Mystery Photo Contest Know your way around America’s Original Seaside Resort? Every week, we shoot a picture of an island landmark. If you think you know the answer, email info@exitzero.us and write MYSTERY PHOTO in the subject line. Don’t forget to tell us your name and address. Entries must be received by the Monday after publication. If you don’t like emailing, don’t snail mail — it won’t get here in time. Instead, call 609-770-8479. The first name picked from the correct entries wins a 2017 Discount Deck. The answer and winner is posted on our Facebook page every Friday.

TERRY LEE JAEGER TITUSVILLE, NJ

How long have you been coming here? My husband and I have been staying in Cape May since 1984 — in the prekid days we would come down every few months. Now we spend a week every summer, and make a few day trips during the year. Who are you normally with? My husband and son. Favorite thing about Cape May? Everything is so simple and so beautiful that we feel like we’ve gone to another, better world! No car, no shoes, no fuss. It is truly the one place I can totally unplug. Least favorite thing? I guess I would say the crowds on the mall during weekend evenings! I do realize those crowds keep the town alive and vibrant, so I don’t want to complain too much! Favorite restaurants? We have favorites for every mood. Love George’s, Blue Pig and Red Store for breakfast (OMG...the butter buns are to die for!). We always find time for Louisa’s and Black Duck, but I think our new fave is Exit Zero Cookhouse. Awesomeness on a plate! Oh, and I can’t forget to mention Chill on the beach... holy shakes, Batman! Favorite places to stay? We have stayed at many B&Bs — all wonderful. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? My home address would be there.

NAUTI WORD OF THE WEEK

bump. kin

A beam or spar projecting outward from the hull of a vessel; An iron bar to which the lower and topsail brace blocks are sometimes hooked.

Mike DeMusz Painting Of The Week

BOOK OF THE WEEK We confer with Cape Atlantic Book Company to bring you a page turner... SEVENEVES by Neal Stephenson. Seveneves was included on President Obama’s 2016 summer reading list and is one of only five books recommended in 2016 as a “must read” by Bill Gates. Stephenson’s visions are epic and well-crafted science fiction. SEVENEVES covers 5000 years of humanity’s future, playing with science, genetics, sociology, life and death, whose central characters are mostly women — a welcome corrective to science fiction clichés.

Our Staff Artist Mike DeMusz is creating a painting every week. Here he is at work on the latest. To see the completed work, check out the Exit Zero Facebook page. Better still, visit the Exit Zero Store at 109 Sunset Boulevard, across from the gas station. Even if this particular work is already sold, we have the whole Mike DeMusz inventory of prints here, along with other great Cape May artwork. You can call the store at 609-770-8479. We are open every single day from 10-5 (9-9 in the summer). Or buy online at ezstore.us.

Ramblings From The Editor

T

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

wo American cities have been on my bucket list for at least 10 years… Charleston, SC and St Augustine, FL. Quite a few friends told me I would love both of these places, given my fondness for history, beautiful architecture… and great food. I’ve twice come close, very close, to visiting Charleston, but a combination of awful airport delays and other stuff I won’t go into prevented that from happening. So I was pretty excited to set off last week on a road trip with the wife that would take us to both of these places. We got on the ferry, enjoyed the singing DRBA cop, saw lots of people we knew on the ferry promotional videos, then hit the road and drove 12 hours to Savannah, GA, another place I had always wanted to experience, after reading Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. Not that we had much of a visit – we had time for a great meal in a candlelit, basement restaurant, slept for five hours, then set off in the morning for a family wedding in Tavares, a central Florida city that wants to be known as the sea plane capital of the world but which struck me as yet another

characterless place in the retirement state — take away the palm trees and the sunshine and it would be a pretty depressing place to visit (though it was pretty cool, I’ll admit, to see an alligator cruising in the lake). The next morning, we made it to St Augustine. As we inched through streets that were barely wide enough for one car, it felt like a compact version of Cape May Point with palm trees. Charming, we thought — this was going to be a cool spot. But after parking our car in a garage and heading for St George Street, aka

tourist central, it felt more like Disney. There’s a fine line between doing a good job of telling a city’s story — promoting the brand — and overdoing it to the point of being too cute. I think Cape Island could do a MUCH better job of telling its story, but I’m so glad it will not (I hope) ever get close to the St Augustine version of self-promoton. I was excited to see America’s oldest city, but, boy, was I over that after about five minutes, thanks to large, colorful (cheesy) signs proclaiming messages like America’s Oldest Wax Museum! While St Augustine shouted its message from the rooftops (look at me!), while wearing dayglo T-shirts and baseball caps, Cape May quietly hints at a fascinating history – but you have to do a bit of digging to get the details. Too much digging, if you ask me. There’s a happy medium in here. Our city has to figure out to better integrate the harbor district and promote the Victorian legacy in a way that attracts and inspires, without getting gaudy. As for Charleston... great architecture, great history, great restaurants. Bull’s-eye.

