Ramblings From The Editor

E

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

njoyed hanging out with some of Cape May’s young business people at beautiful Beach Plum Farm on Sunday night. A few times a year, myself and Curtis Bashaw arrange a get-together with the people who will hopefully be Cape May’s business leaders of tomorrow. Some of them already run their own shows, despite being in their 20s and early 30s, while others are firmly entrenched in well-known family businesses, presumably preparing to accept the baton when it’s handed over to them. What they all have in common is a desire to improve the quality of life in the city they call home. It’s often the case that the people who grow up in small resort towns cannot wait to leave once they’ve hit college age. Not for them the ho-hum existence of smalltown life. Or, as Jimmy Stewart put it in It’s A Wonderful Life (which ties with Jaws as my favorite movie of all time — not sure what that says about me): “I’m shaking the dust of this crummy little town off my feet and I’m gonna see the world!” (Or, at least, Philadelphia and New York.)

As most of you know, Jimmy Stewart’s character never does leave Bedford Falls. Instead he devotes himself to making a worthwhile life in that crummy little town before, ahem, trying to kill himself on Christmas Eve... I think you know the rest, and besides it’s just a little early to be chatting about Christmas movies. Given that I left the big city of New York as a thirtysomething person to create a new life for myself in our particular crummy little town, I feel validated when I look around and

see a group of young, vibrant, intelligent, committed people who want to make a life for themselves in Cape May. Because who wants to live in a retirement community? I remember when my parents moved into a sheltered housing complex in my home town of Paisley, Scotland. At the time they were in their 70s, and I asked them what it was like. “It’s great, but it’s so full of old people!” my mum complained. And it wasn’t a joke. I took her point. Cape May IS a great place to retire, no question about it, but it needs to offer a whole lot more than that. It needs to be a place where you can buy a home and bring up children without the need for a trust fund (assuming you weren’t lucky enough to inherit the family’s second home); the kind of place that continues to have its own hardware store (I think that is a reliable indicator of a proper yearround community, which is why I won’t ever go to Lowe’s or Home Depot if I can find what I need at Swain’s); the kind of place where you can enjoy a good beer or a good glass of wine and a good meal 12 months of the year, albeit

Page 14 with much less of a choice in the offseason; the kind of place where people can enjoy at least some level of culture without always having to head for the metropolis. Thanks to the efforts of this island’s business people, we already have all of the above, with the glaring exception being that it is NOT a place where young families can comfortably rear their children — there is zero stock of affordable housing on the island — apart from the odd “bargain” to be found in West Cape May, but they are few and far between and they need so much work that you’d be hitting Swain’s twice a day every day. How to combat this is a difficult challenge that needs a strong and committed partnership between the public and private sector. But it is a challenge that needs to be met if Cape May is to evolve into the kind of small town that I think every one of us would probably agree is the place of our dreams. I know... to many of us who live here (or who visit here and WANT to live here — and that’s a large number), it already IS the place of our dreams, with a few caveats. But complacency doesn’t usually bode well for communities. Which is why it’s so important to do things like engage tomorrow’s business leaders so that they know they have the support of each other and also, hopefully, of the city.

And The Last Word Goes To... Our Man Bird

The Beach Plum Farm meeting was also attended by all four candidates for the mayor/ council seats. They weren’t there to get on their soap box. Instead, Mayor Ed Mahaney, his challenger Chuck Lear and council candidates Tricia Hendricks and Zack Mullock were there to listen and to chat. Curtis Bashaw did his usual stellar job of

hosting and inspiring the group, urging them to come up with ideas to further boost Cape May’s claim to being a year-round community AND resort. I plan to be sharing some of those ideas with you in future Ramblings. As for all you young business types — see you at Exit Zero Cookhouse in December! Until next week...

