Ramblings From The Editor

A

Ideas, idle gossip, and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

couple weeks ago I talked about the charming little town of Half Moon Bay, a 45-minute drive south of San Francisco, where local businesses and politicians seem to work really well together to promote events. I said that this community-wide spirit of co-operation is something that should happen much more in our own charming little city by the sea. The truth is it doesn’t happen enough — although one notable exception is the West Cape May Christmas Parade. This event has been going on as long as I have been alive — and that’s a long time. Fifty-one years, to be precise. The reason it has endured is two-fold — the determination and resourcefulness of the late Charlotte Daily, aka The Parade Lady, and the willingness of the community to make the contributions necessary to keep it going — and it ain’t cheap. I believe it costs around $30,000 for the whole shebang. As a result, this island has a holidays event that has reached iconic status, something that draws people from near and far.

And yes, I know a lot of you think that three hours is way too long and that there’s too large of a gap between the attractions, but that’s okay — it just gives you more time to hang out with friends and family. A couple of years ago, I attended the Stone Harbor parade and it was almost hilariously efficient. As soon as Santa appeared (which was about an hour after the parade began), the cops and volunteers moved in and rolled everything up. Very soon after, you wouldn’t even have guessed a parade had taken place. That’s not the case

with this island’s parade. It’s an event! In Charlotte’s absence, much of the slack has been taken up by West Cape May Mayor Pam Kaithern, who rattles the cages and beats the bushes in order to raise the necessary money. The Chalfonte Hotel has already contributed from a sellout dinner recently, and next up is our contribution... We’re calling it a Spookily Great Night of Eating. This coming Wednesday, October 26, Exit Zero Cookhouse will be bathed in Halloween decorations, our staff will be in costume (including me, your host for the night). There will be jack-o-lanterns and scary music — everything from Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” to the theme tunes from Jaws, The Exorcist and Halloween — and lots more in between. In keeping with the theme, we will have our very scary curry, the Kraken, which is delicious but way too hot for me. It’s already been acclaimed by Craig LaBan of the Philadelphia Inquirer as a a “truly odd but defyingly great shrimp curry.” I can agree with that sentiment (especially the “great” part). For those of you

Page 14 who don’t like the heat, there are some great non-curry options, so worry not. The point is... come support your community and a great event — and have a really good time while you’re at it. It’s just $20 for a three-course meal, which is at least a third off our regular prices. And every single cent we collect that night will go to the parade. We already have 50 reservations on the book, so help us pack the place out. Call 609-770-8479 to make your reservations. See you there! Speaking of great causes, the annual Soleman run is happening on November 12. This event, a 5k run, was initiated by Betsy Sole as a tribute to her husband, the late, lamented Gene Sole. So far it has raised more than $30,000 for local scholarships in the last five years, which is fantastic. There are few better local beneficiaries of fundraising than local scholarships. This year’s event will begin at Convention Hall. Bring along a canned good for the local food pantry and you’ll get a cup of coffee to warm you up before the run. For more information, visit solemanrun.com. Looks like the clock is ticking for a much-loved local landmark. next to the lighthouse that they have owned for more than a century. “As we engage in both demographic and financial planning, we believe it is necessary for us to plan for the divestment of this property,” the congregation said in a statement. Their plan? Not to sell to the highest bidder. Instead, they would love to see the land

“returning it to nature.” What that means is uncertain, but it could open the way for a public park in this very special part of the island. Nope... didn’t talk about politics this week. I’m sure the last week has left you you as sick of listening to politicians as I am. But we’ll be back next week with a discussion of some of the issues. Until then...

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

do not hate or fear clowns as much as most people. I never met a clown who was able to scare me enough that I could not deliver a sound thrashing with my silver-topped walking cane. But let me stress that this treatment was not meted out to passive and mildly amusing clowns. Those jolly fellows with their long shoes and rotating bow ties and teary faces always made me laugh, though not uproariously, as, say, the sight of someone being run over by a steamroller. But I am not really very clear on this killer clown trend I am reading about. Also, I am assuming it will be a short-lived one in every sense, given this nation’s attitudes to ownership of firearms and their place in solving disputes. Unless of course we are seeing actual outbreak of supernatural beings, as tends to happen regularly here in Cape May. In which case, as you will all know (from watching those charmless Winchester boys in the televisual documentary series Supernatural) they cannot be dispatched by

means of regular weapons, needing instead salt and usually some arcane symbols thrown around. In the D’Catur Mansion basement we do have a permanent collection of spooks in old mason jars. They were captured my myself over the years and will reside in the basement forever, for the benefit of humankind. Well, I say “forever”: I suspect that will depend on Mrs Miggins the cleaner, whose hand is less steady than before and who careers around dusting the shelves down there with what can at best be called “enthusiasm”.

