Ramblings From The Editor

T

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

he people of Cape May got their first chance last week to check out the candidates running for office this November. Okay, so two of the candidates are pretty well known to the voting public, but two are newbies. The location was the penthouse of the Grand Hotel, with its panoramic ocean views. The forum was organized by the Chamber of Commerce, with the candidates answering mostly questions they’d had time to review, with a few audience questions on the night. It wasn’t a debate, so there wasn’t any verbal sparring. Instead, the candidates got the chance to say what they cared most about. We’ve got a few weeks to talk about this election in more depth (and we will be) so for now I’m going to share the briefest of brief insights on how the candidates showed up... Ed Mahaney has been the mayor for eight years, and it showed — I don’t think he once referred to his notes. With a lifetime in education, it’s no surprise that Ed gives off the grouchy headmaster vibe. Chuck Lear, who’s running for mayor,

In the coming weeks, I will be giving each of the candidates a forum for their views. I hope they all take advantage. There’s been a passing of the torch (or should I say, conch) at one of the area’s waterfront eateries. Ed and Teresa Henry last week sold Harpoon Henry’s to a company headed up by Brady Schoenrock, who’s been a longtime customer at the restaurant (hey, a man has to do his research) and is a hospitality industry veteran. Brady will be managing the day-to-day operations, assisted by a management team containing Harpoon veterans Dan Starrett (chef), Dottie Spedden (general manager) and Chelsea Seonia (manager). The new name is Harpoons on the Bay, and Brady told me they will be staying open through October 30, with a reopening planned for mid-April. I don’t know Brady but this summer he gave a fabulous review of Exit Zero Cookhouse on Facebook, so clearly he is a man of impeccable taste and instincts. He most recently served as marketing director for a multi-location brewpub company — he moved to the Phila-

seemed very comfortable with the idea of being in office. He combines a soothing vibe with a gentle-but-firm air of authority. Tricia Hendricks was the candidate who appeared to have done the most homework. Very well-versed in all the topics but a little over-prepared and stiff in the delivery. Zack Mullock is another first-timer, and he didn’t try to pretend otherwise. Zack came across as warm and funny. The class joker, but with a serious message — he seems to have a good head for business.

Page 14 delphia area from Houston, Texas 13 years ago and quickly became a Cape May convert after making his first trip here. Eight years ago, he became a homeowner. As for Ed and Teresa, who have been in the food biz for a quarter of a century (they used to operate Henry’s on the Beach and Zoe’s), the handover gives them the perfect opportunity to follow their dreams. Ed grew up wanting to be a rodeo cowboy (so he will be doing some stints at Cowtown next summer), while Teresa always craved the life of an exotic dancer. It helps that Ed and Teresa live in Islamorada, Florida each winter, where there are plenty of places for Teresa to pursue her vocation. While she’s in Cape May, Teresa will likely be working a couple days at a local winery, while Ed will be working on his tennis game. To each of them, best of luck and I hope to clink your glasses on more than a few occasions next summer. And to Brady and his gang... best of luck to you all, too. A few people have begun noticing the to rent sign at the Exit Zero Beach Store. Yes, we’re going out of business there. No, it’s not a bad thing at all. If you didn’t know this already, next year we are moving to a brand-new, purpose-built store, restaurant (and gas station). To prepare for that,

we’re scaling back so we can focus on the big switch. We’ve also downsized at our Global HQ on Sunset Boulevard, moving back to our original store at the end of Chattel Row. Moving into our other space will be the lovely folks at Accent on Beauty (a much shorter walk to enjoy my weekly massage). In the meantime, we’ve been hosting a

50% off sale at both the Beach and Sunset stores. We’ve been breaking all sorts of sales records since we begun the sale last Thursday — funny how that works. The good news is that the sale will be continuing till further notice (and NO... subscriptions don’t count in the sale). Until next week... stay thirsty, my friends.

