Ramblings From The Editor

C

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

an’t say I’m convinced by the $8 million (or is it $9m or $10m — I’ve read all three numbers?) construction project at Exit 0 on the Garden State Parkway. I understand there were accidents, including the bizarre statistic that one property at the end of the Parkway was struck 28 times before the frustrated owner demolished it, but I can see a couple issues already with the new design. You now have to complete a loop-deloop in order to head north on the Parkway. This replaced the previous system, where you had to have your wits about you when you drove into northbound traffic. That was definitely flawed and dangerous. But the new design seems far from perfect. First of all, how many drivers do you think will take the immediate left turn that would also take you on the Parkway north, thereby avoiding the need to go all the way around? The same kind of cranially challenged drivers who were previously confused by the ending of the Parkway could likely make that quick left by mistake, while

sneaky late-night or early-morning drivers will, I bet, make a quick detour, rather than go all the way around. And when you DO go all the way around, you have to merge into the fast lane of traffic, which has never struck me as a good idea. I’ve driven the Parkway back and forward several hundred times and have had dozens of scary moments coming off rest stops and merging with fast traffic — some drivers just don’t get it, and don’t move aside to let you in.

While the eradication of traffic lights at exits 9 and 10 were a very good thing, there’s a little issue there, too. Given my wife’s lifelong love affair with Stone Harbor, I have to take exit 10 very often, and here again there is confusion. The signs pointing to both the north and south lanes of the Parkway are placed BEYOND the actual turn instead of before it. Now, I’m no civil engineer or highway expert, but I’m pretty sure signage usually appears BEFORE you make your turn. I’m certain there has been some scary confusions up there, too. And don’t get me started on the genius who changed the Wildwood exit from 4B to 4A. Guess who had to watch thousands of dollars worth of Exit 4B merchandise (which used to be sold at Morey’s Piers) turn to dust? Which is why hundreds of Exit Zero fans now go to bed with super-soft, high quality Exit 4B T-shirts (courtesy of the 80%-off sale that just ended). Speaking of Wildwood, and Parkway frustrations, we had a great meal with Jack and Karen Morey at their Jumbo’s Eatery the

Page 14 other night. We headed back to Cape May via Ocean Drive, super-ready for bed, only to be diverted on to the Parkway north, all the way back to Wildwood, where we had to get on Route 9 in order to return to Cape May. Again, I’m no expert, but it wasn’t possible to have kept one entrance into Cape May open? You know the worst thing about all this? I can’t blame a single bit of it on Mayor Ed Mahaney. Now for a public project that I think has been a resounding success. Although there have been some naysayers who wax nostalgic about their memories of old Rotary Park (particularly the bandstand), I think the new design is beautiful (particularly the bandstand). The previous park was a somewhat random collection of trees, a few benches and a decaying wooden bandstand. What’s going up in its place is an artfully conceived, expertly designed public space bordered by a beautiful, ornate iron fence, with what I think is a wonderful bandstand as the centerpiece. A lot of people have come together to make this happen, but the big shout-out has to go to Curtis Bashaw, who has steered this project with a combination of tenacity and imagination. He created the annual Ice Ball, which has so far raised close to $450,000, all

of which went to Rotary Park, and he was very hands-on with the park’s design. It’s a beauty of an addition to town — congratulations to all who were involved. Congratulations, also, to Rob Sheehan, who once again finished number one in the recent police chief test. One day I hope he will return to his rightful

³

position as chief of Cape May PD. For that to happen, there will likely have to be a change of mayor (see about 77 previous columns on this subject). The universe welcomed another angel into its ranks on Monday. Rest in peace, Kirsten Moffatt... your light was dimmed way too soon. xox

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

detest coups. Excepting of course Scottish Highland coos. Ahaha... my little joke. Though from the blank looks on the faces of my household staff, who are gathered to a man (and dog) to listen to me dictate this to my faithful manservant, Kitchener, as always on a Friday evening, it is wasted on them. Pearls before swine, I say! The thought came to mind when listening to my wind-up radio: every household device in the D’Catur Mansion is wind-up, to prepare for the day when civilization collapses and electricity will be scarce unless I find a score of muscular young men and women to sit on the exercise bikes in the basement and pedal until covered in a fine sheen of sweat and... anyway... enough of these postapocalytic whimsies. I was listening to the BBC while trusted household staff shaved me and those dreadful tales came on of a city plunged into chaos, mayhem and brutality. Then after that regular Wildwood update, there was a short item on Turkey. We used to be big on coups here in Cape May, of course, after our short-lived

fad of revolutions. I remember the day the police staged a coup (in protest at a lack of recent coups) and stormed city hall. Well, I say “stormed”, when I mean “walked slowly and carefully on account of carefully carrying trays of donuts and coffee. Not an hour later the firefighters staged a counter-coup because they could not find donuts anywhere in town, and within 10 minutes after that, Cape May Stage mounted a third coup because they hate to miss out when there’s high drama, and happened to be on the way to rehearsals for Macbeth, and so were armed

with wooden swords and dressed in some mean-looking ruffs. It must have been a few minutes after THAT when the rest of the townsfolk turned up in a state of high dudgeon and mounted a coup of their own to end the kind of government that would hold no fewer than three coups without involving them. Well, there we were, all crammed in the building, when the city’s working chimpanzees rose up as one and damn me if THEY didn’t stage their own coup! It consisted of sliding a broom through the door handles and locking us all in until we agreed to end their servitude and deliver three tons of peanuts to them instantly. Well, I have never head so many coups since that flock of pigeons nested in the Mansion. Ahaha. LAUGH, damn you all! Well, the humiliation (not to mention the cost to the city of buying all those peanuts at short notice: we were gouged by Ocean City’s peanut sellers) was too great to bear and from that day most types of apes and peanuts were banned in Cape May.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, to the lighthouse!