But with All Hallow’s Eve (do NOT call it Halloween!) coming up, I fear we will see our share of killer clowns both real and fake, and we should prepare as best we can for that. I suggest a combination of amusing comedy inf latable giant hammers and stout shoes (ideally leather-soled chestnut brogues) dusted in salt. The former will make a delightful “peep” noise when hitting someone and the latter will deliver an excorcism and a good old fashioned kicking. Not to mention being just the very thing for sprinting away on should you find yourself tackling a bogey man. Actually, that will serve you well on a daily basis, too, in case on your travels you should chance upon Jehovah’s Witnesses, Wildwoodians or a straggling Shoebie. I find in life that a stout pair of “smart but deadly” dress shoes should be in every man and woman’s wardrobe. I myself have a dozen such pairs, including my titanium tipped deck shoes (lethal but not so heavy a chap will drown if a kick sends him overboard).

The Activity Column

I

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the allure of local drama

f you need an escape from the absurd show playing out on cable news, take in a play. Theater is an ancient art, which probably stemmed from an innate need to mock the mighty and elevate the powerless. Perhaps it was a battle among tribal chieftains that first prompted an ancient human to stand in the spotlight of a community fire. The audience likely welcomed the distraction from their version of an election, or from whatever passed for mundane worries in the ancient world. According to paintings in the Chauvet Cave in France, people as far back as the Ice Age gathered for “paleotheater.” In Shang Dynasty China, around 1600 BCE, mimes and musicians entertained their friends. A Greek priest named Thespis is the first actor to get billing. He performed in honor of the god Dionysus. Standing on a platform on an Athenian hillside in 534 BCE, Thespis took the bold step of interacting with the chorus, thereby inventing dialogue. All these centuries later, we still turn to theater to make sense of a senseless world, or to give our-

selves something profound to think about. In those morning minutes before the alarm goes off, as you lay in bed wiggling your toes and hoping in vain that the dog will take herself around to your spouse’s side of the bed just this once, it’s nice to remember the show you saw last night. Cape May is rich in theater options. At Cape May Stage, Alex, a struggling thespian finds a job and a home with a “beloved megastar” in Jonathan Tolins’ Buyer and Cellar. This comedy explores the “price of fame” and the “oddest of odd jobs”. Roy Steinberg directs. Buyer and Cellar runs through November 18. Tickets are $38, with discounts for students and active duty military. Visit capemay-

stage.org for info. Elaine’s Dinner Theater presents Sherlock Holmes and the Werewolf of London. Is there really a werewolf stalking the citizens of London? Sherlock will need all of his powers of observation and the help of his friend Dr. Watson to get to the bottom of things. Tickets, including dinner, are $49.95 for adults, $39.95 for teens, and $29.95 for children 12 and under. Seating at 7:30. Ask about matinees. Reservations are highly recommended. Call (609) 884-1199 or visit the website at elaine’scapemay.com. Preview the menu to prove to the kiddies that they won’t go hungry. Get into the Halloween mood over at the East Lynne Theater Company on October 22. Popular actors from the company present Poe by Candlelight, stories by the “master of the macabre,” Edgar Allan Poe. Refreshments will be served. Tickets are $12, and children under 12 are free. Showtime is 8pm. On November 4 and 5, the Adventures of Detective Holmes and Carter return for the eleventh year.

Cape May Council

Growing up in Cape May taught me about small-town manners. If elected, I would seek to bring people together by focusing on the many issues that unite us instead of belaboring the issues that divide us. The people of Cape May deserve leaders who are focused on working for them, not against each other, and are willing to set real goals to move forward. In college, I served as class president and co-captain of the ice hockey team. It was a small Division 1 school where everyone knew everyone. I was proud to have those leadership roles and was elected to those roles by my peers because I was seen as friendly, fair and respectful, while never being afraid to voice a strong opinion on issues I thought to be important and on changes that needed to be made. I disagreed with many people along the way but I learned important lessons. We can disagree without resorting to hostility and strife. We can be respectful and civil while expressing independent views.

