Ramblings From The Editor
A
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
s I write, Cape May (and America) is on tenterhooks, awaiting the results of both the mayoral and presidential election. Well, there’s not much we can do about it now, other than to hope for nothing but good things for our city and our country. Me? I’m off to watch the results with some friends, one of whom is called Johnnie Walker Black. As far as Cape May goes, I hope that by the time you are reading this Chuck Lear will be have been named the new mayor. As for the White House, all I will say, as a recently minted US citizen, is that I hope I have a more inspiring choice four years from now. But that’s enough politics for now (and hopefully a long time). This weekend we see the return of the fabulous Exit Zero Jazz Festival, headlined by the truly world-class Wynton Marsalis. He will be playing at the Paul Schmidtchen Theater at Lower Cape May Regional High School on Saturday night. Marsalis is a jazz legend, a man who knows the classics inside and out. If you’re a jazz fan, you don’t need me to tell you any
more. If your tastes are not 100% jazz, there is nothing to worry about — the beauty of this festival is that producer Michael Kline curates a lineup that is wonderfully eclectic. Go into Carney’s or Cabanas on Friday or Saturday night or Sunday afternoon and you will see what I mean. Those places are always party central during jazz festival. This Friday night, Davina and the Vagabonds will once again be bringing down the house at Carney’s (don’t miss this one), followed on Saturday night by the High and
Mighty Brass Band and Jessy Carolina and the Hot Mess (what could possibly be bad about a band with such a name?). Cabanas will be hosting the Philadelphia Funk Authority on Friday night, with the fantastic Red Baraat on Saturday. And then there’s the ridiculously fun Squirrel Nut Zippers, playing at Convention Hall on Friday night. I love this band — do yourself a favor and get a ticket! There are many more acts and more venues. Visit exitojazzfest.com, and just be there! Or turn up at the ticket office, that little building to the right of Convention Hall, where the jazz team will be on hand to help. Cape May recently lost a local legend with the passing of Shirley Stiles. I’ve known Shirley since the early days of Exit Zero — that lovely lady never tired of appearing in the pages of this magazine and never tired of enjoying every day of her life. Although the Canadian-born Shirley never had any immediate family close by, she knew hundreds of people in this area who were proud to call her family. Rest (or party) in peace, Shirley.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
am very intrigued by that televisual documentary series, “Westworld”. We had our own experiment with robotic staff in Cape May some years ago, and for one dizzy season, visitors to our fair city were welcomed by grinning mechanical “locals”. Of course, it ended badly, due to the hire as project leader of a strange fellow from Bolivia, who went only by the name Herr Professor and whose robotic expertise was matched only by his creepiness. Instead of the agreed series of greetings, mostly along the lines of “Welcome to Cape May!” and “Step this way, and bring your money!”, we had robots goose-stepping and poking guests in the eyes with random “sieg-heiling” salutes. Luckily my old buddies from The Big Red One were in town for a reunion, and so for a strange afternoon we had what unwary Shoebies took to be a reenactment from The Battle of the Bulge. We won, of course, and the disassembled Nazi robots (and their creator) were sealed up in the Concrete Ship. Sometimes, it’s said, late at night, you can hear strange mechanical voices intoning
“achtung!” out in the ocean. But Westworld shows that perhaps it is time to revisit the whole notion of automatons. It’s not that I particularly tire of the annual wave of spotty lads and lasses who arrive to assist and hinder us in equal measure: some years they have been wide-faced sunburned Irish, while lately we have legions of quick-eyed Slavs. I would like, instead, to have 1,000 hard-working, straight-dealing, even-toothed lads and lasses who had the best interests of Cape May at heart, and would speak a host of languages, including
the native tongue of Wildwood (a series of whistles and peeps). Such basic behavior as tipping one’s hat (as opposed to flipping one’s middle finger) and gently but firmly assisting drunken patrons home at night (rather than joining them and eventually passing out on the beach whilst attempting to “dab”) will be programmed into them. We are not, of course, fully done with events in the documentary show, but I feel confident that everything will be fine, and no robots will take to murdering guests or any such thing. And so I am confident enough to have started the same process here. As I dictate this, some of you will be receiving knocks at the door, to be met by your double. Please don’t struggle, as it’s for the best, and you should take comfort in the fact that the new “you” will be more efficient, polite, and skilled at persuading visitors to part with their money. They will not curse or complain about tourists whilst counting the takings, or any other Cape May “quirks” that we are so proud of. Why, I … oh hold on… who could be ringing the doorbell so late... ?

