Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

T

he gnarliest, angriest presidential campaign in living memory (or any other memory) ensured that 2016 was, for many people, a less-thanstellar year. So I’ve been thinking over some good things that happened in the last 12 months, specifically in our little bubble by the sea. Because, as the legends of Monty Python famously sang, it’s a fine idea to “Always look on the bright side of life.” I’m preparing to host a social event next week at Exit Zero Cookhouse for a young entrepreneurs group that was inspired by a series of articles by Diane Stopyra which were published in our color issues in 2014. Curtis Bashaw, grand poobah of Congress Hall and its associated properties, was intrigued by the notion of encouraging these young business people to realize they were the future of the town and to start making their voices heard. So in the last year or so, Curtis and I have been trying to keep the momentum going. He’s held a couple successful events at Beach Plum Farm, inspiring people to come up with exciting new ideas that will keep this town a

great place to visit AND live in. Next week, about 50 of us will be getting together to eat, drink and come up with some fun new ideas. It’s a task that I think will be even more satisfying given we are about to enter what I think will be a new era of public engagement in Cape May, thanks to the November election, which put a new mayor, Chuck Lear, in City Hall (another reason for optimism in 2016). I was also excited to see Exit Zero Jazz Festival continue to grow, thanks to founder Michael Kline’s ability to attract world-class

talent to this little place — seeing living legend Wynton Marsalis eat dinner at the Cape May Point home of Dave and Chris Clemans was another November highlight. The completion of Rotary Park was another big addition to Cape May’s plus column, particularly since a great deal of the money was raised by the public, thanks to the new annual Ice Ball at Congress Hall. Seeing the park illuminated for Christmas underlines what a quality addition it is. And speaking of Christmas, I think we can all agree that it’s becoming a season in itself. There were around 2,000 people packed into Congress Hall for last week’s tree-lighting. That should mean a whole lot of new business for local establishments. Maybe the traditional hospitality nights should be switched so that they run into this big event, as opposed to happening one week later. Just a thought... The Exit Zero Burns Supper is on Saturday, January 28 at Carney’s. Tickets are $35 and can be bought at ezstore.us or by calling 609-770-8479. Hopefully it will signal the beginning of a great 2017 for Cape May.

The Old Fogey

C

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

hange of plan for Santa this year. I am sick and tired… I mean HE has communicated that he is sick and tired of squeezing down your inadequate chimneys and then having to attempt to exit the same way. And don’t get me started on those central air vents. Suffice to say that you simply do NOT want hear an enraged possum behind you in one of those things when your hands are stuck at your sides. The little pest bit me right in my sack. From here on in, leave your front doors unlocked, a glass of single malt and a chocolate chip cookie in plain view, or the elves will make free with their bolt cutters and you will awake not only to a lovely gift but also whichever of Cape May’s nocturnal creatures have taken advantage of the wide-open door to shelter from the cold. This may include mice, squirrels, badgers, the occasional bear or, worse, a Wildwooder: you know how hard it is to rid one’s house of an infestation of those. While I get a kick out of Christmas, I reserve my special enthusiasm for Hogmanay, with an added delight of saying

“Happy Hogmanay” to all, in the hope that some ignoramus will say “what’s that?” and I will strike them on the ear with my silvertopped walking cane, or politely say “can you hold Young Albert for a moment?” — whereupon savagery ensues. Hogmanay is when visitors to the D’Catur Mansion can indulge in fine drink, high-fat food and the inevitable violent mood swings that follow too much single malt. Tears, laughter, fisticuffs and declarations of undying love can all occur in a single minute. “Wha’s like us?” I shout as the New Year

arrives, and the smarter among you shout back: “Damn few, and they’re aw deid!” Then we dance, a rich mix of traditional jigs, line-dancing, Riverdancing, tap and the Pasodoble as introduced to Cape May by Juan “Spanish Fly” Martinez. The only thing not permitted is self-conscious disco, particularly the pointy-finger thing. Anyone seeking to add a note of irony to Cape May’s Hogmanay will go the way of all hipsters: to the hold of the Concrete Ship. Of course, the morning after can be rough, and I suppose that entering a new year ravaged by guilt, hangover and vague memories of unspeakable behavour is not entirely wise. That is why I tend to keep on drinking (with the occasional swig from my pewter hip flash of opium) until February 1, as I think new years are best approached cautiously, and with great care, until we have their measure... 2016, for example, would have been better spent inebriated from start to end. Which I essentially did, except for an unfortunate sober day in November, which I do not intend to repeat.

