Ramblings From The Editor
I
Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
t may be that the hateful, often shambolic, and embarrassing (for America), charade that is our presidential election campaign has impacted more than just the national psyche. I’ve spoken with quite a few local business owners in the last week who’ve told me they think that Clinton-versus Trump has affected the tourism market this summer. To be fair, though, this might not be a one-off. One business owner who carefully tracks sales records told me he had noticed the same dropoff in previous election years — 2004, 2008 and 2012. Each time, he said, the following summer was a great one. There’s no doubt that this summer has been off. You can see it from the parking spaces on Beach Avenue and from the beaches that aren’t as packed as usual. I’m told that beach tag sales are down in quite a few Jersey Shore towns. (If I can get anyone at City Hall to return a call, I will try and follow this up.) And I can tell you that our retail and restaurant businesses are down, too. Was chatting with a friend of mine on
Americans feel good after the November election (as difficult as that is to imagine) because we need happy, free-spending visitors who aren’t worried their nation isn’t about to implode. Speaking of hateful, a couple people asked me recently why I hate Mayor Ed Mahaney. I’ll tell you what I told them... I don’t hate the mayor one bit. I don’t even dislike him. I honestly don’t regard him that way at all — we’ve always said hello to each other in the past, and I imagine we will again (right, Ed?... hello, is anyone there?). What I DO hate is the way he has bullied local business owners over the years. More than most people, I get to hear these stories because of the position I’m in. And although one of my favorite city stalwarts said I was bullying the mayor, I don’t agree... by attacking him, I’m standing up for the many who have suffered at his hands. And if you didn’t smile when you read my comments about North Korea’s Kim Jong-un and last week’s Darth Vader caption under a picture of the mayor... then you just
³ her lovely porch the other night and she was telling me her retail numbers are way down. She thought this might also be down to the fact that there apparently hasn’t been a cloudy day since July 4. That kind of weather is horrible for retail. I sense that the very wet spring made visitors even more eager for the sun this year — seems that more people were hanging around on the beaches later than usual. For whatever reason (and we’re all experts after the fact, right?), let’s hope that

Page 14 don’t know me very well. Since its inception, Exit Zero has leaned very heavily on humor, as do I in everyday life (at least *I* think I’m funny). So, guys, take a chill pill. One more thing I have to say about Mahaney... he’s definitely running for mayor again and will NOT be trying his hand at City Manager. So it looks like much of the column I wrote last week was just inaccurate — hey, you can’t win them all. That’s enough politics... not gonna say anything about the fact that the city is suing contractors over the construction of Convention Hall, an issue I reported on extensively in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. All I will add is that I look forward to a year when the words ‘lawsuit’ and ‘Cape May’ DON’T frequently appear in the same sentence. Every year I refuse to acknowledge the last day of summer as Labor Day. Most of us know that fall does not begin in the northern hemisphere until September 22. Why tourist towns don’t make more of a fuss of this in marketing materials I have no idea. September is a month that almost always delivers pristine blue skies and temperatures in the high 70s and low 80s — in other words, bliss. (In Scotland, we would call this a heatwave to remember). And of

course we get to enjoy our favorite restaurants without a wait. September, you rock my world. Last Thursday I finally got around to experiencing a Congress Hall Bicentennial Dinner in the hotel ballroom. Wish I had gone much sooner so I could have told you what a fun, hokey (in the best pos-
³
sible way) night it was. Led by hotel owner Curtis Bashaw, staff performed musical skits that demonstrated what a ridiculous amount of showbiz talent there is in that company. Kudos to Iraisa Ann Reilly for the script. The good news is the show will return late fall. I’ll remind you then to see it. Enjoy this beautiful month.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
