Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

grew up in Britain, where the natives are obsessed with the weather. Surveys have shown it’s the number one discussion topic. I’m not going to dispute that notion, having often had to exchange excruciating small talk along the lines of — “Good morning — cold this morning, eh? Is the sun EVER going to come out?” But nothing I grew up with could ever come close to how today’s Weather Channel deals with the art of meteorology. Apparently, back in the 1990s, TWC was a hugely respected font of information and knowledge, staffed by smart and wise meteorologists with a passion for the science. Today? It’s a ratings-driven frenzy of tabloid sensationalism that I haven’t watched since turning off in disgust as their presenters practically salivated as Hurricane Sandy headed for the shores of New Jersey in 2012. One of my enduring memories from that time was of a TWC reporting from Cape Hatteras. He was covered head to toe in heavy-duty rainwear and his feet were planted way wide, as if the approaching

storm was threatening to blow him away — then, in the background, appeared a guy leisurely walking the beach, throwing a stick for his dog. It was bogus moment and served to underline what TWC has become. The channel was sold in 2008 by a family-owned company from Norfolk, Virginia to a group led by NBC. Not surprisingly, it’s been all about ratings ever since. I’m sure you’re guessing where I’m going with all this. Once again, we watched with apprehension this past week as a storm called

Hermine threatened our shores with potentially “historic” consequences. (How many times have we heard the word “historic” to describe storms in the last five years?) Maybe global warming has inspired a whole new breed of bigger, badder storms. But it’s hard to argue that the Weather Channel has turned the business of forecasting into something approaching porn. Now, everything is a superstorm or the storm of the century or, as in the case of Sandy, a Halloween Frankenstorm. The result is that the public react with fear. They evacuate, they change their travel plans, they make a rush on grocery stores. This past weekend, visitors emptied out of Cape May, dealing a very harsh blow to local business owners, many of whom had already endured a rather weird August. Many of you, I know, are firmly in the better-safe-than-sorry camp. And I get that. I’m not suggesting we recklessly ignore reports of impending storms. What I’m suggesting is that the Weather Channel ditch this hysterical approach.

Page 14 This past weekend, they dispatched Jim Cantore to Cape May, prompting an outpouring on social media from his fans. The overall response to his arrival went along the lines of, “Oh no, Jim’s in town. We’re in for it now!” Cantore has become a superstar weatherman — a clip showing him knee the groin of a student who tried to interrupt a weather report in Charleston received more than two million views. Here’s the thing — I don’t believe weather forecasters should be rock stars. There should be no need for valueadded entertainment when it comes to the serious business of the weather. We can get our entertainment in myriad other ways. Besides, MY idea of a weather rock star is our own Dan Skeldon. The South Jerseybased meteoroligist is the only source I follow when things are looking gnarly. His forecasts are delivered without hyperbole, without drama. Put simply, I trust him. And I know that hundreds of thousands of other South Jersey residents do, too. Skeldon wasn’t critical of the overall forecasting of Hermine — he points out that the storm DID look it was going to do some serious damange before drifting east out into the Atlantic. The trouble is that his voice of reason can get drowned out by the hysteria of the Weather Channel, which then feeds into

And The Last Word Goes To... Our Man Bird

the national newspapers, in print and online. Yes, we should continue to treat Mother Nature seriously, but we need to stop going into crisis mode every time the Weather Channel gets its knickers in a twist. Congress Hall was the place to be Monday night, the venue for a fun music festival and a moving time capsule

³

burial, which was organized as part of Congress Hall’s 200th birthday celebrations. The hotel’s pooh-bah Curtis Bashaw gave a thoughtful speech that had the crowd considering what life would be like in 2066. I’m guessing we’ll be underwater in the wake of a hundred monster storms, if the Weather Channel’s hysteriologists are to be believed.

