Ramblings From The Editor

T

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

hat wasn’t a boring week, by any standards. Cape May got a new mayor on the night of November 8; America got a very unconventional new president; arguably the world’s best-known jazz musician once again played in Cape May; and my wife fainted twice in quick succession and taken to hospital in an ambulance. To those who were concerned, the wife is absolutely fine. Apparently she is prone to a condition where stress can trigger a response in the vagus nerve, causing someone to pass out. In my wife’s case, she was sitting in MagicBrain Café when she received a very annoying/very stressful work-related email, which, allied to the anguish she had been feeling since the presidential election, tipped her over — and on to the floor of the café. A big thank-you to the guys from Cape May Fire Department’s EMS, who were fast, efficient and friendly. No offense, guys, but I hope I never see you again in those uniforms. In happier news, Cape May does, of course, have a new mayor. Hearty congratulations to Chuck Lear, who took nearly two-thirds of the

vote, inflicting Ed Mahaney’s first-ever election defeat. It was a classic lesson in karma, since there is no way Lear would have run if Mahaney hadn’t decided to wage war on the police department, demoting Lear’s old boss, Rob Sheehan, and ensuring that Lear himself did not get the retirement that a 37-year servant deserved. I am looking forward to a Cape May where co-operation, teamwork and transparency wins the day. I feel good about this. Congratulations also to Tricia Hendricks,

who won a tight contest against Zack Mullock for the vacant council seat. Hendricks seems to inspire extreme feelings in people — positive AND negative. But she is someone who always appears to be well-prepared and thorough. And she won’t stand for any nonsense. The highlights of my week (other than my wife recovering, and Lear winning) were a fantastic performance by the Squirrel Nut Zippers as part of Exit Zero Jazz Festival on Thursday night, and dinner on Saturday at the magical Cape May Point home of Dave and Chris Clemans with the great Wynton Marsalis and his bandmates. Chef Guy Portewig cooked a great meal and I managed to hide my relative ignorance of jazz by talking to Marsalis about Scotland, of which he knew a fair bit and was eager to learn more. Congratulations are also due to Michael Kline, who once again curated another amazing jazz festival. The venues were packed, which is great for the town. And kudos to Cape May Film Festival for what I heard was another successful event. Cape May is getting cooler by the day...

The Old Fogey

W

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

e have two tasks ahead of us (you need to imagine I am saying this in the voice of Winston Churchill, a boor of a man, who used to stink up bar at The Admiral with his grotesque cigars, but who knew how to work a crowd). First, is to explain to those “dunderheids” (as my Scotch granny used to call anyone whose mental facilities she doubted, which was pretty much everyone) currently flocking to government like bloated horseflies, that global warming is actually a “thing”, and that they will be standing up to their foolishly and expensively clad ankles in the ocean unless that take it seriously. Second, because they will not listen, is to build a wall around Cape May. Actually, there is a third: to dust off our long-shuttered Creationist Museum, as I expect a steady flow of credulous visitors whose money might as well be channeled into our fair city. But back to the wall (the museum will take care of itself: as soon as we dust off the diorama of a Caucasian Moses riding a T-Rex, we are good to go): it will not be billed

to Mexico, or even new Mexico. Nor will it partly be a fence. By my calculations (made painstaking at Uncle Bill’s on a maple-syrupstained breakfast napkin), we need to assume a 12-foot rise in storm surges, then add a decent margin to account for future rises. So, we reckon 100 feet will be fine. Obviously, this will mean some logistical challenges: the initial plan, to construct it of damp sand, so people assumed we were just exceptionally keen on sandcastle contests, simply won’t do. Concrete is the most simple plan, with the slight downside that we will not be able

to see over it, and sunlight will not get in: the general effect will be that of living at the bottom of a well. And people and supplies would have to come in and out via mule and a precipitous trail, much like The Grand Canyon. Furthermore, top engineering brains (my old pal Wally who runs the dry cleaner’s and is a dab hand at fixing things) have predicted that the weight of concrete would critically unbalance Cape May, meaning that “husky” visitors would need to be kept well apart and made to step gently, for fear of the city flipping upside down. So we are looking at the aesthetically pleasing solution of a vast glass dome: we can transition from dry-land to sub-sea, with minimal fuss, and in time, once we all evolve gills, it will scarcely matter anyway. The only challenge is the actual glass dome, of course: right now we can make one that works perfectly so long as it is no more than ten feet in diameter. So we will implement a dual policy of eugenics to reduce future generations’ height by 90 per cent, just in case we need to meet in the middle.

