Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

L

ike most people around these parts, I love the summer, and I particularly like early fall in Cape May. But you can add the holidays season to the list of Best Times to be in Cape May. While many (most?) other east-coast resort towns are desolate places to be at this time of the year (watch the tumbleweed!), Cape May is transformed into a twinkling village by the sea. Had Charles Dickens chosen to set A Christmas Carol in a resort town, my guess is he would have described a place very much like Cape May (though I have, of course, no business at all trying to get into the mind of Charles Dickens. The Victorian architecture festooned with holiday lights lends real magic to this most wonderful time of year, though I do wish many more of the great old buildings on this island decorated (see the Chamber of Commerce ad on page 63 to see how they are taking action on this front). As I sit here pondering how to create a perfect Thanksgiving feast for my non-meateating inlaws (thank the lord for Green Street Market, where I bought the same kind of fake

turkey that not even Amazon could deliver in time for the cooking frenzy) I’m getting the same frisson I’ve had at this time of year since I was going to bed with a teddy bear. Cape May at Christmas really does bring back childhood memories — or, for those who maybe didn’t always enjoy storybook Christmas times, it provides the chance to start anew and, as Dickens wrote of Ebeneezer Scrooge, learn “to keep Christmas well.” The centerpiece of a Cape May Christmas has become the Winter Wonderland extrava-

ganza at Congress Hall. The tree-lighting ceremony (on Friday, December 2) gets so busy, they’ll soon be needing traffic cops to control the crowd. If you haven’t been to Winter Wonderland yet, don’t miss it. Even if you can’t make the tree-lighting, you will still get a thrill from the shopping village, the 30-foot tree, the carousel and all the festive refreshments. Then there is, of course, West Cape May Christmas Parade on Saturday, December 3, an opportunity to hang out with friends and family, drink hot chocolate (or, you know, whatever you want to put in that flask) and watch a long procession of floats pass by, while popping in and out of local bars for drinks and bites. Some people I know really have this routine down. And you have the choice of FOUR plays — Cape May Stage will be performing One Christmas Carol at Robert Shackleton Playhouse, plus This Wonderful Life at Congress Hall; Yuletide Tales is on at East Lynne Theater Company; and Elaine’s will be showing their annual Scrooge. Get out there and be merry!

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

do like soup. And no, this is not about to be a long-winded and patronising metaphor for the glorious mix of ingredients that make our country great, and that we should take great care not to lose, as a soup made of only one ingredient (especially if that is, say, old expensive dried-up white beans) tastes awful and gives one terrible belly ache. Not from me such crude sermons. No, dear hearts, I refer to actual soup, a subject close to my heart now the cold wind is blowing off the sea and chilling these old bones. Dear departed Ma D’Catur used to keep a colossal pot of broth on the stove for the entire winter. Not once did I see it less than brimming, and even in lean times, she was able to find enough ingredients to keep it going. That said, her Great Depression Leaves and Other Findin’s Broth was a little low on flavor and nutrition, except when that poor hobo who’d sneaked in to try and steal himself a bowl, slipped and fell in. Of course, we didn’t know he’d fallen in til the spring, when we all started getting steel boot hobs and the occasional metal filling in our bowls. Well,

you may be screwing up your face and doing a little retching, even, but things were tough in these days and by the time we’d realized what was making the soup unusually tasy for such tough times, the fella had been long since cooked, eaten and digested. Come to think of it, such accidents did seem to happen when either times were tough or some local worthy was making life hard for Ma: “I call this one Tax Collector’s End,” I recall Ma crowing once snowy day. That Christmas I also happened to receive an unexpected gift of a leather briefcase, while various siblings got a foun-

tain pen, a pair of size 11 black leather brogues and a pocket calculator. Certainly we have long had a tradition of not looking in the pot, and certainly not fishing out anything unusual that one might have thought one saw bubbling briefly to the surface. Since Ma passed away, and the ingredients have been the task of yours truly, I confess that the recipes have become less, um, controversial. Oh, once in a while I have added the results of the basement laboratory, as an ad hoc field test (it is no coincidence that Cape May’s average lifespan is 20 years longer than the national one, or that every man woman and child has a hairy chest). And I did once catch Young Albert performing what I can only describe as an impressive if deplorable act of defiance right across the room into the pot. But that batch was donated entirely to our Wildwoodian neighbors, and was very well received indeed, if I recall. “Why yes,” I responded to the appreciative diners, “that impressive color is indeed derived from golden corn!” Soup: nutrition and comedy all in one

