Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

ood chess players are always one step ahead. Just when you think you’ve got them, they come from out of left field and... wham! You’re screwed. I thought of chess this week when I heard a story from three different sources that made my guts churn/blood boil/ heart skip a beat... you get the idea.

The story I heard was that Ed Mahaney (who may not be a good chess player but plots like one), realizing that he probably won’t beat Chuck Lear in November’s mayoral election, won’t be running for office. Instead, he will lurk in the shadows, like Polonius in Hamlet (hey, I like to throw in the odd Shakespearean reference) and then, when Bruce MacLeod retires as City Manager (which he told me he was planning on doing by the end of the year), Mahaney will put his name forward and hope that city council votes him in.

Given that Mahaney has had his way with city council for the last eight years, you can see why he might think this is a pretty solid idea. Although Bea Pessagno and Roger Furlin both went out of their way to say they

were independent people who would stand up to the mayor... ah, I have to say with great disappointment and much frustration that this doesn’t seem to have happened at all. They voted last week to make Tony Marino police chief of Cape May, a decision I think was shortsighted (there’s an excellent chance that the man he replaced, Rob Sheehan, will get his old job back either via a lawsuit or a change of city council) and just wrong (Marino was a sergeant who put in for his retirement last year because he hadn’t been promoted — making a

chief out of someone who was ready to quit in a huff after 25 years on the force seems like a less than inspiring leadership choice).

So, yes, right now I would say there is a good chance that Pessagno and Furlin would vote for Mahaney as City Manager. Outgoing council member Terri Swain (who told me she will definitely not be running) will remain on council through the end of the year. And I think it’s also very likely she would vote for Mahaney.

So, IF this story is true, that Mahaney really is plotting an audacious move to be City Manager, I want to say this... such a vote would, I believe, result in a kind of civil unrest even uglier than the blowback that greeted the demotion of Rob Sheehan in March of last year.

And it would also likely cost the city a good bit of money in compensation since there’s a good chance that the new council would reverse the move at their first meeting in 2017, especially if Tricia Hendricks joins the council, with Lear as mayor. Along with councilman Shaine Meier, that would be a

But Hendricks is not a shoo-in. Not any more. Not after Zack Mullock threw his hat in the ring. When I called Mullock on Tuesday to discuss his campaign, he hadn’t officially announced the news. Well, he has now.

When I first heard the news, I was skeptical and worried. I had witnessed Mullock repeatedly coming to the defense of Mahaney during some heated debates over the Sheehan affair on the Cool Cape May Facebook page.

So I was wondering if his candidacy was yet another clever, manipulative move from the mayor... Mullock, if he beat Hendricks, would replace Swain as a reliable vote on council and, hey presto, Mahaney might after all become the new City Manager of Cape May. After chatting with Mullock, I feel much more optimistic about his entry into the race.

Granted, I also felt fairly optimistic about the additions of Pessagno and Furlin to city council and look where that landed us... but a boy has to remain hopeful.

I asked Mullock if he had talked with Mahaney before deciding to run. He said he hadn’t, but HAD spoken with Mahaney since.

“I’m not going to go sit on council to say yes... I don’t have the time to waste on that. If the mayor wanted a yes man, I don’t think he’d be picking a 31-year-old business person,” said Mullock.

I will have more to say about Mullock, Hendricks and Lear in later issues. But for

now, I would like to make a plea to my old pal Mahaney... it would be a hell of a move, Ed. But don’t even try it. If you love Cape May, you should know by now that it will be a better, more peaceful place with you off council.

Use your considerable skills by sticking to the planning board and let some new blood take the reins on city council.

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

ummer is almost over, and I smell the change on the fetid breeze: a heady mix of weariness, avarice, anticipation and fear. Because, dear visitor, the moment the last of you departs, this whole city pauses, like a stuttering old VHS tape, then freezes. The saltwater taffy machines grind to a halt, the pancakes at Uncle Bill’s land with a sizzle and move no more, and even the seagulls cease their murderous assaults on anything edible and fold their wings in patient rows on the beach.

