The Old Fogey

T

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

ennis is not my thing. It USED to be my thing, back in the day, but once you’ve played a full tournament using live grenades for balls, anything less invigorating is unbearably dull. I should point out that it was a post-war trend, and the best players were, like me, bored vererans. Obviously, the game carried with it a rather high attrition rate for players, and after the final we realized that the winner (me) was not only the BEST player, but the ONLY player not scattered over a wide area. The thought came to mind when watching Wimbledon fall to a graceless Scotchman. You know my thoughts on Scotchmen: they should be seen and not heard, and then ideally not seen either. But we are stuck with them, unless that tiny nation frees itself from the unwholesome grip of that corpulent hoor, Mother England. Should THAT happen, I believe there is an international plan waiting to spring into action that will repatriate every one of them, sending them home to “build a new nation”/ “cease to bother everyone else”. We DO need a refined sport here in

Cape May, I admit: mini golf (and indeed maxi golf) are pastimes for maroons, and encourage some dreadful sartorial choices. And tennis is all very well, but unless those Williams gals are playing, just not enough for the adrenalin-addicted aesthete. We did have a world-class elephant polo team at one point, and other than the truly monstrous poops that tended to crop up (or rather plop down) around town, it was quite a delight. It was just a shame that (as with most any revolutionary idea we have here) it was rather overdone, and came to a tragic end. In

this case, a midnight match inside the grand ballroom of The Admiral Hotel, which was a spectacle like no other, with the thunder of pachyderms, the yells of the mahoots and the mildly aroused shrieks of spectators. If only that damned monkey had not tumbled from a balcony and landed right atween the eyes of Maharajah, the fearsome old bull elephant (there are a great many unanswered questions on the subject of a monkey in the hotel, not least as to how it learned to drive an elephant, and where it thought it was headed. Also, why it had on a tuxedo and spats. Sadly, none can be answered here, this evening) and sent him careering through the building, knocking aside support pillars as if they were merely wooden columns coated in plaster and painted with scenes of cavorting nymphs and satyrs (don’t start me on the subject of the ceiling art in the bedrooms: I was never totally supportive of having that Caravaggio come over and paint them). Well, when the dust and poop had settled, there was no more elephant polo team and no more Admiral.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My wife and I are invited to dinner party at the house of a couple we met on the beach, but they are both recovering alcoholics. What do we bring as a hostess gift? We always bring wine, usually in a nice reusable gift bag but that would be inappropriate. On the other hand, there will be others attending the dinner party who drink. We don’t want to be the ones responsible for breaking their recovery. And do you think it would okay to have a couple of cocktails before we arrive? – Puzzled Dear Puzzled You seem to be spending way too much time thinking about this. Flowers are the perfect choice for such occasions, whether the host couple is in recovery or not. Try Kate’s Flowers or Cape Winds Florist. Make sure you

Wise answers to perplexing questions

get the arrangement in a vase so you are not burdening the host and hostess with finding an appropriate receptacle for them. Flowers will leave a more lasting impression than wine will anyway. Dear Answer Lady We have two invitations to two pool parties on the same night. What do we do? The one party is at the home of some influential business people my husband would like to meet and feels that not going would be perceived as a slight which could come back to haunt him

later. The other is at the home of some close friends whom we haven’t seen in a while, since they live in Florida in the winter months. They would be equally offended if they were to hear that we passed their soiree over in favor of another’s. — Betwixt and Between Dear Betwixt There are a number of options available to you. You could stay home and fret and not go anywhere. You could divide your time between the two, explaining the dilemma to the business soiree hosts. The fact that you are so much in demand socially might even elevate your cache. The Answer Lady also imagines that a briefer stay at the networking party would most likely be a smoother sail than the prospect of snubbing your dear friends. However, there is also the chance that you will find the networking so profitable that you will not be inclined to leave. So consider this: Go to the business party. Explain the situation to the friends and offer to take them to Harry’s for cocktails and dinner with a view as a mea culpa. If they are really good friends, they should understand.

Bird Droppings

O

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

ur Monday morning walk in South Cape May Meadows fell on July 4. And fittingly, it was a red, white and blue day. Our group, which included first-time birders, were wowed by red-winged blackbirds unfurling their namesake shoulder patches, snowy and great egrets, plus 10 great blue herons — an unexpected treat since they don’t breed locally and migration doesn’t begin until October. Green herons and indigo bunting rounded out the color chart — 51 bird species in all, which isn’t bad for midsummer. There were also three least sandpiper and greater and lesser yellowlegs, our first southbound migrants. Why migrate so early? Because shorebird young are precocious. If adults remain on Arctic breeding grounds they’ll compete with their young for food. By leaving ahead of their young they also reduce competition for food during migration. It’s a very workable strategy. As July progresses we’ll be seeing many more shorebird species. Every day afield offers opportunities to learn. Right now waterfowl are molt-

