Ramblings From The Editor

O

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

ctober gets a lot of love in this corner of planet Earth. I agree with Vicki Clark, president of Cape May County Chamber of Commerce, who said recently, “Why are all the fall, pumpkin and harvest festivals held in October? I think we have a lost opportunity by not celebrating fall all the way through November.” I love that the weekends this October were packed in Cape May, although the first weekend had four major events going on, which is called, in technical terms, overbooking. But I think it would be a smart idea to try and spread it out. November isn’t overburdened with fun events, which is why we should all be mighty grateful for... The Exit Zero Jazz Festival, which will once again rock the streets of the island (and beyond) this weekend. The festival actually begins tonight (Thursday) in Convention Hall with a Night in New Orleans, a fundraiser for Music Connects, the non-profit wing of the festival, which brings music into the lives

of kids in this county who otherwise might not get the chance to explore their musical urges. On Friday night, the hall will be filled with the “luxurious dimensions” (says The New York Times) of the voice of Lizz Wright, a captivating jazz and gospel singer. On the same night, the Schmidtchen Theater at LCMR High School will host Fourplay, an acclaimed jazz /R&B/pop supergroup. On Saturday afternoon, Convention Hall will host Etienne Charles & Creole Soul

(an exotic mix of Afro-Carribean rhythms) and Brian Blade and the Fellowship Band. In the evening, Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latino Orchestra will give the hall an intoxicating aural jolt. Over at the Schmidtchen on Saturday night, 2017 Grammy winner Gregory Porter will be treating the packed theater to the sweet sounds of one of the most soulful jazz voices in the business. Those are the headliners, but for many people the magic of his festival is the fun you have hopping around the island’s bars, listening to a diverse collection of music that offers much more than jazz — festival organizer Michael Kline is a master at mixing up a compelling lineup that gets the island jumping. The best value is spending $55 on a Hops Pass, which gives you access to 43 — count ’em! — performances at all of the club venues (which don’t include Convention Hall and the Schmidtchen). You can buy the passes at the Convention Hall box office. Hope to see you around town!

Dish Of The Week Oysters Rockefeller were first seen on menus in 1899 by Jules Alciatore at Antoine’s famous restaurant in New Orleans. It later became all the rage during the Roaring Twenties, when people would pile into speakeasies and soak up the booze with bite-sized finger foods instead of sitting down for a heavy meal. So this weekend, before heading out on the town to be-bop the night away to some seriously fantastic jazz bands, stop by the Ebbitt Room for a tiny taste of the ’20s. Their oysters rockefeller, baked with applewood smoked bacon, spinach and anise cream is all that jazz and just what you need to get the party started.

WINE OF THE WEEK

Cape May Lager Lager ABV: 4.8% Cape May Brewing Company

Le Fervent Rhône Valley Syrah Sale: $13.99 from Collier’s Liquor Store 202 Jackson Street

Clean. Crisp. Approachable. Cape May Lager is a craft lager brewed with premium German Pilsner and Melanoiden Malts, and a gentle touch of noble Saaz hops - lending a soft, clean bitterness to this brew.

Beneath bold layers of blue fruit exist nuances of licorice, spice and herbs. Enjoy with rich cuisine as well as subtly flavored dishes.

Cocktail Of The Week The Rickey is a highball drink made with either boubon or gin, half of a lime squeezed dropped into a glass and topped with club soda. It was one of the hip cocktails drank during times when you didn’t have every flavored liquor and a million different drink combinations at your disposal. The times were simpler. And so were the drinks. F. Scott Fitzgerald popularized the gin rickey in his classic novel “The Great Gatsby” — and now Roaring Twenties themed parties are all the buzz. So, where can you slosh down a Prohibition-era style cocktail and swing to the stylish sound of jazz this weekend? How about the Boiler Room. With its speakeasy vibe and delicious cocktails, you’ll be thrown into another age.

ENTER THE CLIPART CONTEST This is the Roaring Twenties Issue, which is why we hid a dancing little couple in an ad. Enter in one of two ways: 1. Send an email to info@exitzero.us (write CLIPART CONTEST in the subject line) with the name of the ad that contains the clipart, including your name, address and telephone number; 2. Mail your entry to Exit Zero Clipart Contest, 109 Sunset Boulevard, Cape May, NJ 08204. Include your name and address. Entries by November 16. One winner picked at random will receive a $20 Exit Zero gift certificate. The winner’s name will be posted on our Facebook page each Friday. This is the size of the image you’re looking for!

