The Dark Side of Mayor Mahaney Ramblings from the Editor... by Jack Wright
Ed Mahaney was shot by Maciek Nabrdalik in 2013 for a feature story that never ran after the mayor changed his mind about being interviewed.
Y
our typical dictator usually possesses a formidable set of skills. It’s how they rise to power in the first place, unless we’re talking about hereditary dictatorships... like North Korea, for example. It doesn’t seem like Kim Jong-Un possesses a particularly impressive set of skills — he’s obsessed with basketball, but by the looks of him, I don’t reckon he’s much of a player. Kim Jong-Un is also obsessed with power, and maintaining it at all costs. Which reminds me very much of Mayor Ed Mahaney, who has been ruling the roost in Cape May since he was elected in 2008 to
what is supposed to be a ceremonial position. Kind of like the Queen of the United Kingdom. Sounds impressive, but you don’t actually get to order people around. Yet as many who live on this island can attest, Mayor Mahaney DOES order people around. And despite (unlike Kim Jong-Un), possessing a formidable set of skills (he really does know his way around local government and has a sharp brain), he’s fundamentally flawed — as dictators tend to be. I’ve written extensively on these pages about how those flaws have played out over the years — from the couple whose wedding weekend he ruined by trespassing on their
rental property during an argument about the pool on the property to the night he asked a police officer to shut down Carney’s. Both of these incidents illustrate a man who’s intoxicated with power but who also acts way, WAY beyond his remit. My ramblings didn’t prevent Mahaney from being re-elected in 2012 (though the vote was very close), partly because Mahaney usually behaved himself around election time, and the public has a short memory. This time, I believe the mayor may have finally blown it. His mercurial, malevolent dark side — his Mr Hyde — has once again won over Good Guy Ed, who smiles at the
Page 14 people of Cape May and remembers their names (his ability to remember names is truly impressive). Take the events of last Thursday, when he accused a well-known local photographer, Werner Tedesco, of taking pictures of children on the beach. Mahaney was there to present the latest Movies on the Beach, Jaws, which draws a huge crowd every year (and which, curiously enough, features a little dictator of a mayor). Shortly before the movie began, Mahaney called Cape May Police Department to say that a man was taking pictures of children on the beach. That man was Tedesco, who had set himself up on the deck at Convention Hall to shoot the kind of landscape pictures for which he has become locally famous — we sell some of his artwork at our stores. As Tedesco was shooting, Mahaney planted himself on the beach facing him, glaring, his arms folded. “I didn’t know what his problem was, so I mimicked him. I stood with my hands folded, too, and stared back,” Tedesco told me Tuesday. That apparently riled Mahaney, who dispatched his marketing director Laurie Taylor to advise Tedesco that he needed a permit to shoot the beach. Which is total garbage. And Taylor should know better. I’ve met her several times and she seems like a very able marketing professional. But Mahaney has a way of poisoning people who work for the city. After Tedesco told Taylor to leave him alone because the light was fading for his shots, she went back to Mahaney and returned to say they had received complaints that he was photographing children. “I was confused. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing,” said Tedesco. “It’s crazy.” At this point, Tedesco decided to pack up and head for the beach to watch Jaws with his family. Instead, he was accosted by police officers who had been dispatched following a phone call from Mahaney at 8:30. The officers explained they were investigating a report of inappropriate photography. Tedesco was mortified, but he cooperated and showed the officers the images on his camera. When it became clear Tedesco was innocent, he was allowed to go on his way. “I was furious and bewildered. Now, I’m angrier than ever,” said Tedesco, who added that he had been blown away by the level of public support he has received since the incident. Tedesco just happens to be related to Bob Boyd, a former police chief of Cape May and a big critic of Mahaney. Coincidence? Knowing how Mahaney works, I doubt it. I wanted to ask Mahaney how on earth he came to the conclusion that Tedesco was