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

am not a fan of debates. Or rather, I AM a fan of debates, but only for the purposes of entertainment. I think there is a place for reasoned argument, for sure: I was once a member of the English Parliament, and it was invigorating to see scores of grown men (this was before there were women permitted, save for nurses to mop up the blood and spittle) scream at each other until someone snapped and punched another gentleman right in the nose. More than once I found my powdered wig tipped off my head and my trust silver-topped walking cane employed to thrash the opposition. But I am not sure that, in the end, listening to anyone else’s point of view is useful. The thought came to mind when I stumbled across a televised encounter between a lady I at first thought was my Aunt Maude, and a peculiar orange fellow with a marmoset perched atop his head. I only saw it for the few seconds it took to wrest the remote control device from Young Albert’s jaws (he and my faithful manservant, Kitchener, were fighting over it, as Kitchener wanted

to watch The Great British Bakeoff and Albert was intent on a rerun of David Attenborough’s Planet Earth: he has an unhealthy fascination for those episodes where crocodiles eat wildebeast, and refuses to listen when I tell him that Yorkshire Terriers would be an amuse bouche in such a circumstance). I left Kitchener and Albert to fight it out on the rug, and immediately switched off those strange arguing people in favor of that most impressive of documentaries: Star Trek, The Next Generation. In this particular episode, I — I mean, Captain Picard: I confuse the two

of us, for obvious reasons — was forced to fix a crisis whilst his rotund second in command seduced another poor woman. I like Picard, though would wish he would say “Make it so!” more often. We used to have a plebiscite here in Cape May, where every citizen (a definition that included certain animals, though not lesser apes) would gather by the bandstand and important matters would be raised, such as: “Whatcha goin to do bout all these Irish?!” and a prolonged scuffle would take place. Obviously, nothing ever got done, as such, and so we eventually and quietly changed the system to a dictatorship, with the illusion of the individual opinions counting. So, every election cycle, we receive all of your votes, carefully count them and then just as carefully row the ballot boxes out to the Concrete Ship in the dead of night, to be sunk in the hold. Really, there are no actual decisions to be made that need more than my own quick appraisal. And though I admit to being harsh, I consider myself fair. Like Moses. But less bearded and dramatic. Or into plagues.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the classic car show

nce upon a time, a driver had an intimate relationship with the car. Cars were less reliable, and we were young and broke, so we had to be ready for car trouble. It seemed like everyone knew how to add coolant or jump start a battery or hold the carburetor open with a screwdriver after you flooded the engine — or after your friend did. I seem to remember that maneuver requiring two people. Drivers of unreliable cars knew what to look for when they popped the hood. We had to — no cellphones, remember? We didn’t have YouTube, so we learned by watching our parents and our friends fix their cars. I learned by watching my older brothers. Sitting on the side of the road, it was a tense lesson involving lots of cursing. At home in the driveway, it could be a lot of fun. One brother would be helping the other change a fan belt, and then another car would pull up, and another, and their friends would hang around long after the problem was fixed, with a transistor radio playing tinny pop tunes, or a boom box belt-

ing a carefully curated mix tape. After there was nothing left to tinker with, they’d drive around together, and make a whole other set of memories. Today’s young drivers see little more than a plastic cover when they pop the hood. They don’t know what they’re missing. That’s why car shows are so popular. People love to come and look at the cars they wish they had had when they were young. In Wildwood this week, the Boardwalk Classic Car Show brought in vintage cars, with nothing more recent than 1989. All had actual engines under the hood, and most had

owners eager to tell you how they keep them running. My brother Danny drives across five states to meet his friends in Wildwood every September, reminiscing about the cars of their youth, with their rusting floorboards and dangling headlights. They compare the shiny paint on show cars and remember the time it took them months to paint a Ford station wagon. That thing had an embarrassingly flat black primer coat for way too long. They forget that they are grandfathers who spend more time adjusting the baby seats in their cars than the engines. They eat pork roll that they shouldn’t eat, maybe surf a little if someone’s got a long board and the waves aren’t too rough, and they remember what it is to to be a Jersey guy. You can see classic cars in Cape May on October 1 at the Beachcomber Campground, where all exhibitors get a free tee shirt, breakfast, and lunch. Visitors get to vote on their favorite cars. The cars return to Wildwood for the Fabulous Fifties celebration October 14 and 15. Next week: Lima Bean Festival

Photographer Kathy Fallon’s gorgeous coffee table book is a love letter to the ocean and the beach. A Coastal Journey is filled with compelling, inspiring photography from Cape May, the Wildwoods and the Outer Banks.

Check out the Exit Zero

After a stubborn blue-collar carpenter turned down a famed Philadelphia publisher’s offer in the 1940s, his story of a shipwrecked sailor in Cape May lay forgetten in a closet for six decades before being brought to Exit Zero. THE CAPE tells the riveting tale of John McJack and the Lenni-Lenape indians of the Cape.