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the pleasures of fall
he roads that lead to Cape May are ablaze with color. Science tells us that trees change color when the nights are longer, slowing the production of greens (chlorophyll) and allowing the yellows (xanthophylls), oranges (carotenoids) and reds (anthocyanins) to show through. Although they’re clear on how, scientists admit that they can’t completely explain why the trees put on such a show. There are many theories about other, more efficient ways to shut down for the winter, but none are as pleasing to the human eye. Perhaps there is more to the old legends than we think. Since science had no answer at all until about 1780, human imagination has had time to fill in the gaps. Picture Mother Nature taking her paintbrush to the treetops just to give humans a treat before the cold, colorless winter sets in. Consider the Oneida tale of the three courageous hunters, eager to save their village, who attempt to kill the great bear, decorating the trees with the blood of the battle. Maybe the Wyandot Turtle who lives in the clouds sent a rainbow path down
for his friend, the Deer, to come for a visit. Or the Moss Maidens, Europe’s whispering, tree-dwelling helpers, have once again fallen victim to the Wild Hunt, or Persephone is due for her visit to the Underworld. Whatever you choose to believe, the resulting show is a fiery delight. Cozy up to a blazing fire in Cape May, and share your favorite fall story. You can find a welcoming fireplace at many of Cape May’s restaurants, from the traditional style of the Blue Pig, to the romance of Peter Shields or The Ebbitt Room, to the modern feel of Fins on the mall. Get a head start on your holiday
shopping, and then stop in to warm up. Check your list in the clubby Brown Room, or go down to the Boiler Room to make your own heat. If you’re leaving the kids at home, Willow Creek Winery offers FirePit Fridays well into December, from 5:30-9:30, with live entertainment and wine tastings, tapas, and beverages by the glass or bottle available. Call 609-770-8782 for reservations and choose option 5. In the daylight hours, visit Hawk Haven Winery for Saturdays on the Crushpad, through November 19. Order something to munch on, like the $28 Vineyard Picnic, and sip local wine as you listen to singer songwriters. Call (609) 846-7347 for information. Or take a tour or tasting at Cape May Winery. Tastings are $8. Tours are $20 and include at fruit and cheese tray, a wine tasting, and a souvenir wine glass. Call (609) 884-1169 for reservations. Learn just how good New Jersey wines can be, and pick up a case of wine for Thanksgiving while you’re there. Next week: Skip the Woods