have consulted Ye Olde D’Catur Almamac and some of this city’s wisest souls (myself, Young Albert and Larry Hoo at the drycleaners) and it seems summer will continue until December. Or November. Or possibly October, with a margin of error that takes in the start of September. Either way, though, the temperature looks set to stay above 90 for a good while. Obviously most of you fine upstanding visitors plan to depart this city, so I have authorized the local police to set up blockades and checkpoints to quietly prevent people from leaving too soon. No one should be alarmed: this isn’t different from the time we extended Christmas Day for six months to provide a boost to local retailers, or made daylight officially 24 hours a day to keep the place feeling more cheery and summery. Admittedly that was a minor failure because we clearly could not have streetlights on (it would have been an admission of deception), but people kept driving into the ocean. Anyways, the beaches will be kept open,
the saltwater taffy machines at full pelt and Uncle Bill has been ordered to flip pancakes day and night. We expect visitors to do their part and continue to pay for hotels and eat excessively until told otherwise. Also, the trees have been forbidden from shedding leaves and birds from leaving. Needless to say the legion of cheerless Eastern Europeans who keep this city running along with grim efficiency have had their passports confiscated and been told to push people into the ocean and then rescue them regularly. We are not being entirely unreasonable
here: food parcels and money orders will be allowed in, and optimistic postcards out, so long as they declare this endless summer to be just the best thing ever to happen to them. And if it happens that summer segues neatly into Christmas and you lovely people find yourselves involuntarily booked into Congress Hall for a splendid and not inexpensive dinner then really you need to make the best of it and not complain: for those of you who impress, there will be citizenships to be awarded. And as an added incentive let it be known that anyone displaying less than the requisite enthusiasm will be viewed with a jaundiced eye and introduced to Cape May’s master butcher, Wally Herbert, who is the maker of our famed Cape Pies, of which the slogan “You’ll never guess the secret ingredient! If you know what’s good for you anyway!” is famously associated. After all, we are always on the hunt for extra helpers/fresh ingredients. So, dear hearts, buckle in and enjoy the weather. You have been warned.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, learning to ride
iding a bike is one of the joys of life. From its invention, the bicycle has brought fun and freedom to its riders. This simple machine was an early tool of feminism, providing women with mobility and nudging society to-ward practical clothing. By 1900, it was an affordable tool of the working class. In Cape May, a bike is essential, allowing children on vacation to explore. Adults get to forget about parking and traffic. With a backpack and a basket, you can even get your grocery shopping done on a bike. If you don’t know how to ride a bike, it’s time to learn. Forget the excuses. Odds are, you aren’t too old, fat, weak or whatever to learn. Of course, it would have been easier as a child, but we don’t have a time machine. What we do have is an internet full of videos of adults learning to ride, and many of them look middle aged or older. Watch a few, and choose one to mimic. With patience and a positive attitude, you can do this.
Look around you. Beautiful as Cape May’s human tapestry is, you won’t have to look far to find someone who is not a paragon of fitness. And yet 94% of us can ride a bike. If we can do it, you can do it. Pick a relatively flat, obstacle free space to practice — some people recommend learning on grass, but I think pavement is easier. Wear a helmet, comfortable clothes, and sneakers. Rent or borrow a bike that’s a little too small for you, so that you can put both feet flat on the ground. Stand over the bike. Walk the bike a little while look-
ing ahead at a fixed point. Get comfortable, and then start to scoot along, picking up both feet for a few seconds at a time, until you learn to balance. Put your feet down whenever you wobble. Scoot, and then balance, over and over. Once you feel comfortable doing this, scoot with one foot, leaving the other on the pedal, as if you were actually riding a scooter. Go home. Try again tomorrow. On lesson two, scoot and start pedaling a little. When you pick up speed, stop and put your feet down. Do this about 10 more times. On the eleventh, stop with the brakes. You are probably riding by now. The next time, you can pick up where you left off, even if it’s next summer. Science backs the saying, “It’s like riding a bike.” You really won’t forget. There places to rent bikes all over Cape May. I’m partial to Village Bike Shop on Lafayette, where they once did a quick fix on my daughter’s bike. You can also try Cape Island Bike Rentals, Shields Bike Rentals, or borrow a bike from your hotel.
Photographer Kathy Fallon’s gorgeous coffee table book is a love letter to the ocean and the beach. A Coastal Journey is filled with compelling, inspiring photography from Cape May, the Wildwoods and the Outer Banks.

