Ramblings From The Editor

A

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

nd still the rains come... who remembers a rainier April and May? It’s the wettest spring I can recall since I came to the States in 1998. The forecast looks good for this Friday and Saturday — but after that, another week of wetness. It’s a very British thing to talk about the weather. Usually, the weather here is so predictably warm and sunny in the summer months that there’s really little to talk about. But this... sheesh, it’s no good. Speaking of rain, it has a dark side I’ve recently discovered. Last week, my wife wrote a story about fertilizer for another publication, and she’s been rambling on (in an alluring and compelling way, of course) about the negative effects of the stuff ever since. Here’s the gist: precipitation carries it from your lawn into the ocean, where the fertilizer begins working its dubious magic on algae, leading to an unnatural growth boom. Long story short, the algae suffocates the fish, reducing their population, and

that compromises our economy (secondbiggest fishing port on the eastern seaboard, remember), and likely your favorite Cape May dinner. While Cape May’s code enforcement offices are mindful of the issue (my wife would tell you they’re one of the most mindful of the Jersey Shore towns), there’s only so much they can do. New Jersey has the strictest fertilizer law in the nation, but whether people abide by it is a whole other kettle of

(poor, suffocated) fish. Here’s a hint: you’re not supposed to apply just before a rainstorm, or within 25 feet of a body of water. Better yet, don’t apply the stuff at all, and get yourself some lovely native plants from the Nature Center of Cape May that can thrive in the Cape’s sandy soil without the use of any synthetic product. A beach plum tree is always a good talking point during a Memorial Day barbeque, anyhow. Normally, I trust what a Scotsman says, but I’ll be looking at the red-headed lumberjack in the Scott’s lawncare ads in a whole new way from now on. Here’s the worst part: fertilizer usage increases the amount of jellyfish in the water. In fact, they thrive in oxygen-poor water. Think of it as environmental karma. Want to keep the tentacles off your legs this summer? Keep the fertilizer off your lawn. And now back to Memorial Day weekend. Did I mention there might be sunshine on Friday and Saturday? (I looked up a dictionary for a definition of the word, and

Page 14 it states: direct sunlight unbroken by cloud, especially over a comparatively large area. I mention that just in case you’d forgotten what sunshine looks like.) This Friday I will be kicking off my holiday weekend with a book signing at Congress Hall. I will be joining Curtis Bashaw, who helped me write Tommy’s Folly, a handsome coffee table book that tells the remarkable story of Congress Hall, which this year celebrates its 200th anniversary. Come along to the pool bar between 6-8pm and enjoy complimentary wine and snacks. And buy a copy of the damn book — it’s gorgeous, if I do say so myself. On Sunday, everyone is invited to kick off the hotel’s birthday celebrations by attending a FREE concert by Bay Atlantic Symphony on the lawn (please let it not rain) at 7pm. Guest of honor will be Christie Whitman, who officially opened the hotel in 2002 when she was New Jersey governor. Following the concert, birthday cake and champagne will be served in the ballroom. Prior to that, starting at 4:30pm, you’ll be able to tour the hotel’s newly renovated guest rooms. I well remember the weekend that Congress Hall opened. Okay, I actually don’t remember that much — free drinks will do that — but it was the launchpad for a whole new life for me, leaving New York City for lil’ old Cape May. So this weekend will bring back a lot of nice memories. Hope to see you around. Finally, congratulations to The Ebbitt Room, The Red Store and H&H Seafood for being included in Philadelphia magazine’s Best 20 Shore Restaurants list. Okay, congratulations also to Exit Zero Cookhouse, which also made that list. Not gonna say we deserve it, but I’ll take it. Now we just have to not mess it up. Happy holiday weekend!

