Ramblings From The Editor

S

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

o I guess things got a little interesting in the Cape May mayoral race with the news that recently retired police lieutenant Chuck Lear announced he would be running for office in this November’s election. If you’re wondering why this is interesting, you likely have been hanging out under a rock for the last 15 months. To cut a long story short... Incumbent mayor Ed Mahaney led the charge (let’s be honest and save some space here) to demote Chuck’s former boss, Rob Sheehan, who was chief though he’s still the top-ranking police officer on the force. That demotion happened in March of last year. Mayor Mahaney also led the charge to dishonor Lear’s 37-year service with Cape May Police Department in a comp time issue that is so complicated and so full of intrigue and Game of Thrones-type malevolence and manipulation that I don’t have the time or space to do it justice. Suffice to say, if you DO watch Game of Thrones, it’s similar to Jon Snow challenging

Ramsay Bolton... wait, that happened on Sunday night and what a conclusion THAT was. If Ed Mahaney is Ramsay Bolton and Chuck Lear is Jon Snow, then you’ll be looking forward to the November election, assuming you prefer Lear over Mahaney, which I would any day of the week. If you are wondering what the heck I’m talking about, hey, I’m writing this on Tornado Tuesday. A weird day. One minute I was lying, half asleep, on a bed, with needles

stuck in me, courtesy of the great Chris Curley, acupuncturist extraordinaire, and the next minute, he’s telling me to get off the bed, saying there’s a tornado warning. And shortly after, I’m driving down the Parkway to Cape May in weather that I’ve never seen before. There were lines of cars along the side of the Parkway, but I figured it was safer to keep on driving as opposed to stopping under trees that could topple over. Plus, I was worried about my three mutts left alone in the house, while lightning struck and, as it turned out, trees fell around them. Yep, weird day. Anyway, back to the mayoral race. I don’t know if Mayor Mahaney is running again for office, but I’m guessing he likely will, though I also think he will realize he has a heck of a fight on his hands. Four years ago, Mahaney beat Rusty Chew, another former CMPD officer, by a dozen votes. There’s reason to believe he will have an even tougher battle this time around. In his press release, Lear explained that, “A number of concerned Cape May residents

Page 14 have encouraged me to seek public office. They urged me to present a new and positive message about our community and its future. I approached my law enforcement career with honor and respect for our community, and our citizens viewed my service as marked by professionalism, common sense and proper decorum. Using my experience, knowledge and skills, I will build a new community of teamwork among City employees, residents, visitors and businesses.” Some people may take the view that Lear is taking on Mahaney inspired by vengeance, wreaking revenge for the damage Mahaney has wrought upon the Cape May Police Department. I don’t think that is an irrelevant issue, but I think there is a lot more to Lear’s campaign than that. I think he, as a Cape May lifer, is genuinely pained by what he sees and what he hears about Cape May life. Yes, there ARE positive aspects to the Mahaney reign over Cape May (boy, can he get grants), but I believe that the Napoleonesque bullying mentality and the grip he has on the city far outweigh the positives. I’ve spoken to way too many business owners who have felt threatened by Mayor Mahaney. And that’s not how life should be in America’s Original Seaside Resort. There will be more to say on this subject in coming weeks. And now for some really sad news... cannot believe that Jon Wojciechowski has left us. Jon was a brilliant, enthusiastic, hard-charging managing director of Cape May Stage who brought a great deal of professionalism and excellence to the city’s Broadway-caliber theater company. Jon passed away suddenly last week, after spending barely a half-century on this planet. He was a talented man, a caring and generous man, and he will be missed by many.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

love dogs. But I do not trust them. This thought comes to mind right after watching that fascinating televisual documentary Game of Thrones. That last scene, where those hounds... oh wait, my manservant, Kitchener, is shouting something about “spoilers”. Fair enough: I have no real wish to relive that event, even by describing it. Suffice to say, it’s why House D’Catur has always had Yorkshire Terriers as our dogs: they are, pound for pound, the most deadly and ferocious animals alive, but when confronted by a pack of them, all one needs to do is stay upright, and at least 10 feet from trampolines (that is why trampolines are banned from the mansion) and the worst that can happen is the loss of a few toes. That’s the thing with dogs: they may roll over and beg, but one sign of things going bad, and you’re dinner. Oops, that’s another spoiler, I am being told. Never mind, it’s not really, um, well yes, what actually happened on the show was, the dogs staged a coup and it turned out one of that dreadful Bolton boy’s mastiffs was actually King Robert’s

