BARBARA ST. CLAIR CAPE MAY

How long have you been coming here? I moved here in 1973 from New England. I had never heard of this place but I pretty much loved it from day one and never left. Who are you normally with? Friends enjoying one of the great restaurants in town. Favorite thing about Cape May? What I really love is the history. Not just the Victorian era, but the earlier history – the Underground Railroad, the summer White House for several presidents, John Philip Sousa playing on the lawn of Congress Hall. It’s so much fun to walk the streets (or take the trolley or a carriage ride) in the summer and marvel at the architecture, lighting, porches and wonder what life was like in the late 1800s. Least favorite thing? That summer is too short! Favorite restaurants? The Mad Batter is by far my favorite, but I love the Merion Inn, Tisha’s, Washington Inn — and when I can round up a few friends who like curry, Exit Zero Cookhouse. Favorite places to stay? I live here, on the bayside just a couple blocks from the water. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? No changes…just ensure that Cape May’s status as a National Historic Landmark District is never jeopardized …and we need to continue to have beach replenishment.

NAUTI WORD OF THE WEEK

lub. bers. hole

A port cut into the bottom of the mizzentop allowing easy entry and exit. It was considered “un-seamanlike” to use this easier method rather than going over the side from the shrouds.

Mike DeMusz Painting Of The Week

BOOK OF THE WEEK We confer with Cape Atlantic Book Company to bring you a page turner... The Lost Order by Steve Berry. From the backrooms of the Smithsonian to the deepest woods in rural Arkansas, and finally up into the rugged mountains of northern New Mexico, The Lost Order is a perilous adventure into our country’s dark past and a potentially even darker future. The 12th Cotton Malone thriller makes great use of the author’s service on the Smithsonian’s Advisory Board giving us insight and history about this American institution.

Our Staff Artist Mike DeMusz is creating a painting every week. Here he is at work on the latest. To see the completed work, check out the Exit Zero Facebook page. Better still, visit the Exit Zero Store at 109 Sunset Boulevard, across from the gas station. Even if this particular work is already sold, we have the whole Mike DeMusz inventory of prints here, along with other great Cape May artwork. You can call the store at 609-770-8479. We are open every single day from 10-5 (9-9 in the summer). Or buy online at ezstore.us.

Ramblings From The Editor

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

S

eriously jazzed for this weekend? You should be. World-class musicians will be playing in America’s Original Seaside Resort from Friday through Sunday. Yep... it’s Exit Zero Jazz Festival, a twice-a-year musical spectacular that puts a lot of life, energy and dollars into this town. I like what the renowned Jazz Times magazine wrote about the event: “The seashore town becomes a veritable jazz village. I imagine that it must be like that in Sundance when Hollywood comes to their town for the annual film festival, albeit on a larger scale.” It’s also an event that, says Joe Carney of Carney’s, “single-handedly turned my business from a six-month to an eight-month business.” Among the highlights this weekend are a Ray Charles tribute by Maceo Parker, featuring the Ray Charles Orchestra. This is on Friday night at the Paul Schmidtchen Theater at Lower Cape May Regional. Who doesn’t want to hear soul classics like “What’d I Say”, “Busted” and “Hit the Road, Jack?” The next night, also at the Schmidtchen,

the Robert Glasper Experiment takes the stage. Glasper, who won a Grammy for Best R&B Album in 2012, effortlessly blends acoustic, jazz, hip-hop and contemporary R&B. If you’re not a hardcore lover of jazz, relax — this is a festival that offers all kinds of music. Buy a Hops Pass for $55 and you’ll be able to enjoy musicians play over the weekend at Cabanas, Carney’s and Iron Pier Craft House. You’ll love the energy of PhillyBloco (Cabanas on Saturday and Sunday) and the

Stooges Brass Band (Carney’s on Friday and Saturday), you shouldn’t miss the wonderful Daisy Castro (Iron Pier on Friday, Carney’s on Saturday and Sunday), and I’m hearing good things about Brianna Thomas (Carney’s on Friday and Saturday). You can pick up a copy of the jazz festival program at various venues throughout town, or check out exit0jazzfest.com. For more information on tickets, call Michael Kline at the jazz festival on 609-849-9202. By the way, if you are a member of the Cape May Chamber of Commerce, you’re invited to a cocktail reception to kick off the festival. It’s being held at Convention Hall this Friday from 5pm-6:30pm. If you’re not a chamber member, why not? Join up! Speaking of big names coming to town, was nice to see acclaimed movie director Ron Howard having such a good time in Cape May. He was raving on Twitter about The Harrison, where he spent a couple days — you can see an interview with The Harrison’s owners in our May/June color issue. See you at the jazz festival!

