Ramblings From The Editor
D
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
on’t you just love visitors to our adorable little town? They spend so much money here, enabling the taxes to be kept at palatable levels (especially compared with the rest of the state) and keep thousands of people in employment. They add color, culture, diversity and texture to our community. Without visitors, this would be a much sadder little place. But it sure is perplexing how peculiar a minority of people act when they are on vacation. I work a lot of hours and hardly take a day off, so I know all about the pressure to ENJOY yourself and RELAX when you finally get the chance to go away for a break (in my case, I go back to Scotland every year to be rained upon, for the most part). But some people are wound up so tight the whole time they’re here that I wonder if they’d be better spending their time at home in a dark room with a 24-pack. I have a friend who opened a new store over the weekend. Not gonna name him or her, because he or she (okay, let’s just say
the grammatically incorrect they) would be mortified at me sharing this story. But this person put their heart and soul into creating a magical little spot. I figured the tourists would just love it. And the vast majority did. But there were a few dingbats who verbally abused this person for having the audacity to take over a business that had been there for quite a while. Now, it’s not as if this person kidnapped the previous owners of this spot and hid
them in a disused well while reopening their store and raking in the cash. The owners retired, and this person more or less maintained the tradition that had been going on at this store over the decades, except they really spiffed up the place in quite spectacular fashion. I’m sorry, but if you think you have the right to scream at someone because your family vacation was “ruined” because your favorite shop was no longer there, then you have to swallow one gigantic chill pill. I know a lot of business owners in this town and they work their butts off to keep their heads above water. Resorts businesses are tougher than year-round ones. Waaaaaay tougher. Then there’s restaurants... it’s not as if people didn’t warn me that restaurants were tough. But it ain’t easy dealing with cranky, hungry people who have to wait for a table or who think it’s a national disgrace that you gave up offering bread to people (everyone else does it — we figured that offering curried chips was much sexier).

Page 14 We had one group of four turn up at Exit Zero Cookhouse on Saturday at 7pm and who were very unhappy that we couldn’t seat them instantly. Let me repeat... 7pm on the Saturday of Memorial Day Weekend. They had been really excited about coming here. That’s great. But it might have been a better idea to turn up at 5:30, or 8:30. Oh, and when we say no reservations for parties under six, that’s what we mean. It doesn’t mean you can call us an hour before to tell us your party of four will be over later. Anyway, it was, overall, a pretty spectacular weekend by many accounts, particularly at Congress Hall, where I heard a magnificent party was held to celebrate the old hotel’s 200th birthday party. I was working my butt off at the restaurant so I sadly couldn’t be there, though I fully intend to celebrate Congress Hall’s big year in many ways over the next couple months. Don’t miss a wonderful art show this Saturday at SOMA NewArt Gallery. My best bud Victor Grasso is curating an art show that has attracted the work of some brilliant artists from around the country. From the west coast, there’s Shepard Fairey, who shot to fame with his Andre the Giant street posters and who designed the “Hope” posters that were the visual hallmark of Barack Obama’s first presidential campaign. From Georgia, there’s Bo Bartlett, who is one of Victor’s heroes, which must mean he’s a pretty amazing painter (I checked his Wiki page — he is). Closer to home there’s Adam Wallacavage, whose octopus sculptures are incredible. Overall, there are a dozen artists, forming a major league lineup that I don’t imagine has ever been seen in Cape May. So get your butts over to SOMA, in Carpenter’s Square Mall, this Saturday, from 6-9 to see some amazing art. Great job, Grasso!