last heir! So where was I? Ah yes, dogs. The thing is, it’s not the monkeys we need to fear (though there was that time in Cape May when we had an Ape Mayor for a year, due to an an fortunate loophole in the voting process and the fact that he was the best candidate), or even the cats. Cats are evil incarnate, but really, no smarter than your shoe, and so they may eat you if given a chance, but ten seconds later will have forgotten why. Dogs, though: dogs are pack animals and don’t for one second believe that they think we humans are pack members. For a

start, we are not hairy enough (for the most part, anyway: there was that barman the one time in the Brown Room...) and also, we do not sniff each other’s bottoms as greeting. That said, I have been to more than one party in Wildwood where guests are expected to disrobe and ...ah wait, Kitchener is waving his hands in alarm, so I shall save that story for later. So really, dogs are just biding their time, planning and scheming for the day an incautious dog-lover invents an opposable thumb device for them, or a paw-operated can-opener. Especially Doodles - oh, they pretend to be nice and dumb as a bag of hair, but really, they are masterminds bred by human quislings who seek to elevate dogs to Overlords. This is why our plan to interbreed every large dog with smaller dogs must succeed: within a generation, the average mutt size will be 4” at the shoulder, and weigh 1lb. So when the Canine Revolution comes, all we will need is stout breeks and thick-soled stamping shoes!

C

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the genius of Richard Rodgers

omposer Richard Rodgers was born in a summer house while his parents were visiting friends. It was June 28, 1902, the century was fresh and alive and gay and young, and Rodgers was blessed with an ear for music and parents who took him to the theater. His musician mother taught him to play the piano in his own little corner, and by the time he was sixteen going on seventeen, he and Lorenz Hart, a fellow student at Columbia University, were writing songs together. Legend has it that Rodgers despaired of singing for his supper and was about to embark on a career selling underwear when Rodgers and Hart wrote some songs for a fundraiser, the Garrick Gaieties of 1925. The show, including the song, “Manhattan,” provided the once-in-a-blue moon breakthrough they needed. Rodgers and Hart went on to create classics like “On Your Toes” and “Pal Joey.” After Hart’s death, Rodgers partnered with Oscar Hammerstein II. Together, Rodgers and Hammerstein took musical theater to

a new level with Oklahoma! in 1943. Songs and dances in Rodgers and Hammerstein shows served as integral parts of the drama, and tackled dark subjects — murder, bigotry, hypocrisy, Nazis — on Broadway and in Hollywood. With works like Carousel, State Fair, South Pacific, The King and I, Cinderella, Flower Drum Song and The Sound of Music, Rodgers was the first artist to ever earn the elusive EGOT. Only about a dozen people have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony, and even among these, Rodgers stands out — he also boasts a couple of Pulitzers. Rodgers has over a thousand songs to his credit, more

than 80 of which are considered standards, and critics estimate that one of his shows is being performed somewhere in the world every single day, whether early on a beautiful morning or late into an enchanted evening. You can’t say no to seeing the East Lynne Theater Company’s celebration, Rodger’s Romance, a New Jersey Premiere musical revue created and directed by DavidMichael Kenney. Four singers present 24 songs, without microphones, accompanied by music director Charles Gilbert. There’s also a trivia competition, with the winner of the night receiving a gift certificate to a local business. The show plays through July 23, Wednesdays through Saturdays at 8:30pm at First Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes Street. Tickets are not a lot of do-re-mi — $32, $27 for seniors $17 for students and military, and free for kids 12 and under. Visit eastlynnetheater.org for more information. On Friday, June 24, join the happy talk at a special Question and Answer session with the cast after the show. You’ll be whistling a happy tune as you say so long and farewell.

