Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

think we can all agree that, in the last few years, Cape May has upgraded its desirability as a town to visit during the holiday season. For years, a whole bunch of Christmas-themed events have been run by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities, and there’s the annual West Cape May Christmas Parade, which is as old as I am (52, in case you’re wondering). But the month-long Winter Wonderland festival at Congress Hall seriously upped the ante. After a solid, but unspectacular, debut in 2011, the event quickly became a tinseltrimmed juggernaut. As a result, accommodations in Cape May are very hard to find in December, particularly the first weekend, when the parade winds its way through town, and Winter Wonderland makes its debut. These days, Cape May is regularly mentioned as one of the best small towns to visit during the holidays. And that’s wonderful. And yet... I don’t think that some of this

island’s property owners are doing their bit to join in the festivities. There are WAY too many dark houses in the Historic District, which is a damn shame, because taking a MAC trolley tour through those streets would be a lot more fun if homeowners made the effort to attach holiday lights to their properties. Kudos to the local chamber of commerce, who began an annual Light Up Cape May contest, encouraging homes AND businesses to participate in a contest to

find the most creatively illuminated buildings on the island. I understand that, even though Cape May IS so attractive to visit around the holidays, that second home owners might still prefer to lounge by the pool in Florida or wherever they are spending their time. But... it would be a beautiful thing if they were to consider having their home decorated in their absence. There are a few property management companies in town who offer a whole range of services to home owners. The good folks at WKR won’t just sweep away your fallen leaves or unclog your gutters... they have expertise in putting up (and taking down) holiday lights. So, if you WANT to make your home look spiffy but don’t have the time or inclination, call WKR at 609-884-8444. Go on, don’t be a Grinch! Brief ly... the fourteenth (sheesh!) annual Exit Zero Burns Supper will be held on Friday, January 26 at, drum roll... Convention Hall! Tickets are on sale now at ezstore.us. Sign up asap. Until next week...

Dish Of The Week Because bread is such a versatile food, our choice for dish of the week could’ve gone a million different ways. Every restaurant in town has some form of bread on their menu. Whether it’s on the side with butter, holding together your salami and cheese or coated on chicken before being flashed in the fryer, it’s definitely a staple ingredient. Because it’s National Homemade Bread day on Friday, we decided to go sweet then savory. The chocolate chip and banana bread pudding with caramel and hazelnut ice cream from Peter Shield’s Inn is the next best thing since sliced bread.

WINE OF THE WEEK

White Caps Double IPA ABV: 7.50% Cape May Brewing Company

Broadside 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon $14.99 from Sunset Liquors 106 Sunset Boulevard

A soft mouthfeel with a pillowy head and good body, White Caps is CMBC’s stab at crafting a New England style IPA. Featuring Mosaic and Citra hops and brewed with a hefty portion of oats and wheat in the grain bill, this brew is absurdly drinkable.

Fresh boysenberry, peppercorn and sweet tobacco notes highlight ample fruit in the nose. Cassis, green olive, and berry acidity greet the palate with an underlying current of fine tannin, coalescing in a dry, persistent finish. Enjoy with beef or venison.

Cocktail Of The Week If you’re looking for a place to spend your dough, we’ve got just the place you knead to go. Not only do they have the most tasty fresh onion bread in town, they also have a quite cozy setting on cold evenings to enjoy a cocktail. The Lobster House bar is one of our favorite off-season spots. Unlike the summer, you’re actually able to get a seat! Belly up to the bar and order a rye manhattan on the rocks. A warm fire, warm bread and a drink that will warm your insides is the perfect evening on a chily night in November. And rememebr, they say that bread is the perfect food to soak up the booze, so don’t pass on the carbs!

ENTER THE CLIPART CONTEST This is the Bread Issue, which is why we hid a tasty little loaf in an ad. Enter in one of two ways: 1. Send an email to info@exitzero.us (write CLIPART CONTEST in the subject line) with the name of the ad that contains the clipart, including your name, address and telephone number; 2. Mail your entry to Exit Zero Clipart Contest, 109 Sunset Boulevard, Cape May, NJ 08204. Include your name and address. Entries by November 23. One winner picked at random will receive a $20 Exit Zero gift certificate. The winner’s name will be posted on our Facebook page each Friday. This is the size of the image you’re looking for!

