Ramblings From The Editor

G

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

reetings from sunny California, where I’ve been thinking about pumpkins, community spirit and the end of the world. Pumpkins are everywhere here — at least in northern California, where we enjoyed one of the world’s great drives, from San Francisco to Big Sur. The first time I did it was 20 years ago and it still blows the mind. The routes through the Highlands of my home country of Scotland are spectacular, but that stretch of California Route 1 has it beaten. Can’t deny there are a few flips in my stomach when I take a bend where there is no guard rail to stop you from plummeting a few hundred feet into the ocean, but that only adds to the spectacle. On the road to the beautiful little city of Carmel, we stopped off in Half Moon Bay, which has to be one of the coolest names around. As well as having some excellent stores, it was clear that Half Moon Bay has a business community that acts together. Everywhere we looked there were nicely designed signs and flags promoting their

Arts and Pumpkins Festival. There were, in fact, pumpkins everywhere — in store windows, on street corners and on specially designed bottles of wine, bearing the Arts and Pumpkins Festival logo, on the shelves of liquor stores. And there were thousands on display at farms where families would go to pick their own, and take part in activities based around the iconic member of the cucurbitaceae family, which also includes gourds and squash. Why do we love pumpkins so much? I

mean, pumpkin pie gets its flavor from cinnamon, ginger and cloves and anything else you add in there. Pumpkins are more ornament than food stuff. Maybe it’s the color that sums up the glorious burst of fall. Or maybe it’s the jack-o-lanterns that remind us of nostalgic Halloween nights. Who knows, but I think Cape May should do a lot more with them. We have a few farms that grow them and having a citywide pumpkin festival is an idea we should seriously consider. Half Moon Bay is a place that works together and it reminded me of how Cape May needs to improve in that area. A few years ago, Mayor Ed Mahaney and City Manager Bruce MacLeod nixed an idea put forward by Michael Kline, founder of Exit Zero Jazz Festival. He wanted to operate a street festival, with food and drink from local businesses, and jazz musicians playing. Proceeds would benefit the festival. It never happened. But a couple years later, the city organized its own seafood festival, erecting large tents in front of

Page 14 Convention Hall. It was an ambitious event. Trouble was that they forgot to tell anyone. People were on Facebook a day before the festival asking why big tents were being erected on Beach Avenue and why the roads were being closed off. It was an example of City Hall at its worst — stop a local entrepreneur from doing something cool, steal their idea and then organize an event without telling the community. There were restaurants around that area which lost a lot of money that day because of the festival. It was exactly how a tourist town (or any town) should operate. Half Moon Bay showed a community in perfect synchronization, with everyone pulling together. I hope we can get to that place. But at least we have water... I’ve been to California quite a few times and it’s a different color from what I remember. Everywhere we drove, brown hills surrounded us where once many were green. I get that the state has battled with drought from its earliest days, but I think those of us with our brains switched on will realize that global warming is having its way with the Golden State. Personally, I’ve never taken water for granted — I chastise anyone who brushes their teeth while the faucet runs merrily

away, and I wish restaurants would stop refilling water glasses without asking... throwing water down the drain is a sin. Speaking of pumpkins, we will have jack-o-lanterns at a West Cape May Christmas Parade fundraiser at Exit Zero Cookhouse on Wednesday, October 26. There will be a scary music backdrop, serv-

ers in costume, and scary hot spices in our curries — but worry not, there will also be mild curries and non-curries on the menu. Tickets are just $20 for a three-course meal. We will be seating people from 5-8pm. We recommend reservations – call us on 609-770-8479. I will be your scary host – look forward to seeing you.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

abhor wasted space. It’s why I was the chief architect of the soon-to-beenacted law making it illegal for people to own a home in Cape May unless they live here 242 days every year. I myself first moved to remedy The D’Catur Mansion’s terrible emptiness in WWII, when I brought a hundred Cockney child evacuees over. Why Cockney’s, you ask? I have always had a soft spot for those cheery rhyming scallywags. And can you imagine my delight when Dick Van Dyke portrayed one in that documentary, Mary Poppins? I nearly fell down the apples and pears! So anyways, when I was asked to assist and keep the children save from the Nazis, offering them a home here for the duration of the war was the least I could do! (The most I could do being what I actually did, which is to parachute into Berlin and give Adolph a good thrashing). I must say, they had a truly wonderful time, though I confess I am not totally certain that exactly 100 returned in 1945: I do recall a couple of adventurous tykes who picked the locks to the basement

and after having a good look around late one night, peacefully left for a new, healthy and trouble-free life in Ocean City. They totally did not start up the time machine, set the dial to 1845 and there, under the direction of the oldest, a remarkably smart young blade with piercing green eyes and a strong jawline, use their modern-day knowledge to found a grand family dynasty at the tip of New Jersey. And of course there were those three scamps who seemingly tunneled their way through the back of a wardrobe up on the top floor and were never seen again, though

