The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

am not a fan of balloons. I have been of this opinion since that blowhard Jules Verne had the temerity to try and fly over Cape May when researching some dreadful book, and of course, we called out the militia and shot him down. What? You didn’t know we have a militia? It was formed in the Old Days when the Lenape Indians were battling the White Man. And don’t you dare assume we were the bad guys. No, friends, the militia was formed entirely from Lenape, plus those of us who liked the costumes and feathers. Along with some folks who were just spoiling for a fight and after a few malts in the Brown Room, cared not a jot what side they signed up for. In truth, we were never too sure who were were fighting anyways: I remember after a week-long pitched battle in the swamp that became Uncle Bill’s we realised that in fact it was not rapacious land-grabbers were were fighting, but a junior baseball team (on reflection, we HAD been fighting for rather a long time, and perhaps the decades had flown past with unexpected speed).

So anyways, the militia is semi-retired these days, awaiting the bell atop Congress Hall to ring 23 times to be summoned. I can’t really recall where it is we agreed to muster, but it’s never hard to find a fight in Cape May, so it will all work out right in the end. But back to balloons, and I refer not to that garish ginger empty-headed skin of hot air running for president, but to actual balloons, as favored by simpletons, small children and clowns. I have disliked them on the basis that clowns like them for a while, but it took some well-meaning soul to explain to

me (in way too much detail: I am fast on the uptake and if anyone spends more than 20 seconds explaining something to me, either I have long since gotten the point, or never will, and either way will strike them about the head with my cane) that those party balloons are killing all sorts of wildlife in the oceans. I confess I was not paying 100 per cent attention and so couldn’t swear whether the balloons are in some odd way poisoning our dear acquatic cousins, or perhaps distracting them with their irresistible inflatable fun so much that the poor dolphins are forgetting to eat. Either way, though, I have had enough and am activating an old Cape May law that allows upstanding citizens to shoot clowns on sight. Obviously, this will take a lot of balloons out of circulation, too, and so we cannot shed (buckets of paper) tears for those deceased clowns. Oh, also, they are banned at parties: the punishment for breaking this law is to be attached to 300 such balloons and floated away to Wildwood, to be shot down and eaten/worshipped as a deity.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, your furry best friends

our dog doesn’t ask for much. In return for some kibble, a morning walk and a little affection, your best friend provides security, exercise and entertainment. Fido encourages you to make friends with your dog-walking neighbors. He can prompt you to redecorate — you never liked that tasty antique, anyway. Your pet can help you invest in your local economy, as you pay the groomer, the veterinarian, the rug shampooer and the shoe store. He can convince people you’re not crazy for talking to yourself, and, as the late, great Nora Ephron said, “When your children are teenagers, it’s important to have a dog so that someone in the house is happy to see you.” The least you can do is take Fido on vacation. Cape May is a great town for dogs. Many rentals and inns welcome well-behaved pets. The Beach Shack’s Paws Up! package includes a doggie welcome kit, featuring a special leash. Stay at Billmae Cottage and let your pet enjoy Yappy Hour, where dogs and owners socialize over treats. Several restau-

rants let your dog join you for outdoor dining. Dogs can’t go on the mall or the promenade, but many other businesses are dog friendly, keeping water bowls outside their doors, or handing out dog treats at the drive-up window. You can frolic with your dog on the Delaware Bay beaches in the early morning and late afternoon, or bring them along to a winery tour — Hawk Haven welcomes dogs on their patio. For $10, you can get your dog a weekly pass to the dog park on Lafayette Street. This week, your pal can strut his stuff at the annual Mutt Strut on September 17,

from 8am until noon. The Mutt Strut lets you enjoy a fun morning with your dog on the Cape May promenade while raising money for a good cause. Dress your pet in costume or let him go naked. Let him/her compete in the pet trick contest. Watch a dog obedience demonstration and enter the auction. Admission is $1 per leg for dogs and humans. Humans under 10 are free with a registered adult. Register near Convention Hall. Proceeds benefit local dogrelated charities and Wings of Rescue, which helps volunteer pilots fly pets scheduled to be euthanized from crowded shelters to no-kill shelters. The organization has already saved over 20,000 animals. For more information call 609-513-4770 or e-mail cmcdotc@comcast.net. The rain date is Sunday. After the Mutt Strut, take your beautiful beast over to the Rusty Nail at 4pm for their dog pageant. The winner will win a $250 Beach Shack/Rusty Nail gift certificate, and have his photo featured on the official Rusty Nail Doggie Beer. Dogs will be judged on tricks, style and more.

