Ramblings From The Editor
I
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
have lived in the US for 18 years, and in Cape May for 14 years, so I’ve grown pretty accustomed to this American life. I know... tough job, getting used to life in Cape May, right? But after all this time, there are still things that take a Scotsman like me aback. For one thing... flags. I’m thinking specifically of the kind emblazoned with a college seal that you’ll see waving on many a Victorian porch here in the summer. That kind of school pride just doesn’t exist back home. We go to college, leave college, get a job and that’s that. There are no college sports teams to follow, no weird fraternity rituals and reunions, no college-branded clothes, banners and bumper stickers. You can always tell the American exchange students on a foreign campus — they’re the only ones who purchase these things from a university bookstore, to the bafflement of local kids, who would never buy, say, a Glasgow University hoodie. Just doesn’t happen. But my surprise isn’t limited to college
flags. Last week was Flag Day in the US, and on the eve of the holiday, the wife and I went for a cocktail at Congress Hall. We saw Old Glory on the lawn there, flying at halfmast after that tragic and incomprehensible Orlando massacre (which a Wildwood High School 2001 graduate survived). Even the 50-foot pole is a work of art, handcrafted out of wood by the only artisan of his kind in the nation. We saw all of the American flags lin-
ing the promenade, too, each lit after dark according to proper flag etiquette. Again, this is not something you’ll see in Scotland, where the St Andrew’s flag (blue with a white diagonal cross), although proudly revered by the Scots, isn’t nearly as ubiquitous, unless you’re watching the national soccer or rugby teams play, in which case they’re everywhere! It got me thinking about all of the care taken on this island to protect and honor the nation’s flag. We have the Sunset Beach flag-lowering ceremonies, which take place nightly on the shore in front of the wreckage formerly known as SS Atlantus, and which honor a different veteran each time. And we have the nightly flag ceremonies hosted by the Kiwanis Club at the Cove Beach pavilion. In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, November of 2012, we interviewed a man named Ed Kloskowski, who ran 120 miles from High Point, NJ to Cape May in five days carrying a three-foot-by-five-foot American flag on an aluminum pole. “Besides turning me from an idiot running, into an idiot running with a purpose, it

Page 14 was a rallying point,” he told us at the Blue Pig Tavern. “It unites us. I thought it would be a good way to get people in surrounding towns to say, ‘Hey, this isn’t just about New Jersey.’ In tough times like this, the flag reminds us that we’re in in together.” That was a reminder I think we all needed this week, when we heard the news from Orlando. So, even though the plethora of flags and flag ceremonies on this island may not be something I’m used to, it is something even a grumpy old Scotsman can appreciate. Speaking of honoring things that are important, the folks at Congress Hall are looking for your help and inspiration as they create a Bicentennial Time Capsule. Help celebrate the old hotel’s 200th anniversary by sharing favorite memories — could be photographs, letters or any memorabilia you think might mean something to whoever is gathered at Congress Hall on Labor Day weekend of 2066. Send your items to Iraisa Reilly, 29 Perry Street, Cape May, or you can stop by the front desk of Congress Hall. I watch too many apocalyptic TV shows to have an entirely upbeat view of how life will be in Cape May in 2066 (not that I expect to be around to see it). Will nutters with nuclear bombs have turned daily life into a Mad Max-style game of survival of the fittest, or will those zombies finally have arrived? Will Ed Mahaney still be mayor? Will Tuesdays still be Terrible at the Ugly Mug? Will there still be someone standing outside the Original Fudge Kitchen, come hail or shine? How much will beach tags cost? Will there be a beach? Or will it all be 10 feet under water? Okay, that wasn’t supposed to go all downbeat. The weather’s beautiful again! The restaurants and bars are open daily! Life is good. Enjoy it while you can. Until next week...