A beautifully illustrated children’s book that doubles as a perfect bluffer’s guide to the history of Cape May. IN THE LAND OF EXIT ZERO contains two dozen gorgeous images of the city’s most beloved landmarks, painted by Cape May-born artist Janelle DiLizio. Exit Zero’s Historical Editor Ben Miller provides commentary.

The illustrated history book so good that the Philadelphia Inquirer named it one of the 12 most beautiful coffee table books, THE FIRST RESORT is the book about Cape May that you definitely need to own.

This charming book, featuring illustrations of New Jersey’s lighthouses by renowned artist, Donna Elias, answers questions that many children ask: What IS a lighthouse? And why should we care? TO THE LIGHTHOUSE! is an essential keepsake for any child who is fascinated by the seas & those majestic sentinels that watch over them.

Photographer Kathy Fallon travels through some of America’s most beautiful beach territories — from Cape May County to the Outer Banks — and expertly trains her camera on the myriad scenes, shapes, lines & textures. A COASTAL JOURNEY is a treasure for anyone who loves the shore.

Just a few decades ago, Cape May was left battered by hurricanes and fires — a shadow of its former Victorian glory. A CAPE MAY STORY celebrates the 50-year evolution that helped shape the iconic seaside town, along with the family hotel, the Montreal Beach Resort, that was there for it all.

Want to know where to Eat, Shop, Stay & Play in Cool Cape May? This is the book you need for your coffee table or night stand. An unmissable concoction of advice and information, COOL CAPE MAY is the ultimate Cape May travel guide.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am one of three desk managers at the Historic Cape May Tennis Club. Here are some helpful points for Matchless [who felt compelled to rise at 6am to get a court time for her group]: 1. We open the club each morning at 6:00 (summer hours) and 7:00 (winter hours). 2. You need not be there to sign up for court time at these hours. 3. For a 9:30 or 10:00 start time, she or her friends can sign up at any time since there are many available courts for these time slots. At this time, with winter hours, the 9:30 start time is very popular. Try to sign up no later than 8:00am. The next time slot after 9:30 is at 11. If she or her friends have any questions please call us at 884-8986. — Robert Zevola

Wise answers to perplexing questions

Dear Robert The Answer Lady is thrilled you took the trouble to help Matchless get a match. Now that you have done so, reward yourself with a nice Oktoberfest Marzen at Cape May Brewery. And be sure to bring home a growler to enjoy when you are sitting at home thinking about your serve Dear Answer Lady I am a Presbyterian minister in a small Pennsylvania town and was thrilled when my niece announced her engagement. She is

getting married in October at the Cove Pavilion and I was sure she would ask me to officiate. When she chose a stranger to perform the ceremony, I was, and am, deeply offended. So far, I have kept silent but should I say something? I am still considering not going to the ceremony I feel so strongly about this. I suspect my brother, who has always been jealous of me, is at the bottom of it. — Shut Out Dear Shut Out The Answer Lady understands how your feelings have been hurt, but this is not about YOU and your baggage — and there seems to be a lot. It’s about your niece and her big day. She may have been hit with objections from the groom’s family. Maybe they have a minister they wanted to officiate. Maybe your brother is behind it. Or perhaps they wanted you to have a good time and not have to work for it. It really isn’t for you to judge. As to boycotting the wedding — put your ego in check. Relax. Get here a couple days early and enjoy the wineries. Cape May Winery is lovely in the shoulder season. And don’t create a scene. Remember your ministry.

Bird Droppings

W

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

e birders have a bad tendency to presume that when we speak about a bird, nonbirders have, at least, a basic familiarity. Take the bald eagle. Most Americans are familiar with our emblematic bird and would, given a decent view of the large, plank-winged bird of prey, recognize it. But how about peregrine, one of our three common falcon migrants. Forty years ago the North American population of this splendid bird was sliding toward extinction. About the size of a laughing gull, this celebrated speedster is the fastest animal on the planet, reaching speeds approaching 200 miles per hour. In September through October it is possible to see scores of migrating peregrines from Cape May Point Hawk Watch in one day. Most of our migrant population heralds from Greenland to the Yukon, a huge area. Rounding out the falcons are merlin and American kestrel. Merlins breed in boreal forest and winter mostly coastally from