The Old Fogey

C

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

all that a storm surge? I’ve paddled through 10 times worse and not got the tassles on my leopardskin loafers damp! I remember the time a combination of hurricane, spring tide and an offshore atom test (not the smartest idea to generate extra income for the city) caused a 300-foot surge that caused us all to have to hold our breaths for seven minutes. Well, I say “us all”: technically speaking everyone held their breaths for as long as they were able, it was just that anyone unable to do so for less that seven minutes did not survive. On the plus side, Cape May’s gene pool did benefit from such accidental eugenics, and it’s no cooincidence that we have put forward no less than 38 world champion free divers, a dozen balloon-blowing records and five bagpipe titles. The latter is a doubleedged sword: listening to bagpipes played well is akin to a religious experience: having to listen to any Scotchmen in earshot turning up to rage, cry and shout “freedom!” is awkward and hazardous should those most thin-

skinned of people take offence. That’s why we held the World Bagpiping Tournament here just once: sales of single malt and deep-fried food were through the roof, but arrests for public intoxication and excess maudlin singing were up 5,000 percent. That said, it was still a more enjoyable event than the Pygmy Blowpipe Contest we hosted (enjoyable for the public at large, I mean: for the winning blowgunning pygmies, it was clearly a whole lot of fun) and less noisy than that that time we double booked the Riverdance conference and the Landmine Expo.

Anyways, back to storm surges and matters oceanic: obviously, we do not want Cape May to join the legendary South Cape May under the waves — I will talk no more of that night: suffice of to say I will never again drunkenly declare: “we are totally safe with the US Army dynamite stores buried here” whilst lighting a cigar, and stamping my bespurred boots on the flint floor tiles at the same time, to emphasise my point. And so we have had the best scientific minds for a mile around working on the problem, and have calculated that if we have every visitor to our fair city bring in ten pounds of finest sand to be scattered on the beach, then in ten years the dunes will be 30 feet tall, providing us with peace of mind. Well, other than those people whose businesses and homes are within 50 feet of the beach: obviously they will be buried. The alternative is that we learn to extend our breath-holding abilities to something close to a month at a time. Or grow gills. Or act to burn less fossil fuels and to drive electric cars, but really, now we’re getting silly.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, a food and drink celebration

he 20th Annual Cape May Food and Wine Celebration runs from September 9 through 18. Presented by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities (MAC), this festival draws visitors by the busload — the American Bus Association calls it a “Top 100 Event in North America.” For 10 days, foodies explore what makes a Cape May plate so tasty, touring vineyards, farms and the wharf to find out where food starts, and touring restaurants to enjoy the finished product. For chocophiles, the highlight is the Chocolate Lover’s Feast. There’s an ancient tradition of worshiping all things chocolate, which may be why the scientific name for the plant is theobroma cacao, from the Greek for “food of the gods.” People in the Americas were fermenting cacao fruit into an alcoholic beverage 3400 years ago, and leaders of pre-Columbian civilizations in Mexico drank bitter chocolate for vigor. Cacao beans were used for currency and played a role in religious ceremonies. When Spanish explorers brought the drink home to Europe in the 1500s, they

sweetened it with honey. Chocolate remained available only to the very wealthy, until 1828, when Dutch chemist Coenraad Johannes van Houten democratized it, creating cheaper powdered chocolate, or Dutch cocoa. Chocolate’s popularity grew, and it became a common dessert element. For chefs, however, chocolate is just another ingredient, for use in dishes both sweet and savory. Salads can be dressed with chocolate balsamic vinaigrette. Chocolate parmesan crostini can be served as an appetizer. Chocolate finds its way into mole and other sauces — steak,

tomato, and barbecue. You can even enjoy chocolate pasta. The Chocolate Lover’s Feast features seven different courses of chocolate creations at 1pm on Saturday, September 10 at the Blue Rose Inn. A chef will be on hand to explain how each dish was prepared. Admission is $40. If — gasp! — chocolate isn’t your thing, follow the Cape May Wine Trail on Fridays, September 9 and 16 from noon to 6. Enjoy lunch at the Carriage House Café before a MAC trolley takes you to tastings at Natali Vineyards, Hawk Haven Vineyard and Willow Creek Winery. Admission of $75 includes lunch, wine tastings at each vineyard and a wine tasting glass. Or, sign on for the Chefs’ Dine-Arounds, the “ultimate culinary experience,” September 11, 12, 14 and 15 at 6pm. Five different premier restaurants will each serve a single course, paired with wine from a sponsoring winery. A trolley shuttles patrons between restaurants and courses. Admission is $125, including gratuity. Tickets go fast, so make your reservations. Most festival events are not kid-friendly. Call MAC at 800-2754278 or visitcapemaymac.org.