A VERY SPECIAL THANK-YOU To our valued customers, friends and our wonderful staff for the last 13 seasons at Harpoon Henry’s. It has been quite a ride and we have loved sharing our beautiful spot on the Bay with you. Thank you for supporting us over the years. It’s time to pass the torch — or should I say sunsets. We wish continued success to the new owners of Harpoons on the Bay and know they will continue in the tradition of a fun, casual place with good food and drinks, beautiful sunsets and a great spot to hang with friends. We hope that you support them as well as you have supported us. Thanks again and we will see you around town. Fondly, Ed & Teresa Henry

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

am not one for honey, though I do like bees. My aversion to honey is not some trivial matter of taste, but stems back from my time in the Sudan, when I was captured by the enemy, stripped naked, smeared in honey and tied to a camel. What happened next is not for polite company. Also, I am not one for the anthropomorphizing of bears, and that wretched Pooh creation is designed only to lull people into the utterly false notion that bears are not our mortal enemies. It is not the ape we must fear most (though we should fear them also) but the ursine fiend, who would have risen up against us long since if not for their infeasibly short legs and the resulting inability to drive a motor vehicle. Bees, though, as rather special. Obviously not African killer bees, who are, to be frank, assholes. But honey bees and bumble bees are the stars of the insect world, possessing more intelligence than a great many dogs, every cat ever made, and a small but amusing proportion of Wildwooders. We did at one stage have the biggest bee hive in America, but (and

you may find this hard to believe) we rather let the success get to our heads, and, falling back on our unofficial motto “enough is never enough”, we decided to combine the three billion bees into one colossal hive. Who knew that when over a billion bees are allowed to combine in society that they form a super intelligence that rivals a supercomputer, or a small god? Well, they immediately took over The Admiral Hotel, either driving guests out or using them as worker drones to adapt the building to their satisfaction. Before we really knew what was going on, they had made a

Superqueen the size of an Airstream trailer, and she had out-thought the greatest strategic minds Cape May has, and cut off all power and contact with the mainland. Luckily for us, my old First Cav buddy Wally Herbert had smuggled an entire Huey back from ‘Nam, and it still had a pair of 1000-gallon chemical tanks strapped on the sides. Quick as you like, we had assembled the whole team (we would have been faster but I had to get my hassled cavalry hat dry-cleaned) and were able to drop the tanks of super-strong-herbicide/insecticide/peoplicide right through the main doors. Of course it cost us the hotel, but it was all for the good, as when we served through the wreckage we found advanced bee plans to cure all illness, end all wars and travel to the stars. We humans would have been allowed to go, too, but not in charge, and clearly that is never acceptable. That blip aside, though, we have always gotten on well, the bees and me, and I love to while away a summer afternoon in the garden as they buzz usefully around. “We won,” I mutter, and smile, then have a little nap.

The Activity Column

P

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the Dragon Boat Festival

addles up! It’s time to cheer on your favorite team as the Cape May Chamber of Commerce presents the annual Dragon Boat Festival this Saturday, September 24 from 9am to 5 pm. This is the fifth year that the Dragon Boat Festival will draw people together for a day of charity, community and teamwork. Who could have predicted that this quirky activity would draw such a cross-section of people, from teens to grandparents, from near and far, in singles and groups? Who thought a fall event on the water would draw so many visitors? And who could have foreseen the costumes? Yet year after year, people recruit 20 of their friends to paddle and drum their way along a race course in Cape May’s harbor. Teams pay $1000 to board aluminum boats modeled on traditional Chinese boats — complete with dragon heads — and compete in three heats along a 200 meter straight course. They raise funds for good causes, from fighting cancer and cystic fibrosis to

helping animals to supporting their schools. Teams are made up of alumni groups, cancer survivors, self-proclaimed witches and other community-minded folks who are willing to combine sweat and silliness into a great day. No experience is necessary, and cheering spectators are welcome. There is plenty to keep everyone busy between heats, with a beer garden, entertainment, food, shopping and demonstrations crowding the shore. Many dragon boaters make a weekend of it. Some hotels, like La Mer and the Chalfonte, offer discounts. A trip to the reptile

house at Cape May Zoo seems like a fitting jaunt for teams seeking inspiration. You may not find an actual dragon, but the day geckos are a good substitute, and it’s always fun to try to spot the tiny legs on the scheltopusik, that misnamed European legless lizard. The zoo is open from 10am to 4:30, free admission. Take in a show — East Lynne Theater Company presents Biography, a play from 1932 which shows how little has changed in politics. Disgraced at Cape May Stage takes an funny, adult look at a liquor-fueled dinner party in post-9/11 America. Solve a mystery with the Impromptu Players at Aleathea’s Restaurant, enjoy an old-fashioned roast beef dinner with the Kiwanis Club, or take in new art from Stan Sperlak with The Sublime and The Cape at SOMA NewArt Gallery. Summer evenings in Cape May are perfect for live music outdoors. Friday and Saturday, at the Ocean Club’s pool bar, there’s live music, and Nicki Sbaffoni is on the Roof at Harry’s on Saturday. If all that paddling hasn’t worn you out, Billy D. Light Trio at the Boiler Room will take you into the wee hours.