ometimes things don’t go as planned. You get a late start, and you find yourself standing cheekby-jowl in line on a muggy, drizzly summer day, preparing to walk cheek-by-rump up 199 steps with a small sweaty hand grasping yours. You may ask yourself, “Why am I taking this kid to the lighthouse?” Then, when you get to the top, and the refreshing breeze whips your hair around, and you are the one clinging tightly as you look down at the ocean and the bay and the town, you’ll say, “Oh. This is why.” Then, months later, you open an envelope to find a picture that same kid drew in school. The crayoned caption reads, “I went to New Jersey.” The picture is the Cape May Lighthouse. On top of the lighthouse, he has drawn a smiling, very tall version of himself, next to a smiling, wild-haired blob that is supposed to be you. That’s why you take kids to the lighthouse. Tourists have been visiting the Cape May Lighthouse since it was built in 1859, and sometimes it seems they all visit on

the same day. Bring the kids anyway, along with an extra dose of patience and a bottle of water. Kids don’t remember the aggravation. They remember setting a goal to climb all those steps, and meeting it. They remember the giant lens, and the lighthouse keeper who was always on duty, and the sailors who found their way home. They remember what you taught them about the daymark and Augustin Fresnel and that ATON stands for “aid to navigation” long after you yourself have forgotten. They keep the pirate hat they made at the crafts table, and take pictures of their face paint before it sweats away. And you - you get

learn that “wickie” is not just old slang for a lighthouse keeper, but, doubled, is also new slang for “cool,” as in that car is “wickie wickie.” You get to laugh like a little kid again, and you bank some points against future nursing home visits. It’s a pretty good bargain. The Cape May Lighthouse located in Cape May Point State Park, Lower Township. On Wednesdays through August 17, the Cape May Lighthouse offers Family Fun days from 9am to 2pm. There’s face painting, a craft station — make that pirate hat — and vendors selling arts and crafts. On August 7, celebrate National Lighthouse Day, with crafts, songs and more. National Lighthouse Day recognizes the importance of lighthouses in American history and encourages the restoration and repair of lighthouses across the country. It costs $8 to climb the lighthouse, $5 for children 3-12. It’s technically free to bring kids under 3 but do yourself a favor and don’t. Parking is free. Next week: Bacon, Bourbon and Blues

Photographer Kathy Fallon’s gorgeous coffee table book is a love letter to the ocean and the beach. A Coastal Journey is filled with compelling, inspiring photography from Cape May, the Wildwoods and the Outer Banks.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am very much in love with a man who cannot commit. I broke it off with him a year ago because he wouldn’t divorce his wife. Then he sweet-talked me back. Shortly after, I popped by his house only to find him in the kitchen having breakfast with another woman – one whom I came to find out he has been involved with for years. Then I let him charm me back again only to find out he has been seen with a third woman. He has no intention of divorcing his wife, nor of giving up girlfriend #2. But he is so very generous with his attentions and gifts. This might be my last chance at love. — Two-Timed Dear Two-Timed Cannot commit? The Answer Lady’s eyes are rolling. Seems like he is over-committed.

Wise answers to perplexing questions

One wonders where he gets all his energy. It cannot all come from a prescription. You have two choices: join the harem and take what you can get when you can get it or come to the realization that you are worthy of better. Why don’t you take a health break? Your first stop must be Cape May Day Spa. A Cape May Detox Body Wrap is in order. Then take yourself over to Cape May Point State Park and enjoy a nice nature walk. While walking, decide what it is you think you’re getting from this “relationship.” And ask yourself if it’s worth it.

Dear Answer Lady About a year ago I got fired from my job. I felt the manager was unfair and told him so. One of the reasons I told him so was because he was mistreating my best friend. She subsequently left the job as well. Last week, I came to find out through the grapevine that the same manager asked her to come back and she did. She’s been working there for over a month. Meanwhile, we’ve been out to lunch together several times. She never said a word. I don’t know how she could have gone back there, let alone not tell me. — Betrayed Dear Betrayed She might have gone back for any number of reasons, most of them involving money and ego. Her duplicity is the problem. Why hide the fact? Why make you find out through the gossip mill. Clearly, she feels guilty and unable to face you. You might want to put this “friendship” in the deep freeze for a while. Meanwhile, pop over to Sunset Liquors. Pick up a bottle of champagne. Watch the sunset at the Cove while sipping the bubbly and put this chapter behind you.