Dish Of The Week Originating on ranches and farmhouses in Mexico, huevos rancheros, which literally translates to rancher’s eggs in Spanish, has become one of the go-to breakfast choices for more adventurous early-morning eaters. The best place to enjoy huevos rancheros on the island? That would be The Red Store in charming little Cape May Point. Their irresistible concoction comprises house-smoked and pulled pork, Fernando’s Black Beans, housemade biscuit, cheddar, over easy egg, pickled jalapeños, tomato, guacamole and crema. It’s a breakfast with a little bit of kick and a heck of a lot of taste!

BEER OF THE WEEK

Now Open for LUNCH & DINNER 7 Days a Week Call now and make reservations for Easter Brunch and Dinner

WINE OF THE WEEK

Tower 23 Style: Soured Berliner Weisse ABV: 3.5% Cape May Brewing Company

Educated Guess 2014 Merlot $21.99 from Sunset Liquors, 106 Sunset Boulevard

This ale is simple and approachable, frequently sweetened with woodruff syrup but perfectly drinkable on its own. Like a cold and fizzy glass of lemonade, Tower 23 is tart and sour, marrying a lemony-citric sharpness with little hop bitterness

On the palate you get juicy plum and black cherry as well as streaks of cedar and black pepper. The tannins are soft and integrated while the finish hints at mocha and chocolate. Pairs well with Veal, duck, tuna, salmon, pastas, sausages and cheese.

Cocktail Of The Week Since it’s way past egg nog season and Cape May is lacking in restaurants and bars serving up cocktails made with whipped egg whites (not that we’re complaining — those drinks take a long time to mix), the next obvious choice was to choose a drink to consume WHILE eating eggs. So, after scrambling around a bit we found that the Mad Batter (one of the best places in town for brunch) puts a twist on the classic mimosa and, let’s just say, kicks it up a notch. Welcome to the ManMosa — orange vodka, Allagash white wheat beer, champagne and freshly squeezed orange juice served in a 23oz pilsner glass. It’s an egg-cellent way to start your day!

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

have no time for eggs, apart from Easter eggs and Faberge eggs, though I will not forget the year that my drunken yet faithful manservant, Kitchener, mixed up the two after a few too many swigs of cooking sherry, and we rolled my priceless collection of the latter, and tried to eat them. I had assumed he had excelled himself and made these stunning replicas from chocolate, gold foil, sugar crystals and sprinkles. I lost a tooth finding otherwise, and Young Albert managed to swallow his whole, leading to an urgent course of laxatives and an anxious poop-time walk in the garden. Of course, Cape May has always put on a rather stunning Easter egg rolling. We used to make an actual hill on the grass in front of Congress Hall, utilizing the labor of Irish and Scotch workmen. Then we would have the best confectioners in town make six-foot eggs of the finest chocolate, and we would seal inside them, a dozen “volunteers” taken from the city’s jails, who were first coated in the best melted candy. This ritual was of course adapted from the Biblical documen-

tary about the part where the mob is allowed to decide who to pardon. At least I think so: we based it on the musical Jesus Christ Superstar, which I suspect possibly deviated from the facts just a little. So, come midnight, we would take the eggs to the top of the special hill and roll them down at huge speed. The one that made it the farthest would be cracked open with a hammer and the occupant, if still alive (sometimes the egg would roll all the way down into the ocean and be consumed by sharks) and of sound mind, would be pardoned. The others

CAPE ISLAND BIKES

BIKE SALE

would be eaten by the ravenous and excited crowd, and any of their prisoners who were not disposed off in the melee were also pardoned: harsh but fair, that’s Cape May justice. These days it’s a far more sedate affair, sad to say, and we are discouraged from embedding convicts in confectionary, unless of course we go through a lengthy permit process and offer a silly legal guarantee that they will not be harmed. What a world we live in, where you’re not allowed to devise clever and amusing punishments for people who break the law. That’s not to say we don’t have fun: Kitchener now hard boils several hundreds eggs and we paint them gaily, and retire to the Widow’s Walk on the D’Catur Mansion at sundown, and set up the ballista, then after a few malt whiskies, fire them down onto the town, with a series of points award for the more imaginative and painful on-target shots. Once in a while, anyone who’s causing too much trouble in town happens to fall into the ballista and also get fired off into the ocean, of course. Very sad.