Photographer Kathy Fallon’s gorgeous coffee table book is a love letter to the ocean and the beach. A Coastal Journey is filled with compelling, inspiring photography from Cape May, the Wildwoods and the Outer Banks.

Check out the Exit Zero

After a stubborn blue-collar carpenter turned down a famed Philadelphia publisher’s offer in the 1940s, his story of a shipwrecked sailor in Cape May lay forgetten in a closet for six decades before being brought to Exit Zero. THE CAPE tells the riveting tale of John McJack and the Lenni-Lenape indians of the Cape.

A beautifully illustrated children’s book that doubles as a perfect bluffer’s guide to the history of Cape May. IN THE LAND OF EXIT ZERO contains two dozen gorgeous images of the city’s most beloved landmarks, painted by Cape May-born artist Janelle DiLizio. Exit Zero’s Historical Editor Ben Miller provides commentary.

The illustrated history book so good that the Philadelphia Inquirer named it one of the 12 most beautiful coffee table books, THE FIRST RESORT is the book about Cape May that you definitely need to own.

This charming book, featuring illustrations of New Jersey’s lighthouses by renowned artist, Donna Elias, answers questions that many children ask: What IS a lighthouse? And why should we care? TO THE LIGHTHOUSE! is an essential keepsake for any child who is fascinated by the seas & those majestic sentinels that watch over them.

Photographer Kathy Fallon travels through some of America’s most beautiful beach territories — from Cape May County to the Outer Banks — and expertly trains her camera on the myriad scenes, shapes, lines & textures. A COASTAL JOURNEY is a treasure for anyone who loves the shore.

Just a few decades ago, Cape May was left battered by hurricanes and fires — a shadow of its former Victorian glory. A CAPE MAY STORY celebrates the 50-year evolution that helped shape the iconic seaside town, along with the family hotel, the Montreal Beach Resort, that was there for it all.

Want to know where to Eat, Shop, Stay & Play in Cool Cape May? This is the book you need for your coffee table or night stand. An unmissable concoction of advice and information, COOL CAPE MAY is the ultimate Cape May travel guide.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am lose to my fraternity brothers. We are starting our senior year and it has been a great run. However, I am getting some flack from some of my frat brothers. By coincidence, every time one of them breaks up with their girlfriend, I happen to be on hand to... comfort her. I can’t help it. I feel sorry for them and they seem to turn to me. I like being helpful but I’m stung that my fellow brothers don’t see it the same way. And we only date for a few weeks. Is this so wrong? — Snake Dear Snake Appropriate nom de plume. And since you do sign your letter “Snake,” the Answer Lady thinks you know full well that your opportunistic machinations are self-serving and nothing else. Get thee to the Ugly Mug or

Wise answers to perplexing questions

Carney’s and find your own girlfriend. And when YOU break up with her, don’t be surprised when your frat bros return the favor. Dear Answer Lady I am a retired professor of economics and have been technologically challenged for, well most of my life. I do get on board when necessary. All my classroom work was computer generated and correspondence via email. I just have never gone for trendy gadgets. Recently, however, I have decided that I really need a smartphone. All my friends are

plugged in and it makes it difficult for me to make social engagements. By the time I get the message, my friends have already found a fourth for bridge and golf. And I want to be able to correspond and do banking while I’m way. The problem is my son and husband keep telling me I don’t need it and will never be able to figure it out. Therefore, it will be a waste of money. I really want a smartphone but do you think they are right? Am I tool old? — Stuck on a Land Line Dear Land Line As a former professor of economics, the Answer Lady suggests you get in the car, drive up to Rio Grande and buy yourself a bloody smartphone. She is perplexed as to why you would even listen to the nonsensical, sexist babble of your son and husband. It’s really none of their business and you have earned the right to make your own decision regarding purchases which have no impact on them. Nor do you have to justify your actions. After you buy the phone, celebrate with dinner at Louisa’s and don’t forget to order dessert.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