Bird Droppings

M

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

ost bird watchers suffer from binocular block. You won’t find this term in Google. I just made it up. Binocular block is a state of mind that prompts experienced birders to only start seriously looking for birds when their binoculars are seated over their noses. It’s a sort of optical myopia. You’re proud of your magical device so you grow dependent on it. The reality is that most birds are detected by the unaided eye. What gives most birds away is motion. They walk, hop, fly, probe, pick and wing flick. Your eyes are jammed with rod cells whose primary function is detecting motion. What takes time is training your brain to ascribe significance to clues like a vibrating branch or a leaf moving on a windless day. Over time you will develop exceptional peripheral vision. This will help you find more birds and make you a better automobile driver, too. Yesterday I spent a few minutes with a new birder whose detection package was still in its formative stage. On two occasions bald eagles flew close by. She detected neither. Yep.

Binocular Block. She’d left her binoculars in the car and deprived of her optical crutch, just went into a semi-dormant state. Binocular block affects identification, too. Birders often waste their most productive moments of studying trying to locate and focus upon the bird in their binocular. Half of the identification process is conducted before you begin your binocular study. With the unaided eye, you can assess size and shape and basic color and pattern. You can also take in the big picture. Birds are tied

to specific habitat. Binocular views just offer a magnified slice of the world. Homework assignment: The next time you jump some bird, resist the temptation to slam binoculars to your eyes. First, try identifying the bird with your naked eye and then use your binoculars to see whether you were right. Remember: Eyes find; binoculars study. Guard against Binocular Block before it becomes a habit. This writer teaches a two-hour introductory course to bird watching beginning at 2pm, Wednesdays at the Cape May Bird Observatory 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point where these and other avocational tips are discussed. (Course size is small. Reservations are recommended. Call 609-884-2736.) Or you can join me (and other leaders) Monday mornings at 7:30am at the Nature Conservancy Preserve on Sunset Boulevard. New birders(of all ages) are most cordially invited. You bring the expectation, we supply the birds (expect about 50 species). Go online to the CMBO website for details about this and other morning walks ww.birdcapemay.org. Cost is $10 per person.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

T

wo animated movies are no doubt helping parents beat the blues (and heat) this summer. Finding Dory is the latest from Disney/Pixar, and The Secret Life of Pets is the newest offering from the creators of the minions. Finding Dory is the sequel to the smash hit Finding Nemo (2003). The film is spectacular in its animation, and it moves. I just wished it moved me more. The story is familiar: a sweet little fishy protagonist, Dory (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres) has lost her family. If the film has one elevated quality, it’s that it places a character with disabilities (namely, short-term memory loss) as a lead. This follows the Nemo character who also had a disability. This element is so subtle, it’s subdued (subsequently missed). Throughout the film, I was entertained by all the underwater antics. But for all its adventure in the deep, the film stays on the shallow end of storyline. This is not to dissuade anyone — it’s a high-quality feature and great fun to watch. But the cathartic moment is when Dory tells new friend Hank

Fishy tales and puppy stories abound (an octopus played by Ed O’Neill), that life is better when you don’t have a plan — not particularly profound. I’m not a plan-happy person myself, but telling kids to ditch the planning may not be the best message to send. But never mind. I’m sure that kids didn’t pick up on that point anyway. So on to a film that stays above water (well… mostly). The Secret Life of Pets is a rollicking good time that frankly I didn’t expect to be all that meaningful — just fun. And it

was. Meet Max, a cute little dog who absolutely adores his owner. It’s just the two of them, enjoying life and spending as much time as humanly (doggedly?) possible. That is, until Duke enters the picture. He’s a dog about 10 times the size of Max and their owner “absolutely had to save him from the pound.” The voice talent in this film includes Louis C.K. (Max) and Modern Family’s Eric Stonestreet (Duke), as well as Albert Brooks, Dana Carvey and Steve Coogan. Kevin Hart steals the show as Snowball, the fluffy bunny who is one angry leader of the flushable pets gang. Max and Duke do not get along. And when their hired walker temporarily loses them at the dog park, the adventure begins. A run-in with dog catchers, the nasty sewer gang of flushable pets, and their own taste for danger (and sausage) leads them down some terribly wrong roads. Finding their way back (as with Dory) is worth going along for the ride (or swim as the case may be).

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

PIP was found in a trap left in the rain! She was rummaging through a person’s trash because little Pip was starving. She came into the shelter soaked to the bone squeaking away for some help. That’s how her name came to be “Pip” squeak. She is looking for a warm home with lots of food! Can you be the comfort she is looking for? Adopt today!

SCARLETT is a sophisticated, long haired brown cat that enjoys leisurely days of grooming and adoration. She needs someone who knows about good tastes in toys and treats. As you can tell, she is quite the little lady. Make Scarlett a part of your family today!

DOTSON got his name because of the spot on his lip, which looks more like a beauty mark! His previous owner passed away and the family had no choice but to give Dotson up. He is patiently waiting and hoping for another family to play and take care of him. Don’t let this beautiful boy wait any longer. Adopt today!
