Ramblings From The Editor
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
S
itting at Tuesday’s meeting of Cape May City Council, I was reminded of how much I’m looking forward to next year. Call me a hopeless optimist, but, come January 1, I’m expecting a breath of fresh air — a wave of transparency — to blow through City Hall, which for the past eight years has operated behind a dark cloak. Buried deep on Tuesday’s agenda were a pair of resolutions that would protect city officials and council members from potential legal action resulting from lawsuits being brought by Rob Sheehan, dragged through the mud after being demoted from the post of police chief, and Joe Carney, whose beachfront bar Carney’s was (if you know the whole story) also unfairly targeted by the city. I’m not surprised Sheehan and Carney are suing the city — I believe that the pettiness of outgoing Mayor Ed Mahaney was largely behind the targeting of both men, which is likely why the city drafted the resolutions that would lay much of the financial responsibility for settling the lawsuits on the taxpayers, allowing Mahaney et al to pursue witchhunts
on outdoor seating? Call me paranoid, but I don’t think so. Again... bring on January. I need to apologize for being an idiot. Last week, in a story about Lucky Bones, I identified the late Sally Laudeman as mother of Lobster House owner Keith Laudeman. As most people on this island know (and, honest, I knew, too!), Keith’s mother is Marijane, who is alive and kicking — and presumably itching to kick my ass for making such a dumb error. Sincere apologies to the Laudeman family. A reminder... the Exit Zero Burns Supper will be held on Saturday, January 28 at a new venue... Carney’s. After 12 happy years at the Ugly Mug we decided we needed to move to a bigger venue. Tickets remain $35 and can be bought online at ezstore.us or by calling us on 609-770-8479. Pet lovers, it’s time for the Billmae Cottage Annual Giving Tree. Donate dog and cat food, treats, toys, old-but-clean blankets, collars and leashes. Donations go to Animal Outreach and the county shelter. Drop your goods off at the Billmae, 1015 Washington Street, Cape May.
³
without fear of retribution. I don’t have the time (thanks to Mahaney’s delaying tactics) or space to get into detail, but discussions of the resolutions were delayed until after a closed session — which likely meant most of the public who turned up at 1pm would have gone home by the time council reconvened, many hours later. Is it a coincidence that the meeting was already running long because City Manager Bruce MacLeod (who retires at the end of this year) took an inordinate amount of time to outline a report

The Old Fogey
C
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
an you guess what is in my bulging sack? Apart from an hilarious selection of risqué festive jokes, that is? Oh how I adore Christmas! All of the D’Catur Mansion staff do, too: from the 1:10 scale model of Santa’s train that rumbles through the house every hour, manned by Capuchin monkeys in elf suits, blowing its steam whistle, blasting steam from its chimney, to the snow machines installed in the basement, and the trio of volunteers from the Home For Manic Ex-Wrestlers in Wildwood who are dressed as Santa and under orders to wrestle anyone they come across onto their knee and extract a Christmas List from them, through tickling. I do worry sometimes that it is just TOO exciting for the staff, judging from their strained smiles and glassy eyes, not to mention jumping at the slightest thing, such as Young Albert leaping out at them in his Rudolph costume. The hooting flashing red nose is a stroke of genius, as it not only adds to the comic surprise, but is so large it prevents him from inflicting serious bites.
This was unintentional, but I am finding that not having to ferry staff back and forth to the emergency room is giving me extra time to devote to the D’Catur Christmas Experience. And fret not: this Experience is not being selfishly kept just for me, my staff and those family members who manage to circumvent the security systems and gain entry to the Mansion (in the hope of receiving expensive gifts, or stealing good of a value they think they deserve: the monkeys, wrestlers and a pack of stray cats I have trained to attack when someone whispers “nice pussy! Let’s
not tell anyone what we saw, okay?” will of course put paid to that plan). No, as soon as my motorized sleigh is back from its green refit (the crude-oil-burning engines were an environmental hazard, though the resultant fog did add a suitably eerie feel to Cape May), I will be hitching up the bears (really, who can get actual reindeer? And buffalo are such ornery creatures, who seem to poop their bodyweight every day) and setting out every evening, to administer the legendary D’Catur Cheer to anyone we come across on the night streets. “Have you been naughty, or nice?” I will boom cheerily, yet with an edge of menace, as they are handed up to me by the monkey elves, shrieking. “And what would you like from Santa’s bulging sack?” I add. Of course, most people are too hysterical at this stage to reply, so I reach into my bulging sack and give them whatever my hand falls on. It may be balls, or even a stiff wicket (I adore cricket) and a bat, but may just easily be something else with amusing sexual innuendo possibilities.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, holiday tours in Cool Cape May
any cultures have a tradition of going house to house during midwinter celebrations, and I wonder how much of it stems from a human curiosity to see how our neighbors live. A Christmas visit lets you see all the holiday decorations. After all, in AD 300, there was no HGTV to show you what an exuberant Roman homeowner could do with more money than taste, but there were “open house” celebrations for Saturnalia. Lords and ladies of Medieval France had no Pinterest boards on which they could post their tasteful tablescapes, but they could invite the locals in for games of dice at Christmas, when the royal monopoly on gambling was lifted. In Renaissance Milan, only sickness would excuse one from sampling the hospitality of Duke Ludovico Sforza during the Twelve Days of Christmas. Attendance was almost compulsory, but at least he would be bringing out his best food, including his Instagram-worthy panettone, to impress local celebrities like Leonardo de Vinci. In 1962, Jacqueline Kennedy showed Americans