The Old Fogey

K

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

now what I detest more than anything in the whole wide world? (Apart from chimpanzees, and a certain type of Wildwooder. Also, Scotchmen. Oh, and grown men who are not professional musicians but who insist on bringing a guitar to a party.) But all of those aside... I hate people who make their own bread, in those little home “bread-making” devices. And yes, I am speaking those caustic little quote marks as well as having my manservant Kitchener write them down. The only people who should be making bread are bakers — those jolly, rotund chaps (and ladies) whose life is devoted to the dough and the yeast. Not some purposeless, bearded plaid-wearing, soft-handed... what are they called? Yipsters, I think. Those people who suffer a crisis of identity and decide to handmake their own shoes, bake their own bread, cut their own hair and craft their own soap. I see them sometimes, shuffling uncomfortably with what look like potatoes on their feet, hair protruding like a carelessly replaced divot of turf after a polo match,

reeking in their ill-fitting clothes. And if they offer you a loaf, you must run away, or better still, take it with both hands and strike them hard across the head with the gnarled little monstrosity. Did you know Cape May was once worldfamous for its bread? Well, technically it was famous initially for its sweetbreads, now I think about it, and those weren’t something you’d want to pop into the toaster then eat with a scraping of butter. Not that we knew that at the time: it was one of those amusing Cape May mixups. And once we had sorted it out,

sent those sweetbread fellas on to somewhere more fitting (Philly, I think it was) we were free to bring the nation’s best bakers here, enticed by cash, the sea air and once in a while the threat of a knobkerry to the sweetbreads, to bake our way into fame and fortune. At our height, we were making a dozen loaves a day, which may not sound much, but such was the mastery in their baking, the purity of the ingredients, and the attention with which they were crafted, that they sold for thousands of dollars each, and were more sought-after than Faberge Eggs. In fact Cape May took the masterful step of divesting itself from regular boring investments, and putting all of the city cash into those loaves. We were, for a short while, wealthier than most European nations, and perhaps got a little cocky. It was while giving dignitaries a tour of the bread vault, that Ernie Hemingway rather let himself — and us — down, by seizing several million dollars’ worth of loaves, and making toast for everyone. It was fine toast, actually.

ape May’s tourism professionals have earned a reputation for quality service year-round, but during the holidays, they really raise their game. According to Lumiere, the singing candlestick in Beauty and the Beast, some people live to serve. Other hospitality experts assert that good service results from careful training, and still others believe that hospitality is a combination of instinct and instruction. “Hospitality” comes from the Latin “hospes” which can mean both “host” and “stranger.” “Hospes” lead us to words like hospital, hospice, hotel — and hostile. Ancient Greeks believed that one showed nobility by treating guests well. Early Indians acted as if the “guest is God.” Most religions require that hosts receive guests with goodwill. But for others, it’s a business. Sometime we forget that there are humans behind the hospitality we enjoy. Cesar Ritz founded a hotel in 1898 that set the standard for luxury. Conrad Hilton started with one hotel in Texas. Ellsworth and Alice Statler started at the Pan-American Exposi-

tion in Buffalo in 1901. Statler agreed with Lumiere, that “Life is service,” but he also valued training. In 1922, the Statlers helped to create the “science” of hospitality by supporting the world’s first school of hotel administration at Cornell University, complete with a training hotel. Students work all of the hotel jobs and also study analytics — where guests come from, how many pounds of scallops they order, what kind of soap they want. They can contrast the attitudes of millennials, who like self-service and communal spaces, with older guests, who want printed maps and room service. Ideally, art and science come together, leading to bathrooms that are

accessible and stylish, beds that are clean and comfortable, attendants who are efficient and friendly. Some people are naturals. The valet parking attendant confronted with a carful of cranky travelers notes the teenager’s Steelers shirt and chats about the game. The desk clerk offers a loaner umbrella before the guest notices the rain. The designer includes an area outside the bar for teenagers to order fries and a soda. These are the people Lumiere celebrates. Celebrate Cape May’s Hospitality Nights on December 7 and 8, from 7-9 pm. Shoppers on Washington Street Mall will enjoy carolers and treats. If you can’t wait, the Holiday Preview comes to the Emlen Physick Estate on Saturday, November 18. Santa flips the switch to light the Christmas Tree and the Physick House will be open for free, self-guided tours. Visitors are encouraged to bring a food item to donate, to pay the hospitality forward. For kids, there are Santa’s Trolley Rides and a chance to visit with old St Nick. Grown-ups will enjoy holiday ghost tales during Ghosts of Christmas Past Trolley Rides.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am having a problem with my co-grandmother. Every time I schedule a lunch or shopping date or play date with our nine-year-old granddaughter, she includes herself in the deal. I end up picking up the check. She never offers to help, but that is not the point. I want this to be OUR time together. I don’t see an easy way to work it out because I must schedule these things in advance because of my daughter’s schedule and my granddaughter, quite naturally, shares the information when Mimi asks what she is doing in the coming weekend. Is there a solution to this without declaring war? — Competing Mimis Dear Competing Ask Mimi what her weekend looks like