The Activity Column

I

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, Christmas storytelling

t gets late early in December. The cold, dark world conspires to get you snuggled up and into your jammies. It’s the perfect time for stories. Christmas was born of stories. From the moment the angels brought the glad tidings to the shepherds, the Nativity story captured human imagination. Retelling the tale is part of the holidays. Historians can prove that stories were a midwinter tradition as early as Shakespeare’s era, when he wrote that, ”A sad tale’s best for winter.” “Old wives,” otherwise known as mothers and grandmothers, told “winter’s tales” to keep their children amused as they gathered together by the warmth of the fire. Ghost stories were most popular, but there were also love stories, cautionary tales, and comedies. Old wive’s tales were enriched with bits of wisdom, like an apple a day keeps the doctor away, chicken soup helps healing, and counting sheep helps you sleep. (Science has proven that the old wives were on to something.) Washington Irving wrote of the storyteller as treasured party guest in 1819’s A Christmas Dinner, Hans Christian Anderson

broke hearts with The Little Match Girl in 1845, and Charles Dickens took Christmas storytelling to a whole new level with A Christmas Carol in 1843. The Nutcracker ballet let Christmas stories take flight in 1892. C.S. Lewis brought Christmas magic back to Narnia in 1950, and J.K. Rowling sprinkled Christmas through her Harry Potter saga. These stories are not about Christmas, but they lean on it to tell of family, friends and hope. You can make your own Christmas story, perhaps at the Ugly Sweater Ball at Fins on Saturday, December 17 at 10. Prizes will be awarded for the ugliest, funniest, and most

awkward sweaters. Or, find a Cape May storyteller. The local branch of the library offers Storybook Hour every Wednesday at 10:30am. Elaine’s presents Scrooge — the Musical through December 30. Visit elaine’scapemay.com for more information. One Christmas Carol is Cape May Stage’s version of the Dickens classic. Suitable for ages six and up, One Christmas Carol plays weekends through December 31. Visit capemaystage. org for ticket information. Over at Congress Hall, catch dinner ($59) or lunch ($39) at the Blue Pig and see This Wonderful Life. The East Lynne Theater Company and the MidAtlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities tell stories on the “Ghosts of Christmas Past Trolley Rides,” featuring “classic American ghostly tales, told in a dark trolley” with the “the twinkling lights” of the town peeking through the windows. The 30-minute rides begin and end at the Washington Street Mall Information Booth, and the trolley is heated. Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children ages 3-12. Call for reservations and information, 609-884-5404.

The Movie Column

O

scar season has begun! There are a lot of exceptional movies out there that I know will be in the running. One getting plenty of attention is Manchester by the Sea. This is a remarkable story, deeply moving and quietly powerful. Lee Chandler (played by Casey Affleck) is a character we’ve all seen, especially if you spend any time at your local tavern. Sure, you’ve seen him — in the corner, alone, not talking to anyone. You could almost say he was brooding. You could certainly say he can’t handle his alcohol. Eventually, he will erupt and lash out — maybe after several hours (or days) of just sitting there. Lee’s brother, Joe (played by Kyle Chandler) had always suffered from a weak heart. He dies suddenly, leaving behind a 17-yearold son, Patrick (Lucas Hedges). Lee makes the short trip from Boston to the family hometown, Manchester by the Sea, to settle the affairs of his brother. It is a homecoming curiously clouded by Lee’s own mysterious past. All is unveiled in well-structured flash-

By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

Casey Affleck in Manchester by the Sea backs. There is not much family left for Lee and his nephew, Patrick. Joe’s wife has been separated from their son for many years. In his will, Joe names Lee as the guardian for his son. Lee cannot believe his brother would trust him that much — almost to the point of him refusing to take the job. Lee has been separated for years from his own wife, played beautifully by Michelle Williams. Their life together was devastated by severe tragedy, unspeakable pain and suffering. Lee’s life subsequently has been

steeped in regret and inner turmoil. At some points you want to shake him, at other times you just want to drive him to the nearest AA meeting. In any case, you are compelled to feel and react to his plight. So let’s talk Oscar (this film will get probably more than one nomination). For me, the recent Jeff Bridges’ film Hell or High Water stands out as well. But of course, as you know, the Academy has been selecting more films (not less) to offer up as best picture. I’ve seen some that are Oscar worthy. Sully maybe, Birth of a Nation perhaps, Zootopia for sure! And there are a lot of possibilities in theaters now like Loving, Fences and Moana — so I better get going! What about you? What have you seen that you think is a contender? Email tomhsims@aol.com. I’ll register your comment here so you can say you predicted it! Like Marlene, who says Hacksaw Ridge, while disturbingly bloody, will likely get a nomination. Lastly, save the date for our annual Oscar party — February 26, 2017!