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
have the tanning dilemma shared by all of those of Celtic origin. All over, or selective? Not for me that grotesque tanned-head-and-forearms-and-pallidbody look. Or those disgraceful white triangles joined by two pale lines that come from the otherwise wonderful Speedo. But all-over requires endless effort to avoid that hideous gradient effect and also, a chap can if not cautious, end up with his meat and two veg burned. I did of course flirt with being totally UN-tanned for some years, but the cries of “winter is coming!” whenever I stepped on the beach were distracting. I did install state-of-the-art “tanning salons” in The D’Catur Mansion in the 1950s: they were the size of station wagons and required the output of The Hoover Dam to run them all, and the timing was more of an exact science than was ideal: more than once a rash member of the staff accidentally turned the dial from 5.446 to 5.447, causing their impressive mahogany sheen to vaporize into a spreading cloud of ash. That competitive spirit may be a hoot when applied to motor racing,
dueling with rapiers and the tango (only one of these things is a euphemism) but less so when you combine fine malt whiskies, UV rays and the typical shambolic male ego. So after a fourth consecutive power bill of $30,000 and the combustion of a dozen of this city’s worthies, we offloaded them on Wildwood under the guise of “Make Yerself Smarter” machines. There is always the “Scotch and Irish” method, of course, whereby those of a pale freckly disposition lie out on the beach surrounded by aluminum foil for 12 hours coated in canola oil, and after only a day of subsequent searing pain, blistering and hallucina-
tions find their skin has thickened like leather and achieved a similar shade, until a week later when it all peels off in strips. We did, mind you, decide on a North by Northwest-inspired tecnhique for mass tanning one year, when I employed crop sprayers to douse the entire beach in George Hamiltongrade automatic tanner. It was not, I admit, an unqualified success, as it securely glued several thousand people to the sand. On the plus side, they were all a rather splendid shade of oak when eventually pried free. And there was that time when I though that a tattoo was the answer. Luckily I was disuaded from being the first adopter, and it was one of the footmen, a ghost-pale Irish lad with freckles the size of coasters. The plan was to have three million tiny dots inked on Seamus, giving the overall look of a mild creosote. Except the tattoo “artist” was a mentally deranged Scotchman who had just watched Braveheart and so poor Seamus ended up a patchwork of blue and his original translucent. F
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, Beach Blanket Bingo!
ew films capture the spirit of summer better than Beach Blanket Bingo. Released in 1965, the movie is the best in a series of frothy films featuring Frankie Avalon and Annette Funicello. The genre started with Gidget in 1959 and even brought Elvis to the beach, because teenaged ticket buyers kept coming. These movies portray an idealized summer, with no responsibility, no adults, and nothing at stake. Teenagers concoct wild romantic schemes, learn to surf, and sing into their hairbrushes, picking up some sort of life lesson on the way. The villains — random biker gangs and unscrupulous producers — are too cartoonish to be threatening. Fun is taken seriously, and many prominent performers thought enough of the films to join in. Buster Keaton gets fishy. Paul Lynde lends menace. Boris Karloff plays a guardian angel. Don Rickles appears, and judging by the reaction of the cast, goes completely off script. Annette’s bikini famously worried Walt Disney, Frankie’s short hair bucked a national trend, and audiences pretended not to notice the bad special effects. Beach Blanket Bingo
opens with the title song playing on a transistor radio and an actual game of bingo on the sand, but the real game, of course, is to find someone to share your beach blanket. Generations of Americans have gone through their teenage years relying on these movies for beach stereotypes, regardless of accuracy. Every beach has a surf shack, a live band and a mermaid. Every couple getting cozy in swimwear is Frankie and Annette. All boy surfers sport blonde highlights and bucket hats and say “Cowabunga.” All girl surfers are
either Gidget, or are willing to share a board with a boy. None of these surfers seem to mind when people dance on their boards. In these movies, the beach is always safe, there’s always a band and a crowd of people ready to dance, and adulthood is always a long way away. That carefree attitude is the beach stereotype most of us seek when we come to Cape May. Get a taste of that carefree feeling at the Rusty Nail on June 4 from 11 to 4, when Cape Resorts shows you why bingo and the beach make an irresistible combination. It’s a classic surfer beach party, complete with a crowd dancing in the sand and a fun round of Bingo by the Sandpit. Wear your best retro look. (Annette favored citrus colors, capris, highwaisted bathing suits and hairs pray. Frankie sported tiki shirts, teeny tiny trunks, and stripes.) Tell the Big Kahuna you need the afternoon off. Bump your nose on the umbrella in your fruity drink and practice your watusi. Play bingo, win prizes, and perhaps find a partner for your own beach blanket. Visit caperesorts.com for more information, and “be there or be square.”