K

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the traditions of Christmas

ids who grow up celebrating Christmas develop strong notions about how the season should be marked. Anything that happens more than once becomes “tradition.” My own two grew up believing that “Every day is Christmas in Cape May,” thanks to toddling walks with their grandmother past a statue of Santa Claus that once stood on Madison Avenue. Therefore, the holiday must include a trip to Cape May, along with pictures and breakfast with Santa, even when they were too shy to look at him. We must see a show. Reindeer food (oatmeal and glitter) must be sprinkled on the lawn. And they must have an advent calendar. One, because when they were too little for much candy, we got them one advent calendar, and they cut the candies in half to share. They are fairly grown up now, and they still share a $5 advent calendar, and still cut the candies in half. Tradition. Traditional advent calendars began as a way to track the four Sundays before Christmas. In the 1800s, Queen Victoria’s German in-laws would likely have marked the passing

weeks with purple and rose candles, and with chalk marks on their doors. Later, they began counting the days from December 1st to the 24th using homemade posters or boxes, with a marker to be moved every night. In the early 1900s, Gerhard Lang created the first printed advent calendar, a piece of cardboard with 24 small cardboard doors. Opening the door would reveal a picture or Bible verse. Newspapers began to include the calendars in advertising inserts, and eventually someone added slots to be filled with small candies. Count your way down to Christmas with your own Cape May traditions. Congress

Hall’s Winter Wonderland opens on November 25, with storytime, shopping, and train rides. Visit caperesorts.com for more information. There are craft fairs almost every weekend, starting with MAC’s Holiday Craft Fair at Convention Hall on November 26 from 10-4, so you can find unusual gifts and decorations. The Church of the Advent Bazaar is December 3 from 9 to 2, with baked goods, and Grandma’s Attic. Stop by on your way to the West Cape May Christmas Parade. There’s a Christmas tree lighting on December 2 from 7 to 9 at Congress Hall. See a seasonal show while you’re in town. Cape May stage presents One Christmas Carol, November 25 through December 31, a “spirited evening of theater” for the whole family — or at least the ones ages six and up. East Lynne Yuletide Tales brings characters from American Christmas classics to life through December 10, with a focus this year on Nathaniel Hawthorne and Mark Twain. Visit eastlynnetheater, org for details. Or check out Congress Hall’s This Wonderful Life.

E

very Thanksgiving, my mind turns to one thing. No turkey. No, not stuffing — although I do miss my aunt’s “hacking dry” cornbread stuffing. Oh, my aunt is still with us. It’s just that the whole family got together and signed a petition to make her stop gagging us with that dish. I’m talking about the movies! It’s that time of year. We all have maybe some time off hopefully. You’ve seen maybe one too many Hallmark movies. You know the one, where you’re hoping she will get together with that cute guy, but there’s so much turmoil between them. Surely, I hope the two kids can work that out. Everyone has their favorite holiday, and I have no doubt you’ll be watching them. But what will be your new favorite? Or will a new one you fall in love with this year actually go up for an Oscar? Although it’s getting some negative reviews, Bad Santa 2 is hitting theaters this holiday season. Many people saw the first film, which was as irreverent as it was sort of

By Tom Sims of the Cape May Film Festival

Manchester by the Sea is getting Oscar buzz funny. It got enough good reviews to greenlight a second helping. It’s not on my watchlist, but here is a preview of some upcoming films that I’ve got my eye on. Manchester by the Sea: This is the movie that’s getting a lot of Oscar buzz. It was a big hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. A man suddenly becomes legal guardian for his nephew after his brother dies. It looks compelling, and features a powerful cast who apparently deliver outstanding performances.

Moana: There is high praise so far for this Disney animated film. A courageous girl sets out on a adventure to save her family. I’m not sure how innovative the storyline is, but it’s always interesting to see what Disney will put out next. Lion: Saroo, a five-year-old boy, gets lost on a train and separated from his family. He takes a long journey across India to places he’s never been. Ultimately he is adopted by an Australian couple. Twenty-five years later, he goes back to his hometown to try to find his family. Some movies I plan to miss: Trolls, Almost Christmas and a host of others. If you watch these two (or anything really), send me a short comment (this ain’t English class so don’t worry about punctuation or spelling) — and I’ll put your comments here! And if you’re looking for a gift, why not get my new book, Flix You Missed. It features more than 100 films from the past 10 years that you (probably) didn’t see it. It’s a great read, like this column. Find out more at www.flixyoumissed.com!