Dish Of The Week Big on the drinks and small on the food, the Jazz Age made finger foods popular, and the deviled egg was considered a get-together staple. For decades, it went out of fashion, but it’s roared back in recent years. With chef’s daily preparations and eggs from Beach Plum Farm, the Ebbitt Room at The Virginia hotel takes an old school hors d’oeuvre and applies a fresh, modern twist. So, this weekend, while sitting at the classy bar listening to the cool cats scat and bebop the night away, feast upon these small-but-irresistible treats, and then follow up with more farm-fresh goodies from the Ebbitt Room’s menu.

BEER OF THE WEEK Sophisticated Lady Style: Witbier ABV: 5.2% Cape May Brewing Company Citrusy, snappy and bright, this is a decidedly unique Spring beer. Funky Belgian yeast leads the way with a citrusy forefront, with lemon peel and coriander in the kettle to make it snap off your tongue with a tinge of acidity.

Now Open for LUNCH & DINNER 7 Days a Week

WINE OF THE WEEK Cryptic Calif Red Blend $11.99 from Colliers Liquors, 202 Jackson Street

“A tantalizing blend of Zinfandel, Petite Sirah, Cabernet, Merlot and Barbera. This wine delivers layer upon layer of spice and black fruit.” Regularly $18/bottle, currently on sale for just $11.99. Enjoy!

Cocktail Of The Week The Roaring Twenties were known as the decade that birthed the Jazz Age. It was, of course, also known for Flapper style and Prohibition, which is presumably why alcohol was so damn important in that supposedly dry decade. Did any other decade inspire more compelling cocktails than the 1920s? The Planter’s Punch was one of these and for this week we’re recommending a twist on the classic. The Iron Pier Craft House on Beach and Decatur (upstairs from Cabanas) offers the Oceanside Iron Spike — it comprises Sugar Island Coconut Rum, Cruzan Pineapple and Gosling’s Black Seal. It’s sweet and fruity but packs a punch. Try a little taste of Prohibition and enjoy the show!

The Old Fogey

T

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

he late Mrs D’Catur never much liked jazz. I recall once that it ended up all over her face, and she was not at all impressed. It’s the very devil to get it out of a lady’s hair, too, I must say: damnably sticky. Wait… what? Kitchener, my faithful manservant, is shushing me as I dictate this, and trying to catch me eye. Well what IS it, man! Spit it out! Oh, what? The subject this week is jazz? Oh, my mistake: they sound so similar! Ha! Well, I demand to write a column about JAM, too, one week, and will harangue yon husky Scotch editor until he agrees. I dare say, though, that I will have to call it “jelly” as the people here do… tsk…. but really, the story is a good one: a picnic and much laughter and then we were chased by a bull, of all things! Why, I slipped on the picnic blanket in my haste and a jam sandwich squirted all over Mrs D’s face, and into her open mouth! I laughed so hard I damn near choked to death. She was less amused, naturally.

Anyway. Jazz. Hate the stuff. Every time I think it’s time to get up and dance, it takes some unexpected twist and all the crowd are doing is snapping their fingers and muttering “nice…” The one exception to this is the wonderful Ella Fitzgerald, who used to come to Cape May and entrance us all. Actually, there are two exceptions, the other being the classic “Everybody wants to be a cat”, sung in that animated documentary movie, The Aristocats. I have had a fondness for ginger cats ever since seeing that, and at any

CAPE ISLAND BIKES

one time, we have a feline in the Mansion that goes by the name O’Malley. Don’t tell Young Albert that, though: he detests the animals and is insanely jealous. He is under the impression that O’Malley just showed up here one day and is barely tolerated, when in fact, once Albert is carried off to bed by Kitchener, O’Malley jumps on my knee and purrs like a fine V8 engine. I think Albert loves jazz, come to think of it: certainly I have seen him steal out of the mansion on Louis Armstrong night at Martini Beach, dressed in a black rollback and a tiny black beret, with sunglasses. That is not regular attire for a Yorkshire Terrier, and the tiny double bass was an extra clue. I don’t discourage him from this, as heaven knows he needs an outlet for his aggression, but really, until he plays something that O’Malley can dance to, jazz is forbidden in this house... unlike jams, though I tolerate only raspberry, with the occasional strawberry. I can see it now, all over poor Mrs D’s grouchy face.