Wise answers to perplexing questions

and is she planning to do anything with your granddaughter. When she throws the whole thing back on you, tell Mimi you are taking your granddaughter to MAC’s Breakfast with Santa at Aleathea’s on Saturday, November 25. You were able to get the last two reservations. Suggest to her that perhaps the two of you can take your granddaughter to Barry’s Grand Ole Christmas Opry at West Cape May Borough Hall, Sunday, November 19 and have some of Joe Battle’s Southern BBQ beforehand. Play dates and shopping

can always be a spur-of-the-moment thing. Dear Answer Lady I am hosting my first Thanksgiving dinner for my family. I didn’t want my first dinner to be so big but it seemed to get out of hand. I couldn’t invite one sister and not my brothers, even if one is married with three children. How do I coordinate everything? What if the turkey isn’t done and we end up sitting around for three hours while it cooks? — Frantic “Nouveau Chef” Dear Frantic You could pack the whole bunch up and go to the Merion Inn, but the Answer Lady understands the need to entertain for a crowd. The first thing you need to do is order a fresh turkey from Gaiss’ Market. Hurry up because they have limited quantities. A fresh turkey takes a lot of the guesswork out of the preparation. Just pop it into the oven. Order your pies as well from Gaiss or West Side. Prepare as many of your sides, which you can purchase at LeGates the day before. Then: Breathe. Relax. Enjoy. Whatever goes wrong — laugh it off and they will, too.

The Movie Column

C

“Loving Vincent” reviewed by Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

an you nod off a couple times through nearly a third of a movie and still think it was pretty good? Let’s give this a try. Loving Vincent is the first movie of its kind. It was completely hand painted. You heard me... every frame was painted by a team of more than 100 artists. At first, when I saw the previews to this movie, I thought that the artistry looked impressive but could potentially be annoying to watch. It just looked too busy. I was wrong. The art in this film is captivating. The story centers on Vincent van Gogh, the acclaimed Dutch artist commonly known for cutting off his ear and dying poor. But his death involved a suspicious gunshot wound that he claimed was self-inflicted. This film is a beautifully crafted telling of his story through scenes inspired by his images and told through the people he studied. So why did I sleep through the first third? I like my movies to move me through the action — don’t just tell me what happened. The first third of this film loses itself

Loving Vincent is visually beautiful in too much narration. I guess they thought we would be really impressed by the artistry (which I was) to turn a blind eye to good storytelling (which I didn’t). Despite being lost a little in the beginning, the film recovers. It truly does become most interesting, almost a crime mystery. And then the artistry really becomes impressive because it’s accompanied by a compelling story. It’s hard to get a good radar fix on exactly

how to describe the film. It’s animation, I guess you could say, but it’s also not animation. It truly is artwork. The compositions are the cinematography. No small task. If a new trend started based on this technique, I would be surprised. It looks painstakingly time consuming. In the end, because the storyline recovers, this movie pays off — and it engages in the suspicious death of van Gogh. I want to call Loving Vincent a masterpiece, but I will have to settle for a really good film told in a very innovative way. I’d like to hear what you Cape May artists think of this film. Speaking of local artists, Cape May lost one of its finest recently. Steve Steinmetz passed away last month. He served in the US Marine Corps in Vietnam and was a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. His work is part of The Barnes Foundation, and he has had exhibits at galleries all around South Jersey. In addition to all this, Steve was one of the sweetest guys around. He and I could talk at length about our favorite movies, and he will be missed.

Bird Droppings

I

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

f you look up these days, you cannot help but be impressed by the number of American robins. Between dawn and mid-morning, sheets of robins are blanketing the sky and the air is filled with their bleats and squeals. But these are not local breeders. These are northern birds, some heralding from the Canadian Arctic. Robins are big, chesty, pot-bellied birds that f ly using a rapid series of wing beats punctuated with a close-winged glide during which the birds remain on a straight course. Blackbirds and finches undulate, robins no. They accomplish this gravitydefying feat by keeping their wings partially open during the pause. Another hint for identifying robins is the well-spaced horizontal profile of f locks. Finches, starlings and cedar waxwings cluster in balls. Of course, robins are also identified by their rusty underparts. Unlike some species that have breeding and nonbreeding plumages, robins look showy yearround, although the females are more pale

below. In winter, Cape May and Cumberland counties hosts thousands of robins who feast on berries and increasingly, in these earth-warming days, earthworms who are no longer driven to deeper soil. Christmas Bird Count data has proven that robins are not only wintering farther north but in greater numbers, too. Good news for holly berries who depend upon robins to distribute their seed. Bad news for earthworms, who would prefer not to become

grist for a robin’s digestive mill. At night, the birds roost in holly thickets and marshes. So all winter long you can see sheets of commuting robins mornings and evenings. But the really big f lights are a November treat. Go out and savor them. If you happen to see a smaller robinshaped bird mixed in with the robins, it’s an eastern bluebird Their f light call is a mellow, whistled true-lee. Migrating cedar waxwings may also mix with robins. Smaller and caramelcolored, they resemble croissants on short triangular wings and their call is a hyper, high-pitched vapor thin sigh. Waxwings, too, are drawn to holly berries and feeding f locks resemble animate Christmas tree ornaments. If you don’t have a holly tree, you can turn out for a Cape May Bird Observatory field trip and leaders will be pleased to show case the birds mentioned in this article and many others besides.