Because, dear hearts, Cape May is the world’s only animatronic beach resort! Did you not think your servers impossibly handsome/beautiful? The lifeguards implausibly muscled and tanned? The passersby just a little too quaint and old-wordly? The capering “local characters” not a wee bit overly practiced? This whole city is a wind-up marvel, and come the end of Labor Day, the mechanism is allowed to whirr to a halt and all of the thousands of moving parts around the city slide to a halt, to be covered with tarpaulins until next spring. Those mechanicals with

quirks/faults (such as that one-time barman who bore an uncanny resemblance to Victor Mature, and who would make every guest at The Admiral Hotel drink an Old Fashioned on the hour every hour whether they wanted to or not, or that robust chef whose Cape May Surprise Pies were the talk of the Jersey Shore, until the link was made between the weekly gross baked and the precise number of missing Shoebies. That particular rogue robot was not scrapped, as his pies were remarkable, but his punchcard was adapted so that he made only vegetarian dishes from then on. Mind

you, we should have been more precise in the difference between a dish FOR and MADE WITH vegetarians, but that is a story for another day, and really, anyway, who missed a few dozen of those bores?) are taken away for repairs/making into amusing metal and plastic paperweights. Not all go willingly, though.

There are, of course, some actual humans in the proceess: about a dozen, though I have had my suspicions of late that the Machines are actually planning to change that, for reasons of efficiency. Only last week I was chatting to a fellow whose job is to program minor tics and bad habits into robots so as not to seem too perfect, and damned if he didn’t start stuttering like a madman. I struck him across the face with my leather glove to assist his focus, but blow me down if he didn’t start spewing magnetic tape out of his mouth! I have a plan, though, to unseat this worldthreatening robot conspiracy with old-fashioned lead and steel, as soon as I have rested: I feel a tad fatigued and must lie down for a moment. Moment. Momen. Mome. Mom. Mo. M ...M...M...M....M

umans are hardwired to respond to drums. You can try to resist that feeling in your chest, when your heartbeat connects to the drumbeat, but your body is urging you to dance, or clap, or at least nod your head along.

Even tiny children respond to rhythm. If you’re lucky enough to have a toddler handy, you already know this. If you don’t, borrow one, and give her a wooden spoon and a pot.

Voila! Instant, and likely prolonged, drumming. (Don’t use a metal spoon, lest you suffer instant, and definitely prolonged, headache.) By the time said toddler is two and a half, she will recognize and repeat rhythmic patterns, and correct you if you skip a beat.

Drums were among mankind’s earliest instruments. They motivated warriors, sent messages, and enhanced religious ceremonies. Early drums were formed by stretching an animal skin over a hole in the ground, a hollow tree or an empty gourd. Archaeologists found drums dating to 5500bc in China, and the people who lived in North America in 3000bc left traces of drums behind. Accord-

ing to Black Elk, a Sioux holy man, drums are used in sacred rituals because they call to mind the voice of the Great Spirit. The round drum represents the “whole universe, and its steady strong beat is the pulse.” Experts say rhythmic drumming induces a deep sense of relaxation, reducing stress, and lowering blood pressure. It fosters a feeling of connection. Drumming “interrupts the chaos” of Tourette’s Syndrome, according to neurologist Oliver Sacks, and has been proven helpful in treating anxiety and boosting mood.

Drum circles are a traditional way to tap into that mood-boosting power. The circle provides a way for a community — even the

kind of temporary community we form on vacation — to connect with nature and with each other. Congress Hall’s Full Moon Drum Circle invites participants to bring their own drum, or borrow one, as they join in a “tide raising, summer celebrating community event.” People of all ages gather on the lawn to make some noise. What follows is a freeform party to watch daylight fade and the moon rise. People come in beach clothes or dinner attire. Some take the drum theme as a mere suggestion, bringing along rain sticks, cymbals, bells, and any other thing that can be banged or clanged. Clapping hands work just fine, too. Spontaneous dances erupt.

Connections are made. Moods are definitely boosted. Sadly, there are only two full moons, and therefore, two drum circles each summer, so you’ll have to wait until next year to join in.

In the meantime, Cape May has other drums to keep the beat. At Elaine’s on Thursdays, you can find Bill Bittman’s steel drums providing the sounds of summer on the porch.

However, you might want to actually call your motherin-law and ask her if she really wanted you to make the dish and perhaps offer an alternative like a side dish from West Side Market or Gaiss’ Market’s stellar, home-made cheese brats which can be thrown on the barbie and ready to eat in minutes. The gesture also makes it clear you have no Betty Crocker agenda.

