Mystery Photo Contest Know your way around America’s Original Seaside Resort? Every week, we shoot a picture of an island landmark — though, naturally, we are going to be pretty sneaky about it. If you think you know the answer, email info@exitzero.us and write MYSTERY PHOTO in the subject line. Don’t forget to tell us your name and address. Entries must be received by the Monday after publication. If you don’t like emailing, don’t snail mail — it won’t get here in time. Instead, call 609-770-8479. The first name picked from the correct entries wins a 2017 Discount Deck.
MARY BETH TOEWE NORTH CAPE MAY
How long have you been coming to Cape May? My husband and I recently discovered it. Finding ourselves empty nesters we decided we wanted a change from Bucks County, PA. Both of our parents had summer homes in Avalon, and we grew up coming to the shore in the summers. We began our search and fell in love with Cape May. It doesn’t really have an off-season — there are plenty of things to do during the winter. We were also pleasantly surprised to find that even in the summer, if you know your way around, the crowds, traffic and parking really aren’t an issue! We moved permanently to Cape May in October of 2015 and would never think of living anywhere else. Who are you normally with? My husband and I share our home with our one-year-old labradoodle. Our daughter and son-in-law visit often. Favorite thing about Cape May? It’s such a dog-friendly town, and we love the open beaches. It never feels crowded. Favorite restaurants? Here are some. Rusty Nail: love the doggie menu and fire pit. Harpoons on the Bay: great views, fun place to kick back. Bella Vida: great options for vegetarians. Panico’s: great Italian and huge portions. Exit Zero Cookhouse: the best Indian food, love the Kraken! Lobster House: best value in Cape May. We frequent the market for seafood and the little-known diner.
NAUTI WORD OF THE WEEK
scut . tle . butt
Rumor; gossip. Early 19th century — a cask of water on the deck of a ship, providing drinking water. Sailors would traditionally exchange gossip when they gathered at the scuttlebutt for a drink of water.
Mike DeMusz Painting Of The Week
BOOK OF THE WEEK We confer with Cape Atlantic Book Company to bring you a must-read. Here’s a page turner that will go well with a warm pair of PJs and a cup of hot chocolate... The Cape, the fascinating story of a 17th-century British sailor, John McJack, who washes up at the Point, the sole survivor of a shipwreck, and is taken in by Lenni-Lenape indians. The book was written in the 1940s by Charles Whitecar Miskelly, a poor Millville carpenter, but only came to light a couple years ago. It’s a great adventure story and also a compelling history of early Cape May. Read it!
Our Staff Artist Mike DeMusz is creating a painting every week. Here he is at work on the latest. To see the completed work, check out the Exit Zero Facebook page. Better still, visit the Exit Zero Store at 109 Sunset Boulevard, across from the gas station. Even if this particular work is already sold, we have the whole Mike DeMusz inventory of prints here, along with other great Cape May artwork. You can call the store at 609-770-8479. We are open every single day from 10-5 (9-9 in the summer). Or buy online at ezstore.us.

Ramblings From The Editor
W
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
elcome back, dear readers! I hope the six weeks between New Year’s and now were good to you. Some people assume that the Exit Zero gang uses our annual six-week break to head off to Honolulu or Bora Bora — but the truth is, this is a very busy time of year for us. For me, personally, it’s THE busiest time — it’s when I work on several book projects (including Cool Cape May) which all have to be finished by the beginning of March. It’s also a time when we dream up different ideas for our vast empire — you know, the little store and the little restaurant, as well as this little mag. This is going to be a big year for us, since we will be preparing to move across Sunset Boulevard to a sexy new, custom-built HQ that will accommodate all of the above. For those who keep asking about the progress, we likely won’t be actually moving in until the spring of 2018. So you will have to make do with our charming Chattel Village base for now. But there ARE some fun changes coming to all of our operations — I
just can’t tell you what they are yet. But do watch this space. Thanks to the 250 people who turned up for the 13th annual Exit Zero Burns Supper, which was held at Carney’s on Saturday, January 28. The joint was jumping, which isn’t normally something you’d say about Carney’s at the end of January. We were, as always, entertained by the men of the Irish Pipe Brigade, and this year we had TWO bands joining in... local heroes the Bastard Sons of Captain Mey and, from Pittsburgh,
the Bastard Bearded Irishmen. Those guys were a total blast and we hope they will be returning next year. They said they would as we hung out at the Ugly Mug later, but maybe that was just the drink talking. Thanks to your participation, we raised nearly $7,000 for Exit Zero Jazz Festival’s nonprofit program, Music Connects, a great initiative aimed at bringing music to the lives of kids in Cape May County. We moved to Carney’s from the Ugly Mug because we needed to accommodate so many more people. Thing is, we could have sold at least 50-75 more tickets for this event. So, I’m not sure where we are going to be next year, but it may be time to grow the event even more — is Radio City Music Hall available, I wonder? You can squeeze 6,000 in there. Either way, thanks to Joe Carney, his son Sean and all the gang there — serving 250 people at one time is never an easy task. Speaking of good causes, get along to Fins this Sunday at noon for their Sunday Social. Eat and drink in the knowledge that all proceeds go to local nonprofits. Until next week...