our search was called off when that damn strange talking lion appeared in Cape May, and there was some notion he may have eaten them. Either way, the rascal ended up stuffed and mounted in the mansion’s east wing. He is frozen in mid-stride, the phrase “I say, old chap, steady there…” forever on his lips. But on the whole, the had the best time ever, and those of my household staff who did not expire from exhaustion, or from any of the communicable diseases London urchins carried in those days, were all the better from the experience. In fact, the new cinematic marvel, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, was based on their experiences here! Obviously, we did not have a child with teeth on the back of their head, or bandage-wrapped twins. I think there was an invisible child though perhaps they actually just vanished. But back to the new law, I hear you shrill? Well, yes, as of January 2017 every home not occupied two thirds of the year will be given over to troublesome Cockneys. Or Wildwooders of any age and temperament.

T

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, a bounty of good food

here’s a lot to do in Cape May, but in the height of the summer, we often choose to do nothing. If you start the day at the beach, it’s easy to forget that there is any reason to leave. Before you know it, the lifeguards are packing up and it’s time to think about dinner. There’s time enough to do things when summer ends. It’s an open secret that fall at the shore is a beautiful thing. The humidity is gone, the sky is a crisp blue, and the crowds are manageable. You can wear the navy sweater you took out in May. You can take down your ponytail. You can hold hands without sweating like a teenager. Your favorite places may be reducing hours, but they are mostly open, and you can get a reservation. You can finally do the things you thought about doing while you rested on your beach towel. It’s the most wonderful time of the year. Climb the lighthouse without panting. Visit the zoo when the animals are cool and frisky. Celebrate Cape May’s farming heritage on October 8 at the Lima Bean Festival

in West Cape May. The “lowly legume” will be featured in all sorts of products, from 9am to 5pm at Wilbraham Park. Rain date is October 9. Or check out the Fall at the Farm celebration at Beach Plum Farm from 11 to 4, featuring hay rides, music, food and beer from Cape May Brewery. On Thursdays in October, try Boo and Brew at Historic Cold Spring Village. Start at the Cold Spring Brewery, and then join a 45-minute walking tour highlighting the Village’s paranormal “visitors.” Tickets are $15 and tours begin at the gatehouse on Route 9. Call (609) 898-

2300 for tickets and information. Visit the Aviation Museum at Naval Air Station Wildwood on October 8 and 9 for the Cape May Wine and Food Experience. The Garden State Wine Growers Association returns with wine sampling, chef demonstrations, music and more. Presenters include Chopped winner Erick Weatherspool and Diane Henderiks, a culinary nutritionist and cookbook author whose work on healthy, tasty meals has been featured by The Chew, CBS This Morning, and Shape magazine. There will be a craft area for children. Tickets are $30 for drinkers, who will be given a wine glass and wristband and encouraged to sample. Admission for non-drinkers is $5. People under age 21 are free. Two-day passes are available. You can buy food there, or bring your own food, but no outside alcohol is permitted — they will be checking. Wines will be available for purchase by the bottle and the case. Gates open each day at 11:30 and wine sales end at 5. Visit newjerseywines.com for more information. Next week: Deadly Women

Photographer Kathy Fallon’s gorgeous coffee table book is a love letter to the ocean and the beach. A Coastal Journey is filled with compelling, inspiring photography from Cape May, the Wildwoods and the Outer Banks.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am one of three desk managers at the Historic Cape May Tennis Club. Here are some helpful points for Matchless [who felt compelled to rise at 6am to get a court time for her group]: 1. We open the club each morning at 6:00 (summer hours) and 7:00 (winter hours). 2. You need not be there to sign up for court time at these hours. 3. For a 9:30 or 10:00 start time, she or her friends can sign up at any time since there are many available courts for these time slots. At this time, with winter hours, the 9:30 start time is very popular. Try to sign up no later than 8:00am. The next time slot after 9:30 is at 11. If she or her friends have any questions please call us at 884-8986. — Robert Zevola

Wise answers to perplexing questions

Dear Robert The Answer Lady is thrilled you took the trouble to help Matchless get a match. Now that you have done so, reward yourself with a nice Oktoberfest Marzen at Cape May Brewery. And be sure to bring home a growler to enjoy when you are sitting at home thinking about your serve Dear Answer Lady I am a Presbyterian minister in a small Pennsylvania town and was thrilled when my niece announced her engagement. She is

getting married in October at the Cove Pavilion and I was sure she would ask me to officiate. When she chose a stranger to perform the ceremony, I was, and am, deeply offended. So far, I have kept silent but should I say something? I am still considering not going to the ceremony I feel so strongly about this. I suspect my brother, who has always been jealous of me, is at the bottom of it. — Shut Out Dear Shut Out The Answer Lady understands how your feelings have been hurt, but this is not about YOU and your baggage — and there seems to be a lot. It’s about your niece and her big day. She may have been hit with objections from the groom’s family. Maybe they have a minister they wanted to officiate. Maybe your brother is behind it. Or perhaps they wanted you to have a good time and not have to work for it. It really isn’t for you to judge. As to boycotting the wedding — put your ego in check. Relax. Get here a couple days early and enjoy the wineries. Cape May Winery is lovely in the shoulder season. And don’t create a scene. Remember your ministry.