Lynn Martenstein reviews “Barefoot in the Park” at Cape May Stage

he show began even before the lights dimmed as “Sugar Shack,” “My Boyfriend’s Back” and other hits from the early 1960s had early arrivals at Cape May Stage’s Barefoot in the Park tapping their toes and thumping their Showbills against their thighs. It set the stage perfectly for a spin down memory lane and back.

Written by Neil Simon, one of America’s most successful playwrights, Barefoot in the Park opened to rave reviews on Broadway a month before Lee Harvey Oswald gunned down President John F. Kennedy in Dallas.

Four years later, the play was made into a movie, starring Robert Redford and Jane Fonda.

Not being easy-going enough to “run barefoot in the park” is the charge freespirited Corie hurls at her buttoned-up husband of less than a week, Paul Bratter, as the couple has their first squabble. Not only are they setting up a home together for the first time, they are also dealing with her mother’s empty nest syndrome and his new job as a lawyer. They must also climb the five flights

of steps (six, if you count the front stoop) to reach their top-floor New York apartment.

Holly Williams plays the young-and-inlove Corie energetically and convincingly.

She is thrilled with her new husband; her new title, Mrs Paul Bratter; and her immediate mission in life of decorating their new one-room walkup. Stephen James Anthony plays her conservative husband with wit and charm, and the appropriate measure of restraint... until he breaks free of his reserve.

Paralleling the newlyweds’ tale is a second romance pairing polar opposites. This

time, it involves Corie’s very proper mother, Mrs Banks, masterfully played by Marlena Lustik and the Bratters’ squatter neighbor in the attic, the eccentric Victor Velasco, played with gusto by Roy Steinberg.

While the play captures the show’s ’60s roots, from the Princess phone and studiosized stove and refrigerator to Mrs Banks’ pillbox hat with a decorative pin and Paul’s brown tweed jacket and vest, the play seems fresh and just as modern to 2016 sensibilities as it was to audiences half a century ago.

Anyone who has ever experienced the pushand-pull of newlywed relationships, laterin-life second (or third) unions, or motherand-daughter ties will recognize themselves in this play, and will probably laugh when they see their respective roles played out in front of them.

Barefoot in the Park runs Tuesday-Sunday nights through September 9. Tickets are only $38 for adults, $33 for seniors, and $18 tickets are available for students and active-duty.

The Movie Column

O

ver the next couple weeks, Cape May Film Festival will present two very special movies. We hope you can join us! Fifty million Americans — one in four children — don’t know where their next meal is coming from.

A Place at the Table tells the powerful stories of three such Americans, who maintain their dignity even as they struggle just to eat. In a riveting journey that will change forever how you think about the hungry, this film shows how the issue could be solved forever, once the American public decides — as they have in the past — that ending hunger is in the best interests of us all.

See A Place at the Table this Saturday, August 27 at the Episcopal Church of the Advent, 612 Franklin Street, Cape May, at 7:15pm. Come earlier and enjoy the church’s August dinner before the screening. The menu will be pulled pork barbeque, smoky baked beans, Asian coleslaw, rolls, coffee, iced tea and dessert. A vegetarian entrée will also be served. Table service begins at 4:30pm and continues until 7:00pm. The cost for the meal

Twelve Years A Slave shows September 17 is $13 at the door ($6 for children). If you purchase your tickets in advance, the price is $11.

The cost of attending the screening, in addition to the cost of the dinner, is a donation to the Cape May Community Food Closet. Your donation may be a non-perishable food item or a cash donation in any amount.

For the second film, we partner with Cape May Forum on Saturday, September 17 at 7pm at the West Cape May Borough Hall to present the movie, Twelve Years A Slave.

This event is free and open to the public. This film won the 2014 Oscar for Best Picture as well as for Best Supporting Actress (Lupita Nyomg’o) and Best Screenplay (John Ridley).

In the years before the Civil War, Solomon Northup (Chiwetel Ejiofor), a free black man from upstate New York, is kidnapped and sold into slavery in the South. Subjected to the cruelty of one malevolent owner (Michael Fassbender), he also finds unexpected kindness from another, as he struggles continually to survive and maintain some of his dignity. Then in the twelfth year of his traumatic ordeal, a chance meeting with an abolitionist from Canada changes Solomon’s life forever.

As an introduction to the film, the Center for Community Arts will bring the subject of the movie closer to home, right here in Cape May. In the years before the Civil War no person of color, even if born free, was safe from kidnapping for slavery. And it happened here in Cape May! No reservations needed — please join us.