The Exit Zero Interview Dave Clemans on jazz, art — and the ukulele

CASALE’S SHOE STORE

T

his week it’s the Jazz Issue... no surprise, given that the latest instalment of Exit Zero Jazz Festival is hitting town, with top-class tunes from masterful musicians filling our bars, restaurants and Convention Hall this coming weekend. To mark the event, we chatted with Dave Clemans, who, with his wife Chris, is one of the major sponsors of the festival, as well as being a jazz fanatic. Dave, when did the jazz bug first bite you? When I was 10, my father showed me some new records (he had just brought a new record player into the house) which he pronounced “artistically unparalleled” in all of jazz music. This was my introduction to the genius of Louis Armstrong. Among them was the 1928 Okeh recording of “West End Blues”, arguably the finest jazz piece ever recorded. I was just a boy, but that moment and the haunting perfection of that song has remained with me all my life. Four decades later Pops, as he liked to be called, knocked the Beatles from the top of the charts. You remained a fan of Armstrong through your youth? By my senior year in high school, I had collected every recording I could obtain from the local record store. Although as popular as he’d ever been, Armstrong no longer performed with the innovative fire and virtuosity of his youth, but I didn’t care — I loved every note. Other than jazz, was there any other kind of music you liked? I liked rhythm and blues from Lonnie Johnson, Elvis and Chuck Berry. And these days, what other music floats your boat? Blues and classical along with ragtime guitar by Blind Blake and Reverend Gary Davis. Virtuoso stuff! Who’s best... Beatles or the Stones? I don’t much care for either. What’s the best live performance you’ve ever seen or would

Page 46 LIKE to have seen? During my senior year in high school, I got a chance to see Louis Armstrong perform in Troy, New York. It was as though Pops was playing just for me, but I think he always put his heart and soul into every concert. I would have loved to have seen James P. Johnson, Fats Waller, Willie the Lion Smith and Art Tatum. One of your current favorites is Wynton Marsalis — can I say he’s a hero? And how thrilled were you to see him play in Cape May? Wynton is a most gifted player, but he is also a jazz historian, educator and humanitarian. You may rightly say that he is my hero — and all of Cape May should be honored that he played here. And what was it like for you and Chris to host him for dinner at your home last fall? A thrill by any measure. His quintet showed such courtesy and class, as do most people of real substance. It was sheer delight. They even knew who was playing the music in the background. I will never forget the magic of the night! How important is Exit Zero Jazz Festival to Cape May? It adds new dimension to the historic aspects, attracting new people, many of whom are young and filled with conviction. Do you play any musical instruments?

“Wynton Marsalis is a most gifted player, but he is also a jazz historian, educator and humanitarian. And all of Cape May should be honored that he played here.” — DAVE CLEMANS Yes, I’m an accomplished ukulele player. Don’t laugh — Jake Shimabukuro has elevated the ukulele to a concert instrument instead of a fun musical toy, playing classical music with infinite skill. What’s the one instrument you would love to master? Piano. You’ve been painting for nearly 50 years now. Compare your love of music to your love of art. I believe that all art is connected and that the seeds of creativity are the essential element in all art, be it painting, poetry, music or writing or cooking. You and your wife Chris came to Cape May in the 1980s. Did you plan to make a life here for sure or was it more of a let’s see where this takes us kind of deal? Cape May

has always been paradise to us and 40 years later we are too old to doubt the wisdom of that conviction — and nor do we wish to. What’s the best thing about living on this island? The beauty, the tolerance of different people and different ideas, plus the freedom of its anonymity. And the most frustrating thing? Parking. It will be improved only when a proper parking garage is erected and merchants refrain from hogging all the mall spaces. What would you change about Cape May if you had a magic wand? Bring in more young folks — with them come new ideas and vitality. Where is your favorite place to visit in the country or world? Italy is incomparable. The Amalfi coast, Capri, Naples harbor, Sorrento with its view of Vesuvius, the hills of Tuscany ripe with vineyards, hilltop cities like Volterra. And then there are the canals of Venice and the vitality of the art of Florence. And is there any particular thing you plan on doing in Cape May this summer? Yes, getting you to publish a new book I’m writing! interview by jack wright

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, taking a bite out of history

ith Hamilton still ruling Broadway, it’s tempting to romanticize America’s post-colonial period. Sure, Alexander Hamilton, the Schuyler sisters and their contemporaries felt lucky to be alive right then, but they had never tasted Cape May cuisine, so they didn’t know what they were missing. Early Americans enjoyed more abundant food than their European counterparts, but food was still simple and choices were limited. Preserved meat was salty and tough, and preserved vegetables pickled and soft. Other than salt, spices were rare. Fresh food was a seasonal luxury. Americans in the homespun era ate in some ways that are trendy now. They mostly ate what they grew, caught or traded with neighbors. They avoided gluten because wheat was expensive. They served home-brewed beer at almost every meal, and they ate a lot, because life was hard work. As a soldier, Hamilton’s daily rations would have been about 3,800 calories,