Photographer Kathy Fallon’s gorgeous coffee table book is a love letter to the ocean and the beach. A Coastal Journey is filled with compelling, inspiring photography from Cape May, the Wildwoods and the Outer Banks.

Check out the Exit Zero

After a stubborn blue-collar carpenter turned down a famed Philadelphia publisher’s offer in the 1940s, his story of a shipwrecked sailor in Cape May lay forgetten in a closet for six decades before being brought to Exit Zero. THE CAPE tells the riveting tale of John McJack and the Lenni-Lenape indians of the Cape.

A beautifully illustrated children’s book that doubles as a perfect bluffer’s guide to the history of Cape May. IN THE LAND OF EXIT ZERO contains two dozen gorgeous images of the city’s most beloved landmarks, painted by Cape May-born artist Janelle DiLizio. Exit Zero’s Historical Editor Ben Miller provides commentary.

The illustrated history book so good that the Philadelphia Inquirer named it one of the 12 most beautiful coffee table books, THE FIRST RESORT is the book about Cape May that you definitely need to own.

This charming book, featuring illustrations of New Jersey’s lighthouses by renowned artist, Donna Elias, answers questions that many children ask: What IS a lighthouse? And why should we care? TO THE LIGHTHOUSE! is an essential keepsake for any child who is fascinated by the seas & those majestic sentinels that watch over them.

Photographer Kathy Fallon travels through some of America’s most beautiful beach territories — from Cape May County to the Outer Banks — and expertly trains her camera on the myriad scenes, shapes, lines & textures. A COASTAL JOURNEY is a treasure for anyone who loves the shore.

Just a few decades ago, Cape May was left battered by hurricanes and fires — a shadow of its former Victorian glory. A CAPE MAY STORY celebrates the 50-year evolution that helped shape the iconic seaside town, along with the family hotel, the Montreal Beach Resort, that was there for it all.

Want to know where to Eat, Shop, Stay & Play in Cool Cape May? This is the book you need for your coffee table or night stand. An unmissable concoction of advice and information, COOL CAPE MAY is the ultimate Cape May travel guide.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I met a man online and we have been dating for over a month. Recently I happened to see a post of his on Facebook pertaining to Black Lives Matter which I thought was racist and I commented on it. I wasn’t judgmental. I just offered the opinion that perhaps he didn’t understand the context. It took a couple of days before I realized I hadn’t heard from him and then I found out he defriended me. Should I call him? I can’t believe he could be that narrow minded. He was such a nice man. — Bewildered Dear Bewildered Funny isn’t it that the person we sit across from isn’t always the person we see on Facebook. Be happy that you stood up for a principle. With beliefs that far apart,

Wise answers to perplexing questions

this relationship had no future anyway and now the deck is clear for you to seek someone more compatible. Do yourself a favor and forget this and expunge him. Call Accents on Beauty. Get a new do, a facial and most importantly — a massage. Try the Queen Bee massage. It seems most appropriate. Then you will be ready to get back in the saddle again. Dear Answer Lady My friend and I have played golf every Thursday for 10 years. He retired in June, as

did his wife and now he brings her to play every week. First of all, she’s a hack and slows us up. Secondly, now my wife wants to know why she can’t play to make it a foursome. I golf, Answer Lady, to get away from my wife for four hours once a week. We spend a lot of time together and I feel time apart is healthy. Furthermore, the whole dynamic is gone. We can’t joke or talk sports. What do I do now? — Golf Challenged Dear Challenged This should have never happened in the first place. Your friend should not have brought his wife to play without your permission. So you need to talk to your friend. When he tells you his wife nagged him into it, and there will be no living with her, you will have to decide. Maybe a mixed foursome on Thursday and then the two of you on another day? However, said wife might be a Kling On. If so, Cape May National has a lot of golfers. Plan B: Start looking around for another guy to play with — preferably one without a wife who wants to play golf. It’s important for men and women to get together separately.

