The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
am not keen on separations (I do not, it must be admitted, like change: even now, I have gas lamps fitted over the new-fangled electric bulbs in the Mansion, and employ a bow-legged London street urchin to light them every evening). And so I view the recent malarkey in Ole Europe with some disapproval. I recall the time we in Cape May seceeded from the Union (over Ulysses Grant’s unpaid bar bill at The Brown Room). Oh, there was jubilation at first, and effigies of Wildwooders were burned in the streets, but then a few householders at The Point declared independence, followed by Uncle Bill’s Pancake House. By the time we quelled the breakaway territories’ rebellions (in blood and fire, of course, and also beer, as the former two can be tiring work), and met to forge a lasting peace, we were standing in knee-deep ash and rubble. Is there a parallel here, I hear you ask, prompted by my wizard-like command of the English language (to name but one: this
column is syndicated in 300 newspapers globally, in some 598 different languages, all typed by me), is he making us reflect, by way of one of his meandering and frankly dubious anecdotes? Is he pointing in his homely way to the errors in fracturing the bonds of civilization, and the rise of the powers of darkness in our England and our own nation? Don’t be preposterous! You jackanapes can think what you want, and it will, as always, be almost entirely the opposite of good sense. But really, I am not one for mob
rule, ever since we burned down the Admiral one night during a rowdy pitchforks-and -flaming-torches riot over the barman not being “one of us”. In truth, he was not “one of us” in the sense that he was a performing bear, and his lack of an opposable thumb was resulting in some peculiar measures being poured, but still, all in all it was a shameful episode. The resulting soul-searching (plus the threat –after we had sobered up and apologized profusely – from the departing 600-lbbear that he would come back and consume us if we every treated anyone like that again) led us to be possibly the most cosmopolitan, open-minded and welcoming city in all of America. With the 90 per cent kidding (and ten per cent not kidding at all) references to Wildwooders. Of course, this has led to Cape May’s average citizen being not just eccentric but start staring mad, as what my granny would have referred to fondly as “dafties” have flocked here from all over the world. But what can one do, except giggle and dribble?

P
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the irresistable beauty of pancakes
ancakes are a wonder. How can moistened flour cooked on a flat surface with a little bit of grease taste so good? But it does taste good, and humans have been eating pancakelike things for at least 5,000 years. That’s a lot of maple syrup, or honey, as the Romans preferred, or rosewater, as the Elizabethans ate them, or caviar, like the Russians. Sweet or savory, warm or cold, there are as many ways to enjoy pancakes as there are names for them: crepes, griddlecakes, flapjacks, hoe cakes, blini, hotcakes, bannocks, tortillas. Pancakes are a worldwide phenomenon that manage to be as American as apple pie. Fourth of July is a pancake extravaganza for my family, as we are blessed with a crowd of visitors. Aunt Maureen presides over the batter, mixing up a vat the night before - something about letting the gluten relax to create the appropriate level of fluffiness. The relatives line up in shifts. Babies and toddlers go first, accompanied by the dog, who stakes out a post under the table. Next up are kids, spreading more syrup on their
pajamas than on their food. Adults follow, and then, last and sleepiest, come the teenagers, dragged from an airbed in the corner by the smell of frying dough. In addition to the pancakes will be berries, pork roll, and hash browns made from leftover summer potatoes. There will be powdered sugar along with the syrup, and maybe Uncle Michael will bring some crumb cake to finish things off. By the time the grateful crowd finishes eating and leaves for the beach, Aunt Maureen is ready for a nap, and Aunt Nancy is starting to plan lunch. It’s the perfect way to start the holiday weekend.
Not everyone is as lucky as I am, but you can find your own perfect pancake breakfast in Cape May. Start your search at the Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast from 7:30 to 11 am on Saturday, July 2 at Cape May Convention Hall. Tickets are $9 for adults and $4 for children five and under. Kiwanis Club members cook, serve the pancakes, greet diners, and clean up. Proceeds benefit the local scholarship fund and community charities. For more information visit www.capemaykiwanis. com or call 609-884- 8888. The kids will want to try Dock Mike’s, or maybe the patriotic pancakes from Uncle Bill’s, topped with blueberries, strawberries, whipped cream. You can head to the Mad Batter in search of their oatmeal pancakes, but you’re likely to be distracted by the many different kinds of benedicts. Similarly, the excellent pancakes at George’s may be overshadowed by the breakfast quesadilla. Go gourmet at the Red Store with their crab, corn, roasted poblano pepper and feta cheese pancakes. Or go ape at Harry’s with their banana bread french toast.
Photographer Kathy Fallon’s gorgeous coffee table book is a love letter to the ocean and the beach. A Coastal Journey is filled with compelling, inspiring photography from Cape May, the Wildwoods and the Outer Banks.