They produce a whole lot of eggs along with a great deal of other produce which supplies the Cape Resorts restaurants — Blue Pig Tavern, the Ebbitt Room and the Rusty Nail, plus Louisa’s and, this summer, Exit Zero Cookhouse. We asked Curtis for a bit of background on the farm. When and how did the idea of establishing a farm originate? Farming was always in the back of my mind. My maternal grandfather had a farm in Port Norris, which he used to grow food for the Christian Admiral hotel. My paternal grandfather was a weekend farmer who had 15 acres in what is now Cherry Hill. We lived in the Garden State and knew that many of Cape May’s historic hotels, including Congress Hall, had their own farms back in the 1850s. That was the inspiration behind creating a farm in our own backyard that could supply our restaurants. How did you discover what is now Beach Plum Farm? I saw it during a Sunday afternoon walk back from Les Rea’s beanery through the old Muchler farm (now Willow Creek). I came upon these vast fallow farm fields. It was love at first sight. What drew you to it? The vista over the marsh to the bay, along with the farming heritage. It seemed to want to be productive again. When and what was the first piece of farming that happened there? The first thing we planted was asparagus in the spring of 2008. The first thing we harvested was tomatoes, squash and cucumbers.

Page 46 Did you have a grand plan back then or has it developed organically? No, there wasn’t really a grand plan. It has evolved naturally. Tell us about that handsome farm stand. It was handbuilt by an Amish family in 2015 with mortise and tenon and peg joinery out of Pennsylvania hemlock. Sounds like the barn-raising scene in the movie Witness. Was it quite impressive to see it go up like that? Seriously impresive. It was like a giant erector set being assembled. It went up so fast. Seven brothers just put it together. The time lapse photography of it going up is amazing. Last year you began serving breakfast and lunch at Beach Plum Farm. And recently you started hosting pop-up dinners out there, and they seem to be superpopular, year-round. Tell us about them. We try to make each one a surprise and a delight. We take the freshest of our meat and produce and weave a menu around that. We pick a spot that fits the season and weather, then we set a long table and host a dozen or more folks for a familystyle dinner. They’re pretty special events and people love them. Approximately how many different

“Our food is farm-fresh and goes less than two miles to our restaurants. You can watch the fields get planted, the food get harvested, the truck get loaded and pull up at the Virginia or Congress Hall.” — CURTIS BASHAW, CAPE RESORTS kinds of fruit and vegetables are you producing? About 80. And what about livestock? We raise two kinds of pigs, turkeys and chickens for meat. You’ve got a passion for farming. With the rich history of this area, would you like to see some kind of return to intensive farming operations in this part of the county —and is it feasible? For sure, it’s feasible. The tripod of Cape May’s economy is farming, fishing and tourism. We need to keep each leg of the stool strong. I think that real farming is coming back to our region and it should be encouraged by us all. These days, so many restaurants are

using the farm-to-table description that it’s maybe being overused to the point of losing its meaning. How do your restaurants separate themselves from that? There is definitely a trend where everyone says they are farm to table. Our food is farm-fresh and goes less than two miles to all our restaurants. What separates us is that you can walk our farm and watch the fields get planted, the food get harvested, the truck get loaded and pull up at the Virginia or Congress Hall. This isn’t a slogan for us. It just is. So it’s your last meal on earth... what would it be? One of our chickens roasted with garlic and herbs and fresh potatoes and carrots in the pan, with our asparagus roasted or spinach steamed on the side. And blackberry cobbler for dessert. And finally, what’s the one thing you want to do in Cape May this summer? Read a real page-turning book in a beach cabana all day until the evening light makes it impossible to continue — and my phone would be left at home for the duration.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, celebrating Easter in Cape May

