ponytail blowing in the sea breeze (she’s such an Eighties girl that one). And athletes of the island have a reason to be jazzed this weekend — Sunday’s Escape the Cape Triathlon. Even if you’re not participating, it’s a spectacle worth seeing. I’m in awe of anyone who can leap off a ferry, swim, bike and run. Yes, David Craig, I’m in awe of you, though you really should learn how to operate a cellphone. Staying on the subject of athletics (and people I’m in awe of), my wife Diane Stopyra just launched a new business called RunCape. She and Kashi Davis are operating running tours that weave in local history and nature — Kashi is a biologist with the state, and Diane has written a bunch of books on this area and knows her stuff. I went on the run Saturday and very much recommend it. There are loads of stops, which is perfect for an out-of-shape gutbuster like myself. This weekend, the runs start at 7:30am on Saturday and Sunday — visit runcape.net to book. Hope to see you there! I’m also in awe of the great Victor Grasso, who hosted an art show opening at SOMA NewArt Gallery Saturday that brought some hot talent to this little town by the sea. If you’re not familiar, Victor is already an artistic legend in these parts. He’s been having solo shows at SOMA for 10 years and will be again this August. But right now he’s curating a show that features the work of more than a dozen artists from across the country as well as regionally. Do yourself a favor and go see it — SOMA is at Carpenter’s Square Mall on Perry Street. Until next week, keep on running... or start.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

am not one for zoos. Back in the bad old days I was very much the one for zoos. Of course, that was because every time a zoo opened, Ernie Hemingway and myself would give it our full and official approval, retire to The Brown Room to toast its success with a bottle of Laphroaig and then a few dizzy hours later would pay the new zoo a midnight visit and by morning the D’Catur Trophy Room would be richer by a few score heads and the zoo would be shuttered. Now, before you start, I have totally renounced my previous ways, and made amends as best I could: I even managed, by a cunning mix of state-of-the-art animatronic engineering and the lost papers of Doctor Frankenstein, manage to return a few dozen animals to their rightful owners (well, I say “rightful” when in fact those zoo fellas were little more than thieves themselves: but no more right now: we will come to my passion for animal rights in a moment). In many cases, I admit, that led to people running shrieking from the enclosures, pursued by clanking hissing surgically modified apex

predators. But really, I have since then devote my life (well, at least 10 minutes every Sunday evening after Game of Thrones) to eradicating the trade in wild animals (living and dead). To that end, I have banned the world famous Billy Chipperfeld’s Lion Extravaganza from Cape May: those of you who are, like me, ancient, will recall their annual spectacle, whereby 100 lions were released in Wildwood while we followed in motorized and high-sized charabancs (only one lion was actually killed over the years, and that from over-eating, but still, the culture shock for those poor ignorant

beasts was awful. Also, the lions got upset). And I will not, as you know, have apes of any stripe in the city boundaries (except for Capuchin Monkeys: they are nature’s butlers and other than a tendency to make the tea with a little too much milk, have never harmed a human being), as it is my heartfelt belief that apes have never forgiven us for taking the top evolutionary spot, and are plotting revolution: it is a little known fact that Pierre Boulle, a Frenchie, wrote his Planet of the Apes after drinking with me in the Admiral hotel bar one evening. Of course, in the original version I dictated to him, the closing scene was me riding around a headland to see the Concrete Ship, and falling to my knees in the sand screaming: “Damn you all to Philly!” That does not, I admit, leave much, but take heart: our scheme to have a Shoebie Zoo is more advanced that we have admitted. As it happens, right now, half of our visitors are actually slickers from NYC, here to thrill at the sight of thousands of unwary tourists in their natural habitat. In fact, that means you, dear visitor. And don’t be thinking you can leave.

The Activity Column

E

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, staying active

xercise is so good for us, it’s a wonder we don’t enjoy it. Exercise improves your mood, keeps your heart strong, controls your weight, and lowers your risk of cancer, and somehow we treat it as an annoying chore. It wasn’t always this way. As kids, we chased each other just for the heck of it, and bounced around the block on pogo sticks. We played hopscotch and hula hooped, and had to be told to sit still. Now, not so much. Sure, there are some among us who take pleasure in exercise, but many of us are counting the minutes, or the reps, just to get through it. There are lots of tips about distracting ourselves while we run, or walk, or lift. Some focused folks can pray or conduct business on the phone as they work out. Others listen to music or audio books. (Just don’t broadcast your blue material. Keep it G Rated, or keep it quiet.) You can combine exercise with birdwatching, and stroll the walkways of the Meadows with your binoculars at the ready. Climb the lighthouse a time or two. Meet a friend for a jog instead of lunch. Try some-