Check out the Exit Zero

After a stubborn blue-collar carpenter turned down a famed Philadelphia publisher’s offer in the 1940s, his story of a shipwrecked sailor in Cape May lay forgetten in a closet for six decades before being brought to Exit Zero. THE CAPE tells the riveting tale of John McJack and the Lenni-Lenape indians of the Cape.

A beautifully illustrated children’s book that doubles as a perfect bluffer’s guide to the history of Cape May. IN THE LAND OF EXIT ZERO contains two dozen gorgeous images of the city’s most beloved landmarks, painted by Cape May-born artist Janelle DiLizio. Exit Zero’s Historical Editor Ben Miller provides commentary.

The illustrated history book so good that the Philadelphia Inquirer named it one of the 12 most beautiful coffee table books, THE FIRST RESORT is the book about Cape May that you definitely need to own.

This charming book, featuring illustrations of New Jersey’s lighthouses by renowned artist, Donna Elias, answers questions that many children ask: What IS a lighthouse? And why should we care? TO THE LIGHTHOUSE! is an essential keepsake for any child who is fascinated by the seas & those majestic sentinels that watch over them.

Photographer Kathy Fallon travels through some of America’s most beautiful beach territories — from Cape May County to the Outer Banks — and expertly trains her camera on the myriad scenes, shapes, lines & textures. A COASTAL JOURNEY is a treasure for anyone who loves the shore.

Just a few decades ago, Cape May was left battered by hurricanes and fires — a shadow of its former Victorian glory. A CAPE MAY STORY celebrates the 50-year evolution that helped shape the iconic seaside town, along with the family hotel, the Montreal Beach Resort, that was there for it all.

Want to know where to Eat, Shop, Stay & Play in Cool Cape May? This is the book you need for your coffee table or night stand. An unmissable concoction of advice and information, COOL CAPE MAY is the ultimate Cape May travel guide.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I have been dating this lady for six months and she leaves me bewildered and confused. We go out. We have a good time. The next day she treats me like a stranger. Just when I decide to write her off, she calls and asks me if I want to go out. I go along with this because when it’s good, it’s very good. But when it’s bad, it’s like I’m in the deep freeze. I’m hoping there is a future for us, but sometimes I wonder if I’m wasting my time. What do you think, Answer Lady? — Waiting in Limbo Dear Limbo The Answer Lady thinks you are not in Limbo but Purgatory and it’s time for you to buy yourself a Get-Out-of-Hell card. This woman is commitment phobic and probably

Wise answers to perplexing questions

has one or two other nice guys like you on the string. Time to smell the roses and move on. Warning: the minute you definitively tell her this isn’t working for you, she will do everything in her power to reel you back in. That’s her game. Don’t succumb. Be strong. The Answer Lady suggests you put yourself in places where you might meet someone else worthy of you. Start with Saturday at Beach Plum Farm or mingle with the birders at Cape May Point State Park. The experience will be healing and open you up to new possibilities

Dear Answer Lady I don’t know why all my friends have steady girlfriends and I don’t. They tell me you can’t find the love of your life in the Ugly Mug, but I disagree. Timing is everything. But where would you suggest I look for Lady Love? — Looking for love Dear Looking for Love The Answer Lady knows at least two married couples who met in the Ugly Mug. However, you might want to expand your horizons. Sometimes, love means you have to get off the bar stool and exert a little effort. The King Eddy room at the Chalfonte is a little more conducive to conversation, for example, and you can continue the meet-and-greet out on the rockers on the front porch. How romantic is that? You might also try getting involved in an activity, non-alcoholic related. Kayaking is a great way to meet people. Pop over to the Nature Center of Cape May. They offer kayaking and other outdoor activities that will be fun to do, while exposing you to the sights and put you in a position to meet someone who shares a common interest.

Bird Droppings

M

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

y good friend Victor Emanuel of Victor Emanuel Nature Tours called the other day, still glowing from his most recent young birders camp experience. Camp Cascade is just one of several youth birding camps created by Victor. This would be his last, he confided. The reigns were being turned over to Cape May birders Michael O’Brien and Louise Zemaitis, who are part of the Victor Emanuel Nature Tours staff. Part of Victor’s enthusiasm was anchored in an insight given to him by one of the camp’s young birders. In response to the near-standard question, “What is it you like about watching birds?” Victor received a novel reply. Said the young camper, “Birds were calming.” Like most people, the young camper had a hectic, task-filled life and engaging birds offered a momentary reprieve. Her answer floored me, too. Not because it was inaccurate, but because a truth so obvious had never occurred to me before. While I have often called birdwatch-

ing “anchoring,” its ability to ease stress had escaped my conscious awareness, even though I, too, for years have used bird study as a means of reducing stress. Rare birds or common, it makes no difference. When it comes to calming stress, a sparrow searching for breadcrumbs on the sidewalk is as good as a flock of swallows cutting cookie cutter patterns in the sky. Birds are everywhere so why not let them take up residency in the calming centers of your mind? One word of caution. Try not to