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My wife and I do not eat meat. Often we attend charity events and expensive special events in town and find that we have little to eat. Most recently we attended a Kentucky Derby Party and every item offered was meat. We are not complainers and hate to bring attention to our plight. At the same time we find that we are always hungry. As it turns out we are finding more and more people who share our predicament. Most restaurants do a great job with options but even some of them challenge us. Please advise. — The Hungers Dear Hungers The Answer Lady’s vegetarian friends are apparently much more vocal than you and your wife and do not hesitate to remind her that they are vegetarian. Translation: “Make
Wise answers to perplexing questions
sure you make something we can eat if you want us to come to your party.” And anyone charging people to come to their event should know better. So the first step when invited is to politely remind the host/hostess that you are vegetarians. If that proves ineffective, bring a vegetarian dish with you. The hosts will either appreciate the gesture or not, but at least you will not be standing around looking like characters from Oliver Twist. Or if the hosts prove unsympathetic, eat ahead of time.
Dear Answer Lady My boss is a great lady, but she smells. For the longest time I thought it was me and kept sniffing my armpits, but she reached for something one day and there was no doubt who had the problem. What do I do? — Breathless in Cape May Dear Breathless Now that’s a conundrum. The Answer Lady hates it when people feel powerless when dealing with the ones in power. First suggestion: Get someone close to her to say something, but that’s tricky too. Spouses, for example, can often be obtuse. Second suggestion: Get a friend of yours to pose as a customer and tell her straight out. Third option: A trip to a Place on Earth and Bath Time is in order. If the problem is one of personal hygiene, a gift basket with body salts, lovely soaps, scents and deodorant would be good. But the problem might be a laundry issue. Maybe she wears her outfits multiple times. To cover all bases, make sure you buy a bottle of the lavender fabric softener at A Place on Earth. Fourth suggestion: hold your nose.

Bird Droppings
S
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
itting on my porch this morning, I was overwhelmed by the richness of sound. We live in an auditory wellspring, filled with bird sounds. Being able to decode and identify those sounds enriches every moment of every day. You say you don’t hear the array I speak of. The truth is your ears pick up the sound. But your brain has been trained to ignore them. You have since birth been putting up filters between you and the rich world of sound. If you are here on vacation, why not try pealing away the filters and treating your senses to the auditory frontier. The first thing you’ll hear are laughing gulls. Their raucous call is as much a part of summer on the Jersey Shore as the sound of surf. If you are an early riser, the loud caroling song coming in through the window is the song of American robin. Mockingbird, another early riser, has a song consisting of a run on series of phrases. The short, hurried song that often ends with a burry or rough note is house finch. The burbles and churps you hear from
high overhead are the calls of purple martin, an aerial vacuum cleaner whose wide mouth snaps up insect prey. The rapid chittering you hear is the call of chimney swift. One of the best ways to gain a tympanic toehold in this world of sound is go on a Cape May Bird Observatory field trip. Leaders are as adept at identifying by song as by sight, pointing out that the song of common yellowthroat is phonetically rendered “whitchadee, whitchadee, whitchadee.” Yellow warblers say “sweet, sweet, sweet, I’m so sweet.”
To hear what you’ve been missing, take a walk through one of Cape May’s convenient natural areas. Examples include the Nature Conservancy preserve on Sunset Boulevard, Higbee Beach and Cape May Point State Park. Music CDs that group and identify bird songs are available at Northwood Center East Lake Drive, Cape May Point. Sit on the benches and drink in the world of sound. You’ll be amazed. For the next few weeks warblers will still be migrating through. Last bird in will be blackpole warbler, whose ascending series of notes barely register on the human scale. The call of cedar waxwing a crested and caramel colored beauty, sounds like a high ethereal sigh and likewise challenges the upper range of human hearing. An easy call is that of American goldfinch whose stuttered utterances, given by birds in flight are often rendered “potato chip.” The bird’s flight is then executed with a dip. So this vacation explore the auditory frontier and challenge yourdelf to come up with your own phonetic renderings.
Let’s Get Running!