Check out the Exit Zero
After a stubborn blue-collar carpenter turned down a famed Philadelphia publisher’s offer in the 1940s, his story of a shipwrecked sailor in Cape May lay forgetten in a closet for six decades before being brought to Exit Zero. THE CAPE tells the riveting tale of John McJack and the Lenni-Lenape indians of the Cape.
A beautifully illustrated children’s book that doubles as a perfect bluffer’s guide to the history of Cape May. IN THE LAND OF EXIT ZERO contains two dozen gorgeous images of the city’s most beloved landmarks, painted by Cape May-born artist Janelle DiLizio. Exit Zero’s Historical Editor Ben Miller provides commentary.
The illustrated history book so good that the Philadelphia Inquirer named it one of the 12 most beautiful coffee table books, THE FIRST RESORT is the book about Cape May that you definitely need to own.
This charming book, featuring illustrations of New Jersey’s lighthouses by renowned artist, Donna Elias, answers questions that many children ask: What IS a lighthouse? And why should we care? TO THE LIGHTHOUSE! is an essential keepsake for any child who is fascinated by the seas & those majestic sentinels that watch over them.

Photographer Kathy Fallon travels through some of America’s most beautiful beach territories — from Cape May County to the Outer Banks — and expertly trains her camera on the myriad scenes, shapes, lines & textures. A COASTAL JOURNEY is a treasure for anyone who loves the shore.
Just a few decades ago, Cape May was left battered by hurricanes and fires — a shadow of its former Victorian glory. A CAPE MAY STORY celebrates the 50-year evolution that helped shape the iconic seaside town, along with the family hotel, the Montreal Beach Resort, that was there for it all.
Want to know where to Eat, Shop, Stay & Play in Cool Cape May? This is the book you need for your coffee table or night stand. An unmissable concoction of advice and information, COOL CAPE MAY is the ultimate Cape May travel guide.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady A woman friend recently asked me if I had a significant other. Being a lawyer, I was suspicious and asked her, “Why?” She said she had been asked by a friend of hers on behalf of a friend. Apparently there was a girls’ night out and my name came up. How does one respond? Depending on the lady in question, perhaps it would benefit me to say I have a previous commitment. I don’t like tipping my hand when I don’t even know what cards are on the table. — Hearsay, Her Say, Who Say? Dear Hearsay Dude, you need to relax. Be mysterious and keep them guessing. Tell your informer they should treat her to a cocktail at the Washington Inn wine bar at happy hour. Perhaps you could, by happenstance, stop by and the
Wise answers to perplexing questions
ladies could treat you to a cocktail as well. And before the night ends, the lady-in-question could pop the question herself instead of this surreptitious meandering. The Answer Lady must confess that she has little tolerance for these high school shenanigans. What if you do have a girlfriend? The lady in question should have confidence in herself that she could win you away. Dear Answer Lady I play doubles tennis with the same three women every week at 10am. In order to
reserve a court, players must sign up at 6am. One of the ladies recently moved off the island to the Villas and now insists we play at 7am because she doesn’t want to sign up for a court and then drive home and have to come back. I have never been a morning person and I find this is not a good fit for me. I always thought 10am was early. What do I do? I hate to break up the group. — Matchless? Dear Matchless The Answer Lady surmises there is no flexibility on the part of the early riser. So, you must decide. Get up and shut up or indeed break up the group and maybe start playing singles. If you do decide to bail on the 7am wake-up call, simply explain it’s hard on you physically and impacts your game. More to the point — what up with this rigid 6am rule? The Answer Lady suggests a meeting and tea at the Carriage House Café and Tea Room at the Physick Estate to discuss the strategy of approaching management regarding the possibility of a more flexible scheduling arrangement. This is the 21st century — we have lots of communication options now.