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My best friend has her eye on a man who has a reputation as a gigolo. Every woman he has dated, from what I’m told, has just come off a bad break-up or marriage and stood to gain financially. My friend is kind-hearted and I don’t want to see her hurt. She and her husband drifted apart. To tell you the truth, I think she got bored and is having a midlife crisis. Is there nothing I can do to save her from this cad? — Train-wreck Watcher Dear Watcher There’s nothing you can do. What you can do is stand by her when it all goes wrong, if it does. What you can do is warn her to keep an eye on her bank account and not be stupid. However, what she does

Wise answers to perplexing questions

with that information is her business. The best thing you can do is make sure the new love interest doesn’t drive a wedge between you. Meet for cocktails every Wednesday at the Brown Room — no men allowed. Apps and cocktails are what the doctor ordered. Don’t talk about him. Keep it light. And if he starts showing up — uninvited — move the party somewhere else. Dear Answer Lady I recently remarried and love my new wife very much but she has a daughter

whose behavior is troubling. She stays at the house on weekends when she is home from college. She stumbles in at three in the morning and when my wife tries to get her out of bed Monday morning to go back to school, she hurls and screams a stream of verbal abuse. College is on recess now for the holiday and I fear this will be a nightly occurrence. I am European and this would never happen in my country. I don’t want to interfere, but is this normal American behavior? — Euro Appalled Dear Appalled You might have to have to take them to breakfast at Uncle Bill’s Pancake House. After breakfast, have a talk with both of them, IF your relationship with the daughter is good. Otherwise, it is appropriate to call to your bride’s attention that her daughter might have an alcohol problem. As to the question regarding normal American behavior, the Answer Lady thinks people are people irrespective of boundaries. Focus on your problem and dealing with it before it interferes with your marriage.

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

S

orry to say you missed a good walk at South Cape May this past Monday. I know you missed it because Warren Cairo and I were the only people standing in the lot at 7:30am. Your absence was understandable, given the threat of rain. Typically, the walks end the Monday before Thanksgiving. We decided to add two dates in December to see whether there were enough birds to warrant a seasonal extension. There were. Kind of reminds me of the 1970s, when everyone believed that fall migration in Cape May ended in September. It took years to convince people that October and November were equally bird-rich. Different bird species, but just as rich. So it is in December. Waterfowl abound, seabirds are migrating in droves. One highlight on Monday’s walk was the flock of about 100 snow geese that flew over; another was the pair cackling geese that came in with a flock of wild Canadas. Also worth mention are the tundra swan trio lingering in the dune crossover pond. You could hear them whooping from the parking lot. Great sound.

There was a surprising sighting of bluegray gnatcatcher foraging in the grass. While these insect-eating birds arrive as early as March, December is pushing it. Lucky for us, the morning showers were followed by warm breezes, not bitter westerly winds. It appeared healthy. With luck it may linger to the Christmas bird count in late December. Sadly, the Meadows walk is now over until March but Cape May Bird Observatory has a suite of other walks that run through the winter. While the organized hawk watch

is over for the season, the Avalon Seawatch continues into December. With or without official counters, hawk and seabird migration continues through at least December. This year’s raptor count topped out at 36,009 birds, including somewhat oddly one short-eared owl. Dress warmly and savor what most people miss, the late fall hawk migration at The Migration Mainline. Yes I coined that title and it’s most apt. Don’t dawdle — by February, we’ll be seeing northbound migrants and be grateful for them. To learn about scheduled field trips go tobirdcapemay.org for the event calendar or stop by the Northwood Center at 701 East Lake Drive in Cape May Point for a Kestrel Express newsletter. While you are there, check out the new birding trail and hide that offers intimate looks at lots of wintering songbirds and protection from the elements. Other birding hotspots across North America are seasonal, here we just enjoy four-season birdwatching.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

BUNNY is her name because she hops to her food. The hop is from a limp in her back leg, but that just adds to her character. She is also soft and cuddly like a bunny! Although Bunny has a few years under her belt, she has quite the young personality. With Christmas around the corner, don’t wait til Easter to adopt a bunny!

ARI is quite the beauty. With her multicolored coat and piercing green eyes, she is sure to steal your heart! Not only is Ari a looker, she is quite the affectionate snuggler too. She spends most of her days sun bathing in the garden, patiently waiting for someone to take her to her forever home. What more could you want for Christmas?

MAY MAY is just so nice you have to say it twice! She came in as a mother of six and all of her kittens are off to good homes. Now it’s May May’s turn to find a loving family. After giving birth to six, this mother deserves to relax and be loved! Won’t you bring this sweet lady home for Christmas and give her the love she deserves?