RUNCAPE history & nature for the sole
Gentle ocean breezes. Leaping dolphins in the periphery. Horses clip-clopping through a Dickensian town. And guiltfree cocktails. (Never forget the guilt-free cocktails!) There are so many reasons to love running in Cape May. We’ll get you acquainted with all of them — nice and slow — on custom tours of America’s Original Seaside Resort. Run for the nature, run for the history, run for your life. Starts June 4 RunCape.net

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
C
an you laugh along even when the humor is blood-soaked? Got two recommendations. Once you see the 1970s Warner Brothers logo and hear all that funkadelic period music, you can’t help but think you’re going to be in for a wild and very funny, very retro thrill ride in the movie The Nice Guys. Welcome back to the not-so-distant past. The Nice Guys stars Russell Crowe as Jack Healy, your stereotypical tough guy who beats people up for money. He’s an enforcer who is very good at his job. Ryan Gosling plays Holland March, a struggling private detective who is not as good at his job as he is conniving mostly rich old ladies out of their money. At first, Crowe is working a job that calls for him to rough up Gosling — and he is very good at it. For his part, Gosling is searching for a mysterious girl wrapped up in what appears to be small-time porn but is actually a major cover-up in the energy industry. And by the time all this is going down, you are happily along for the ride.
Crowe and Gosling excel in The Nice Guys There is a great supporting cast, but the real standout is not all the bad guys (who are outstanding) but rather Angourie Rice, who plays Gosling’s daughter Holly in the film. This kid is as genuine as a faded pair of bell bottoms. I’m going to go ahead and let that reference speak for itself. This film is LOL funny in an age when LOL had no meaning. It’s one of the best times at the movies you’ll have this sum-
mer if you can put up with a LOT of violence. Gosling (who is not always my favorite) is brilliant, and with Crowe the team works. Two other comedians who have been getting attention are Key and Peele. This comedy sketch duo is hilarious and their Comedy Central features and You Tube videos are off the charts. Their new film is Keanu, about a cute kitten that gets mixed up with LA gangstas! Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele play two average guys who infiltrate the gangs to get back their kitty. The film gets raw as people get flat out thug on one another (spoiler alert: the kitten gets in harm’s way but thankfully never gets hurt). Like The Nice Guys, Keanu will have you laughing for sure but only if you can put up with the ugliness of the crime underworld (where the film pulls no punches). If you’re squeamish about blood, violence and drug use, then pass on this film and visit the Animal Outreach Adoption Center or the county shelter to rescue an adorable cat instead.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
SPIKE is a very loving 5 yr. old male. He is the favorite of all shelter staff and volunteers because he is extremely affectionate and calm. He loves to take leisurely walks with his friends at the shelter. The shelter offers him a blanket in his kennel at night because he looks sad when the day is over and everyone starts to leave. Adopt Today!
ANGEL is a 2 year old tan and white female terrier-lab mix who is a happy and affectionate young girl. She loves to play ball and returns it with a happy grin and a patient “sit” until you throw it again. Angel’s favorite thing is to lean in for petting and sit on your lap. She lived with another dog and loves human companionship. Meet her today!
SAMPSON AND DELILAH are five year old beagles who came in together. Hopefully their ending will be a “happily ever after” rather than their namesakes! These two mellow dogs walk well on leashes and are content to sniff in the yard and be with eachother. Each will claim your lap for petting. Make room in your family and adopt!

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
BESSIE is the picture perfect little lady. Although the shelter accomadations are adequate, Bessie would much prefer a nice quality home. If you are looking for a pretty cat like Bessie, look no further. Come by the shelter today and give this cutie the home of her dreams!
FAT CAT has spent the past year living in the bushes. He learned to get food from a nice family, but was unable to defend himself against other strays stealing his food because he was declawed. Needless to say, he was terrified upon arrival at the shelter and has been struggling to adjust. He would be best in a quiet home. Give him a chance!
BOBBIE is a rough tumble barn buddy. She will take care of any mice or rodents you may want gone. Bobbie also loves riding in cars. She loves cars so much that she had her kittens in a car. If you want an outside female cat, Bobbie would be perfect for you. Come by the shelter and meet this cute little lady today!
