Ramblings From The Editor
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
F
irst, the good news. In the event that you’ve heard a nasty little rumor that Lucky Bones is being evicted, relax — it isn’t true. David Craig, who has operated the harbor area restaurant with his family for the past 10 years, reached out this week to quash the story. “Rumors are realities that we have to live with,” he said. “As a business owner, I tend to ignore rumors, whether they are being spread maliciously or not. But when a rumor like this affects our greatest asset, our employees, it is time that I need to address it. Lucky Bones helps provide a living for a large number of Cape May County families. You can imagine the stress and anxiety that they have, particularly around the holidays, hearing that they could be losing their source of income. Even our assurance that their jobs are safe is not always sufficient when the rumor mill is telling them something different.” When Lucky Bones opened for business, in April of 2006, they leased from Sally Laudeman, mother of Lobster House owner, Keith Laudeman. After Sally passed away, in
rant, the Pelican Club, after the owners of the Marquis de Lafayette decided to convert the restaurant’s penthouse location into condos. I was there for the Pelican Club’s last night, New Year’s Eve, 2005, and I’m glad to set the record straight that Lucky Bones ain’t going anywhere. It’s especially good news for me and my regular LB lunch buddies, Dave Clemans and Jim Moffatt. Now some more good news... the Exit Zero Burns Supper will be bigger than ever next year! And by next year, I mean two months from now — Saturday, January 28. We will be switching the event to Carney’s after 12 happy years at the Ugly Mug. Reason being the event has grown so much that we had to use both the Mug and Delaney’s last year, which was logistically a bit too challenging. Given that we will have a capacity of more than 300 at Carney’s, I’m excited about all the extra money we will raise for Exit Zero Jazz Festival, which receives ALL of the proceeds from the Burns Supper. Tickets remain $35 and can be bought online at ezstore.us or by calling us on 609-770-8479.
³ January of last year, ownership of the property moved to her niece Jennifer Santisi and her husband Anthony, who are based in Wallingford, PA but regularly visit Cape May — and eat at the Lobster House. “The Santisis share Sally’s love of this landmark building,” added David Craig. “The Santisis and the Craigs have a long-term business arrangement. We both want to continue to make Lucky Bones a very special place.” You might recall that the Craig family had to fold up another beloved landmark restau-

The Old Fogey
W
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
ell of COURSE we have magic here in Cape May! How else do you suppose this wee city of ours remains so elegant, so prosperous, so easy on the eye? I cannot believe anyone is naive enough to think otherwise! This matter came to the fore when one of my vile great-grandchildren (whose names I refuse to learn: I make the effort only to know their relative position to inherit the D’Catur title and lands, and use that from then on, modifying when necessary to take into account deaths, marriages, assassinations and so on). So, Number 87 insisted we go and watch a documentary about New York City by a feckless English magician. I suspect that some slight exaggeration was built in, possibly by those skilled artisans who can take a piece of film and paint every frame so as to add things that were not originally there. I have never seen someone simply point an actual wand, and then have entire buildings fly around. I confess I was irritated by the chap who featured: it seemed
to me that had he simply used a boot lace to secure his damnable case, we would have had a seven-minute travelogue rather than an interminable series of totally avoidable dramas. So, I cuffed Number 87 around the ear to signal my mild annoyance, and told him he would not be attending Hogwarts, as that school seemed only to allow bumbling fools to graduate. Here in the real world, magic is a lot more prosaic and useful. Obviously, we guarantee a successful Shoebie harvest by detaining and sacrificing the last visitor from the previous
season. And we have a number of supposedly mythical beasts detained here at our pleasure, to carry out the endless decorating and maintenance of our gingerbread properties. My dislike of Irishmen is matched only by my approval of leprechauns and their work ethic. And of course my own, and that of a select band of Cape May folks are extraordinarily long-lived (“immortal”, one might say) thanks to the magical properties of the Fountain of Youth, which used to bubble up where the bandstand is, but was long since diverted to a secure tap in the basement of the D’Catur Mansion. Every Hogmanay, guests are given a tiny drop in their eggnog, and so age not a day in the year that follows. Of course, it is to be handled with care: I recall when that boor Eisenhower muscled his way down and drank a full pint before we caught him. He made a dreadfully needy baby, I must say. And the indignity of having to address a squaling infant as “Mr President” was really too much. Of course, all of this is secret, and so you will forget this column when I snap my fingers …. NOW!