ing. Drake mallards lose their characteristic green heads and for a few weeks resemble the more cryptic female. I’ve known many experienced birders who shudder at the thought of identifying molting diving ducks. The list of diving ducks summering in Cape May is very. A few non-breeding scoter have been seen off and on and we did have a female hooded merganser fly over the parking lot, but mallards and gadwall are usually the only ducks to challenge us until August, when American wigeon and northern pintail arrive, decked

out in fresh, bright plumage — no identification challenge, maybe, but a feast for the eyes. By August, fall migration will be in full swing. Songbird migrants, shorebirds, herons and egrets will all be heading south. Hummingbirds will be zipping over at one-minute intervals. If you have ever given thought to taking up birdwatching there is no better place or time — 7:30am, Monday, Nature Conservancy parking lot on Sunset Boulevard. Part of birding’s appeal is the element of surprise. Let our stellar cast of leaders take the guesswork out of your identification challenge, molting ducks or no. What colors will be featured next week? Smart money says shorebird brown. If you really want to jump start your birding, I will be offering a two-hour Break Into Birding course at the Northwood Center, 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point 2:004:00pm every Wednesday. Classes are small, so you are advised to call to reserve a space 609-884-2736. Young birders are most cordially invited.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

T

hink of it as It’s A Beautiful Mind without the mind bending. The 2001 film starring Russell Crowe told the story of John Nash, an exceptional mathematician who suffered from delusions and paranoia. In the new film The Man Who Knew Infinity, East Indian mathematician Srinivasa Ramanujan (played by Dev Patel) is as asocial as Nash and equally as brilliant. Ramanujan struggles to convince anyone that his formulas (though lacking proofs) reveal profound truths of logic. Eventually, he is given the opportunity to travel to Trinity College in England to work with Professor G.H. Hardy (played by Jeremy Irons). There the young student is subjected to learning the basics of mathematics and the reality of needing to defend his formulas with proofs. And let us not forget the love story. Ramanujan’s wife was barely getting to know her young husband before he shipped off to England. While at the college, he awaits her letters but receives none. She has only his own mother to blame, as she intercepts the

Jeremy Irons and Dev Patel excel together letters and does not send them. Yes, she is one of those mother-in-law types! Irons is as compelling in this role as he is in any other. The atheist professor, he was come to grips with his own hostility toward an established order to find it in the formulas he teaches. The story takes place at the beginning of World War I. The college is converted to a mobile surgical unit. The diseases that come into the camp with wounded soldiers take their toll on Ramanujan.

Patel is a favorite of mine. He is the young man who delivers a line I have adopted as a lifelong line in my personal life. In the 2011 film, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Patel plays Sonny, the owner of the hotel which was slightly more run down than the brochures originally made it appear. When questioned about the state of the hotel, he says to a guest, “Everything will be all right in the end... if it’s not all right then it’s not yet the end.” Oh, and Patel was also the lead actor in Slumdog Millionaire (2008), which won eight Oscars, including Best Picture. You care about Ramanujan. You want to see him succeed. You’re concerned when he starts coughing uncontrollably. You hope he makes it home to his wife in Indian, but you are equally pulling for him to break through the prejudice and arrogance of the college elite to see him understood for his work as well. The emotion is as genuine as the settings. I’m predicting Oscar for this movie. Coming soon: We will look at the Film Camp work from last week!

KYLO-REN a senior Lab mix with a lot of luster left in his life! His favorite thing to do at the shelter is to play fetch in the yard with his beloved tennis ball. Kylo-Ren is house broken and politely whines to let you know he has to go outside. If you are looking for an older companion with still a lot of youth left, Kylo-Ren would be perfect for you!

SPIKE is a loving five-year-old male. He is the favorite of all shelter staff and volunteers because he is extremely affectionate and calm. He loves to take leisurely walks with his friends at the shelter. The shelter offers him a blanket in his kennel at night because he looks sad when the day is over and everyone starts to leave. Adopt Today!

JASMINE is a senior Australian Cattle Dog who is a sweet and calm girl. She walks nicely on a leash and gets along with cats, dogs and children! For a family that wants a settled companion and someone who is affectionate, Jasmine is the perfect match. Adopt and give Jasmine a home to live out the rest of her years!

Either time’s moving faster, or those “once in a decade” storms aren’t so “once in a decade” anymore. Spray foam insulation can’t slow down time, but it’s the only insulation to receive FEMA’s highest flood resistance rating. All while making your home more comfortable in any weather.

PIP was found in a trap left in the rain! She was rummaging through a person’s trash because little Pip was starving. She came into the shelter soaked to the bone squeaking away for some help. That’s how her name came to be “Pip” squeak. She is looking for a warm home with lots of food! Can you be the comfort she is looking for? Adopt today!

BESSIE is the picture perfect little lady. Although the shelter accomadations are adequate, Bessie would much prefer a nice quality home. If you are looking for a pretty cat like Bessie, look no further. Come by the shelter today and give this cutie the home of her dreams!

PETUNIA is a purebred, declawed, 4 year old Persian cat. She would do best as a single cat in a quiet household. The “Princess” of the house is what would suit her best! Stop in at the shelter and adopt this little fluffball today!