Dish Of The Week Casanova, the 18th-century Italian adventurer and prolific lover who reportedly liked to feast on 50 oysters for breakfast, apparently knew what he was doing. The power of the bivalve to get your romantic engines going is more than mere mythology. A team of Italian and American scientists carried out research showing that the secret is some pretty special amino acids, which stimulate the libido. These aren’t the kinds of everyday amino acids you can find in supplements at CVS. So, yes, the oyster IS indeed a magical little mollusk. Armed with this information, and given that we ARE coming up to Valentine’s Day, you should get yourself along to Lucky Bones, who are offering their wonderful Wednesday deal — freshly shucked oysters starting at just $1, featuring local oysters such as the delicious Cape May Salts and other east coast favorites. Their featured oyster of the night changes weekly based on freshness and availability. If you’re not a fan of raw oysters, you can choose between three cooked variations including rockefeller, casino or whatever weekly special the chef is cooking up in the kitchen. Bon appetit!
BEER OF THE WEEK
Open for DINNER from February 10th
WINE OF THE WEEK
Geek Out 3.0 Style: Pale Ale ABV: 5.5% Cape May Brewing Co.
San Martino Prosecco $10.99 from Collier’s Liquor Store 202 Jackson Street
The folks at Cape May Brew Co. experimented with hops for their new El Dorado beer. A light, amber-hued body quickly falls to the background in favor of candied fruit and melons shining bright in center stage, letting the El Dorado hops do all the talking on this one.
This Prosecco is very pleasant and typical with its smaller bubbles and lightly crisp, dry palate. It differs slightly from most Proseccos in that while it is dry it has a small amount of fruit on the finish. Delightful with appetizers, light chicken or seafood dishes or just enjoy on its own as an aperitif. Cheers!

Cocktail Of The Week It’s Valentine’s week and one of our favorite places to share quality cocktails is the Ebbitt Room, located at the delightful Virginia hotel on Jackson Street. Settle into a stool at the buzzy bar (if you’re lucky enough to get one) or if you are looking for a little more intimacy, the side porches or lounge are the perfect spots. What to drink? There is a long list of classic, Prohibition era-inspired options on the cocktail list, but to shake up the romance factor, we are going to go with bartender Helen Linney’s suggestion... the My Valentine cocktail. The recipe is 2 oz citron vodka, 2 oz of the Ebbitt’s housemade pomegranate raspberry syrup and 0.5 oz of Cointreau. Shake the ingredients together and strain into a martini glass. Top it off with champagne and garnish with a raspberry and you have yourself a delicious cocktail. So, yes, you could make it at home, but better still, get one from Helen and tell her congratulations... in the spirit of romance, Helen recently got engaged!

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
am not a fan of televisual news. It has always felt like a bossy stranger turned up on the doorstep to lecture me, in the manner of Jehovah’s Witnesses, though of course the difference is, it’s not acceptable to have Anderson Cooper bundled into the basement to be made into mince pies. I preferred the days where all news was via a telegraph machine, and my faithless manservant Kitchener would bring it to me in a neat roll, along with my Earl Gray tea, toast (lightly browned with a skim of lard and a think layer of Dundee marmalade). So we have returned to those days in the D’Catur Mansion: all news must be factchecked, non-alternative and in no way be presented by that strange skeletal creature with the blonde wig and protruding jaw who seems to be on the televisual machine nightly, snickering about foreigners. From here on in, I am to be greeted with a coded summary of the news that will come in the form of one of five prepared phrases. “Chocks away, sir!” will be the signal for me to
get dressed and venture out into our fair city with a jaunty whistle on my lips. “The forecast is cloudy with a chance of idiots” will see me set out, but with my heavyduty silver-topped walking cane to deal with any maroons I might come across. “Fair to middling!” will mean I walk softly with a big stick and watch the skies for portents of doom/incoming missiles. “Pfffsssw” is an indrawn breath through the lips, along with a shake of the head that warns me of some mischief from Washington that may require the Cape May Militia to be
mustered. The last time we met was 1908, at the Admiral Hotel, and I am not sure where I put my members’ address book, along with the detailed sketches as to how we would invade Philly. Finally, we have “the game’s a bogey”, something my brutal Scotch grandmother used to say when all was lost. In such an event, the shutters will be drawn, select Cape May friends will have seven minutes to reach the D’Catur Mansion. After that we will retreat to the secret underground bunker to wait out the apocalypse, with the aid of a lake of champagne, a thousand gallons of caviar and a library of Irish joke books. Once a decade, a volunteer will be sent up to investigate the state of the world above, and to see if the atomic mutants/marauding apes/alien overlords/Steven Bannon have been vanquished, and report back. In the event all is well, we will return to the surface to establish Cape May as the capital of Earth, with yours truly as a benevolent dictator until such time as democracy can be shown to work.