nother September. Another autumn of hawk watching at Cape May Point State Park. For the next three months, the hawk watch platform at the park will be populated with residents and visitors raising their binoculars under hawk-filled skies. Since 1976, it’s been an annual tradition at the Raptor Capital of North America. Admission is free. The cadre of interpretive naturalists are sponsored by Swarovski Optik of North America who also have loaner instruments on hand in case visitors care to view the world with superior optics. September and October are prime time for osprey, falcons and accipiters like sharpshinned and Cooper’s hawk. Bald eagles are also a daily occurrence. Other species of birds are also appreciated. For example on my trip to the Hawk Watch September 7, a red-necked phalarope was swimming in Bunker Pond. This tundra-breeding shorebird winters at sea so land based observations this side of the tundra are few. Birds of Cape May County, New Jersey.

On this trip I got to meet this year’s superb crop of naturalists and greet perennial local hawk watchers who, like me, have been counting down the days to September. Why is hawk watching so addictive? I’ve tried to answer that question for years. Certainly the allure of raptors plays into it. There are few animal groups on the planet that humans look up to, but hawks, literally and figuratively, fall into this category. Hawk watching is more demanding than watching birds coming to your feeder.

It’s a big sky and while there is no place to hide it is amazing how a pastel colored hawk can simply melt into a blue sky. One deceased Cape May regular, a retired fireman from the Bronx, used to refer to a cloudless sky as “broad-winged blue.” As is my tradition I paid my respects to Walter by sitting in his old favored spot on the platform and then let my mind wander to engage those other spirits now specializing in dorsal views of the birds the once looked up to. Comrades like Dr Harold Axtel, Al Nicholson, Fred Mears, David Lord, Kate Breathwaite, Alan Brady. The stream of birds passing overhead is their enduring tribute and my link to them. This early in the season, visitors were mostly local. By month’s end , Swedish, Danish, German, French and English birders flock to Cape May to witness the miracle of migration that makes Cape May a familiar name on both sides of the Atlantic. So consider this your invitation to raise glasses under raptor-filled skies. Tell them Seymore sent you.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

Y

ou’ll never sit more on the edge of your seat at a movie where you’re sure you know the ending. In 2009, we all saw the picture of the survivors of the commercial airliner that made an emergency landing on the Hudson River moments after takeoff. The survivors stood on the wings of the plane as it floated. Sully is the latest film from director Clint Eastwood. Chelsey Sullenberger was the pilot who forced his plane into the river and saved the lives of all 155 on board. Tom Hanks plays Sullenberger. The film was based on the pilot’s book High Duty. You might ask, “How could they make a full movie out of this?” The plane landed safely, and the pilot was heralded as a hero. And rightfully so. For a few days the country was swept up in a positive story, one of the only such stories to come out of New York City in many years. “At least one that involved an airplane,” one airline union was quoted as saying. Hats off to director Clint Eastwood for not only making the story watchable — but making one of the most compelling movies you’ll see

Tom Hanks puts in another great performance this year. Heroes are made as they rise to challenges, true heroes as they rise against conflict. Little did I know Sullenberger faced a challenge to his heroic landing. How many of us can say we knew that the government would nearly denounce the pilot’s decision versus choosing to land at a nearby airport? The controversy is at the center of this film, and Eastwood expertly pairs it with a recreation of the landing that is equally as powerful.

Hanks’ portrayal of Sullenberger was as genuine as you can only guess his character is in real life. If you think Sullenberger was cool under the pressure of losing both plane engines to a flock of birds, you’ll marvel how he keeps his composure while working against a gaggle of bureaucrats. Aaron Eckhart plays Sully’s co-pilot Jeff Skiles, and three-time Oscar-nominated Laura Linney plays Sully’s wife. These two bring understated brilliance to their performances, along with the panel of investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board. Warning: You just want to collectively slap that panel for putting Sullenberger through the trial they did. You can feel Eastwood’s affection for these people and this story as he takes exceptional care to deliver an inspiring tribute to this remarkable hero. This is one of those films I will see again before it leaves theaters. Reminder: the 16th Annual Cape May Film Festival will be November 11-13! There have been several outstanding films submitted this year – it will be hard to choose! Stay tuned.