The Activity Column

O

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the joy of Thanksgiving

ver the river and through the woods is a wonderful way to begin Thanksgiving, but some years, tradition has to take a back seat. Some years, the crowded house, crowded table version of Thanksgiving won’t work. Maybe the kitchen is out of commission. Maybe you still haven’t recovered from the election. Maybe the customary host recently welcomed a new baby, or suffers from a lingering illness like sick-of-cooking-itis or get-me-out-of-this-grocery-store-asthenia. Consider a new tradition. Dine with the family in one of Cape May’s finest restaurants. Until you’ve done it, it’s easy to underestimate the amount of labor involved in preparing the traditional Thanksgiving feast. The Pilgrims feasted for three days, and today’s hosts generally spend almost that long preparing. Surveys suggest that Thanksgiving chefs can spend two to three days cooking — one day for pies, one for sides, and one for meats — and that’s without handmade centerpieces or complex compotes. Even if invited guests bring sides and des-

serts, Thanksgiving is a big job, what with accommodating allergies, buying the wine, and moving furniture around. Then there’s the cleaning, whether you scrub the house from top to bottom or just declutter and dim the lights. Whew. Small wonder 15 million Americans choose to dine out. You’ve got a cornucopia of options if you plan to spend Thanksgiving in Cape May, but you should call ahead for reservations. Maybe you’d like to dine in your Cape May home without all the work — the Washington Inn will prepare a feast for 12 for $330 plus tax, including a 20-pound turkey, mashed pota-

toes, stuffing, sweet potatoes, green beans, gravy and pie. They even include the coffee. Call 609-884-5697 by November 20 and pick up the feast at Lucky Bones between 11 and 12:30 on Thanksgiving. If you’re feeling sociable, consider the buffet in Congress Hall’s Grand Ballroom, $45 per adult, $19 per child, with service from 1pm to 5pm. Call for information and reservations (609) 884-6574. Or, pretend you live in an elegant mansion with a full kitchen staff to serve you. Dress up and dine at Peter Shields, which offers a prix fixe dinner for $55 per adult. Call (609) 884-9090. Add oysters or lobster tail to your turkey at Union Park, which offers a variety of fixed price Thanksgiving meals for $48. Call (609) 884-8811. For those who think the leftovers are the best part, try Thanksgiving at The Inn of Cape May. From 2 to 7, they will serve whole turkeys, carved tableside. Call (609) 884-5555 to take home the leftovers and leave the mess behind. The Ebbitt Room also serves whole carved turkeys for parties of six or more, for $65 per person. Call 609-884-5700.

Tom Sims reviews the Cape May Film Festival

he Cape May Film Festival was a great success! CMFF16 (as we call it) was a weekend packed with great films, guest speakers and a chance to meet directors, actors, screenwriters, producers. Attendees got a behind-the-scenes look at all the great films being made in New Jersey or shown here for the first time. We started on Friday night with a salute to the “ageless art of acting.” We celebrate the character actor — you know these actors, even though you may not know their names. The film Still Dreaming brought us into the world of retired actors living in the Lillian Booth Actors home, located near Manhattan. Director/Writer Jilann Spitzmiller was our guest to answer questions. Her presentation about the film, how it was made, and its subject were insightful. On Saturday, we screened the best short films being made in New Jersey. Among my favorites: Sylvia, an allegory that praises nonconformity, Another Time, about a girl lost in the present (itwon the CMFF16 Curator Award), and the quirky — I mean QUIRKY — short Paco. There were a number of documentaries as well,

Charles Robinson and Ellen Gerstein in Come Away with Me, a festival hit particularly The Joke’s on You, featuring young comedian Adrian Colon. Saturday night, we continued to celebrate character actors. For the second time in its history, the festival presented the Robert Prosky Award for Character Acting to another notable actor (as well as writer/director/producer) Ellen Gerstein. Ellen has been a busy actor since the 1970s and recently has had a recurring role on TV’s Shameless and Southland. Ellen’s latest short is called Come Away with