his week, the theme of the issue is romance, since Valentine’s Day is around the corner. (Have you ordered chocolates and flowers yet? Locally, of course!) So we chatted to Jeff Gernitis about the special allure of acclaimed Cape May restaurant, Peter Shields Inn. Jeff is the managing partner of an ownership group that includes his wife Maria plus Lenny and Kim Gagliardi and Gino and Terry Ciancaglini. The group also owns Fins. Jeff, for the previous five years, OpenTable diners have voted Peter Shields Inn one of the Top 100 Romantic Restaurants in America. What’s your secret? First of all, the ambience — we have five separate dining areas with impeccable décor so there is an intimacy about the seating. We also have two wonderful piano players who love to play special songs for couples who are dining with us. Watching our guests celebrate their special occasion dancing in front of the baby grand is one of the special sights at PSI. What else? I think we have the best service staff in Cape May, so guests are made to feel special. When they walk in the door our hosts will congratulate them if they are celebrating a special occasion, our servers remember their names, ask about family and many times remember what they enjoyed eating the last time they were in, even if it was five years ago. Don’t laugh — it’s happened more than you would guess. Also, I have to say this... in 2016, OpenTable diners also voted us one of the 100 Best Restaurants in America. What’s the most romantic dish at PSI? Obviously, the Cape May Salts for the men! You can call them romantic and functional. Seriously, sharing the English Date Pudding dessert with our homemade vanilla ice cream. Do you guys get many proposals there? Proposals happen all the time at PSI and our staff makes every effort to make the occasion a