An open letter to all West Cape May residents and taxpayers By now you may have heard that West Cape May has settled its outstanding litigation with Willow Creek Winery. Under recommendations from the Borough attorneys, your West Cape May commissioners have been quiet regarding this litigation to protect the interests of the borough. Based on conversations with many of you in our community, and in light of several misleading statements and misunderstandings on social media and elsewhere, we felt it necessary to provide a statement. Settling these multiple cases was a rational economic decision based on the cost of litigation. Contrary to published quotes, it is not an admission of liability or a “vindication” of anyone in this case, as specified in the settlement agreement. The commission believes it would have prevailed had these cases gone to trial. Unfortunately, the cost of trial (and probable appeal) of these cases would have far exceeded the settlement amount, and the matters would have continued for years. In addition, given the standard terms of the Borough’s insurance coverage, it will pay part of this settlement. Given these circumstances, the commission made the difficult, but prudent, decision to mediate the cases and to settle them for an amount far less than their potential cost, and significantly less than what was demanded. To start, we will distribute our portion of the settlement funds over three years and continue working to minimize any impact on future budgets attributed to this settlement. We commissioners pay property taxes, too, and are committed to this community, continually striving to meet the Borough’s financial demands, needs and challenges, without adding a burden on our fellow taxpayers. We value the rural, agricultural assets in West Cape May and want them to flourish in balance with our small town character for years to come. Respectfully Your Commissioners Pam Kaithern, Carol Sabo and Peter Burke this message was paid for through the use of private funds

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My mother is driving me crazy. She tans very nicely and if she would take the time to go to the beach would look wonderful in a single afternoon or two. Instead, she insists on going to a tanning salon because she says she doesn’t have the time to go to the beach. It’s so unhealthy. And so unnecessary. How do I convince her to tan the way God intended us to tan? — Pale in Cape May Dear Pale This is a perfect opportunity to have a mother-daughter outing. Buy her a seasonal beach tag, which might inspire her to go more. In the meantime, plan an afternoon at Madison Avenue beach near Montreal Beach resort. She can enjoy the beach. She can look out onto the ocean instead of being confined in some

Wise answers to perplexing questions

claustrophobic room. Bonus, the two of you can spend some time together. Order cocktails and lunch at Harry’s. Have a relaxing afternoon and get a tan as a bonus. The Answer Lady agrees with you. Life is too short to spend one minute of it at a salon. Dear Answer Lady I love my wife, but she is a slob. Unless we are having company, there is not an instant I can think of when she has ever seen the need to clean, tidy up or even be aware that things are amiss. I, myself, am not exactly a neat freak,

but our house is a bombshell and I worry that this sets a bad example for our seven-year-old daughter, whose room looks just like the rest of the house. I do my part every chance I get, but when I take an afternoon to clean and then have it all go to hell and a handbag two hours after my wife gets home, it causes tension and fights. It seems silly to fight over housecleaning, but it just seems wrong to live like this. What do I do? — Living in Slob Haven Dear Slob Haven The Answer Lady is a big proponent of feng shui. All the good chi is blocked when disorder and clutter reign. This causes tension and arguments, whether they be about the household mess or other matters. What you need is the services of Gofers. But understand, even when someone from outside comes in, they are there to clean, not to act as a maid service. The onus is still on your family to pick things up and put them back in their place so that someone can clean. Start by making one room in the house a feng shui zone where everything is tidy and the family can begin to sense the good chi flowing in it.

hile leading my Monday morning bird walk at the Nature Conservancy preserve I was brought to wonder, once again: Why birds? What is it about these co-inhabitants of planet earth that we find so appealing? Why would a dozen otherwise well adjusted individuals rise at 7:30am on a perfectly good Monday just to engage birds? Among all the planet’s other denizens, only birds enjoy widespread, universal acclaim among humans. We integrate them into our music and literature. We name our professional sport franchises after them. We have, at times integrated their plumage into our clothing. We have worshiped them, in assorted religions, as gods and emissaries of gods. We have domesticated them and integrated them into our language. They delight our eyes with color and enliven the landscape with their comings and goings. And their vocalizations are the audiofabric of the seasons — the acoustic backdrop of our lives. But more than this, birds endear themselves to us by their mere presence.