As business owners and individuals have learned... cross Mayor Mahaney and there are usually consequences. Maciek Nabrdalik taking inappropriate pictures of children? But Mahaney gave me a terse “no comment” when I called him Tuesday. He also wouldn’t comment on the appointment of a new chief of police, which happened early Monday morning. Chances are you know all about the turmoil that has engulfed the department since the demotion of Rob Sheehan in March of last year — a demotion which was engineered by Mahaney, along with City Manager Bruce MacLeod and City Attorney Tony Monzo. I say “engineered” because Sheehan’s removal from his position was nothing other than a witch hunt which has sadly been supported by everyone on city council, with the exception of Shaine Meier, who was also the only council member to vote against the appointment of Sergeant Tony Marino as chief. Sheehan put himself up for the job, and given he once again finished top in the recent chief of police test, and given that the city has still to provide a solid reason as to why he was demoted in the first place, I find it petty and unfortunate that he didn’t get his job back. Not that I was the slightest bit surprised. Mahaney is a vindictive man. Dictators tend to be, right? So there was no way Sheehan was getting his job back while Mahaney is in office. For his part, Sheehan says he still can’t explain why the witch hunt was initiated. As for Tony Marino, several law enforcement sources I spoke to (on the condition of anonymity) said it was highly irregular to
appoint a sergeant as chief — bypassing the positions of lieutenant and captain (the rank which Sheehan now holds). Not that Cape May has a lieutenant, after the retirement of Chuck Lear, who was hounded out of his job after a comp time debacle which I’ve already said plenty about. It was common knowledge that Marino had planned to retire last year — I asked him Tuesday why he had changed his mind. “Prior to my retirement date, the chief test was opened up to sergeants,” he said. “Because of my love of the department, and the fact that I had always aspired to be chief, I decided to give it a shot.” I asked Marino if he had any concerns about inheriting a department that has been riven by turmoil. “I think I can unite the department,” he said. “Part of the cause of the turmoil has been outside influences... social media, rumors.” When asked what he would do if Sheehan won his lawsuit against the city and got his old job back, Marino said, “That would be a court decision and that’s something I would not fight. I’m a law enforcement officer and I respect the decisions of the court.” I also spoke to Bob Taylor on Tuesday. Taylor is the county prosecutor and a man who has been publicly appalled by how the City of Cape May has mishandled its police department. Last May, in the wake of Sheehan’s demotion, he appointed a monitor, Detective Mark Weeks, to supervise the department. When it became apparent that there would be no immediate replacement of Sheehan, the monitor was later stood down. But following Marino’s appointment, Taylor told me that the monitor is “going to resume his work... observing the law enforcement activities in Cape May Police Department.” He added that he would also “looking at other potential issues.” Jon Lee Anderson, an acclaimed writer for The New Yorker, once wrote a piece entitled “Dos and Don’ts for Dictators” in which he had this advice for aspiring dictators: “The devil is in the details. Popular uprisings are often sparked by small incidents that ignite long-suppressed frustrations.” The mayor’s continued mishandling and manipulation of the police department should be more than enough to convince the people of Cape May that he isn’t fit for office, but I wonder if it will be his bizarre behavior and mistreatment of one man that might prove to be his undoing. Mahaney is an unpredictable bully, a vindictive, malevolent little dictator who has no place in City Hall. The people of Cape May should remember that come November 8.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
tire of these lilly-livered Olympics we are forced to endure. The spectacle of taut young lads and lasses in tiny snug costumes never grows dull, I grant you that, but these so-called sports leave me cold. What kind of event is that whereby two people fall into a pond at the same time? Or a snaggletoothed Englishman stands in a rainy field firing a shotgun at saucers? The 100m sprints have some merit, but really, what is 10 seconds’ thrill in a day of theatrical drudgery? Back when Cape May hosted the Olympic Games, the events were exciting: long jump was over a pit of cranky snapping turtles, the cycling velodrome was held in the Wall of Death at Jimmy Chipperfield’s Traveling Circus, and the riders were persuaded to evergreater speed by the trio of homicidal bears chasing them on unicycles. And every track event was on the theme of being chased BY or the chasing OF someone or thing. The howling mob of Wildwooders armed with pitchforks and halitosis was enough to guarantee every finalist in the 100m race came in around nine seconds, for example.
