The Activity Column

A

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, helping out Mother Nature

lthough the calendar fixes an exact date, we each have our own little ways of deciding when spring has sprung. Maybe it’s a fragment of a robin’s egg on the sidewalk, or an enthusiastic chorus of birdsong. It could be the extra daylight after work that prompts you to take a stroll, or the warm breeze that invites you to linger at the mailbox. Spring encourages you to do more, and move more, and turn up the music. You’re motivated to throw open the windows and give the house a good cleaning. You take the ice scraper out of the car and pack up your mittens. Your green thumb is itching to spruce up your little patch of green. And Earth Day is here to remind us that Mother Earth needs a little work, too. Mark Earth Day by donating a few hours spring cleaning Cape May. The Nature Center hosts an Earth Day and Marine Debris Clean-Up on Saturday, April 30 from 9am to noon. Here’s a chance to learn about gardening while you assist the nature center staff with basic maintenance chores. Plant, mulch, deadhead, weed and prune your way

through the center’s grounds. Learn to recognize the plants that invite wildlife to your backyard as you help to coax this vibrant community resource into bloom. Clean away litter from the harbor beaches so you can enjoy them all summer long. Bring your own tools, like gloves and rakes, and wear sturdy shoes and clothes that can get dirty. Wear a hat, sunscreen and insect repellent. Light refreshments will be available. Don’t plan on going straight out to lunch afterward — you’re going to need a shower first. Don’t skip

the morning coffee because you will work hard, but you’ll also learn, have fun and meet new people. This is a great activity for your scout troop or other community group. No preregistration is required, but they would appreciate a heads up if you are bringing a large group. Call Gretchen Whitman at 609898-8848, extension 10. The Nature Center of Cape May is located at 1600 Delaware Avenue. The cleanup is timed to coincide with Clean Ocean Action’s statewide Beach Sweeps. On Sunday, May 1, from 2:30 to 5, you can help out at Cape May National Wildlife Reserve Headquarters, 24 Kimbles Beach Road, Cape May Courthouse. They’re calling this free family event Horseshoe Craba-palooza, and it features expert speakers teaching about horseshoe crabs and the shorebirds who depend on them. You can also learn more about ReTurn the Favor, an effort to save stranded horseshoe crabs. Then, there’s a beach walk and cleanup. Visit friendsofcapemayrefuge.org. Help Mother Earth put her best face forward.

The Old Fogey

P

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

rince is dead!” my faithless manservant, Kitchener, shrieked, running through the library in a right old state. “Say it’s not so!” I wailed, “I am not ready to take the throne...” At this, Kitchener stopped, a frown wrinkling his tear-stained face. “What?” he said, all trembling. “You make even this tragedy about yourself?” “The Prince is dead, you just told me,” I replied, “so it is off to Moldovia with me to take my rightful place in front of the throne. And you with me, of course! Oh, and you should know now that everything is about me.” (Moldovia has, as everyone knows, no king or queen, but a Chihuahua regent, who sits atop the throne and rules his or her people through a prince who sits on the floor and interprets the canine monarch’s barks, growls and genital-licking. For reasons too tiresome to go into here, yours truly is the next prince, and that is not, I assure you, a role I am looking forward to: Chihuahuas can be mercurial and malicious, and decisions taken in their tiny overheated brains are seldom good ones.

Also, if I must pretend to serve a dog-monarch I would need that anumal to be a Yorkshire terrier, much like Young Albert though ideally with more of a moral compass (when Albert was briefly Cape May’s mayor, his tenure was bloody and ended after a wee with a popular uprising). Unlike that time when Wildwood was taken over by a Doberman pinscher, who assumed utter control of civil authority and turned that once-great city into a cruel dystopia. When was this, I hear you ask? Well, it was a wee while ago and persists to thos day, I assure you. It all makes sense now, right? And you think this Great Canine Coup is over?