The Old Fogey
Y
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
oung Albert bit someone last week, and it was terrible. Not the biting, you understand: as with 99 per cent of Young Albert’s rages, it was well justified (a visitor had sat on Albert’s bench, the one opposite the minigolf, a sport which fascinates Albert. The bench has a little brass plaque on it, saying, This is Young Albert’s Bench and by Sitting Here You Waive Any and ALL Rights to Legal Action When He Bites You), and his actions (he did indeed bite the person. On the rump, as it happens, when the lady bent over to brush him off her leg, having mistaken him for a rat. In fairness, Albert did skip his weekly bath, and when that happens his coat does take on a glossy sheen) were in no way unreasonable. But really, the FUSS the injured lady made was unconscionable. “Dear Lady!” I opined loudly, “One would think you had never before encountered a Yorkshire Terrier! Simmer down before you embarrass yourself!” Such a loud declaritive statement usually makes people play along, for fear of
looking a fool, but in this case she flew into a rage and was foaming at the mouth such that I was able to quickly have her committed to the infamous Cape May Sanitorium for an indefinite stay. Don’t fuss, dear friends! She will come to no lasting harm there, unless she is of a sufficiently sensitive disposition that daily ice baths and flogging with birch branches can be considered excessive. For my part, I find that a morning plunge and whipping does a chap wonders. And anyways, she will not be lonely: at last count we have some 40-50 sensitive people up there: sensitive in that their being let loose
in the world would offend OUR sensibilities. I care little for their thin skin. Tax collectors, bloggers, people from Wildwood, that kind of thing. But the whole thing made me miss the old days, when dogs were pretty much free to roam, defecate, fornicate and any other “ate” they pleased (why, I laugh every time I remember that time a pack of feral chihuahuas ate that fella from Philly!). Of course, in those days dog food was none of that fancy organic moist fillet-of-endangered-bisoncalf nonsense: it was leftovers and what and whoever they might be able to pull down in the street as a pack. And as a result, the dog poop was a LOT less unplesant to step in on the sidewalk: it was more like one has trod on a walnut. And it was rather powdery and dry, with an aroma that was merely “earthy”. Not like now: now it’s like stepping in a pie. And now people will chase you down the street waving tiny little bags which, unless I am mistaken, one is supposed to somehow put the poop in! I saw a man do it. It was like a horrid fecal glove-puppet show! Enough!

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, spoiling dads
omen already know the joys of the spa. Whether it’s to gain a confidence boost with a beauty treatment, or to enjoy the medical benefits of massage, we’re accustomed to letting someone pamper us. There’s something festive about sitting around and chatting as you wait for chemicals to alter your hair, skin and nails. Men should use Father’s Day as an excuse to find out what they are missing. Historically, grooming hasn’t been pleasant for men. Since a cave man first used a sharpened stone to scrape his face free of hair — perhaps to gain an advantage in hand-to-hand combat — men have had to deal with their beards. Early Egyptians saw smooth skin as a mark of sophistication, and used pumice, razors or tweezers to render themselves bald from head to toe. Not easy. Romans would have a barber in the household, and a ready supply of spider webs soaked in vinegar to staunch the inevitable bleeding. Doesn’t that sound soothing? Victorian-era barbers tried to make shaving
a luxurious experience, complete with warm towels and soothing creams. Unfortunately, many of them had bad breath and dirty tools, so some men preferred to shave themselves. Even Victorian gentlemen generally did their own shaving, with the valet doing the hard work of securing hot water and honing the blades. A daily shave was a luxury before the safety razor was patented in 1901, which means those who eschewed a full beard spent much of their time in that least smoochable of states, the two-day stubble. Very sad.
So, gents, you’ve earned a little glamour. Visit Sea Spa at Congress Hall for a shave, including exfoliation, toning, pre-shave oil, hot towel treatment and moisturizer. Try a facial, or a manicure. Soothe your sandbattered feet with a pedicure. Head to Accent on Beauty for a cut and let them cover your premature grays. Over at Cape May Day Spa, there are Father’s Day specials — spend your kids’ inheritance on a little self-care. Ask for tips on sunscreen and use it. Shaving over a sunburn is no fun, and if you skip shaving on vacation, you’ll need to protect the top of your face to avoid the two-tone look back at work. Now that you’re looking extra handsome, go someplace fancy, like the gala to benefit Cape May Stage on June 26. Visit capemaystage.org for more information. After your treat yourself, go back to being Superdad. Take the kids — and your camera — over to merMade, an upscale spa designed for children ages 3-12. They offer mini-makeovers and make-your-own-spa-product stations. They also have a dress up lounge complete with mermaid tails and glitter tattoos.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My daughter graduates from high school in a few days and her best friend is having a party afterwards, for graduates only. Our concern is the parents of the girl have a history of serving alcohol to kids who come to the house. Their idea of their own kids “having fun” is to see them get trashed and passed out in the back yard. We don’t want to be seen unrealistically strict, but we fear that things will get out of hand. – The Uncool Parents Dear Uncool Au contraire. If enabling is defined as “cool” then embrace your inner parent skills and stand firm. Yes, she can attend the party. She must be home by midnight and if she is not, you (being uncool) should pay a visit to Party Central and look for her to make sure
Wise answers to perplexing questions
she will be coming home in A-Okay condition. The Answer Lady applauds your daughter’s honesty in telling you where she will be instead of avoiding the issue. As a compromise, you might tell her that she is more than welcome to resume the party at your house with a few of her friends. Or, one-up the enablers. A friend of the Answer Lady’s once hired a party boat and took the grads out on the water. Pick up some oven-baked pizzas at Lucky Bones and climb aboard the Tiny Tiki Cruise boat.
Dear Answer Lady My husband is fresh out of the service and until he lands a job, we, including our three-year-old daughter, have been forced to move in with my mother. The problem is we are used to our way of doing things and my mother is insistent that things be done her way. I’m talking about everything from what time we eat dinner to the battle of the wills about what my daughter left on her plate. Shouldn’t my husband and I be the ones who decide these things? – Thwarted Dear Thwarted Sounds like you need to go to Swain’s Ace Hardware to buy a new grill. That way you can cook whatever each of you wants and by making dinner more a picnic milieu, you take the pressure off everyone. The Answer Lady also suggests that five minutes after your husband gets that job, you contact a Cape May realtors and get thee out of her house and into your own as quickly as possible. Remember, she’s still YOUR mother and it is pretty hard to repress those parenting skills. Every parent thinks their way is the right way.