Of course, the podium was not the simple affair it is now. No, the moment the field was whittled down to the three “winners”, swords, tridents and nets were issued and the medalists engaged in gladiatorial combat until only one remained. That martial theme was widespread, too: the synchronised stabbing pool event was always a hit, the javelin was a two-part affair, with medals going to the best throw and the best catch. And the fencing took place on the plank of a pirate ship, with the loser feeding the sharks and the winner having to be fleet of foot to avoid press-ganging.
I would go so far as to say those Olympics were the most entertaining of the modern age, though admittedly a touch messy and with a 90 per cent fatality rate for competitors (and 50/50 for spectators, thanks to the live mortar shell putt). What ended them was the teeny miscalculation in the size of the puregold medals. Rather than being four inches of precious metal, a draftsman’s error (we will not name him: suffice to say that a touch too much single malt can make even the hand of the most fastidious writer shaky, and I will not assign blame) caused every one to measure four feet across. Each looked like someone had gilded a manhole cover, and the cost to Cape May was 30,000 doubloons (in modern money, $4b). That was bad enough, but the final medallists’ parade was aboard the newly commissioned Concrete Ship, which managed to reach the Point before the weight of medallists crowding to the rail tipped the damn thing over in the stormy waters. The medals dragged every man jack down to a watery grave, sad to say.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, goin’ fishin’
ape May is a seafood lover’s paradise. Thanks to the local fishing industry, the fish you buy here is deliciously fresh. You can pick up live crabs at H&H and bring them home to cook your way — nothing but salt. You can get scallops at the Lobster House fish market and grill them to your own specifications. You can pick up Cape May Salts at the Cape May Fish Market and discover why people eat raw oysters. You can go out to eat and let the chef do the work. Sip your wine until that whole fish lands on your plate, cooked so that its skeleton practically falls away at the Pier House, or tempura-ed to perfection, kissing its own tail, at SeaSalt. But sometimes, to misquote Thoreau, when it’s not really fish that you’re after, you want to go fishing. Commercial fishing is big business in Cape May, but there’s still plenty of room for amateurs to drop a line. And once you make peace with the fact that you may come home empty handed, fishing is a lot of fun.
You don’t have to talk when you’re fishing. In fact, sometimes it’s hard to talk, as the noise of the boat engine drowns out conversation. Somehow, the absence of conversation makes it a good bonding activity. You get to just be quiet together, occasionally pointing at something interesting, posing for pictures, calling for a net or hollering, “It’s a keeper!” if you catch a fish that measures up. There’s time to talk when you get home. At Cape May marinas like Utsch’s or South Jersey, you can find several boats with experienced captains to take your group on a four-hour fishing tour. (Once
you’ve had some experience, you can try the six or eight hour trips.) Most offer free instructions and bait. Some have cold drinks and snacks for sale, but most require that you bring your own lunch. Depending on the size of the boat and the size of your group, you may not have the boat to yourself. Be aware that beer is required fishing gear for some people, even if the boat leaves at 8am. This is probably not a problem on a large boat, but consider whether you and your two preteens want to inadvertently join in on a fraternity reunion. Wear sunscreen, clothes that match the weather, and shoes that can get wet. Fishing can get pretty gross, and there are pointy things swinging around, so you don’t want to be barefoot. Wear the lifejacket. Ask about bathrooms. Tickets are usually under $50 for adults and around $30 for children. Equipment rental is extra, tips are expected, and there’s apparently a charge for filleting the fish, should you have more luck than I did. Next week: Bang your Drum