what their expensive restoration of the White House had bought with a televised tour that was a huge hit. Since then, camera crews have brought us inside the White House almost every Christmas. And in Cape May, we have the Christmas Candlelight House Tours. The Candlelight Tours are guided walking tours offering you a chance to get inside some of the prettiest places in town, specially decorated for the holidays. The tours run from 5:30 to 8:30 and feature carolers, strolling musicians, and hospitality centers with warm beverages and baked treats. In addition, you get access to the Emlen Physick
Estate, and to the exhibit, An Old-Fashioned Christmas: Holiday Traditions through the Years, in the Carroll Gallery. Tickets are $30 for adults, $20 for children ages 3-12. Limited trolley shuttles are available. Call 609-8845404 or 800-275-4278 for reservations — tours often sell out. Make sure you are buying tickets for the right tour — you want the tour that takes you inside. Pick up a copy of This Week in Cape May as soon as you get to town and check out the schedules for additional tours. You can get your tickets at Washington Street Mall Information Booth. There’s the Cheery Cherry House Christmas Tour, boasting “more than a dozen beautifully decorated rooms throughout this 167-year-old, privately-owned home at 637 Hughes Street.” Tickets are $10. The Combination Trolley/ Physick Estate tour is a 45-minute trolley ride through the historic district combined with a 45-minute tour of the estate. Tickets are $22 for adults, $14 for children. There are Evening Yuletide Tours, Holiday Lights Trolley Rides, Lamplighter Tours, and more.

Gayle Stahlhuth of East Lynne Theater Company reviews the return of Warren Beatty
t a New York City screening of Rules Don’t Apply, Warren Beatty, Alden Ehrenreich and Lily Collins talked after the film. Beatty said, “Making a film is like vomiting. It builds inside, and then just has to come out.” Beatty wrote the screenplay, directed and portrayed Hughes. He’s not taken on these challenges since Bulworth in 1998. Beatty’s infatuation with Howard Hughes began when he saw him in a hotel lobby almost 50 years ago. He began worked on the screenplay in earnest seven years ago, and five years ago, casting began, with many stops and starts. He assembled a stellar cast that includes Alec Baldwin, Martin Sheen and Candice Bergen, each only appearing for a few minutes. The film covers 1958-1964, when Hughes was living at the Beverly Hills Hotel, setting up screen tests at RKO for young women, and trying to control what happens to TWA. Marla Mabry (Lily Collins) has been selected by Hughes’ scouts to come to Los Angeles for a screen test. She is accompanied by her
Warren Beatty as Howard Hughes mother (Annette Bening). At the airport, they are met by one of Hughes’ chauffeurs, Frank Forbes (Alden Ehrenriech). An immediate connection is made between Marla and Frank, which is kept at bay by their religious upbringings, and Hughes prohibiting any romantic or sexual relationships between his employees. Hughes’ right-hand man (Matthew Broderick) is around to see that everyone plays by the rules — and many times helps Hughes avoid them. FYI, Ehrenreich will play Han Solo in the 2018 Star Wars movie. The movie is beautifully shot in locations
that retain the 1950s-1960s look and details to costuming is exceptional. The music works throughout, including an original song, “Rules Don’t Apply,” and two Mahler symphonies. There are many things right about the film, but it falters. One scene will be witty, thoughtful, wonderful, and the next is frustrating. The acting is spot on, and Beatty makes an excellent Hughes, but perhaps there is too much “Hughes” in this romantic comedy-drama. Or too much romance, and not enough “Hughes.” I’m not sure what sort of a film Beatty was trying to make. In Melvin and Howard (1980) with Jason Robards playing Hughes, the focus was on Melvin (Paul Le Mat) and his wife (Mary Steenburgen) and this worked. Perhaps Beatty wanted an excuse to portray Hughes, and to look back to his own time spent in LA over 50 years ago when he appeared in television’s The Loves of Dobie Gillis (1959-1960) and his first major film, Splendor in the Grass (1961). I’ve enjoyed Beatty’s work as a director, writer, and actor for decades. This isn’t his best work, but it’s good to see him at it again.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady When my mother-in-law turned 70 this summer my wife and I threw her a big party. Her other two children not only didn’t offer to help pay for it but when asked to contribute ignored my wife. At Thanksgiving dinner (which we hosted because we have the bigger house), my mother-in-law had the gall to ask me if we were going to throw them a 50th wedding anniversary party. I told her to ask her other two kids. We haven’t spoken since and my wife is begging me to relent. Where does this stop? — Pickpocketed Dear Pickpocketed It would appear that you and your wife are victims of the adage about kindness being mistaken for weakness. The passiveaggressive way to avoid being asked to do
Wise answers to perplexing questions
things is to become inept at doing them. The Answer Lady envisions a party with no alcohol, a bag of chips and a tray of stale cookies. Oh, and two balloons for decoration. Of course, you would become a pariah and that would fall back on your wife. The Answer Lady fears you might have to swallow the bullet on this but suggests you rent a local restaurant or a section of it. Keep it simple, limited guest list. As to the future, start thinking about how you and your wife can distance yourself from this onus.