Bird Droppings

here are two common raptor migrants that fall outside the groupings of falcons, buteos and accipiters. These are northern harrier and osprey. Northern harrier is a lanky, ground-hugging mouser, distinguished by long, narrow wings and long tail, and the only member of the genus to breed in North America. Cinnamon-tinged juveniles migrate August through November, while tawny adult females occur mostly in October. Ghostly pale adult males are most common in November. Osprey is the sole representative of the family pandonidae and may be seen from Cape May Point Hawk Watch as late as November, though the bulk of migration occurs August through October. These large, boldly patterned fish-eating raptors fly with a gull-like, droop-winged configuration, but the wing tips show slotted feathers. Buteos are a diverse group of large, soaring raptors. In Cape May we’ll tally broadwinged hawk, a mostly October migrant. Also common are red-shouldered hawk, a

paddle-winged, mostly forest-dwelling raptor, and the burly red-tailed hawk, an opencountry rodent specialist. Late October through early December is peak migration time for buteos. Two other species warrant mention: rough-legged hawk and Swainson’s. Swainsons are found mostly in the prairies but one or two wander into our region every autumn. Rough-leggeds are Arctic breeders that winter mostly south of areas covered by winter snow. For unknown reasons rough-legged

numbers have been declining along our coastal marshes. Speculation is that climate change and diminished snowpacks compel birds to winter farther north than they did. Ornithologist John Krider, a gunmaker in Philadelphia, writing in the late 1800s, observed that both the light morph and dark morph were common winter residents in the marshes south of the city. Now it is a rare winter when even one bird of either color morph is found in the marshes of Delaware Bay. In October and November, the bird everyone hopes to see is the lordly golden eagle. Much less common than bald eagle, these iconic raptors pass through as they vacate breeding areas in eastern Canada enroute to wintering areas in Kentucky and Tennessee. A few may remain in the region, attracted to the wealth of wintering waterfowl New Jersey hosts. Speaking of bald eagles, our nation’s emblamatic bird is seen almost daily at the hawk watch. Days with lots of sunshine and strong northwest winds are best. Eagles like to soar and the winds ferry them down the peninsula.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

O

ne of the best movies so far this year! There, I’ve said it now. I never started a review with that line, but I wanted you to see it up front. Hell or High Water follows a relatively short-lived career of two bank robbers in western Texas, and the Rangers trying to track them down. These robbers are not common, and neither are the Rangers. How can a film be intense, engaging, gritty, and social commentary all at once? Watch to find out. The trail the robbers are leaving behind is not typical. They target small banks and take only small bills (nothing that can be traced), which means they don’t make a lot of money at one time. Yet they are not small time hoods _ it’s not like they’re ripping off convenience stores for a couple hundred. Chris Pine and Ben Foster are the robbers (and brothers). Jeff Bridges and Gil Birmingham are the law. This is not strictly shoot ‘em up — not gratuitously anyway. Oh there is blood, but the storyline takes the high road and the brothers have deeper

Complex and compelling: Hell or High Water motives. From the start, there is a commentary in this film on how the poor are kept poor by the wealthy. There are signs of poverty all around (and by signs I don’t mean abstract meaning but actual signs, billboards that read “Get Out of Debt” or “Fast Cash”). Will town folk witnesses give the brothers up when asked? Bridges questions a group of old men about how long they’ve been at a diner with a clear view of the bank

that was just robbed across the street. One guy says, “Long enough to watch a bank getting robbed that’s been robbing me for thirty years.” And when Bridges confronts the server who got a $200 tip from Pine — well don’t think she’s going to give up that tip easily. Katy Mixon plays the server brilliantly. “All of this was my ancestor’s land till these folks took it,” says Bridges’ partner, a Native American played by Birmingham, referring to white settlers. “And now it’s been taken from them,” he adds. “Except it ain’t no army doing it. It’s those sons of b** right there,” he points to the bank they’re staking out. Pine’s character is working to make a better life for his kids. “I’ve been poor my whole life,” he says. “It’s like a disease — passing from generation to generation.” The gap between rich and poor, big business and struggling families permeates the film. Ultimately, you’ll laugh and gasp — but you’ll struggle in who to root for. Like life, this movie is compelling and complex like that.