The Wonderful World of «
If it is upscale dining you are in the mood for, you will find it here in West Cape May where you can have a truly memorable dining experience. THE BLACK DUCK RESTAURANT, 1 Sunset Boulevard, is reminiscent of an old Cape May porch, featuring a cool, casual environment. Comfort is the key when describing the menu. This BYOB gourmet bistro features fresh seafood from local waters, honey glazed duck, grilled steaks and sumptuous desserts. GODMOTHERS, 413 S. Broadway, is another BYOB restaurant known for providing a warm, inviting atmosphere and excellent service. The simple philosophy followed here is to utilize the freshest local Jersey produce, the abundant seafood of our shores, combined with the choice cuts of beef, veal chicken and of course, pasta. And, for your convenience, just steps away is SUNSET LIQUORS, 106 Sunset Boulevard, a family owned and operated liquor store specializing in customer service and satisfaction. They provide a large selection of domestic, imported and craft beer as well as wines from around the USA and the world. Check out the cool light fixtures and décor. The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero.us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My daughter has been flirting with a man whom I know is not good for her. This has been going on for over a year. Last week my husband and I came home to find his car outside and the two of them walking out the door. She said they were going out to dinner. I didn’t see her until 11 o’clock the next morning. She is 30, but she is living under my roof. I feel I should threaten to kick her out for this behavior, but my husband disagrees. Should take a stand? I know I’m old fashioned but that’s how I feel. — Mother’s Prerogative Dear Prerogative You can ask her to find other accommodations. It’s your right. What you cannot do is interfere with her choices regarding men. The Answer Lady also advises you to keep
Wise answers to perplexing questions
your opinions to yourself regarding the man in question. Have you never heard of Romeo and Juliet? Your job at this point is to be there when everything crashes and burns. Keeping this in mind, do you really want to ask her to leave? Surely you must know where she will seek “asylum.” The best thing to do is to ignore the whole thing. Instead, spend quality time with her. Start with a Cape May Carriage ride. There’s nothing like an old-fashioned horse and buggy ride to smooth those ruffles. Next a cocktail on the front porch of Aleathea’s Res-
taurant. And hope your daughter sees the light. Dear Answer Lady My husband and I recently married. It is the second marriage for us both. The problem is my husband’s daughter. She is constantly trying to manipulate my husband. Most of the manipulation centers on food. I no longer feel the need to cook as I once did and she is constantly making comments about how her father doesn’t entertain as he did with his late wife, who was apparently quite the gourmet cook and entertainer. First of all, he never liked entertaining. Secondly, we are very happy with our simple lifestyle. Now he is pressuring me to entertain and cook more. How do I put an end to this? – Cooked Out Dear Cooked The answer is simple. Don’t do it. Instead invite the daughter and a few friends out to dinner. Harbor View restaurant is the perfect outlet. You have dinner with a view. You have alcohol. Most importantly, you’ll entertain without the onus of grocery shopping, cooking and cleaning. Your husband’s daughter may still not be happy, but it may take the edge off .

Bird Droppings
S
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
ummer is regarded as off-season by Cape May birders. Come June, spring migration is all but over; fall migration is still a month away. Nevertheless, summer can be filled with surprises. On my Monday morning walk at South Cape May Meadows, our group was treated to at least a dozen killdeer, far more birds than are breeding locally. A female northern harrier made a swing through, and a male wood duck flew by. In June I’ve seen small flocks of wood ducks heading south over Delaware Bay. Male hooded mergansers apparently head north into Canada to change clothes. Mute swans and Canada geese just lounge in South Cape May Meadows. Any scoter that have elected to summer locally must haul out on the beach. Deprived of their outer feather layer, they’d get waterlogged if they attempted to swim. This is just one more reason to keep Fido on a leash when walking the beach. Flightless ducks, like young piping plover and least terns, trigger the predatory instincts of even the best-trained companions.
But enough of that. The subject is summer surprises. Given warming water temperatures and the wandering tendencies of many seabirds, I expect that a frigatebird will turn up at some point this summer. In recent years, brown boobie have become close to annual. My most unexpected summer sighting involved a July 5 encounter with a (European) golden plover foraging in South Cape May Meadows. Except for some worn unmolted coverts, it was in full breeding plumage. Unsubstantiated by a photograph, the sighting
was not accepted by the state’s record committee, so resides in memory only as a tantalizing possibility and a reminder that in Cape May, anything is possible, even during the dull summer months. Of course, “dull” is relative. New birders are thrilled by the everyday summer array. A trip around South Cape May will yield treasured looks at indigo bunting, blue grosbeak, common yellowthroat, orchard oriole and the usual array of breeding wading birds, great and snowy egret are almost guaranteed. Black skimmer are frequently seen loafing on the mud bank of large pond amid the terns and gulls. Glossy ibis are typically seen standing among the Canada geese. But this year, waterfowl (except molting mallards) seem rare. One or more osprey are almost always in the air. If you spot one carrying a fish, an adult bald eagle is almost certain to be in attendance. 7:30am is starting time for Cape May Bird Observatory’s bird walks. Go to birdcapemay. org for details. You bring high expectations. We’ll bring the birds.