Dear Answer Lady I am invited to my girlfriend’s house for Christmas. Her family will be there and I want to ask her to marry me right in front of them. Down on my knees. Do you think I should pop the question just before dessert is served or should I hide the ring in the dessert and wait for her to find it? Also, I need new clothes for the day. Where do you suggest I go? — Wannabe Betrothed Dear Betrothed The Answer Lady is not a fan of the public proposal — period. However, if that is your intent, for God’s sake do not hide the ring in her food or drink. The Answer Lady has seen the downside of this personally — case in point, at a small dinner party Christmas Eve the fiancé thought it would be great to hide the ring in the ice cube of the lady in question’s drink. The cube didn’t melt fast enough for the groom’s purposes. He kept urging her to finish her drink and then she nearly choked on it. Keep it simple. As to your attire, go to Galvanic or Cotton Company, depending on your style.

Bird Droppings
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
J
ust this morning, grumpy as only an old man can be, I sat out on our back porch to watch birds at the feeder and in less than 10 minutes found my spirits elevated by the gravitydefying antics of nuthatches, the SWATteam coordination of jays, the industrious pilfering of squirrels and the snatch-andbolt tactics of chickadees. Buying someone a bird feeder doesn’t just brighten the holidays, it gives the gift of levity and entertainment all year. Yes, all year. Birds can be attracted to your feeders all year. Hint for buying that perfect feeder. If you care to limit the seed-hogging proclivities of squirrels, buy a feeder with a built-in squirrel deterrent — this can mean a metal guard between the ground and the feeder or a feeder set within a wire cage whose openings are large enough to accommodate small birds but too small for squirrels and larger birds, which sadly include cardinals One of the most popular of feeders is
the tube, a clear plastic cylinder with multiple seed ports and perches. The come in assorted sizes to be attractive to different birds. Falling into a class of feeders known as “exclusionary feeders,” tube feeders are most attractive to smaller more nimble birds like chickadees, but our Carolina wren and white-breasted nuthatch have adopted tactics that make it work for them. They are easy to fill and hang. Key to your bird feeding success is seed type. Black oil sunf lower seed is
universally accepted. Even our goldfinch appear to prefer it to the expensive thistle seed touted as the go-to seed type for goldfinch and siskins which are akin to goldfinches with stripes. Of course there’s no harm in having a separate thistle feeder. Thistle feeders are tube feeders with tiny ports to keep your expensive thistle seed from pouring onto the ground. To accommodate ground feeders like sparrows and juncos we toss a can of mixed seed onto the ground. Spread among the dead f lower stalks, it discourages blackbirds and starling that prefer uncluttered places. Spread this way, you may find that come next spring, you’ll have a nice crop of millet growing up between the daffodils. Seeds for free. For expert advice about feeders and bird feeding, I recommend talking to the experts at Cape May Bird Observatory, 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point. The CMBO shop also has the region’s finest selection of optics, bird books and regionally-calibrated bird-related stuff.

ZILLOW REVIEW... “How lucky and serendipitous that we that we connected with Kim Gipple at an open house! We are now the very happy owners of an exquisite home in Cape May, and we do not think that the complicated process would have gone as well without her. She was not only extremely knowledgeable of the area, but had multiple contacts for each step of the way, from Inspectors to Surveyors, to Utilities providers. She was honest, thoughtful, and caring, and always felt that she had our best interests at heart. We highly recommend her, and feel that she is a friend, as well as an exceptionally competent agent.”