become so obsessed with birds that missing a rare or aspired to species induces stress and anxiety. I once observed a California birding couple reduced to arms-folded-across-thechest silence over the failure of one to alert the other to the location of an American tree sparrow. Happily, the bird lingered into the next day and harmony was restored. Having a bad day? Dog pee on the carpet? Car running funny? Try sitting on the porch and watching a cardinal or catbird going about the busy process of being a bird. Such a simple thing. But it really works. You can almost feel your blood pressure dropping. Here, I’ll write you a prescription... To reduce stress, spend three minutes every morning watching the common birds of your yard. If stress continues up the dosage. You cannot overdose on birds and there are no known negative side effects if you engage birds in moderation. This means not crossing over to County Listing or Year Listing or Month Listing or any other subpursuits. Just watch the birdy.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

T

here is more than a fine line between steadfast live-off-the-land ideology and wanting to eat a cheeseburger at a diner. In the film Captain Fantastic, we learn there is in fact a deep divide. I am finding that same divide between a film I want to love and instead end up only liking. Ben (played by Viggo Mortensen) has taken his family far, far off the grid. They live deep in the woods in huts and makeshift structures. The kids are well disciplined in book learning and physical fitness. Whatever they eat they have hunted or grown. We join the story with Ben’s six children, played brilliantly by the most hopeful of rising stars, missing their mother (Trin Miller). She is receiving treatment at a hospital back in civilization. Mother then takes her own life; she suffered from bipolar disorder. Jack, her father (played by Frank Langella), blames Ben for his daughter’s demise. And Jack is not far off the truth. Unfortunately, no character in the film can really keep hold on to anything close to the truth. They all lack a moral compass —

Viggo Mortensen stars in Captain Fantastic or perhaps there are too many compasses at play. Ben is a complex character who is part caregiver, part bully and a little sociopath thrown in for good measure. The characters around him are less complex, bordering on caricatures. The performances of Mortensen, Langella and, most notably George McCay as Ben’s son, Bo, are outstanding. I wanted to cheer for these kids, and for Ben, but couldn’t muster the energy. I want them to order the cheeseburger they want

at a diner they visit on their journey to the mother’s funeral. I want them to make peace between what is an honorable burial for her versus the supposed way she wanted (even though she was probably having an episode when she penned her wishes). I sympathized with Jack, the father-in-law, as he worked to get on his grandchildren’s good side so they could live with him. Ben appears to relinquish control of the family he clearly put in harm’s way. There are some twists that are certainly understandable considering the trajectory on which all of the characters (shallow or complicated) are traveling. In the end, as if in a flash, we’re supposed to take Ben’s change of heart as a sign of movement toward the middle. Sadly, it was too late for me. The movie was beautifully filmed with outstanding cinematography and was funny and, at times, moving. Certainly it is receiving critical acclaim and audiences love it. But for me, there is the divide: grateful to have seen this film but regretful that I could not recommend it more enthusiastically.

SOPHIE is a Labrador Retriever mix looking for a nice family. She is a well-rounded nine year old who at first meeting can be a little shy. Once Sophie warms up, you will get a lot of tail wags and nudges to pet her. She would be great with other dogs, cats and even kids! Don’t pass up the opportunity for a great family pet. Adopt today!

TIMON is an American Bulldog and Boxer mix with a mug that will melt hearts. Although he has a few things to learn, given the chance he will make a great companion. Come in today and meet this mean-muggin’ cutie pie! Hakuna Matata!

JASPER is a 14 year old, black Labrador Retriever mix who lived in the same home his whole life until one of his family members fell ill. He often howls for his family who he misses dearly. Give this old fella another chance at happiness. He is housebroken, can live with children and is a loyal companion. Don’t pass him by! Adopt today!

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

GIDGET is a Calico who has had a rough time trying to be a good mom. Being a homeless mother, she had to go house to house and beg for food to feed her babies. One day, Gidget was found and taken to the shelter without her kittens and noone to care for them. Finally a nice man brought them to her but all have been adopted. Adopt Gidget today!

SABLE is a tiger striped Tabby that loves to be petted and given attention. She requires a special diet and a medicine called Lactulose every day, but it’s not a big deal so no need to fret! Sable would love to be given the chance to keep your feet warm at night. Won’t you give her a chance?

CHOWDER was found outside a local restaurant. He still gets freaked out when meeting new people. But years of being “shooed” and yelled at makes it a little hard for him to trust. One thing Chowder does love is food, especially canned wet food. Come to the shelter today and meet the boy behind this adorable face!