memorable experience, usually coordinating beforehand with the nervous groom-to-be. Many times we have multiple proposals during dinner. Ever seen a woman do the proposing at PSI? That’s a question that falls into the category of “What happens at PSI stays at PSI.” Do guests ever ask for over-the-top requests in a bid to impress their partner? To us, there’s no such thing as over-the-top. We have had everything from banner planes flying the coastline (we are oceanfront), diamond engagement rings in desserts and a surprise violinist popping up at the table. My favorite is to watch the man get down on one knee and propose and when she says YES the dining room erupts in applause. What’s the most romantic gesture YOU have been capable of? That’s another “What happens in Cape May...” But, truthfully, finding the courage to propose to my wife Maria as a 21-year-old kid. What’s the restaurant doing for Valentine’s Day? Chef Carl [Messick] will be offering an amazing four-course prix fixe menu all week. Describe your Cape May winter... been busy? We are in the middle of another great winter season. It’s amazing seeing cars lined up in front of PSI on a cold snowny eve-
“To us, there’s no such thing as over the top. We have had everything from banner planes flying the coastline, diamond engagement rings in desserts and a surprise violinist popping up at the table.” — JEFF GERNITIS, PETER SHIELDS INN ning. But like everything in Cape May we do take a winter breather and close Monday through Wednesday in January and February — except for Valentine’s week, when we stay open. What’s the best thing about winter in Cape May? Getting a chance to spend time with people you don’t see during the busy season and actually have a conversation over a cocktail in one of many great lounges in town. Also, watching the sun rise and set over the ocean. And the worst? Parking when it snows... actually, parking any and every day. Your winter prix fixe menu is pretty popular. How long is that running for? We run the $33 prixe fixe January through March
on Thursday and Sunday nights, holiday weekends excluded. And it IS very popular. It’s our way of saying thanks to people that support us all year and provide an opportunity to members of the community that might find PSI a bit expensive during the season. What was your job before you came to Cape May and got into the hospitality business? I was an engineer for 39 years in the defense industry. I started as a junior engineer in 1970 and retired in 2008 as VP of Engineering for a rather large defense company. Our expertise was in “self-protect”. We provided electronic systems that protected aircraft, vehicles, ships and individual soldiers from bad things like missiles and roadside IEDs. How did you end up here? It was my sister Cathy who led me to Cape May in 2010. She had the vision for what PSI would become. Before her passing she positioned PSI for success. Without her efforts it would not be what it is today. What’s the one thing you’d like to do in Cape May this summer that you’ve never gotten around to? Finding a parking space on a Saturday. Take a horse-and-carriage ride with Maria and hear what the driver has to say about our great town.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the beauty and benefits of local art
ake your broken heart, make it into art.” These are the words of the late Carrie Fisher, she of the brilliant, broken mind and the famously generous heart. People my age met her in Star Wars, of course, where she played the brave and capable Leia Organa, a princess who could rescue herself. Her mother was Hollywood royalty and Fisher grew up with fame. She hung out with the geniuses from Saturday Night Live. She married a rock star. We grew up wanting to be like her before we learned just how hard that was. When she revealed her struggles with mental illness, Fisher helped to remove the stigma attached to her disease and taught us what it meant to be really brave. And then she died, suddenly, at 60, and reminded us all that heart disease is still the number one killer of women. Fisher firmly believed in the power of art to soothe a heavy heart. She acted and she sang, but most often, her art was writing. Read her books, including Shockaholic and The Princess Diarist, when you are missing your smartest female friends, and watch Meryl
Streep in Postcards from the Edge, which Fisher adapted from her own novel, whenever you think your family is the most dysfunctional on earth. Find her signature sass in the scripts she doctored, from Hook to Sister Act to Coyote Ugly. And when life gets you downhearted, take her advice, and see if art can help. Take a walk to the Cape May Artist’s Cooperative in West Cape May — get some heart-healthy exercise, and surround yourself with art for your heart. Shop the works of award-winning local artists and you’ll find unique gifts as well as treasures for your
home. Find a symbol of summer to chase away your winter blues. Buy a quirky Valentine’s Day gift, even if you have yet to meet the recipient. The items range in size, style and cost. You can find jewelry, purses, wall art, dishes, ornaments and more. Talk to the artists who work there — talented people are a lot of fun to be around. No two visits are the same, because new artists continue to join, like Karen Yates, whose fanciful fish are created from recycled organic material. Picture one on the walls of your landlocked home, evoking memories of the sea when your vacation is long past. Maybe you’ll even be inspired to create something — classes are in the works for the summer months. The Cape May Artists Cooperative is located at 122 Sunset Boulevard. Winter hours are Friday through Sunday, 10 to 4. On February 11, they celebrate their third anniversary. There’s an open call for artists for the second annual Small Wonders show running March 11 through 26 — check out capemayartistcoop.com for more information. Next week: Presidential Promises

The Movie Column
I
t is good to be back! With so many great films out there running for a Best Picture Oscar, there were plenty of remarkable movies to watch. One of the films I reviewed already I have to admit I watched multiple times. Well, it’s almost embarrassing how many times I had to see it — La La Land was easily one of my favorite films this year. Strangely, my favorite hopeful for Best Picture is Hell or High Water, which I also saw (let’s just say) more than once. Now more on other nominated films. Fences stars Denzel Washington and Viola Davis. With these two accomplish artists, the acting is of course second to none. Set in the 1950s, it follows the life of an African American, blue-collar worker (Washington) struggling to get a fair shot and his wife (Davis) is along for the ride. His anger is understandable and certainly sometimes difficult to watch. The dialogue is an artful and emotional tapestry woven in grit. This is as much a playwright’s film as it is an actor’s film.
By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
Lion is a heartfelt Oscar hopeful Another hopeful is Moonlight. Here we follow the story of a quiet little boy and his troubled journey to manhood. Some scenes are disturbing, and the film does drag a little. However, any shortcomings are balanced by a superb ensemble of actors who portray our protagonist over the course of 15 or so years. The three actors are: Alex R. Hibbert as a child, Ashton Sanders as a teen, and Trevante Rhodes as an adult. Lastly, Lion is a film about a little
boy who is dangerously lost in India. He is abandoned to the streets but eventually finds a home with new parents from Australia. Dev Patel plays the lead role as the adult version of the child whose journey took him very far from home. Patel is becoming one of my favorite young actors. He delivers one of my favorite lines in Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011), and he worked well opposite Jeremy Irons in The Man Who Knew Infinity (2015). But my heart goes out to the actor (Sunny Pawar) who plays the young version of Saroo, the lead character. You feel this child’s fear in your gut. The diversity of this year’s contenders more than makes up for the lack that caused outcry last year — and the tone of the films is just as vast. Join us to talk about all the films at the Cape May Film Festival’s annual awards show party on Sunday at Historic Cold Spring Village. And please join us this Sunday, February 12 (10:30 am to 2:30 pm) at Fins for their annual brunch to benefit the festival!