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the West Cape May Christmas Parade
one of us live in a Norman Rockwell painting. Heck, Norman Rockwell didn’t live in a Norman Rockwell painting. But one night of the year, Rockwell and his easel would be quite at home on the corner of Broadway and Perry in West Cape May. The West Cape May Community Christmas Parade is the Rockwellian slice of Americana on the Cape May calendar. Visitors plan vacations around it. Locals use it as a miniature high school reunion. Realtors use a location on the parade route as a selling point. It’s something special, with a horse-drawn carriage right out of a fairy tale, dancers in sparkling costumes, animals both real and stuffed, fire trucks, fairy lights, Mummers, the Statue of Liberty, and local celebrities, both those who love the limelight and others clearly pressed into service. There are decorated boats on trailers, floats full of cherubic children, and marching bands. The fact that the parade takes place in the dark makes it a little more magical, and the occasional long stretches between acts
remind you that it’s not some over-produced, generic show. It’s a community event, put on by people who love Christmas and love West Cape May. Some of the floats represent local charities. In the spirit of the season, a group of teenagers will be traveling the parade route, collecting toilet paper, paper towels and other paper goods for local food pantries. Taxpayers don’t have to foot the bill for this holiday kickoff. It is funded by the people of Cape Island, the tourists who love it, and the businesses that serve it. Donations can be mailed to Borough Hall, 732 Broadway, West Cape May, New Jersey, 08204.
Bring your good humor, your patience, and more warm clothing than you think you’ll need. You can bring a chair, but good luck finding a space to plant it. Try not to drive. The parade is a different kind of Cape May crowded. Your standard Christmas choochoo takes up several parking spaces, after all, and Mummers and costumed performers wearing giant heads need room to maneuver. The parade lasts a long time, and some of the younger performers and watchers can get adorably sleepy by the time the show is over. Be prepared for some piggybacking. The parade is always the first Saturday in December — December 3 this year. They step off at 5:00pm sharp from the West Cape May Volunteer Firehouse (the aforementioned 732 Broadway), march South on Broadway, East on Perry, and end up on Carpenter Lane in the City of Cape May. (This is a fun, but very crowded place. Some of the marchers turn around at the end to become watchers, and things get really cozy.) December 4 is the rain date. Next week: Candlelight House Tours

The Theater Column
East Lynne and Cape May Stage festive offerings Dottie and Mal Knapp review of Yuletide Tales at East Lynne Theater Need a little Christmas? Gayle Stahlhuth becomes so many wonderful characters in this new one-person show, you don’t need to find the spirit of the season — it finds you! Sit back and immerse yourself in the Christmas you like to remember. In Mark Twain’s Susie’s Letter from Santa Claus, two children receive very specific instructions of what to do to receive a particular gift from Saint Nick. Parents who couldn’t always grant their child’s “exact wish” will love the explanation from wise Mr Claus. Next, young Nora, in a new town, waits for her brother to walk to 9 Linwood Street (by Edward Everett Hale). The superb talent of Stahlhuth (who also directs) fashions the people who help Nora: a Salvation Army lass, Swedish family, milkman, and policeman, not to mention the ladies club. Good thing she conveys all those characters with her beautifully blended accents and body language — the stage couldn’t have held all those actors! In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Snow Image, two
Two one-person Christmas shows to get you in the proper festive spirit imaginative children magically build a snow child to play with them. Turns out Hawthorne was way ahead of Frosty the Snowman. Lastly, a timeless story of love and giving. Stahlhuth makes us feel the love anew behind the sacrifices that each makes for the other’s happiness in O. Henry’s Gift of the Magi. Veronica Scutaro reviews One Christmas Carol at Cape May Stage This play, written by Douglas Baker and directed by Roy Steinberg, gives Gary Marachek the opportunity to show us his
phenomenal character range. He plays Tiny Tim, The Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, and channels his inner Alastair Sim to play the star role. His ability to move through each of the characters, aided only by three empty chairs, is flawless. Those of us familiar with the original work (and all of the screen adaptations) may miss some of scenes we expect, ultimately it doesn’t matter. The message rings as clear as the tolling of the clock or clanging of the door handle. The issues of poverty, hunger, inadequate housing and lack of economic opportunity are not new to humankind. Marachek walks us down these paths with sensitivity and clarity of intent: be aware that what is yet to come can be changed with a right heart and spirit. And while this performance is a wonderful adaptation of the Dickens tale, I urge everyone who gets the chance to see the play to not miss the Director’s Note in the program. Steinberg writes a personal and heartfelt letter to all of us. If you can only carve out two hours for yourself this holiday season, spend it with Marachek.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My boyfriend has invited me to go skiing over Christmas. My parents are having a cow. I am a freshman in college and feel it is time for me to decide for myself. It’s not as though it’s a Waltons’ Christmas at our house. My parents don’t get on very well and my sister comes home with her perfect husband and two perfect children and no one really notices me. I become invisible. If you say it’s okay, Answer Lady, I know my parents with be all right with it. — Invisible Girl Dear Invisible Legally, yes, you can do as you wish, assuming your parents aren’t paying for your education. If they are paying, you owe them the courtesy to give it one more year so they can adjust to your newfound quasi-
Wise answers to perplexing questions
independence. A compromise would be to spend Christmas with your family, annoying though they may seem, and meet your beau Monday. The way to stop being invisible is to make a significant contribution to the holiday — a beautiful jumbo shrimp platter from the Lobster House would do the trick. It always works for the Answer Lady Dear Answer Lady I know my three adult children will feel obligated to visit over the holidays — with their six children. Is it selfish of me to want
them to stay away? I can’t bear the thought of all the work I will have to do to make the day as perfect as they remember it from their childhoods. Isn’t it time for them to start doing their own holiday? — Too Tired to Care Dear Too Tired What a fabulous mother you were and are. It’s up to you to lead the family into a new direction. Why not book them rooms at Congress Hall or pick a whole house rental? It won’t cost you much more than it would to room and board 12 people for three or four days. The Answer Lady also recommends reservations at the Blue Pig or the Merion Inn, both of which are kid-friendly, for the Christmas day feast. You could host Christmas morning brunch which would be perfect for opening presents and chilling out until dinner. The Answer Lady finds brunch is far easier sometimes than dinner. Anytime people are staying over, it is indeed a whole other level of cleaning, prep and clean-up. The linens alone take up time which could otherwise be spent having fun with the kids and grandkids.