The Old Fogey

H

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

ere are some official* statistics about Memorial Day in Cape May. The busiest Memorial Day weekend saw one million and seven visitors come to the city (it was the year Cape May was temporarily granted the status of the capital of these United States, an honor granted after President Truman visited and got terribly drunk in Martini Beach. Sadly, he sobered up a week later and the offer was rescinded). An average Memorial Weekend sees 250,000 hot dogs sold in Cape May, a million pounds of saltwater taffy and enough pancakes to cover three football fields, while the maple syrup would fill an olympic pool. An extra 400,000 copies of this newspaper are printed this weekend, the flood of income from that issue typicallly allowing the brutish Scotch proprietor to purchase another estate in Scotland, with the eventual plan being his triumphant return to take the throne. The words “Darn Shoebies” are said on average 200 times an hour, more than “Welcome To Cape May!” (198 times an hour) and both dwarfed by the traditional Cape May

phrase “Tell us how great it is here compared to where you live!” (1,000 times an hour). Last year, 297 people were bitten by dogs over the course of the weekend, 296 of them being blamed on Young Albert, and 297 of them actually being Young Albert (he framed that dumb Doodle over on Beach for the 297th but I know it was him...) Precisely 120,000 people go to see the Concrete Ship, of which 119,999 ask “it it real?” A further 24 purchase the aforementioned ship from one of our more enterprising citizens. A similarly credulous 3,400 purchase “Cape May Diamonds” from dubious sources

for around $200 apiece, and a total of one lucky soul stumbles upon a solid gold dubloon from Captain Kidd’s treasure (left there by my good self, to keep the legend alive). One thousand people will, around 11pm in our local bars, declare their intention to “never leave”, of which eight will stay for reasons morbid or legal, a dozen will move here in the spirit of blind optmism and be stark staring mad by spring and one will embed him or herself in local life with such enthusiasm that in a decade we have to sink ’em off the Point in a weighted wicker basket for the good of the city. Four visitors will fall victim to the beach tractor, three to the wolves and two to roving bands of Wildwood cannibals and one to an official duel after a careless comment that might suggest Cape May has a minor flaw. *Statistics collected by The D’Catur Information Bureau, comprising myself and my manservant Kitchener drinking a bottle of malt and shooting the breeze with fellow barflies. We are positive that they are correct within a tiny margin of error of 100 per cent.

The Activity Column

S

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, Memorial Day Weekend!

ince 1971, Memorial Day has been the unofficial start of summer. That’s the (last?) year Congress did something sensible, and decreed that the holiday would be observed on the last Monday in May, to create a three-day weekend for federal employees. As anyone who has ever sung Nine to Five by Dolly Parton can attest, any three-day weekend is a wonderful thing. A three-day weekend at the start of summer is truly glorious. Get started on your summer fun by trying something new. Try a new restaurant — Cape May is chock full of them. This year, spice it up at the Exit Zero Cookhouse, or check out the new decor at Harry’s Ocean Bar and Grille. Discover why there’s a whole store devoted to peanut butter, and then cross Carpenter’s Lane to find out why people are raving about RSK Doughnuts. Rent a golf cart and take a low-speed spin. Try parasailing. Go fly a kite, or watch the experts fly at the Wildwoods International Kite Festival, on the Beach at Rio Grande Avenue in Wildwood. The Kite Sales tent opens on Friday, so you can buy your own

and take flight. Visit the Aviation Museum at the Cape May County Airport on Forrestal Road in Rio Grande and let stories of heroes set your spirit soaring. Feed your inner artist. Ocean Galleries welcomes artist Charles Fazzino, the Master of 3D Pop Art. The exhibit opens on Friday, May 27, and runs through Monday, May 30, from 10:00 until 10:00. Meet the artist on Saturday night or Sunday. See The Whipping Man at Cape May Stage and ponder the complexities of war and slavery. Shop the Cape May Artists’ Coop-