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

am not one for all this Roaring Twenties malarkey. That’s not to say I did not have a fine old time in the 1920s (apart from that time I put my back out doing The Charleston), but really, not everyone was a Flapper, or drove long open-topped cars with abandon, while hooting a rubber bulb horn that made an “aroooo-gah!” noise. Actually, now I think about it, most everyone in Cape May did those very things. At least I did, myself and my pals Topper, Topsy, Amelia and Henry. And I did smoke with great style and panache, using a three-footlong long cigarette holder. But it was not the time of licentious fun the newspapers might have you believe. I remember Ma D’Catur slapping the top hat right off my “foolish head” when I stumbled in one night with an armful of gramophone discs, intent on partying all night. Cape May of course had the famous (indeed infamous) Savoy club, where the top jazz musicians used to play til the wee small hours (well, until 10pm at least) and where Al Capone’s boys would deliver cases of liquor

disguised as soda. He was a terrible little man, that Capone: stood no higher than my waist, but carried a Chicago Piano everywhere he went. If you look closely at the Brown Room walls, down behind the bar, you can still see where he shot the place up one night when Topper unwisely said, “Mr Capone… I swear, you are small enough you could ski on a snowflake!” to great tittering and then a loud hail of bullets. It was the last time Topper made that particular joke, I can tell you. Or any joke, now I think of it. Still, we danced a frenzied flea hop in his honor, and

even Al joined in, which showed that he had a sense of humor, if not respect. Of course, there was a backlash, and Cape May’s stuffed-shirt elders declared the whole thing to be “vulgar”, “depraved” and “a bad example to be setting for those poor impressionable fools in Wildwood.” I can’t disagree with any of that, but was sad to see it all come crashing to a halt the night Flappers were legally banned in our fair city. You didn’t know? I assure you it’s there in cold black and white, sandwiched between Ordnance 90276: “There shall be no chimpanzees in Cape May,” and the old regulation that limits the smoking of large cigars “to those people who can talk at length about Kipling’s The White Man’s Burden for over three minutes without realizing they are in fact a racist and should simply shut the hell up.” That did not stop the annual Secret Flapper party, details of which are top secret, but that happens next Saturday at the offices of this periodical. If you have never seen a 250lb Scotchman dressed like a flapper, I urge you to go along. And bring smelling salts.

H

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, getting into the spirits of things

alloween is over, but spirits still abound in Cape May. Seek them out with one of Cape May’s year-round tours, like MAC’s Ghosts of Cape May Trolley Tour for $12 (capemaymac.org). Or explore another kind of spirits at Nauti Spirits Distillery. Distillation has been linked to spirits for centuries. Some historians credit Aristotle for linking the terms because, in 327 BC, he claimed that distilled beverages introduced spirits into the body of the drinker. Superstition in the Middle Ages held that distilling releases spirits, leading to the custom of pouring out a drink “for the angels” when a cask is opened. Alchemists who first mastered distillation compared the vapors they collected in the process to ghosts. The spirit was the pure essence of the substance. Think back to science class, or to the last pot of water you boiled, and you’ll understand the comparison. The word “al-ghawl” meaning “demon” or “ghoul” may have given us the word “alcohol.” Or, the word may derive from “al-koh’l,” which refers to paints cre-

ated through a process akin to distillation. As is often the case when spirits are involved, things are a little fuzzy. The Oxford English Dictionary leans toward “al-koh’l” as the root, and notes that both “alcohol” and “spirits” to refer to intoxicating beverages came into wide English usage in the 16th century. Today, spirits refers to distilled beverages with more than 20 percent alcohol and no added sugar. At the Nauti Spirits Distillery, you can go behind the stills to see alchemy at work. Take a $12 tour of the farm and production facilities at 916 Shunpike Road in North

Cape May. Learn about the Jersey-fresh sweet potatoes in the vodka and the locally grown juniper in the gin. Learn as much or as little as you like — there’s no quiz. Finish up with a taste of their gin, rum or vodka in the inviting bar area, where expert bartenders will mix up tasty, complex cocktails. For the sake of science, you can choose to sip the spirits straight, but with so many seasonal enhancements available, consider something special. The Fairytale Flip is hit with pumpkin spice lovers. The Malum includes apple syrup. Bring your own snacks. Stop at the gift shop before you leave — the distinctive bottles make a nice hostess gift. If your tastes lean to the fermented, visit Cape May Brewing Company to learn about the magic that brings us beer. They offer free tours — self-guided whenever the tasting room is open, guided according to the schedule at capemaybrewery.com. Learn their “three guys and a beer” story and sample the brews and sodas in their tasting room. Visit the Brewtique to take home select bottled beer.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I saw my brother kissing another woman in a car in a parking lot. I was so upset, I dropped my groceries. I am very close to them — we celebrate all the holidays together. Vacation together. Our children play at each other’s houses. I’m not good at hiding things. Do I tell my sister-in-law who is like a sister to me? They have three small children and recently lost another in childbirth.I feel helpless and guilty. What should I do? — Compromised Dear Compromised The person you should be talking to is your brother, urging him to either cease and desist or do the right thing. What you should NOT do is go to your sisterin-law. You will forever be known as the

Wise answers to perplexing questions

messenger and you know what happened to the original messenger? Resist the urge to confess. You are not the one at fault here. Invite your brother to lunch at Harbor View and present the facts. When he denies it, tell him you must distance yourself from him until he sorts it out. This is a bad time for both of them and perhaps this was his way of trying to forget what happened. Suggest counseling. The knowledge that someone out there knows what he’s up to might force him to reexamine what he’s doing