Bird Droppings
O
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
ne of the great things about bird watching is that there will always be something new to see. Take sharp-shinned hawks. I have probably counted more than anyone alive. I’ve had them fly between my legs and had one circle my head in pursuit of a yellow-rumped warbler, but yesterday I saw an adult male fly through a chainlink fence, a feat not even recorded in the scientific literature. The hawk simply folded its wings and slipped through two square inches. If you live in or near Cape May, you, too, have seen sharp-shinneds. They are our most common raptor migrant. I have counted over 12,000 in a day. I recall one field trip in the South Cape May Meadows with David Sibley, who spied a single redbreasted nuthatch clinging to the inside of a rusting sixty gallon drum. A wave of sharpies were flowing by on either side. Nuthatches are nimble but not particularly fast fliers. To leave the safety of that metal fortress meant certain death. Sorry, I cannot tell you the outcome. We
left with the nuthatch still clinging to the drum and to life. My guess is that after midmorning when the waves of ground hugging sharp-shinneds gained altitude, the nuthatch made a break for the trees. Predators and their prey are pretty evenly matched with prey species typically enjoying a modest edge in speed or maneuvrability. To gain the upper hand predators often rely upon the element of surprise. Yet and still there was a great deal of open space between the nuthatch and the

safety of the trees and many hungry sharpshinneds. Still, my money is on the nuthatch. Most of the sharp-shinneds were juveniles. Evolution had equipped them with the right tools, but their skills were still rudimentary. Many birds of prey do not live long enough to become accomplished hunters. Some are killed by other raptors, some are caught out over open ocean and drown, not a few strike windows and die. Chain link fences they can manage — plate glass they cannot. So the next time you see a sharp-shinned Hawk eying the birds at your feeder, think of it less as a “bloodthirsty little tyrant” and more as a superlative super-achiever who has beaten the odds and lived to perform its role in nature which is to cull the weak and sick birds before they can spread their infirmity to healthy birds. And remember, by feeding birds in your yard you are not causing them to be killed, you are causing them to be killed where you may witness the drama. Prepare to be wowed.

SADIE is an American staffordshire terrier mix who is shy at first, but once she gets to know you is quite the social butterfly! In her last home Sadie lived with a cat and they got along swimmingly, so no need to worry about owning other pets. Give the gift of love this holiday season and rescue Sadie today!
CODY is a 14-year-old shih tzu mix who is desperately in need of your help! He has some vision problems so a patient owner is a must. Due to his age, Cody would be best if he were the only animal in the household. Cody qualifies for the “Senior for Senior” program so if you are 62 years or older adoption fees are waived! Give the gift of love! Adopt!
GUNNER is a labrador retriever who loves to give high fives! He has no problem living with cats and kids, quite the family pet he is!