HERE ARE SOME OF MY GOALS... Conservation and Preservation Not only maintain, but grow, preservation initiatives. And continue to promote our history. Parking Plan Developed by elected officials and publicprivate partnerships. We should consider the future of driverless cars – we need leaders who understand technology. Attracting Families Provide incentives to attract families, and look at making the Cape Island Grade School K-8 one of the best in the country. Beach Safety This is not a new issue – my family and I have been active in helping those with injuries for 10-plus years. We are lucky to have a community willing to expend the time and

effort necessary to find solutions. We need to empower the beach safety commission.

Convention Hall. It could be a bath house, with retail space to help fund the project.

Storm Surge Protection We should be a shining example to other seaside towns by how prepared we are for the changing environment. We need a 25-year plan.

Community Center The Franklin Street school could be part of a long-term solution. We need a center.

Extend the Promenade & Seawall Expand the promenade on the east side, while adding storm protection through grants. Trash Collection Trash collection companies should pick up on the same day as recycling. It will improve our appearances and simplify life for home owners. Underused Space Replace the trailer-style bathroom in front of Angelo’s and rehabilitate the building next to

Bike Safety/Support We should have a plan for connecting into the planned bike path which will go from the lighthouse all the way to the county zoo. Six More Weeks of Summer Create an event much like Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney Pa. We should OWN summer. Each year, with a dolphin as the centerpiece of our campaign, we should proclaim six more weeks of summer! For more details... see my Facebook page MULLOCK FOR COUNCIL

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am a chef at a restaurant in Atlantic City. My baby brother is getting married and asked me to cater the wedding. Then his fiancé got into planning the menu and wanted expensive and difficult dishes. When I refused and gave her an alternative menu, she made it a first-class family drama. I simply couldn’t acquiesce. Making gourmet dishes for 12 and making them for 150 is a whole other level of effort. She has since fired me and is bringing in a taco truck. We went from lobster entrées and lamb lollipop apps to tacos in lightning speed. What do I do on the wedding day? – Chef Boy R We Screwed Dear Chef Simple. You sit back and enjoy the day.

Wise answers to perplexing questions

It’s a win-win. No one will be comparing your cooking to the taco truck. Give the bride a big kiss and welcome her to the family. The Answer Lady suspects your soon-to-be sister-in-law discovered how much money it was going to cost to get a caterer offering up lobster and lamb and realized too late how generous you offer was. As part of your wedding present, perhaps you should include gift certificates from The Lobster House and The Ebbitt Room. That way she can have her lobster and tacos, too.

Dear Answer Lady I am a bridesmaid in a wedding which is just around the corner and I am at my wit’s end. I’ve had my dress for weeks and yesterday tried it on. When I saw that it was much snugger than when I picked it up, I immediately went to the scale. I gained five pounds. What if I gain even more weight? I have had problems with bulimia in the past and now I find myself eyeing the Ex-Lax again. I so don’t want to start down that road again. What should I do? — Poor Fit Dear Fit Five pounds is nothing. Take the dress to a seamstress and she’ll be able to make some small adjustments. Do watch your diet but, more importantly, stop stressing about this. It isn’t worth it. Bridesmaids’ dresses have always been a horror. Keep in mind — the bride is the star here. Meanwhile, you need an ego boost. Go to Pink and/or Seaweeds and pick something pretty and flattering. Go back home. Put the new frock on — look in the mirror and say to yourself three times, “I’m pretty, oh so pretty inside and out.”