Long Island to the Lesser Antilles. This birdcatching specialist is celebrated for its feisty, demeanor. About 4:00pm (Merlin time) the volume of migrating merlins and migrating dragonflies on good flight days combine to make dragonfly wings fall like gossamer tickertape. Conversely, American kestrel numbers are falling. Once the second most common raptor migrant in Cape May, this colorful falcon has declined steadily since the 1970s, possibly down to the loss of farmland

habitat. Yet kestrels are a daily occurrence in Cape May and as many as 500 might be counted given good migratory conditions. My wife Linda, who was once a hawk bander in Cape May, disparagingly calls kestrels “little bug eaters.” Her raptorial preference is for peregrines. The bills of falcons are designed for the quick decapitation of prey but kestrels are quick to turn their bills upon the cuticles of hawk trappers, whose bloodied hands attest to a successful day of trapping. Even as they are released, kestrels seem drawn to inflict one more bite. Sharp-shinneds and Cooper’s hawks are also common migrants. The sharp-shinned ranks as Cape May’s most abundant raptor migrant, with single day tallies sometimes approaching 1,000. As woodland specialists, sharpies and coops have more rounded wings than falcons and telling the species apart can be challenging even for experienced observers. More about the remaining raptor migrants next week. See you on the hawk watch platform.

arion Froud is a charming and beautiful artist who has painted portraits of leaders from around the world — and broken a few hearts along the way. At her Manhattan studio, she has many visitors: composer and longtime friend Melchior Feydak, long- lost sweetheart Leander Nolan, eccentric actor Warwick Wilson, and the mysterious Richard Kurt, who offers her a business proposition. Ericka Amato plays Marion in East Lynne Theater’s Biography, setting the mood for the entire production with a remarkable portrayal. As well as Amato, other ELTC firsttimers are: Mike Newman, who plays the idealist Kurt; Veronique Hurley as Nolan’s vivacious fiancé; and R. Scott Williams plays Feydak, who takes advantage of mistaken identity. All give outstanding performances. Familiar faces include Tom Byrn as the conflicted Nolan; John Cameron Weber as Nolan’s boisterous father-in-law; Mark Edward Lang, who lights the stage as Wilson; and Gayle Stahlhuth, who ensures maximum

Disgraced runs at Cape May Stage thru October 14 comic relief as Marion’s assistant, Minnie. This play opened on Broadway in 1932, with S.N. Behrman (1893-1973) the playwright. Eighty-four years later, audiences have laugh-out-loud fun with scenes bordering on madcap farce. Thanks to Amato, we are completely enamored with Marion, the heroine from another era truly fitting for our times. Visit eastlynnetheater.org for more info. Disgraced at Cape May Stage What we think about being Muslim, Jewish,

white or black is under the microscope as five very different people simmer below the surface and then erupt violently at the most civilized of events — an intimate dinner party. Amir, played by Rav Val Denegro, introduces us to his inner turmoil within the first few minutes — he’s a pressure cooker of dichotomy destined to go off. Katie Zaffrann plays Emily, his wife, enamored with the beauty of Islamic culture as Amir tries to show her an uglier side. Joshua Salvador (Abe) goes through a physically astounding transformation from typical American college student to Islamic fundamentalist. Marc Geller (Isaac) is politically incorrect as he tells the truth as he sees it. Bliss Griffin (Jory) is ultimately a lightning rod for all that Amir holds back. The set is realistic down to the parquet flooring, as authentic a New York apartment as you’ll ever find outside the city. This play is powerfully acted, telling a story of not only stereotypes and beliefs but also self-denial and self-betrayal. Cape May Stage at its best. Visit capemaystage.org for more info.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

SHAUNA is a shy little lady who was one of many from a hoarder house. She was constantly getting lost in the crowd. Shauna has never had a home or someone to care for her in her entire life. Now she has a clean bed, toys and gets fed regularly. But she is patiently waiting for the next step, a home. Give Shauna a chance and adopt today!

YSOBEL has a unique calico coat and is one of six! There is nothing ordinary about this little lady. Not her looks, not her name and not her hugs. Ysobel loves being brushed and held. She also loves to show off her hunting skills with the jingly thing attached to a stick. If you would like to meet her she will be at the Rio Grande PetSmart!

PANTHER lived in a home for three and a half years but had some issues with the other cats living in the house. But don’t get the wrong idea, Panther woud make the perfect pet if he were the only animal living in the house. That way he gets all the love and attention! Let Panther run free again and adopt today!