Me and features another prominent character actor, Charles Robinson, who had a long-running appearance on the TV show Night Court. Robinson and Gerstein are wonderful together in a story about a woman seeking out her high school lover (Robinson) who now has Alzheimer’s and is in a nursing home. The short will be shown ahead of the presentation of the Prosky award. “The award named after my dad is one that we don’t give away too often,” says Stefan Prosky, CMFF Curator of Films. “We reserve it for people who have been particularly active and continue to do outstanding work. Come Away with Me is one of those exceptional shorts.” On Sunday, there were several more remarkable films, including Road to Jericho, which won the CMFF reviewer’s choice award. The weekend ended on a high note, albeit a silent high note. East Lynne Theater Company partnered with us to the silent film classic The Shiek with live organ music accompaniment! Thanks to all who made CMFF16 a success, especially Mal and Dottie Knapp for all of their help in pulling everything together.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady Last summer I dated a guy I’ve known my whole life. It only lasted a couple of months because we realized we were better as friends. We still go out for drinks together. I might point out we don’t go out alone but meet up with a bunch of other friends. We were in a booth at the Ugly Mug having a good time recetnly when his old girlfriend showed up, creating a monster of scene. The bouncer showed us out and she showed up at my door the next day “warning” me to stay away from him. I told her I’d do what I want to do with whomever, whenever and slammed the door. — Red Alert Dear Red You need to report this to the police and to your friend. And maybe cool the

Wise answers to perplexing questions

Ugly Mug reunions for a bit. You also might want to have a heart to heart with the exgirlfriend on neutral territory — say Cape May Winery — and reassure her you have an enduring friendship with your mutual ex and explain you aren’t the enemy. Depending on how that goes, you can take measure regarding your next step. Restraining order comes to mind, but let us hope virtue is the better part of valor. Dear Answer Lady My father is insisting I spend Thanks-

giving with him and his new wife and her three children. His wife is only 10 years older than me. Isn’t this a betrayal to my mother? She’s going away for the holidays. I begged to go with her, but she said no. She knows I can’t really afford to take the time off from work. So, I have no excuse. What do I do? — Stepmother Intolerant Dear Intolerant The Answer Lady hates to tell you this, but sometimes in life — actually more often than you’d suspect — you have to do stuff you don’t want to do and do it with grace. So often when divorced parents remarry the father turns to the “new” family, leaving the “old” behind. Your father is not doing that. So embrace it and look for the positive. By the way, don’t dare show up empty handed. A homemade apple or pumpkin pie from Westside Market is just the gesture to open the way for new experiences. You don’t have to pledge your dying love to your new siblings and stepmother, but you do have to be the gracious. It’s what separates the child from the adult.

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

I

woke this morning, November 9, to discover that overnight my fellow citizens had appointed a dictator to lead us — not in constitutional fact but in temperament. Being somewhat troubled by this democratic rebuttal, I took my disquiet outside to seek the prognosticating advice of birds, who have for centuries and in assorted civilizations served as augers and messengers from the gods. The first bird I encountered was a scolding mockingbird. “That’s apt,” I thought. Next to appear was a male cardinal, a bird as red as all those states on the CNN polling map. “Fitting,” I surmised. Gods must be in an attentive mood this morning. Then I noticed the robins. Hundreds of robins high overhead leaving their roost and going off to forage. It’s a daily winter pattern here, affirming in it’s predictability. Birds, you see, care little about the travails of we humans. They have their own lives to lead. Red state, blue state, democracy or total-

itarian state, we can count on nature to do what comes natural and for birds to be birds. Nations rise, nations fall, nature goes on. Of course not everything in nature goes smoothly. Suddenly the starlings on the church steeple, exploded in flight. The starlings, like all Americans, are immigrants to these shores. However, the Cooper’s hawk that put them to flight is a New World endemic. This one, a young bird, was more ambitious than accomplished. The starlings got away. Cooper’s hawks are birdcatching

specialists so it wasn’t long before the hawk was off again, pursuing one of the neighborhood’s mourning doves. I don’t know how the chase ended. I got distracted by the morning commute of black ducks, nearly two hundred flying by in flocks of three to 20, all high, so out of shotgun range, a perennial challenge if you are a duck living in an environment where water fowling is a time honored tradition. My morning one-hour birdwatching limit was up. But this morning I lingered, first because I was hoping for a bald eagle, second because if I went inside, I’d just turn on the news. I blanked on the eagle but after my communion with birds at least my mood was much improved. Nature is healing. And searching for some silver lining in the recent election results, I find this. The night owls among us can look forward to four years of parody-rich material on the late-night talk shows.