The Theater Column
Tom Sims reviews “Rodgers’ Romance” by East Lynne Theater Company
I
t starts with a song that lifts you from headlines and deadlines. Rodgers’ Romance is not just a walk through Richard Rodgers’ brilliant show tune songbook. The new play from East Lynne Theater Company is an intimate, personal journey through a remarkable collection of songs from the legendary composer. Just look at the audience—sweet gasps of familiarity, smiles on nodding heads, giggles, sighs, and voices happily singing along. Charles Gilbert, a composer with a long list of accomplishments, is music director. David-Michael Kenney is the creator and director. And the cast couldn’t be more engaging. Clare O’Malley, Maggie Johnson, Patrick Burr, and Aaron Bell embraced the emotion of the lyrics, the feeling behind the words, and… they embraced us, the audience. The songs were tailored for the personalities of these four as well as the simple, elegant fashion they wore. To call this a concert would be misleading. Each song is told as a tale with delight, love, and passion. The theatrical work of the cast
compares with any dramatic performance as they serenade the audience with remarkable storytelling through song. Can I tell you some of the songs? Well no. I can’t. I’d be helping you cheat. During the evening, you will enter a contest to name songs and their musicals or movies. I can tell you the first song was one of my personal favorites, “Getting to Know You.” If you don’t know that one, you need to get out more often—so see the show twice! The harmonies in that opening were masterful, the best I’ve
ever heard (and I get out very often!). Special thanks for remembering the often overlooked, now forgotten intros to songs. The first songs were individually performed, then the duets started. Chemistry between the performers was palatable. If these four aren’t the best of friends in real life, it would be disappointing. They made you feel as if they were inseparable. At times, this show became very personal for me. These songs are the soundtrack to me and my family’s lives. My father, now nearing 90, has played guitar for the past 60 years. He stills strums many of these songs in the evening—and sometimes with my daughter who loves the tunes. This music has not only entertained the whole world but my entire family. Rodgers’ Romance harkens back to the past, and it’s as new as the sunrise. Delightful. Personal. Timeless. Let this flawless cast and these wonderful songs suspend your life for a couple hours. Face it, you could use the break. The world will be there when you get back.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
REUBEN is a calmer fellow, 8 years old, who enjoys going for long walks. He is pretty relaxed and social and would have no problem living in a house with dogs, kids and even cats! Come and meet Reuben to see if he can be the cherry on top to complete your family.
LEBRON is too handsome to be homeless! He is a very smart young fellow who is very food motivated and loves to learn. Lebron used to live with another dog in his previous home. When asked, he knows how to sit and give paw. This shelter is a very nice place, but there is no place like home, could that forever home be yours?
TUCKER is a beautiful German Shepherd that is over a year old. He was surrendered to the Shelter in mid-February. When he first arrived at the Shelter he was very fearful. After a few weeks of interacting with volunteers he has calmed down and is happy when he sees them! He is big and he is strong! Adopt him today!

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
PENNY has been waiting very patiently here at the shelter for someone to take her to a forever home! She has a bit of a wild side in her and is a mouser at heart. At first, Penny is a little shy but warms up quickly. She would love the chance to grow up in a home, but a barn would be just as nice. Come adopt this cutie pie today!
DOTSON got his name because of the spot on his lip, which looks more like a beauty mark! His previous owner passed away and the family had no choice but to give Dotson up. He is patiently waiting and hoping for another family to play and take care of him. Don’t let this beautiful boy wait any longer. Adopt today!
THATCHER is “shy but sweet”, the famous classic cat quote. He was brought in from a cat colony so was never inside before. Although Thatcher is learning to love the indoors, he misses his cat friends. Thatcher loves other cats! His best friend, Sven is here with him. If you are looking for a sociable, friendly feline, look no longer! Adopt today.