Look closely at one of the leading presidential candidates — no, not that one with the melted head, the other one, who is most obviously a Pomeranian, with all that breed’s usual grandiose lunacy and luxuriant pelt. Worry not: like all Pomeranians he will take the stage at the crucial moment and defecate loudly and with abandon. Maybe literally, though I was thinking figuratively.) Anyway, once we had settled the identity of the deceased prince, and I had calmed Kitchener down a little by playing “Little Red Corvette” 3,000 times with the volume up and all the windows wide open (as we had when Bowie passed, and Mercury and Cilla Black), we were able to restore order, though I did note that Young Albert had the the beginning of the drama sloped off to his room and had emerged some time later dressed in a tiny mink cape and rakish crown perched on his tiny head. When he realised we were not Moldiviä bound, he looked livid and threw the royal accoutremont to the floor. I think he will bear watching, that one: a Yorkie with an eye on a throne is not to be taken lightly.

his is likely the only column treating the US Masters that will not focus upon Jordan Spieth’s implosion on the back nine of the final round a couple weeks ago. This column is about the background orchestration, more specifically cardinals Celebrated for its flowering trees, it is clear that Augusta National also boasts a healthy population of northern cardinals. There was rarely a moment during the airing of the tournament that a cardinal was not singing in the background, yet not once did a sportscaster mention this, nor did a camera ever focus upon one of these beautiful sparrows. Come on guys. You can follow a white ball in flight but you can’t offer a five-second glimpse of a world-class songbird that is sitting in plain view on an open perch. Cape May residents need not drive to Georgia to hear or see cardinals. It’s singing up a song every morning and this time of year throughout the day from some lofty perch in a well vegetated yard near you. Some might argue that sports enthu-

siasts aren’t interested in birds — but the northern cardinal is the only bird to be the symbol of both a professional baseball team and a professional football franchise. You’ll find cardinals painted on mailboxes. Season celebrating flags, holiday cards and of course baseball caps and football helmets. About the only place you don’t see them is on the Golf Channel. So come on guys, throw the poor birders a bone. After half an hour of Ricky Fowler’s orange jumpsuit, how about 15 seconds of

cardinal red. You could double your viewing audience as armchair birders all over North America tune in for a bit of armchair birding. Think about it... 47,000,000 potential avid viewers in the US alone, all hoping for a glimpse of some regional specialty that is endemic to the course — rose-breasted grosbeaks in New York, great kiskadee in Texas, vermillion flycatcher in Arizona, magnificent frigatebird in Florida. So how about it, you camera operators? Would it hurt to pan across a water hazards now and again. Give me a chance of picking great egret, American coot. Green kingfisher or eared grebe for my North American course list. We’ll discuss world list possibilities another time. But what North American birder wouldn’t want to get Australian magpie or a desert wheatear on their World Golf Channel List. Only the airlines who are going to lose revenue could possibly complain. Heck, we could even make this a category on the World Series of Birding. Hire Michael O’Brien to referee the vocalization category.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My mother lost 50 pounds in the last year and while we are very proud of her, we are concerned that she no longer enjoys going out to eat with us. Food has always been a focal point for family gatherings and she just sits and orders a small appetizer and water, looking longingly at the rest of us. Plus, we think she is getting too thin, so we are also worried about her health. Should we confront her or get someone else to do it? — Wasting Away in Cape May Dear Wasting Away It almost sounds as if she thinks her eating habits are an addiction — which they may be — but one can live without alcohol (although the Answer Lady would find it difficult), while one cannot live and not eat.