Dear Answer Lady My daughter is in pre-school and there is a boy who clearly likes her but shows it in bizarre ways, like grabbing her throat when she doesn’t pay attention to him and telling her they can’t be friends any more — which I personally witnessed. When he saw me, he ran to his parents. Next day, all is well. Her teacher says the two are inseparable. She wants to be his friend and naturally gets upset by his behavior. What do you think the best approach is? — Worried Mother Dear Worried Commitment phobic at pre-school? Wow! The thing to do is to turn it around on him. Tell your daughter to inform her new friend the following: “My mommy says if you keep grabbing my throat and trying to hurt me, we can’t be friends any more.” And hope that she can deliver that message and understand why she must stand up for herself and not tolerate bad behavior. She deserves better. Meanwhile, soften all this by taking her to The Original Fudge Kitchen and let her pick out her favorite treat.

The Movie Column

T

“The Florida Project” reviewed by Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

his movie is Beasts of the Southern Wild, but just a little further south. The Florida Project is a story of the cruelty of poverty and the havoc made by poor choices. Halley is a young mom living in the Magic Castle. No, no not a magic castle but a rundown motel by that name. It’s all she can afford as she buys cheap knock off perfume and re-sells it to tourists throughout the area. She lives just a stone’s throw away from Disney World, but it may as well be half a planet away. She lives with her seven-year-old daughter, Moonee. A belligerent but endearing kid, she gets into (and sometimes out of) a lot of trouble. Moonee’s playground is not the amusement park mecca close by. No, it is the absurdly shaped souvenir stores or ice cream stands or restaurants nearby. She begs for money to get an ice cream cone to share with her friends. The kids visit a nearby abandoned ghetto of condos — and of course set fire to it. Bria Vinaite plays Halley. She is crude —

Willem Dafoe in The Florida Project no, wait. That’s flattering. So choose a word worse than that and fill it in here. She’s a wretched soul, a nomad wandering through a wasteland of abject poverty. Brooklyn Prince plays her daughter. It’s difficult for me to find words to describe this kid’s abilities. Similar to Quvenzhané Wallis, the small child from the 2012 Academy Award nominated film, Beasts of the Southern Wild, this kid is an amazing talent. This film never quite gets to the level of allegory as

that movie, but it is a stunning portrayal of how so many live in the shadows of opulent resort towns. Willem Dafoe is the maintenance manager at the castle. It’s an unforgiving job. Constantly hunting down rent money, moving tenants for the night to nearby motels so they don’t establish residency. All this on top of painting, keeping kids safe from predators, fixing ice machines and monitoring the security system. It seems a neverending job. Life at the motel is trudging along. It is summer and the kids are out of school. The adults work or play video games all day or do whatever to pass the time. The maintenance guy is part janitor and part saint. Halley pushes the limits of bottom-feeder enterprise. Her home, or should I say motel room home, is badly jeopardized. Look for Oscar buzz around this movie. If you don’t think people live like this, then you live it in a bubble. This film will help you stay grounded and appreciate all that you have.

Bird Droppings

I

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

depicted in your field guide — a book every Cape May home deserves to have. My favorites include Kenn Kaufman’s Birds of North America, a photo-driven guide organized with beginners in mind. The Sibley Guide to Birds is another favorite, lavishly and accurately illustrated, accompanied by terse and insightful text. This guide was written in Cape May Point and you can buy your copy there at the Northwood Center of Cape May Bird Observatory. One of the Sibley guide’s most com-

pelling attributes is the consistent presentation of material and comparability between similar species. I recall the first time I showed Roger Tory Peterson, aka the dean of American birding, some of David’s illustrations. Said Peterson, “He [David] certainly has a marvelous sense of shape, doesn’t he? “Yes,” I couldn’t help agree. He does. We own about eight Sibley guides ourselves, one in the bookcase, one in the kitchen, one in each car, one in the other, one in the bathroom, one in my office and a couple of floaters that are often in the hands of the owners. But YOU need at least ONE to learn the birds of this special place and to wow your visitors. Who knows, the next Roger Tory Peterson could be the grandchild coming down for Thanksgiving dinner. Yes, it’s fine to serve turkey. To see a live turkey, try driving down Sea Grove Avenue on your way to Bunker Pond. There is a small flock that frequents the area.

f you live in Cape May, you are embedded in North America’s greatest outdoor classroom. Birds are everywhere, all the time, along with natural props to engage people of all ages. Other natural areas are not so fortunate. I teach an introduction to birding course in Maine and finding birds is a struggle. Here, I just step out the door and have to triage my sightings. Waterfowl are a great subject for beginners. They stay in the open, are generally tolerant of people and have field marks that are easily noted. A trip to the hawk watch platform will put you within a binocular scan of five to eight species. If you ask one of the seasonal interpreters to train a Swarovski spotting scope on a wigeon or gadwall or northern pintail, you’ll get a searing look at some of the planet’s most rakish birds. Who needs to go to travel to Papua, New Guinea to see birds of paradise when there are green-winged teal and hooded merganser minutes from your door. You’ll find all these birds and others