old fronts... bad news for beachgoers, great news for birders. From now until December North American weather patterns are going to be dominated by ridges of high pressure forming over Canada and dropping down upon the Northeast. At least that is what bird watchers hope and pray. Cold fronts and their associated northwest winds ferry thousands of migrating birds into the land funnel that is South Jersey with Cape May the funnel’s neck. The Weather Channel’s viewer ratings climb in August as eager birders tune in for the latest prognosis. What we crave to hear are the words: “A strong cold front will sweep across our region before midnight, dropping temperatures, with northwest winds holding steady five to 10 miles per hour through tomorrow.” These are the conditions that set up big fallouts of migratory songbird followed by large scale hawk movement. If you don’t get the Weather Channel you can step outside after sunset and listen for signs that a flight is in progress. If the
star-studded sky is awash with the sounds of migrating birds, that’s a good sign. On big flight nights you can even see the tiny forms of migrants overhead, their underparts illuminated by the lights of Cape May, maybe even darting about under street lights. These are the lucky ones, so long as they avoid crashing into some storefront window. The unlucky ones are the birds that overshoot the coast and greet the morning sun well offshore. There’s a reception line of gulls waiting to pick off weary migrants, and falcons
are likewise quick to take advantage of some warbler’s misfortune. Migrating bats don’t fare any better. At dawn you can stand on the beach from Cape May to the Point and reap a harvest of birds heading landward, their wings barely holding them above the waves. I’ve seen barred owls, sora rails, whip-poor wills, and any thousands of songbirds heading into the wind, struggling for the safety of the dunes. If you don’t want to don a jacket and watch real birds in real time, turn on the Weather Channel and see the migratory flights materialize on the radar screen. The narrow band of green along the coast and the green halo over radar sites are the reflected echo of migrating birds. Maybe you recall the Gulf of Tonkin incident, the alleged attack upon US warships by North Vietnamese gun boats which led to escalated US involvement in Vietnam. Current speculation is that the radar echo of gun boats was the echo of migrating birds flying low over the water. Oh well, wars have been started by mistake before.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
I
s it possible to have too much money? It is if you use it up exploring a talent you never really had. Cape May Film Festival and Cape May Stage fans know Florence Foster Jenkins. About seven years ago, we hosted the screening of a documentary about her. She was a wealthy heiress who used her inheritance to host concerts where she was the sole singer. The problem was: she was a lousy singer. No, really lousy. That is to say, beyond bad. I don’t remember how long the documentary was, but I do recall that it was a little too long. After all, the story is fine anecdotally. But could it really fill an entire documentary? Can it really be an entire movie? It can, if the star of that movie is Meryl Streep. Florence Fosters Jenkins co-stars Hugh Grant (as Jenkins’ husband) and television’s Big Bang Theory actor Simon Helberg (her pianist). The three make this movie, which could otherwise have been entirely too long and probably not worth seeing. But with this cast, the movie works. Although the movie still could’ve been much shorter.
Streep sparkles in Florence Foster Jenkins Jenkins is a tragic character. She is filthy rich, yes. But she is misguided to use her money to promote her own singing career. When she sings her first song, it provides the comic relief that could’ve been better used in the story. Still, Helberg’s facial reactions made it completely funny. Grant is as charming as ever, if not typecast as the duplicitous yet somehow dedicated husband. There were a number of supporting cast members worth mention-
ing. First and foremost, there was a Christian McCay. You will recall that he played Orson Welles in a movie depicting a portion of that mysterious filmmakers’ life. In this movie, he plays the reporter who outs Jenkins publicly for her terrible singing. Also worth mentioning is Nina Arianda as the mouthy Agnes Stark, who makes her way to a couple performances because of her husband. At first, she joins in the jeering but ultimately gives a mocking crowd a piece of her mind. This movie would definitely not be on any watch list if not for Streep — three-time Oscar winner and the best actress working today. She may purposely have taught herself how not to carry a tune, but she certainly did carry this movie. Her costumes and persona were never as off as her singing. She brought a depth to the character and everyone around her. There were moments of sympathy for Jenkins, and I’m certain Streep is the only actress to pull that off. Overall, an entertaining but somewhat forgettable film. Disagree? Let us know at capemyfilm@hotmail.com.