Bird Droppings

O

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

ur Monday morning walk at the Nature Conservancy preserve on Sunset Boulevard yielded 59 species. Number 59 was broad-winged hawk, a species that does not breed south of the canal. The four birds circling in a “kettle” were the first raptor migrants of this most auspicious season. On September 1, I and Cape May Bird Observatory celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Cape May Hawk Count conducted daily at the hawk watch platform in Cape May Point State Park. Inaugurated in 1976 as a joint initiative of New Jersey Forest and Parks, and New Jersey Audubon, with funding from the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the count established Cape May as the raptor capital of North America. Adding to the Cape May hawk watch’s appeal are the interpretive naturalists whose guidance ensures that even first-time visitors have an enriching day under raptor-filled skies. Visitors can count on what will be for many a life-changing experience, the day they stared into the heavens and witnessed the miracle of migration. Some of the birds pass-

ing over Cape May will travel all the way to South America. These hemispheric-vaulting birds of prey include the four broad-winged wawks seen Monday. But the vast distance to be covered is only one reason these hawks depart so early. Another is that they feed primarily upon coldblooded prey. Leaving now ensures the birds will not want for food when temperatures fall. In addition, broad-wingeds are highly dependant upon thermals to ferry them aloft where they then set their wings and glide, trading

elevation for miles. Leaving now means that the road ahead will be both thermal-rich and bracketed by many hours of daylight. Other early raptor migrants include American kestrel and bald eagle. When the Cape May Hawk Count was initiated, kestrels were abundant, eagles rare — now kestrel numbers are faltering and bald eagles are recovering. The trends for both species can be plotted by the annual species totals gathered over the course of 40 years. Keeping tabs on migrating hawks is a way of assessing the health and stability of the environment as a whole, but if you want to watch hawks for no greater purpose than personal gratification, that’s fine. You’ll find lots of like-minded company at platform, people from all over the planet who augment their trip to Cape May with a trip to the hawk watch. See you there, under raptor-rich skies. If you do not own binoculars, stop at the CMBO store on your way to Cape May Point State Park and amend this stupendous shortfall or borrow a pair of Swarovski optics at the hawk watch platform. Tell them Seymore sent you.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

C

ombine mystical fantasy with masterful artwork for the tour de force animated feature Kubo and the Two Strings. The story is compelling and the action unwavering, starting with Kubo as a baby with his mother washed to shore after what should have been a catastrophic storm at sea. He grows to be a young boy who cares for his frail mother on the outskirts of a small town. Every day he goes to town and earns a living with his magical command of ordinary paper, turning them into extraordinary performing works of origami. Kubo’s aunts and grandfather, though, are out to kill him. They already took one of his eyes. Oh, and no this is not a cheery film. It’s melancholy but works somehow. Kubo’s mother warns him not to stay out after dark. But he does. His aunts find him, witches who are indeed bent on killing him. He runs and the journey begins. I’m recommending this film but with a few criticisms. I wanted to love this film, but in the end I couldn’t be as glowing as I’d

Kubo and the Two Strings has its moments like. That’s not because of the macabre — that never kills a film alone. Throughout the whole film I couldn’t get my bearings. Hard to describe, standing on solid ground with a film simply means you have the foundation to relate to it and feel all the emotions they’re hoping for you to feel. Kubo is played by kid actor Art Parkinson. Charlize Theron plays Monkey, who guides Kubo through the majority of the film. Matthew McConaughey plays Beetle, a war-

rior who helps Monkey and Kubo through their journey. McConaughey’s voice was offputting for some reason. Maybe because it’s his distinctly American accent and his character is supposed to be a Japanese warrior. Or maybe it’s those ridiculous Lincoln car commercials. What’s up with that? Doesn’t he have enough money for goodness sake? Theron’s voice was more organic than McConaughey, but still a little off. Beyond voicing, the dialogue was quirky. Asian influence with American slang and idiosyncrasies didn’t help to orient me completely to the film. Perhaps it was trying to be too many things to too many people. Still, the film is beautiful to behold. It approaches a very philosophically satisfying energy, then falls only a little short — like a big man at the carnival sledgehammer game. He tries, but he gets right under the bell — the “Excellent Try!” level. Many will disagree with me. They see the film as a masterpiece. I agree it is exceptional but was hoping to hear that ring! All that said: highly recommended or “Excellent Try!”