erative for works by local talent. Stock your summer rental at the Kiwanis Club Yard Sale, starting at 7:00am on Saturday, at the Kiwanis Clubhouse on Beach Drive in Cape May. Find classic vinyl records, books, bikes, and household goods, including furniture. Find vintage jewelry, scarves, and other accessories. Bring coffee and linger — browsers are welcome, because they rarely leave empty handed. Later, shop the streets for other garage sales. Toast the Bicentennial Celebration of Congress Hall on Sunday, May 29 at 7pm. Lounge on the lawn and listen to the Bay Atlantic Symphony, and then stop by the ballroom for a free glass of champagne. See Tanya Tucker at Convention Hall on Saturday, and the Atlantic Brass Band on Sunday. Mark Memorial Day’s true meaning by remembering those who died in service to our nation. Join the City of Cape May, the American Legion Harry Snyder Post 193 and VFW Post 386 to honor our fallen soldiers at a Memorial Day Ceremony on Monday, May 30 at 11 in Convention Hall.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My mother died a few months back after a long bout with Alzheimer’s. I know people mean well, but they are always coming up to me and telling me stories about my mother, which sparks memories and immediately reduces me to tears. I would like them to stop but don’t know how to tell them. Can’t they see by my tears that I do not want to be reminded of these things? — Reduced to Tears Dear Reduced The Answer Lady is concerned by your unwillingness to celebrate your mother’s life. Memories are all we have of our life on earth, be it pictorial or anecdotal. Your mother was obviously loved by many and you should take great comfort in that. The thing is, we cannot deal with our own death until we learn to deal

Wise answers to perplexing questions

with the death of those close to us. In order to do that we must break through what may seem to be painful in order to get to a place where we can heal and smile when memories are evoked instead of crying. Who wants to be crying all the time? You need to treat yourself to a long, luxurious trip to Cape May Day Spa. Try their Life is Beauty-full treatment to heal and put your chi back in order so you can cope and put that smile back on your face. Dear Answer Lady I started dating a widower in the last six

month and I like him very much. I think we might have a future, save for one minor problem. He expects me to cook. His wife apparently was a gourmet cook and they never ate out. I eat out all the time. I stopped cooking when my last child graduated and left home. Now, my idea of cooking is boiling a package of pasta and throwing butter and parmesan over it. I was a good cook but I have no interest in being that woman again. What should I do? — Overcooked Dear Overcooked Encourage your new beau to learn to cook. You can help him and it will be great fun, because you will make it fun. The Answer Lady also encourages a compromise in which you do cook once or twice a week. You cook together — with the idea that he will be on his own eventually —once or twice a week and you eat out or get take-out once or twice a week. And cooking at home needn’t be gourmet, but rather focused on being simple and yummy. And FUN. As to eating out, George’s is always a good choice and the very definition of yummy, nutritious and delicious.

Bird Droppings

C

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

hirp... “No way,” I said to the expanse of lawn beyond the porch. But yes, it was the season’s first American Robin. Out of the nest, calling for mom or dad to bring the grub. Robins typically lay three or four eggs which are easily accommodated by the mud and grass nest. But before young robins are able to fly, the nest becomes too snug to accommodate nestlings. One or more typically set off to find more elbow room. This means a tumble to terra firma where they are at the mercy of snakes, cats, dogs, lawn mowers and other lethal enterprises. The adults typically lure their nestling into some protective cover but seem unable to keep their adventurous young from signally their position with food-begging calls. Snakes can’t hear, but dogs and cats hear fine unless their owner wants them to do something. What to do. Nothing. Leave it to the adult robins to mind their nestling. If you are cutting the grass. It’s fine to move the nestling out of the way.