Check out the Exit Zero
After a stubborn blue-collar carpenter turned down a famed Philadelphia publisher’s offer in the 1940s, his story of a shipwrecked sailor in Cape May lay forgetten in a closet for six decades before being brought to Exit Zero. THE CAPE tells the riveting tale of John McJack and the Lenni-Lenape indians of the Cape.
A beautifully illustrated children’s book that doubles as a perfect bluffer’s guide to the history of Cape May. IN THE LAND OF EXIT ZERO contains two dozen gorgeous images of the city’s most beloved landmarks, painted by Cape May-born artist Janelle DiLizio. Exit Zero’s Historical Editor Ben Miller provides commentary.
The illustrated history book so good that the Philadelphia Inquirer named it one of the 12 most beautiful coffee table books, THE FIRST RESORT is the book about Cape May that you definitely need to own.
This charming book, featuring illustrations of New Jersey’s lighthouses by renowned artist, Donna Elias, answers questions that many children ask: What IS a lighthouse? And why should we care? TO THE LIGHTHOUSE! is an essential keepsake for any child who is fascinated by the seas & those majestic sentinels that watch over them.

Photographer Kathy Fallon travels through some of America’s most beautiful beach territories — from Cape May County to the Outer Banks — and expertly trains her camera on the myriad scenes, shapes, lines & textures. A COASTAL JOURNEY is a treasure for anyone who loves the shore.
Just a few decades ago, Cape May was left battered by hurricanes and fires — a shadow of its former Victorian glory. A CAPE MAY STORY celebrates the 50-year evolution that helped shape the iconic seaside town, along with the family hotel, the Montreal Beach Resort, that was there for it all.
Want to know where to Eat, Shop, Stay & Play in Cool Cape May? This is the book you need for your coffee table or night stand. An unmissable concoction of advice and information, COOL CAPE MAY is the ultimate Cape May travel guide.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My family has rented the same house in Cape May every summer for over 20 years. My parents, my brother, his family and mine spend two weeks and hope that our children will continue the tradition. Problem is the house changed ownership and my sister-inlaw has had disagreements with the owners about amenities and other issues. I feel it was not her place to step in — my parents pay for the house. We contribute the food and pay for other expenses. Now it appears the new owners are not all that anxious to rent the house to us next summer. What do we do? — Shut Out Dear Shut Out Your sister-in-law should have stayed out. On the other hand, the house must be quite attractive and easily rentable for the

new owners to just throw away a good tenant so easily. An olive branch should be extended, but be prepared for retribution in the form of higher rent and fewers of those amenities, otherwise known as an aggravation fee. Perhaps it is time to enlist the services of a good realtor — we have so many reputable realtors. Browse these pages and take your pick. The realtor is a buffer between the two parties and would quickly put a lid on any buttinskis. Look forward. The tradition you covet is in the gathering, and the memories you make — not
in any particular house. Dear Answer Lady I recently had an operation and was still not able to maneuver in the kitchen this past weekend. My sister said she would take care of dinner Sunday, so we sat waiting for dinner, to no avail. At 6 o’clock she called to say tearfully that she wouldn’t be able to bring dinner because “something came up.” This isn’t the first time she has done something like this and always gets away with it. There is no winning because she will make up some tale of woe in which she is the victim and I am an ogre for being so unsympathetic. What do you think, Answer Lady? Should I confront her? — Lady in Waiting Dear Lady And you want to waste your healing energy, why? Your sister is who she is. You can’t change her. Instead, embrace takeout. George’s has excellent offerings that are healthy and delicious. Delaney’s and the Cape May Fish Market have some great, affordable dishes that will stave off hunger and won’t break the bank.

Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

here we were, in CMBO’s Northwood Center, counting up our loot — the 18 or so bird species my two beginning birders and I accrued on the outdoor session of my Break into Birding Course. Eighteen species in an hour on a hot afternoon in late summer. Not bad. Suddenly our review of the checklist was overwhelmed by the arrival of 20 exuberant teen birders. While it is true that the ranks of birders are swelling as retiring baby boomers seek outdoor activities that are gratifying but easy on the knees, teens have been flocking to the activity for decades. Why is birdwatching so addictive to young and old? Think of it as a lifelong treasure hunt. A game of chance in which Ma Nature deals a new hand every day and it is precisely your accumulated skill that gives you an edge. When I was a teen, I couldn’t get enough time outdoors. Part of the young birder’s exuberance was the fact that they were in Cape May, the Mecca of Bird Watching. Part of it was rooted in their recent discovery of a roseate
tern — a rare migrant that must have been a “life bird” for most of them. Roseate is not an easy identification. I couldn’t help comparing the skill levels of the young birders (birders for around three years) to my two adult students who had been birding less than three hours. But in those three hours they had discovered that their biggest challenge was not identifying birds, it was finding them. After a lifetime of tuning out sound and motion, suddenly they were thrown into a situa-

tion where they had to reboot their brains and take heed of environmental hints and clues our human ancestors had honed before climbing down from the branches of trees. The take home of this column is that, experienced or not, you are hotwired to watch birds. You are on vacation or retired and Cape May is jam-packed with birds. And you have the rest of your life to see how many species you can find. Yes, the young birders have the edge (young eyes, ears that have not lost their higher registry). But you have the wisdom of years, free time — and you are in Cape May. Bird on! See great things. On last Monday’s South Cape May Meadows walk we saw 56 species in two hours. That’s about average for this time of year. Come September we’ll be topping out at 70 species. By September you’ll be an old hand at locating and identifying birds. No, one of those 56 species was not a roseate tern. But we saw four other tern species. And there’s always next week.