Bird Droppings

ctober is a bittersweet month. Yes, Cape May is treated to an avalanche of exciting migrating birds, and arriving winter residents — but it’s also the month the last of our summer residents depart. Take purple martins, the large social swallow whose burbles, chirps and trills have been part of the audio landscape since April. Won’t be heard or seen here until next spring. Laughing gulls? Now streaming south. Cape May beaches are just not the same without them. For the next five months the gull lineup will be limited to ring-billed, herring, great black-backed and lesser blackbacked. Yes, I missed Bonaparte’s. But these delicate Arctic nesters don’t commonly join the lineup of gulls on the beach. They hover and spin in the chop beyond the breakers. Second Avenue Jetty is a great spot to see them and a good place to view red-throated loons, another Arctic breeder that winters here. But this column is a lament to the birds

that don’t winter here — house wrens, indigo buntings, whip-poor-wills. Those summer breeders that do stay, so called year-rounders, grow furtive or don toned-down plumage like American goldfinch. Goldfinch, by the way, like thistle and black oil sunflower seed. Closely related to goldfinch, siskins may be here in numbers this winter — so stockpile thistle seed. I anticipate lots of siskin because it’s been a good year for migrating red-breasted nuthatch. Red-breasteds are

often the advance guard heralding a winter blessed by large numbers of “winter finch.” You might want to bulk up on sunflower seed, too. Purple finch love black oil sun, as do cardinals and jays. Attracting a male cardinal to your yard is sure to brighten a winter day. Cardinals like large, open platforms and shun crowds. The reason is survival. If a hunting sharpshinned hawk makes a pass at your feeder, the bright red bird is easy to target in the frenzy of wings. So cardinals feed early and late before the hawk-attracting crowds gather. When should you start feeding birds for the winter? Now. Migrating white-throated sparrows and prospecting winter finch will be searching for that bird-friendly yard through November. Talk to Brian Moscatello at Cape May Bird Observatory about feeding tips and feeders that are easy to fill and maintain. Me? I like a bird-filled yard on snowy mornings. Gladdens the heart, As for marauding sharp-shinned hawks, I consider them one more bird coming to the feeder, as welcome as any other feathered minion.

The Movie Column

T

By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

here are scars of racism in our history which we can hardly say — reading today’s headlines — have healed. And if you think I’m talking exclusively about slavery, you’re wrong. A new film called Birth of a Nation tells the story of Nat Turner, an enslaved preacher from the early 1800s. He traveled to plantations throughout his county, forced to preach to slaves in the hope of settling any possible uprisings. His job was gut-wrenching as he twisted passages from the Bible to encourage tolerance of abuse that can only be described as crimes against humanity. After seeing the worst owners can do, Turner sees how he can lead his people in a different direction — namely, insurrection. The scene of Turner saying grace before white dinner guests at his owner’s house is the most powerful you’ll see on film this year. Based on a true story, the rebellion was very bloody but short-lived. Turner is played by Nate Parker, a relative newcomer, who also co-wrote and directed (this is his feature film directorial debut). The film was picked up by

Don’t miss Birth of a Nation Fox Searchlight at the Sundance Film Festival for a record-breaking $17.5 million. So what are the other scars? The film takes its name from a movie released a century ago. That version is said to have made history in modern filmmaking — when it really only incited bigotry and murder. Back then, director and United Artists co-founder D.W. Griffith was called the Inventor of Hollywood. He was also a hatemonger. So what did Hollywood do? They created a lifetime

achievement award after his death around 1950. How long did it take for them to see the error of naming a bigot as an exalted visionary? Nearly 50 years later, they took his name off the award. The original Birth of a Nation generated millions of dollars, setting new records. The film depicted African Americans as evil and the Ku Klux Klan as heroes. Membership in the Klan back then was dwindling to low figures. After the film, enrollment shot up to millions, the highest it had ever been. And was Hollywood ashamed? Quite the contrary, it was ecstatic to hit such profits and gave Griffith high honors. See the new Birth of a Nation because you can’t always turn away from the evil side of American history. See it because you can’t ignore the dark side of Hollywood. And I’m not just talking about the seedy, “can’t believe how many nuts there are in this business” side. I’m talking about the “can’t believe how ignorant we were up until very recently” side. Lastly, see it in hopes that these scars may some day heal.

CLIENT TESTIMONIAL... “Richard Parker has excellent knowledge of Cape May and the surrounding area. He worked diligently with us to find the home we wanted. Rich worked the entire weekend showing my wife and I houses. Since we came in from Cincinnati for the weekend we wanted to maximize the time we had searching for homes. Rich had all the houses mapped out for each day. He never once pressured us to pursue any of the houses he showed us. But when we found the house we wanted he worked tirelessly with the seller to complete the sale. My wife and I have the greatest respect for Rich. He is a true professional.” - Zillow Review