Wise answers to perplexing questions

Perhaps the best thing is to enlist her family physician. Have a talk with him/her and maybe go with her the next time she sees the doctor. Meanwhile, take the spotlight off food for a while. Take mom on a shopping spree at West End Garage. You could spend an afternoon there looking around. Before you leave, buy her something special. A hat, a piece of jewelry, a dress she looks particularly stylish in — something she can wear so that when she looks in the mirror, she remembers the day, the part you

all played in it and how much she is loved. Dear Answer Lady I told a good friend of mine something in confidence only to find out she told several people. Now, everybody knows what I didn’t want anyone to know. I told her because I needed a sympathetic ear. Now, I still have the problem, plus the fact that my private affairs are out there in the universe for everyone to comment on. I think this is going to be a dealbreaker when it comes to my friendship with her. — Betrayed Dear Betrayed As the Answer Lady’s daddy always said, “A secret is only a secret when one person knows about it. After that, it’s common knowledge.” No need to end the friendship. There is a need, however, to not confide in her. Instead, go on a nature walk at Cape May Point State Park. It will clear your head, clear your lungs and give you the coping mechanisms you need to solve your problem. If you still need to talk, choose a minister, a counselor or someone who doesn’t move in the same social circles.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

D

VD alert! Or should I say On Demand alert? I’m just not thrilled with anything in theaters this week, so here goes my “home view” review! What happens when you rent both The Peanuts Movie and the latest James Bond flick, Spectre, in the same weekend? The one movie column you thought you’d never see — forget Batman v Superman. Try Bond v Brown! You’re probably asking what these two movies could have in common. Well… okay not much… except one thing: formulas. You what I’m talking about. In every James Bond movie, you sort of know what you’re going to get. Bad guys who are larger than life, dicey situations that put our hero on the brink of death (defied, of course), and a potentially world devastating bomb (or two) that’s going to go off in 9…8…7… For Peanuts, Snoopy in aerial fights with the Red Baron, Charlie Brown doing something embarrassingly wrong, and Sally crushing on Linus. Is a formulaic movie inherently bad?

James Bond and Charlie Brown... what could these two possibly have in common? Not always. The Peanuts Movie uses old standbys, but it works somehow. For those of us who grew up on Peanuts, you’ll enjoy the story and the effects. And you’ll appreciate a simple message and sentimentality that is rarely seen in modern storytelling. The story? Charlie Brown, always acting the fool, wants to make a good impression on the little red hair girl. He’ll get help from man’s best friend. But even with fantastic sequences as Snoopy uses his imagination, the film is admittedly tame by today’s standards. Kids may not get the emotion that we

carry from our childhood for these beloved characters (after all, the producers were not going for extreme humor or gross antics). Still I thought it was touching and had character. My girlfriend’s seven-year-old granddaughter, Jazzy? She fell asleep watching. Spectre was your garden-variety Bond but fell short of unique elements that could have made the film stand out. Take the villain. I was looking forward to seeing Christoph Waltz as 007’s enemy, Blofeld. I’m a big fan of the Waltz, who has won Oscar gold twice for his supporting roles in Django Unchained (2012) and Inglorious Basterds (2009). Maybe the director of those films, Quentin Tarantino, knew how to play Waltz, but he was sadly underutilized in this film. There was action in Spectre, and of course several last minute reversals of fortune, but there wasn’t the same… oh I don’t know… fun… such as you found in the latest installment of Mission Impossible, reviewed last year. So see this film and enjoy, just don’t expect to be blown away. In this Red Box throwdown of Bond v Brown... Brown wins.

Then they were forced to move again but this time to a shelter where Bud and his sisters were separated permanately. CHOWDER was found outside of a local restaurant. He still gets freaked out when meeting new people. But years of being “shooed” and yelled at makes it a little hard for him to trust. One thing Chowder loves is food, especially canned wet food. Make an offer and maybe he will be just the cat you’re looking for!

“I have a rental property south of the canal. I always had problems renting during the summer season because it was not close to the beach. Several real estate agencies took it on with 4 bedrooms 3 bathrooms little success. After many frustrating beautiful canal views, experiences, I found Ed Connolly open Please call for rates. and available to give my property the attention it needed. That was 5 years ago. Since then I have had a minimum 80% occupancy rate during the season with spring and fall rentals as well. I highly recommend Ed and CoastlineRealty to anyone in need of real estate expertise.” — Bill