ring out a picture of Cape May from decades past and people are sure to comment on two things — the cars, or lack thereof, and the clothing. There’s a tendency to mourn the days when men wore suits everywhere and women didn’t leave the house without gloves, but some see an upside to going casual. Instead of being classless, our relaxed standards may reflect a desire to be a class-less, egalitarian America. There once was a clear dress code for every occasion. Victorian-era ladies of means might wear four outfits every day — a day dress for breakfast, a tweed suit for walking, a tea gown, and a dinner dress or evening frock. Men also had to change frequently if they wanted to do hunt, ride or play cricket. And they would certainly change for dinner. This lifestyle required servants to maintain the wardrobe, and those servants could rarely afford to do the fun things requiring a change of clothing. After World War I, clothing became less rigid with the introduction of “sportswear” — belted suits for men,

and sweater sets and skirts for women. The 1930s brought simpler designs, and the 1940s brought khaki — even Bermuda shorts — into civilian life. In the 1950s, teenagers started wearing blue jeans and, by the 1960s, unisex clothing had become commonplace, as both men and women began to wear jeans and tee shirts. Casual clothing remains the norm in America these days, but many people still choose to dress up for Easter. Cape May offers plenty of places to show off your dressy Easter clothing. Have Break-

fast with the Easter Bunny at the Cape May– Lewes Ferry terminal this Saturday, April 15 at 9am and 10:30am — $15 for children ages 3-12, $25 for adults and free for children. Reservations required. For tickets, call 800643-3779 (FERRY). Join the Kiwanis Easter Egg Hunt on Saturday, April 15 at 10am at Lafayette Street Park, meet the busy Easter Bunny, and search for the Golden Egg. Call 609-884-8888 or visit capemaykiwanis.com. On Easter Sunday, consider Elaine’s Buffet Brunch, with its outstanding Bloody Marys, from 9 to 1, $19.95 for adults, $9.95 for kids over three. Call 609-884-1199 or visitelainescapemay.com for more information. Or, try brunch in Congress Hall’s Grand Ballroom before you enjoy an Easter egg hunt, lawn games and a train ride. Reservations are required — visit caperesorts.com. Registration for the Easter Fashion Stroll on the Washington Street Mall begins at noon. Call 609-884-9565. Or visit Morey’s Piers Easter Celebration at noon in Wildwood, featuring stilt walkers, jugglers and face painting. For more information, call (609) 522-3900 or

The Movie Column

T

By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

hanks to everybody who came to the 2017 Cape May Film Festival this past Saturday. It was a wonderful event with directors, producers and a chance to mingle with filmmakers. We screened some of the most outstanding films of the past 10 years or so. If you missed it, please sign up for emails so you don’t miss another one. You can write to capemayfilm@hotmail.com —and instantly you will be one of those crazy cool people who is in the know! So now we are all set with our new spring time frame! See you in April 2018 for our next film festival. But we have so many other things going on year-round, and I want to focus on that in this column. One of the most recent examples about being out in the community comes from our president, Veronica, and her husband, Jerry. This dynamic duo recently screened and Abbott & Costello movie at a nursing home in Cape May Court House. He plans to go out like that all the time, showing films to people

When a classic comedy turned into a heartwarming moment. who are shut in, people who don’t get to the theater any more because they can’t even get out any more. Which shows the good hearts that these people have. Jerry reports that the residents of this particular home were a bit challenged... and the fast action of the movie they selected kept them engaged. One of the gentlemen at the event was diligently working on a project that he presented to Veronica after the movie. This man couldn’t speak, so he put his hand over his

heart and pointed to Veronica giving her the beautiful artwork he had been laboring over: I lovely depiction of a butterfly. “That one moment,” Jerry says, “exemplifies a small but critical part of the Cape May Film Society’s purpose.” Absolutely agreed! Dottie Knapp, our former president says, “We are so pleased that Veronica and Jerry made the longstanding concept of a ‘festival on wheels’ a reality. Denise Santagata, a society board member, adds, “We don’t realize sometimes what a little thing like showing a movie means to a senior. Good work!” So now my two cents. Veronica and Jerry, this is why we do what we do — and by “we” I don’t mean just the film festival, I mean us all as volunteers. We take the time to care when the vast majority simply look the other way or bypass the opportunity to serve. Well done, you two and to all the volunteers of the film festival who make the magic happen. It’s an honor to serve alongside you all! Love movies? Or just love to help? Email us to volunteer!