Other animals avoid us, flee from us, birds by their proximity flatter us, treat us as the kind, good-natured creatures we believe ourselves to be. They seem to trust us. Before our ancestors climbed down from the trees, we shared the safety of elevated branches with birds. On the ground we were prey to all manners of clawed, fanged and furry things. A host of common enemies further bonded us to our arboreal nest mates. When parrots screeched an alarm, we dropped our fruit and started climbing. Those

naked apes who ignored the warning became lion scat before they could breed. Thus we herald from a genetic line of survivors whose awareness of birds was acute. It is not merely coincidence that birds and humans share much the same visual and auditory range. Our fascination has a visceral as well as an emotional foundation, Speaking of viscera... the gastronomic appeal of birds has long motivated human interest. The first written account of Cape May’s birds focused upon their epicurean value. In 1684, a visiting seaman identified as “Master Evelin,” commented upon the “infinite quantity of bustards [turkey], swans, geese and fowl.” Given Cape May’s strategic good fortune and surfeit of protected natural areas, we may anticipate that our fame as a birdwatching destination will endure and that given the appeal of birds, the ranks of bird watchers are destined to grow as more and more baby boomers retire and begin casting their genetically honed senses in the direction of the natural world — a world filled with birds.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

T

here is an old saying, “Man plans and God laughs.” But when a woman plans, does God laugh? In the new movie Maggie’s Plan, we get a good feel for what it means to meddle with the more organic, natural paths a life can take. At the beginning we hear one of the first of Maggie’s plan to use a former fellow student from college as a sperm donor for the baby she’s frustrated waiting to have. As she is executing on the designs of the first plan, she meets John, a colleague played by Ethan Hawke. John is unhappily married to Georgette (Julianne Moore). They have an affair, and seemingly in an instant John and Maggie are married with a baby. Jarring, yes a little. We enter on year three of the marriage. Maggie is starting to see how John could have been a culprit in the previously failed marriage. She hatches another plan: to get Georgette and John back together (and him out of her own life). Maggie’s Plan is well acted and written. The story may seem contrived and somewhat predictable, but it represents one of Gerwig’s

Hawke and Gerwig in Maggie’s Plan better films so far. Her latest success was Mistress America (2015). There were times when she played in the less successful films like No Strings Attached (2011). Her film, Lola Versus (2012) was badly reviewed, but I still sort of liked it. Seems when she is in the lead role, the film takes on a flavor that works for me. I’ve never felt Gerwig more typecast than in Maggie’s Plan, but somehow it’s not a detraction for me. Like Woody Allen, you can hear

Gerwig’s own voice in her characters. Heck, nowadays Allen doesn’t even need to appear in the film for you to hear his voice — usually channeled in the lead actors of his films. Maybe Gerwig’s voice is fresh enough for me not to be sick of it. Given decades of films into the future if there is no attempt at versatility, I can see where her persona may wear thin. Gerwig is surrounded by more Hollywood royalty than ever in this latest project. Academy Award winner Moore and Oscar nominated Hawke. Saturday Night Live allstars Bill Hader (who was fantastic) and Maya Rudolph. Hader steals the show as the pragmatic and outspoken friend of Maggie, who is less than impressed with many of her plans. He’s not afraid to give Maggie the best advice in no uncertain terms. The films of Gerwig are still left of main stage, they’re certainly not blockbusters. They’re gaining more critical success, featuring more powerful casts — will more prominent offerings follow? Let’s see the organic, natural progress!

EDWIN is senior looking for another senior to share a home with. He is a low maintenance fellow just looking for someone to quietly spend time with. If you appreciate a deal, then come for the senior for senior discount because Edwin would like to retire soon. Will you join him?

PIP was found in a trap left in the rain! She was rummaging through a person’s trash because little Pip was starving. She came into the shelter soaked to the bone squeaking away for some help. That’s how her name came to be “Pip” squeak. She is looking for a warm home with lots of food! Can you be the comfort she is looking for? Adopt today!

JACOB AND RANGER came into the shelter together after a tough life of living outside. They trust eachother, but are slowly learning to trust others. They would love the chance to go to a home and see what the glamorous indoor life is like! Jacob and Ranger are like two peas in a pod and would prefer being adopted together. Two is better than one!