Veronica Scutaro reviews Cape May Stage’s “Buyer and Cellar”
he rich are different from you and me,” F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote, as quoted by Roy Steinberg in his director’s notes for Cape May Stage’s Buyer and Cellar. “They possess and enjoy early, and it does something to them, makes them soft where we are hard, and cynical where we are trustful.” Trey Gerrald stars in this one-man show. He introduces us to the rich and soft, the hard and trustful as he plays several characters in this witty and engrossing story about an unemployed actor working in Barbra Streisand’s basement. Gerrald’s ability to morph his body — as well as his voice — into these separate characters is riveting. If you’ve ever seen a woman with long, manicured fingernails and how she moves her hands, you know that Gerrald is spot on in his imitation of the “Big Star”, as Streisand is called in the story. Vicious anger, squirmy discomfort, disappointment, heartbreak, joy and awe are all delivered by Gerrald, who has several stage, television and screen credits including Orange Is the New Black and TV Lands’ Younger. His central
Buyer and Cellar runs through November 18 character, Alex More, is charming, innocent — and star-struck. He shows us how vulnerable we can be when we worship from afar — and then get smacked in the face with the dead fish of the reality. When Gerrald plays Alex’s angry boyfriend, Barry, all the venom we expect from a jealous lover comes out — even if the object of admiration is only a mirage. Minor characters shine as brightly under Gerrald’s interpretation and the underlying theme of vulnerability rises through each character.
The scenery of peace and elegance, we shortly discover, has set the mood. We are instructed, as the play opens, to remember that the play is fiction. I had to keep reminding myself that none of this was real. It was like a temporary parallel universe where just maybe this could all have happened. The Off-Broadway show was written by Jonathan Tolins and won the coveted Drama Desk Award and top critics’ picks from The New York Times, Entertainment Weekly, and others. It has also toured around the country. The dialogue (well, sort of monologue you’d say, but it seems like dialogue) is sometimes irreverent, sometimes politically incorrect but consistently funny and poignant. Alex More is someone you’d want to be friends with, his sweetness makes him seem like the best a buddy can be. I wanted to invite him over to our house, but of course I’d keep him away from the basement — wouldn’t want to put him in a panic. Buyer and Cellar runs at the Robert Shackleton Playhouse, Bank and Lafayette, through November 18.

T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am between a rock and a hard place. My son plays ice hockey in Voorhees, NJ every Saturday morning. But my daughter is part of a dance troupe performing in the West Cape May Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 3. They are both very committed — my son to hockey and my daughter to dance. I can’t choose between them. How unfair is that? My husband works every Saturday so we can afford these extra-curricular activities. How can I be in two places at once? — Rocky Road Dear Rocky Road You should not choose — The Answer Lady has always found people in the arts and sports to be very generous. So, ask another parent if your daughter can have a

ride. It doesn’t all have to fall on you. Reach out. An excellent solution for you, at any rate, would be a sleepover. That way you can leave the house knowing your daughter is in good hands and the helpful parent doesn’t have to make two stops. Make sure you reward those who are helping you with pizza and a hostess gift. Pizza from Lucky Bones for the kids Friday night. As to the hostess gift, the Whale’s Tale, Across the Way, Bath Time and Good Scents all have a great selection of beautiful things which
any mom would love as a remembrance of a good deed. If that fails, hire a reliable babysitter who drives. Be sure to give her a little bonus for gas and for going out of her way Dear Answer Lady My mother-in-law is the worst person to buy for. She hates everything. She has everything. On the other hand, she is the most generous person in the world. My husband and I want to knock her socks off this Christmas. Suggestions? — Challenged Dear Challenged You can’t go wrong with jewelry. Lucky for you, Cape May is blessed with a plethora of jewelry stores. The estate jewelry stores offer a selection of unusual, high quality items. A designer diamond watch, diamond studded earrings, and the classic — a diamond ring — are at your fingertips at Mary Ann’s, Victorious and Queen May stores. For something custom, Patricia Jackson’s is the ticket. And for a wide variety of lovely pieces, Henry’s. Now, if you can’t impress her with any of those choices, next year get her a coupon for fries at McDonald’s.

CAPE MAY 2016 FILM FESTIVAL November 11-13, 2016
West Cape May Borough Hall and Firemen’s Banquet Hall 732 Broadway, West Cape May, New Jersey
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS FRIDAY NIGHT Friday evening’s program is The Ageless Art of Acting, and will showcase two films. The first is a short documentary called Starring Austin Pendleton, is about Austin Pendleton, an outstanding character actor who has been in films from Catch 22 to the voice of Gurgle in Finding Nemo. He might be best known for his role as a defense lawyer in My Cousin Vinny. The second film will be the documentary, Still Dreaming. It takes place at an actors’ home, where a group of long-retired Broadway entertainers put on Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. It’s touching and uproarious and shows how in art-making can enrich our lives at any age. Still Dreaming’s co-writer/ director, Jillann Spitzmiller, will hold a talkback afterwards.
SATURDAY On Saturday, we’ll show over 25 short films selected from nearly twice as many submittals. Lunch will be available for purchase! These will include three outstanding films, Rover, Shades of Red and The Girl In The Camera, which were made in response to a unique challenge by an organist who wrote short pieces of organ music then tasked teens to make films that fit the music. In Dance of The Neurons, 24 dancers, filmed from overhead, embody the birth of neurons, activating the brain/body. Documentaries will include The One Percent, a film which tells the story of 11-year-old Mark Himebaugh who has been missing since he disappeared from his Del Haven, N.J. home in 1991.