Bird Droppings
T
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
his is an article I never thought I’d write. Its focus is house sparrow. Most birders are disdainful of this introduced weaver finch. First released in Brooklyn, NY in the fall of 1851 this English immigrant is now found throughout the US due largely to its adaptive nature and affinity for habitats modified for our species. More common a century ago when oat-impregnated horse droppings were more common to the urban landscape, house sparrow seems to have survived the reign of the Model T Ford and, today, represents one of the few very successful introduction efforts. My familiarity with the bird stretches back to 1958, when at the age of seven I started birding. The nesting colony in the ivy covering a neighbor’s brick chimney gained my attention. I found them both handsome and fascinating. Males with their black bibs and chestnut eyestripe were far more striking than most native sparrows and their acrobatics eclipsed the best efforts of most
native species — they are adept at f lushing insects from the grass, then snatching them in f light. The birds could execute vertical climbs and even hover — a feat few birds have mastered. Yet few birders bother to glance at house sparrow. People who maintain purple martin and bluebird boxes regard sparrows as nest usurpers. Being a non-native species, house sparrows are not protected by laws governing native species. Me? I side with Charles Darwin — let
the better bird win. Wintering merlins and Cooper’s hawks that eat house sparrows join me in this regard. Purple martins vacate North Amerca in winter so lie beyond the talons of North American raptors. Not so this hardy European transplant whose numbers are even supporting a growing urban population of Cooper’s hawks. Speaking of immigrants. Does it strike you as odd that an avocational block dominated by people of European extraction should be disdainful of a bird sharing a similar immigrant background? Folks, the bird even got its start in Brooklyn, just like your ancestors. The only way this story could be more American in character would be for that initial release of one hundred birds to have occurred on Ellis Island. So here’s to the house sparrow, our neighbor and cultural twin, an immigrant which seems destined to stay as long as we do.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
I
f you’re an Alice in Wonderland purist, stay away from the new Disney film, Alice Through the Looking Glass. I’m not such a purist. This film is getting badly beaten up by critics and audiences alike, and certainly the reproach has merit. However, I’m not going to completely dismiss this sequel to Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland (2010), which was absolutely much better. When is a sequel as good as the original? Well, for that matter what happens when the original (in this case the Burton film) is not as good as previous adaptations or the book itself? So let’s put all those pompous, selfrighteous opinions on a shelf (better still shrink them down like a good Wonderland adventure would), and let’s just watch the movie. In this film, you’ll see all the standard characters from the Lewis Carroll classic. Johnny Depp plays The Mad Hatter, Mia Wasikowska is Alice, Anne Hathaway plays The White Queen, Helena Bonham Carter as The Red Queen, and so on. In fact, all that was missing from the first film was Burton
Alice Through the Looking Glass has its moments directing. The sequel was directed by James Bobin. Alice is again older in this version (she was 19 with the Burton film). In the real world of London in the late 1800s, she has inherited her father’s commercial shipping vessel and goes on ambitious expeditions. What she doesn’t realize until she comes home from one long journey is that her mother has placed the ship in hock (using the family house as col-
lateral) to Alice’s former love interest turned nasty ex, Lord Hamish. Her family home in peril, her shipping company in jeopardy, Alice escapes to Wonderland to visit her old friends. She finds that The Mad Hatter is near death with sadness over the loss of his family, which happened several years earlier. Alice must travel back in time to fix the woes that have taken a toll on the Hatter. She visits the kingdom of Time itself. In this case, Time is personified and played by Sacha Baron Cohen (yes, the guy responsible for the 2006 movie Borat). Does this all sound nothing like the book? Correct. Does it sound kind of lame? Well… admittedly parts of the movie are lame — and sluggish. But Cohen is excellent as Time, and in the end I wasn’t as disappointed as I had been throughout the film. The story is strange (and not always in a cool, funky way) and sometimes unimpressive. But it finished well. All’s well that ends well? One critic growled this was “a sequel we never asked for.” I respect that. But I’m still going to give this film a tweedledee thumbs up.

KYRO REN is a senior Lab mix with a lot of luster left in his life! His favorite thing to do at the shelter is to play fetch in the yard with his beloved tennis ball. He walks very nicely on a leash and does know sit and paw. KyloRen is house broken and politely whines to let you know he has to go outside. Come in to the shelter today and meet this sweetheart!
LEBRON is a young male Pitt Bull, Terrier and Boxer mix. He is just too handsome to be homeless! Lebron is very smart, young fellow who is very food motivated and loves to learn.