thing new and challenging, so you focus on how to do it and forget that you’re exercising. Unleash your inner child and pretend something is at stake, as if zombies coming out of the fog will catch you if you don’t get to the corner by the count of ten. Run a race just to see who you’ll beat. On June 18 at 9am, join the Annual Cape May Point 5 Mile Run, and support the Cape May Point Volunteer Fire Company. There is also a two mile fun run, which begins at 8:30. The “flat, fast, and well-marked course“ begins at

the Fire House on Yale Avenue in Cape May Point. Registration is $20 in advance — you can register at the fire house on Friday night from 6:30 to 8:30 — and $25 on the day of the race. See www.cmp5m.org for registration or more information. Be a little silly. Sign up for the Krazy Color 5k on June 19, at the Beachcomber Camping Resort, 462 Seashore Road. Support Cape Regional Medical Center and Wildwood Catholic High School and see how colorful you can get. All runners get great goodies, including a T-shirt and color packets before being blasted with color along the way. Registration is $30, $15 for kids 4-15. Check-in at 8am. The race begins 9:30am. Or, try the new distraction in town. RunCape — History and Nature for the Sole offers guided running tours so you can think about Cape May’s landmarks instead of your aching legs as you run. Call (609) 425-6507 for information. Next week: Go glam!

Photographer Kathy Fallon’s gorgeous coffee table book is a love letter to the ocean and the beach. A Coastal Journey is filled with compelling, inspiring photography from Cape May, the Wildwoods and the Outer Banks.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My grandson and his fiancé are planning their wedding and are going to ask for cash instead of gifts. I think this is SO lacking in good taste. I turn red just writing to you, out of shame. My words have fallen on deaf ears. On the invitation, they plan to write something one would see at the end of an obituary — in lieu of gifts contributions can be sent to… What can I do to stop this? – Seeing Red Dear Red It does seem a bit déclassé, but we are living in a different time. They perhaps already have all the crystal, china and toasters they need to start a life together. For people like the Answer Lady, who don’t like being ordered about, gifts will still be the order of the day. Furthermore, putting the cash call on an

Wise answers to perplexing questions

invitation is indeed the height of bad taste. Suggest that they instead establish a honeyfund and announce it on their website and/or Facebook page. This can be very appealing. The happy couple will establish a wish list for which guests can make specific contributions — new home, new living room set etc. No need to worry about the guests not seeing it, since word of mouth will spread pretty quickly. This should solve the problem and make you look like the hippest grandparent around. Be sure to make the suggestion over

champagne cocktails at Fins. Ideas always go down better with alcohol. Dear Answer Lady This will seem most indelicate, but my boyfriend and I have had an ongoing argument regarding flatulence. It is perfectly manly apparently for him to blast away, but if I have a small problem which, believe me, I try to conceal to the point of stomach cramps sometimes, he accuses me of being unfeminine. “Girls don’t fart,” he maintains. I want you to assure him that, girls, do indeed, have gastric issues like everyone else, especially if they are vegetarians girls. — Gassed Up Dear Gas Flatulence is not confined to a sex, but the male of the species embrace it with a vigor that is unparalleled. Withholding is unhealthy. The Answer Lady suggests both of you try to avoid those foods which cause the problem. She also suggests you laugh and relax. Pop into Just For Laughs and buy a copy of each of the following: Farts in Wild, A Spotters Guide to Farts and Farts Around the World.

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

ard to believe but spring has passed us by. Summer birds will be Ma Natures treat to us until August, when autumn migration is in full swing. However this does not mean that local birders are to be treated only to the same static breeding birds day after day. Fact is birds are migrating every day of the year. The odd seabird or raptor could turn up any time and even many breeding birds continue to trickle in through the summer months. Take house wrens — second-year birds arrive well after breeding adults reach here in April. Finding open territories, these younger birds may establish territories. Or finding all the good spots already taken by established breeders, these younger birds may work the edges of territories hoping for the opportunity to spread their genes on the sly or just sit out the season and wait for next year. Fact is a fair amount of repairing is going on throughout the breeding season. Many late arrivals get lucky after the first brood is raised and Ma Wren plans for her second effort. Plans may include a new mate, perhaps a younger man

Yes, wrens have a dynamic and fickle mating strategy, but it works for them. Also, as summer progresses, many newly fledged birds of the year, disperse — bobolinks, assorted swallows and other species wander into Cape May. Weather and wind direction plays a big role in these Summer peregrinations. Drought in the South prompts southern water birds like wood stork and white ibis to head off in search of wetter pastures. It would not be unprecedented for some local birder to

stumble upon a wood stork wading around in the South Cape May Meadows, come July. And of course, all summer long, a host of South Atlantic seabirds will be heading north just offshore. Strong easterly winds could direct sooty shearwaters and Wilson’s stormpetrels into Delaware Bay. Any well-formed hurricane passing west of our region is sure to ferry a bounty of southern bird species into Cape May. Keep your insurance up and your binoculars handy. Finally, by early July the first regular southbound migrants begin arriving. Multiple shorebird species typically use Cape Mays tidal reaches in July, to rest and feed. Come August the first southbound songbirds join in the exodus. Yellow warblers and bobolinks are among the early ranks. Get out there on a CMBO field trip and see what unexpected booty has been deposited by the shifting winds of summer. Summer birding blahs? Not in Cape May, where possibility is your constant companion.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