CAPE MAY 2016 FILM FESTIVAL November 11-13, 2016
West Cape May Borough Hall and Firemen’s Banquet Hall 732 Broadway, West Cape May, New Jersey
SATURDAY NIGHT Saturday evening will begin with the short film Come Away With Me, about a woman who reunites with the love of her life, an all-star athlete and war veteran. Come Away With Me will be presented by its director and star, Ellen Gerstein. That evening Ms. Gerstein will receive the Film Society’s Robert Prosky Character Actor Award for 2016. The second film Saturday evening will be The Finest Hours, staring Chris Pine and Casey Affleck. It brings to life the most daring rescue in the history of the Coast Guard, in which a crew of four risked their lives to save men stranded on a tanker that was split in half by a devastating nor’easter. In a 36-foot lifeboat they battled 60-foot waves, hurricane-force winds and freezing temperatures and somehow saved 32 of the 33 men left on board. Michael Tougias, the author of the book on which the film is based will hold a talkback and book signing afterwards.
SUNDAY On Sunday we’ll show ten short films. They’ll include The Road to Jericho, an outstanding film about a man who hijacks a cab, and several made locally. These include Under The Tower, a post-apocalyptic film, Disabilidates, about a horrible blind date, and Dallas Lore Sharp, a documentary about a boy in the 1880s who roamed the woods and marshes of South Jersey and later wrote some of the best loved nature books of that era.

Bird Droppings
A
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
sk anyone to name their five favorite birds and northern Cardinal is certain to be one of them. Its popularity has made it the state bird in seven states and the emblematic bird of two professional sports franchises. No other songbird holds this distinction. This rakishly crested cardinal red stunner is a permanent resident throughout its mostly eastern range, which happily includes Cape May. There is nothing quite like the sight of a bright red adult male cardinal to brighten a yard in winter. And its ringing is typically the first vocalization ushering in spring. The male’s red plumage is linked to reproductive success. The overall browner females evidently select in favor of birds showing the brightest plumage. So the reddest males get the girl and the best territories. But how can a red bird survive in a landscape where tens of thousands of birdcatching hawks migrate? First, cardinals avoid crowds. Feeding flocks attract hunting hawks and a bright red bird is easy to target
when a flock takes flight. Also, cardinals feed early and late, limiting their time of exposure. So the winning combination for male cardinals is bright plumage in combination with lots of places to hide. A handy bird feeder filled with black oil sunflower seed also enhances property value in the eyes of prospecting cardinals. But life is not precisely a bowl of cherries for cardinals. Backyards are prime hunting territories for prowling tabbies and
the cardinal’s twig-based nest is typically unconcealed, making them vulnerable to the parasitizing predilections of brown-headed cowbirds. Nest failure is the norm for cardinal. To compensate pairs may engage in as many as eight nesting efforts in a season. Not much has been written about cardinal behavior in winter but I suspect males and some females gather in convoy-like groups, protecting themselves from predators by multiplying lookouts. In the evening, just before going to roost, birds sit up and call. My record, one location count was 18 adult males in view at once. The location was a brush filled landscape in Hunterdon County augmented by a window feeder brimming with sunflower seed. Hint to anyone trying to beat the record. Go out at dusk after a snowfall. Even partially hidden birds pop when set against a backdrop of snow. Also when it comes to feeding cardinals, open platform feeders work best. Cardinals have big feet and generally shun feeders with short perches.