But a nestling robin already! Heck there are some local breeders that have not even arrived yet and wintering birds that still linger. Spring is a messy month — a mix of winter and summer. Last evening we even had a fire going in the wood stove. Now we’ve got the first wave of newly fledged young. Summer’s gift to the universe. As I watched the nestling hop across the lawn, I could hear an adult robin caroling up a storm. It could be the resident bird or a free

floater. Then I spotted an adult robin carrying nesting material. Time to start a new brood. It’s typical for robins to raise two or three broods in a season. Young robins are easy to tell from adults. Their tails are a nub and their breasts are heavily spotted. And, of course, the bird will be bleating to be fed. Now the big question. You’ve seen robins all your life. Do you know whether they walk or hop? I’ll supply the answer in a future column. If you don’t know, step into the back yard and learn the answer for yourself. But you are not a bird watcher, you insist. Don’t worry, there’s still time to amend that avocational shortfall. And robins will be strutting across your lawn until winter cold drives earthworms deeper than bill length. In winter, robins switch over to fruit and berries. Holly berries and apples are particularly favored. And since robins winter in our area by the thousands, a holly tree in your yard will insure you will be treated to the sight of America’s favorite thrush all through the bleak winter months.

Let’s Get Running!

RUNCAPE history & nature for the sole

Gentle ocean breezes. Leaping dolphins in the periphery. Horses clip-clopping through a Dickensian town. And guiltfree cocktails. (Never forget the guilt-free cocktails!) There are so many reasons to love running in Cape May. We’ll get you acquainted with all of them — nice and slow — on custom tours of America’s Original Seaside Resort. Run for the nature, run for the history, run for your life. Starts June 4 RunCape.net

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

W

hat would you do if you lost everything in the stock market? Would you kick yourself? Or would you take it out on the advisor who told you to make the investment? The latter scenario is the premise behind Money Monster, a new film starring George Clooney as Lee Gates, the fast-talking host of a zany television show focused on the stock exchange and finance. The show, with the same name as the movie title, is loosely based on Jim Cramer’s Mad Money. The story starts as Gates prepares for the day’s edition. His objective is to talk with Walt Camby (played by Dominic West), the CEO of a company that lost $800mn overnight just a few days prior. “It was a computer glitch,” explains Diane Lester, a spokesperson for the company (played by Caitriona Balfe). An unknown man posing as a delivery person somehow makes it into the set of the television show, and is immediately noticed by Patty Fenn, the show’s producer

George Clooney in Money Monster (played by Julia Roberts). That person is Kyle Budwell (played by Jack O’Connell) who makes his way on the set to confront Gates on air with a gun. He demonstrates that the gun is loaded and he’s not afraid to use it. He then proceeds to take Gates hostage and demand answers about the company that lost his only savings of $60,000 in the dramatic downturn mentioned earlier that everyone is trying to understand.

So what do you expect from a film with this premise? Do you want it to be a social commentary on greed in America? It doesn’t quite make that. Do you want it to be a suspenseful thrill ride? It comes very close. Do you want it to push over the top because of its high end actors? It doesn’t quite get there. It’s entertainment enough, but don’t expect it to last with you days or even hours after leaving the theater. The film’s director is two-time Oscar award-winning actor Jodie Foster. I don’t have an overwhelming affinity toward Foster. The films in which she’s starred are okay, and this film was okay for what it is. She’s never really impressed me as a very deep actor or (now) director. This film could have been more… oh, I don’t know… deep. But it wasn’t. However, I for one was not so disappointed when it wasn’t more. So call this one shallow, but fun to watch if you don’t mind using up a couple hours. Next week, I’ll provide some insight into a new comedy from Comedy Central’s Kay & Peele called Keanu.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

PENNY has been waiting very patiently here at the shelter for someone to take her to her forever home. She is a little shy at first, but doesn’t take long to warm up. She would be great for any home, but a barn would be best. If you think she’s a good fit for you, stop in at the shelter and give her a second chance at happiness!

ONYX is your classic “Tom Cat.” He may look tough, but he is a lover at heart. He can patrol your yard and keep it mouse free. Onyx is a fun-loving cat that makes great company. He would make a great addition to the family. Come into the shelter and see for yourself!

BOBBIE is a rough tumble barn buddy. She will take care of any mice or rodents you may want gone. Bobbie also loves riding in cars. She loves cars so much that she had her kittens in a car. If you want an outside female cat, Bobbie would be perfect for you. Come by the shelter and meet this cute little lady today!