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I’ve been dating this girl for about a month and every time we go out, she expects me to pick up the tab. She never says, “Can I help with that?” She just sits there applying lipstick. I’m okay with that but she always picks someplace expensive. She never asks me where I’d like to go. I’m a young lawyer and I don’t make all that much money at this point. I’d like to continue seeing her but I don’t think I can afford it. Should I say something and take the chance of looking like a dork or move on? — Short Changed Dear Short Changed You can’t be serious — of course you should say something. Make her decide whether she likes you or she likes what you can buy for her. And don’t be embarrassed

Wise answers to perplexing questions

about bringing up the subject. She might be completely unaware of your financial circumstances. She is clearly lacking in manners. The Answer Lady suggests you take her to Aleathea’s which has a very generous bar menu as does the Wine Bar at the Washington Inn. You’ll have ambience and it won’t put a hurtin’ on your wallet. Then, bring up the money matter. No one wants to feel their generosity is being taken for granted. Dear Answer Lady Prom is coming up and there’s a girl I

want to ask, but I don’t know her that well. She’s in my English class and we often talk before class. I don’t think she has a boyfriend, or if she does, I don’t see him hanging around. We don’t move in the same circles so there’s no one I can ask. Still, I’m afraid to ask her. She might blow me off and what do I do then? Should I chance it or stay home and watch Netflix’s Thirteen Reasons? — Anxious in Cape May Dear Anxious The Answer Lady assumes this is a rhetorical question. Yes, take the chance. You don’t want your life to start out being a series of regrets, a la Thirteen Reasons. However, a little creativity might be called for. Save your money and go to Cape Winds florist. Buy a dozen roses and tell the florist to include a CD of prom songs of your choosing. Include a card that says, “Will you go the prom with me?” What girl could resist? BUT, if someone else has already asked her, don’t feel rejected. Feel good about taking action and taking a risk and apply that experience to the next lucky girl.

Bird Droppings

I

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

t’s April, which means any minute now the phone is going to ring and a homeowner is going to complain about the woodpecker drumming on their drainpipe. “Sorry,” I’ll explain, “but New Jersey Audubon studies birds; we don’t control them.” It’s breeding season and the bird is defining its territory. Some birds sing, some engage in aerial display, woodpeckers drum. While most woodpeckers drum on wood, some find that metal drainpipes give them more bang for the drum — a sound that signals to rival males the “biggest burliest woodpecker in the forest, here, don’t mess with me, bub.” And to attentive females, “Hey babe, you and me, how about it?” Invariably the next question out of the homeowner’s mouth is, “How long will this go on?” The answer “weeks” is not the answer they want since drumming begins shortly after dawn. “Aren’t you in need of a vacation?” I’ll suggest. “Two or five weeks at some tropical resort where they serve drinks with umbrellas.”

Of course, most resorts are ringed with trees. Where there’s trees there are bound to be woodpeckers, which are, for the most part, forest birds. In the US, there are 21 species; in Cape May, only six. Our smallest species, the downy woodpecker, is black and white. Males have a red patch on the nape. This species is common in suburban neighborhoods. The similar, but larger, hairy woodpecker favors mature woodlands. The red-bellied is also very common in Cape May and distinguished by buff-colored

underparts and more extensive red patch on the nape (females) or nape and crown (males). The extensive red on the head of redbellied prompts some to call the bird a redheaded woodpecker, a very scarce species with a bold black and white body and entirely red head. Still breeding in parts of the Pine Barrens this “endangered species” colonizes forest tracts that have been recently burned. Once found in Cape May County Park, the birds were dislodged by European starlings which usurp red-headed’s nesting cavity, sometimes killing resident adults in the process. Starling populations are doing fine and while they dominate bird feeders and can in numbers bankrupt a modest seed budget, at least they don’t drum on drainpipes. In spring, their courtship efforts are limited to a modest display complete with rattled notes, whistles and exaggerated bill snapping — nothing to draw the ire of homeowners, but successful enough to make this introduced species one of our most common residents and a bane to other cavity-nesting species.

RANGER is an large American Staffordshire terrier who is waiting at the shelter for his forever home. He can be nervous at first and hand shy.