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I have two close friends, let’s call them Nancy and Carla. The three of us often go out to dinner or meet for drinks but last week, I asked only Carla to lunch at Delaney’s. I needed to talk to her about something I didn’t care to share with Nancy. About five minutes in, Nancy showed up out of the blue. This meant changing tables. Nancy only had tea, so I didn’t have to pay for another lunch but I also didn’t get a chance to talk to Carla — the very reason for going to lunch. I’m still pretty upset and feel I have to bring it up to Carla, because how did Nancy even know we were having lunch? — Three’s a Crowd Dear Three’s a Crowd Since you feel so strongly about this,

Wise answers to perplexing questions

you should bring it up. However, do note that since you were seated at a table for two not three, it appears on the surface that Carla simply told Nancy that the two of you were meeting. Maybe she felt left out and wanted to send a message. Maybe she assumed that not being invited was an oversight. The next time you meet with Carla, you should make it clear that a table for two is how you would like to keep it. Dear Answer Lady I feel I am in competition with my co-

mother-in-law for who buys my granddaughter the most coveted presents. I already got the Barbie Dreamhouse, only to find out that MiMi bought one as well. Now, who returns the second one? I can assure you it will be me. My granddaughter is only three but this is not the first time I have to kowtow so my daughter doesn’t get into a brouhaha with her husband. What to do? — Always Second Best Dear Second Best The Answer Lady will not lecture you on the greater point that things do not matter nearly as much as daily demonstrations of affection. Spend time baking cookies — there are lovely cookie cutters at Love the Cook. Age three is the perfect time for cutting them into shapes and adding colored sprinkles. As to the perfect Christmas present — a summer pass from Morey’s Piersand Waterparks won’t resonate on Christmas morning but you will be inspiring the making of memories that will last long after the Dreamhouse is packed away.

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

I

t must be the light, the low slanting sunlight cast by a horizon hugging November sun. I look at birds all year long but there is something about birds in November that makes them pop. Take Canada geese, a common breeder and migrant and winter resident. I know you golfers out there are thinking” “yes, take them someplace else.” Sorry. These boldly patterned web-footed grass munchers are here to stay. It’s not the goose’s problem that our landscaping design favors these once northern breeders. We changed the habitat, the geese moved in. Aldo Leopold in his epic Sand County Almanac writes about the world cocking its ear at the distant sound of an approaching f lock. I remember a high school football scrimmage during which a f lock of geese f lew over and play stopped. Our coach was so moved by the f lock he had tears trickling down his Marine recruitment poster face. There is another reason that goose

f locks in November hold special appeal. In these migrant f locks you may find the odd cackling goose, a petite Canada. You may also encounter one or more snow geese during your search. While you are looking for the cackling goose, keep your eyes open to the possibility of an adult tundra swan. Smaller than our native mute swans, tundras have black bills and are frequently bullied by the highly territorial mute swans. Chances are the orange-billed mutes will drive it away

or some bright sunny day, our orphaned tundra will hear a familiar whooping sigh and join the f lock of others speeding overhead. Tundras winter by the hundreds in North Carolina. A few linger in the Pine Barrens and Brigantine National Wildlife Refuge. Among the hundreds of ducks foraging in South Cape May are two drake Eurasian wigeon. As you might suspect, these chestnut-headed stunners hang out with the gray-headed American wigeon. But I’ve seen them with the gadwall f locks, too. On our most recent Monday morning bird walk, we tallied fifteen species of waterfowl including ring-necked duck, wood duck, and hooded merganser, designer ducks every one of them. Waterfowl will continue to dominate our Monday walks for as long as the freshwater ponds remain open. The sunlight is pretty fine in December, too and it makes the brightly colored speculum on green-winged teals really pop. No green is greener.

BRADLEY is quite the handsome little fella. He was picked up strolling the streets at night looking for food. Bradley is a gray and white domestic short hair adult who is looking for nothing more then a little TLC. Stop by the shelter today and meet your new best friend. Bradley will be waiting for you!

BUNNY is her name because she hops to her food. The hop is from a limp in her back leg, but that just adds to her character. She is also soft and cuddly like a bunny! Although Bunny has a few years under her belt, she has quite the young personality. Don’t wait until Easter to adopt a bunny, this is the only one you need!

SHAUNA is a shy little lady who was one of many from a hoarder house. She was constantly getting lost in the crowd. Shauna has never had a home or someone to care for her in her entire life. Now she has a clean bed, toys and gets fed regularly. But she is patiently waiting for the next step, a home. Give Shauna a chance and adopt today!