T

his column is mostly about guy flicks. Most of the guest columnists help me cover the gal flicks. Notice how I avoided the obvious and more melodious phrase for films that appeal to women (chick flicks). I’m trying to be more sensitive and less brutish here! Look at my two picks last week: The Nice Guys and Keanu, a Key and Peele film. Crazy guy flicks, I know. So it’s time to show that this column can be “pinky-out, tea sipping, mind your posture” cultured! What better way to do that than with a jolly good Jane Austen film? And I’m not talking about the movie Pride and Prejudice and Zombies released earlier this year. My understanding is that the film failed to appeal to Austen and zombie fans alike. Love & Friendship is the latest film based on the work of Jane Austen. For yet another try, I will attend a Jane Austen film. What’s that you say? “Pardon me, your erudite is showing.” Indeed. This is my usual experience watching an Austen movie: by the third “m’lady,” I’m drowsy; by the fifth “m’lord,” I’m nearly sound

Love & Friendship might make an Austen fan of you asleep. Sometimes these movies can be long, which has always been my excuse. Then I did some research. Some were long, but primarily they are about two hours — standard length really. Oh, there’s no excuse, perhaps I am simply unrefined. However, Love & Friendship showed promise. What made it different? First, it’s getting great reviews. Second, run time: 1h, 32min! Third… well there isn’t a third. Let’s

just go with the two. Kate Beckinsale proves she can rise above her recurring lead role in the Underworld film series that garners high box office sales but way low scores from critics. Beckinsale is superb as Lady Susan, a widow determined to secure a husband for herself and her daughter. The film is excellent. I only very lightly snoozed a couple times, but that was my own fault! I had dinner way too big before going into the theater. There were moments where I joined the audience to laugh out loud! All of the characters were well explained and portrayed brilliantly. For you Austen-phobes, Love & Friendship may be the adaptation that turns the tide for you. A quick review of X-Men: Apocalypse. What can I say about superhero flicks that I haven’t already said? This one has it all: too many heroes, too many subplots, too much to follow. The special effects are dazzling, the dialogue cliché, and the characters one dimensional. But I did say the effects were dazzling. Worth the price of admission? Maybe. But this film is blockbuster mediocre.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

SPIKE is a loving five-year-old male. He is the favorite of all shelter staff and volunteers because he is extremely affectionate and calm. He loves to take leisurely walks with his friends at the shelter. The shelter offers him a blanket in his kennel at night because he looks sad when the day is over and everyone starts to leave. Adopt Today!

ANGEL is a two-year-old tan and white female terrier-lab mix who is a happy and affectionate young girl. She loves to play ball and returns it with a happy grin and a patient “sit” until you throw it again. Angel’s favorite thing is to lean in for petting and sit on your lap. She lived with another dog and loves human companionship. Meet her today!

SAMPSON AND DELILAH are five-yearold beagles who came together. Hopefully their ending will be “happily ever after” rather than their namesakes! These two mellow dogs walk well on leashes and are content to sniff in the yard and be with eachother. Each will claim your lap for petting. Make room in your family and adopt!

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

BESSIE is the picture perfect little lady. Although the shelter accomadations are adequate, Bessie would much prefer a nice quality home. If you are looking for a pretty cat like Bessie, look no further. Come by the shelter today and give this cutie the home of her dreams!

FAT CAT has spent the past year living in the bushes. He learned to get food from a nice family, but was unable to defend himself against other strays stealing his food because he was declawed. Needless to say, he was terrified upon arrival at the shelter and has been struggling to adjust. He would be best in a quiet home. Give him a chance!

BOBBIE is a rough tumble barn buddy. She will take care of any mice or rodents you may want gone. Bobbie also loves riding in cars. She loves cars so much that she had her kittens in a car. If you want an outside female cat, Bobbie would be perfect for you. Come by the shelter and meet this cute little lady today!

EILEEN PARRISH has been living and working locally as a Realtor since 2010. Having raised her four children she had a dream, similar to many of our buyers... she wanted to live at our beautiful shore. She has a genuine love of the sea, homes filled with character and all things Victorian — so what better place for her to set up shop? As a child after spending her summers here… she never wanted to leave. Another interest she enjoys is decorating, so please inquire about the complimentary Home Staging services she offers to all her sellers. Previously, Eileen lived in Las Vegas for 13 years and sold insurance and investments products. Contact her at EileenParrish@coastlinerealty.com; at the office, (609) 884-5005 x106; or cell, (609) 972-0549.