The Movie Column

t’s hard to believe that it’s been nearly a decade since Matt Damon’s last performance as Jason Bourne, in which the character’s true origins were (partially) revealed. After 10 years of lurking in the shadows and searching for more answers, Bourne stumbles upon new information disturbing enough to bring him back. The filmmakers clearly didn’t underrepresent the lengthy time gap since Ultimatum (2007). The secondary plot of the film revolves largely around the constant imbalance of security and privacy in the technology-driven world, an issue that has risen to become arguably the most scrutinized and debated issue of the past decade since Bourne’s last film appearance. Of course, Bourne hasn’t lost any of his edge since then, and to the dismay of the shadowy powers that be, he proves time and time again that he can outwit, outrun or “outbeat” the living hell out of anyone confident enough or stupid enough to try and take him down. This series has been a favorite of mine for a long time, and it just
The anti-heroes in Suicide Squad got better. Next, Suicide Squad. A powerful, mysterious enemy is threatening the lives of millions. The government has a plan: assemble a secret team of dangerous supervillains already in prison. “If they get caught,” organizers say, “we throw them under the bus. If they try to escape, they die.” The villains, headed up by Deadshot (Will Smith) and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), are called Task Force X and begin their work. Mean-
while the most sinister villain of all, The Joker (Jared Leto), launches a massive attack of his own. A movie that injects some upbeat fun vibes into the DC cinematic universe? While simultaneously generating sympathy for seemingly psychotic supervillains and humanizing them way more than I think anyone expected? And to top it off, completely blindsided me by somehow ending up being the better Ghostbusters movie of the summer than the one actually bearing that actual title? What’s not to like? Well to be honest it bugs me that there wasn’t more screen time for the Joker. Not too much more, but just enough see how he would respond to the tremendously powerful threats facing his world. I really wanted to hear what it sounds like when the Joker laughs... out of fear. We always welcome the input from film society members, especially those who have been through our film camp! CINDY was in a home for eight years with a family that loved and cared for her. She got treats, hugs and nice long walks. But everyone grew older, the kids had kids and moved away. Cindy is a a bit older now and has a little less pep in her step. Give this old lady another chance to live out her golden years in a nice home and adopt today!
CIROC is a Pit/Terrier mix female that is back at the shelter because her previous owners fell on some hard times. She is a playful pup that enjoys a big yard to frolic and run around. Give Ciroc another chance and adopt her today. Hopefully the third times a charm!
TIMON is an American Bulldog and Boxer mix with a mug that will melt hearts. Although he has a few things to learn, given the chance he will make a great companion. Come in today and meet this mean-muggin’ cutie pie! Hakuna Matata!

PIP was found in a trap left in the rain! She was rummaging through a person’s trash because little Pip was starving. She came into the shelter soaked to the bone squeaking away for some help. That’s how her name came to be “Pip” squeak. She is looking for a warm home with lots of food! Can you be the comfort she is looking for? Adopt today!
PENNY has been waiting very patiently here at the shelter for someone to take her to a forever home! She has a bit of a wild side in her and is a mouser at heart. At first, Penny is a little shy but tends to warms up quickly. She would love the chance to grow up in a home, but a barn would be just as nice. Come adopt this cutie pie today!
CRUSH has been dubbed the “Friendliest Cat at the Shelter!” He has it all! Looks, size and personality. He loves other cats and has many cats friends here at the shelter. He needs a home. Someone to love him. He acts “dog like” at times. Because he is a carrier of the FIV virus, which many cats have and isnt a death sentence, Crush is only eight dollars!