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am 23 and recently divorced, with a three-year-old daughter. Dating is scary because my only experience was my husband, who was my high school sweetheart. I also worry about bringing a man into my daughter’s life. So, I decided to use eharmony.com. After a few not-so-great dates, I think I have found someone I really like. He’s nice, treats me well, makes me laugh. But there’s one problem... he’s a slob. I can’t help wondering if I would be able to live with him and put up with constantly picking up after him. I should add that my ex-husband was a Marine and a neatnik. Should I stay or should I go? — Pig Heaven Dear Heaven Note, the Answer Lady chose Heaven
Wise answers to perplexing questions
over Pig. Although the Answer Lady thinks it is premature to start thinking about moving in after just a couple dates, she does appreciate the concern. It is better to address these things before and reach a compromise, rather than let them fester until they become major deal breakers. Why not invite him for an outing at Cape May Brewing Co. It’s a cool place to lay it on the line and simply ask him, “This is important to me. What do you think we can do about it?” The Answer Lady is confident he will come up with a solution. Just make sure
he sticks with it. Dear Answer Lady I have been a widow for some years and decided to try online dating. Not so easy for someone in her 60s. On my first date the man took me to the Blue Pig for Sunday brunch and talked about himself the entire time. He never once asked me a question. Isn’t he curious about the person he is thinking about getting involved with? I left discouraged and depressed and I’m not so sure I want to keep doing this. — Lonesome Lady Dear Lonesome You cannot let one date discourage you. If you were buying a dress and the first one you picked off the rack didn’t fit, would you walk out of the store or try another dress on? Go on a couple more dates but also get involved in activities – Cape May Winery always has something going on. If birding interests you, there are a lot of their ilk flitting about. If you are interested in music, join a choir or attend some of the many musical events around town. Don’t despair, Lonesome. Love really IS all around.

Bird Droppings
V
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
alentine’s Day might be the unofficial start of the Cape May tourism season. But when it comes to love, the birds have us beat by weeks, in some cases months. Great-horned Owls are already incubating this year’s clutch of eggs. Adult Bald Eagles have been engaged in courtship displays for over a month and male House Finches have been singing up a storm in our yard. Their song is a hurried, rambling series of musical notes that translates, “Hey babe, you and me, how about it?” Judging by the number of House Finch in our area, this tired old pickup line appears to be working just fine. Northern Cardinals will be adding their voice to the morning chorus any day with their, “What?, what?, what? Cheer, cheer, cheer, cheer, cheer.” Suffering high nest failure, cardinals may have to initiate as many as eight nesting attempts to successfully get off one brood over the course of a 16-week breeding season. Good news for male suitors, bad news for the females who must construct a new nest
for each effort. Not much to cheer about. Meanwhile, just beyond the breakers, male and female Long-tailed Ducks are engaging in spirited tail chases. The yodeled clamor of courting birds can be heard from Cape May to Nova Scotia. Actually, by duck standards, Long-tailed Duck courtship is late. Many duck species court and pair up in the fall. American Oystercatcher, too, are deeply vested in the courtship process. As large as a football, these boldly patterned beach-nesting shorebirds brandish bright orange bills, which
opened wide emit a ringing series of whistled notes, as often as not directed at rival males as prospective mates. If you’ve been studying the birds coming to your feeders you’ve probably noted that male American Goldfinch are shedding their winter drab and donning their flashy yellowand-black courtin’ plumage. You may also have noticed that male cardinals have stopped chasing the female away from the feeder. And any day now, Laughing Gulls will be back in town, decked out in their black hoods and mouths open, celebrating the coming of spring with their iconic call. We humans have some silly courtship rituals, too. New hair, fancy cars, body hardware. But when it comes to showing off, few can vie with Red-winged Blackbirds. Males arrive ahead of females and stake out prime real estate, hitch themselves onto a conspicuous perch, unfurl their blood-red banners of love and vie for the ladies. For him it’s a fling, for her lies weeks of nest building, egg laying and brooding. It’s not a bad gig being a boy blackbird.

BLUE is an American staffordshire terrier mix who loves learning new tricks to earn treats. Although Blue tends to get a bit excited, he walks well on the leash and sits when asked to do so. QUINCY is a young shepherd terrier mix who loves attention and affection. His soft eyes beg for a walk or a romp in the yard.