which is what the average modern American consumes. Unlike most of his contemporaries, Hamilton preferred coffee to tea, and he reportedly drank ventis worth of it as he stayed up writing. In the morning, he might have eaten a light meal of stale bread and warm milk. His main meal might have been a multi-course affair at midday, with greens in summer and beans or corn in winter, a separate fish course, a couple of kinds of meat, a savory pie and dessert. The politically astute Hamilton might serve cherry pie in honor of George Washington, but he preferred the vanilla ice cream served by Jefferson. He and his companions

would linger around the table, and the evening meal would have been insignificant, or even optional. At the Feasting on History Gala, Tuesday, May 2nd at 6pm at Naval Air Station Wildwood, you can celebrate Hamilton’s era without eating like him. This popular event, now in its 17th year, lets you sample the best in Down Jersey cuisine from 40 local restaurants, wineries and breweries. Hamilton likely never had the chance to try coconut soup or bahn mi, but you can find these exotic specialties right next to classic seafood favorites like lobster roll or clam chowder. Sample new summer wines and beers, and finish up with delicate pastries, cupcakes and concoctions like orange lavender creme brulee. Tickets are $85 per person or $800 for a table of ten. It’s a great chance to meet other history lovers. Proceeds benefit Historic Cold Spring Village, New Jersey’s largest living history museum, located about three miles north of Cape May. For more information, call 609898-2300, extension 10.

The Movie Column

W

hen a message resonates, it becomes timeless. At least this is what I found from the two films that I’m reviewing this week. I Am Not Your Negro is a bold, new documentary entirely written by James Baldwin. The novelist and playwright died in 1987, yet the message in this movie rings true 30 years later. Every word of it is his. Some of those words are narrated by Samuel L. Jackson, but most are contained in archival footage with Baldwin speaking himself. Baldwin recounts the life and murders of Medgar Evers, Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. The story goes beyond historical record to reveal racial conflict relevant to the times then and our times now. Many times, Haitian director Raoul Peck splices current imagery with the classic words coming from Baldwin. The author was eloquent if not alarming in assessing the reaction of his race by those in power. This film is an awakening even to those who feel they successfully navigate race matters with sensitivity and kindness.

By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

The Zookeeper’s Wife In the end, Peck forces us to look into the eyes of people who could very easily be judged on their looks alone. And those eyes look back at you, and you can’t help but be moved. The Zookeeper’s Wife is set in Warsaw, Poland. The year is 1939 and Germany is on the brink of attacking the city and taking the country. Jan (Johan Heldenbergh) operates the zoo with his wife, Antonina (Jessica Chastain). The opening scenes depict a beautiful zoo — calm and filled with exotic animals and good energy, mostly from the positive and

always smiling Antonina. When the air strikes come, the scene turns ugly. The stark contrast between the mighty animals and their cowering from bombs falling from the sky is unforgettable. Under German occupation, the city plunges into the dark days of World War II. The couple convinces fellow zoologist turned Nazi commander, Lutz Heck (Daniel Bruhl), to allow them to keep the zoo open to raise pigs. Heck agrees in part because of his attraction to Antonina. The couple then decides to begin a safe house in the basement at the zoo for those being persecuted. There are children, families, couples. The fear and anxiety inside the zoo is as palatable as the anger and hatred from the army outside. Who is really caged? Clashes between the two are inevitable as we fear for the hidden. This film and its novel were based on a true story. When stories resonate, they transcend time. It’s like the difference between weather and climate. And in today’s climate, these two films capture emotion from another era that we are living today.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I am 20 years old and lived in Cape May my whole life. I want to try living on my own in another state — like North Carolina. I’ve been thinking about this since I graduated from high school. College wasn’t for me and I don’t know what I want to do with my life so I think a new environment would be helpful. The problem is I just met a boy that I like and who likes me and he isn’t taking my departure well. But I feel this is something I have to do. Should I invite him to come with me? — Circling the Runway Dear Circling The point of spreading your wings is to gain independence, and in so doing, learn to sort out everyday problems on your own, without a net. Taking the new beau is going

Wise answers to perplexing questions

to undermine that experience, especially since you would be inviting him out of guilt. That said, you do have feelings for him, so invite him to Harry’s for dinner at a table with a view and explain that getting off the island for a while is something you need to do. It doesn’t mean the two of you do not have a future. It does mean you need to be a little more creative about spending time with each other. The rest will sort itself out. Dear Answer Lady I looked out my kitchen window this

morning and saw my neighbor with a chainsaw in his hand and said to myself, “Here we go again.” Every time he takes on a “project,” my property value goes down. The last time he got “inspired” he decided it would be cool to hang wind chimes from all the branches of the tree which borders our property line. My husband and I didn’t sleep for a month. Blissfully, a nor’easter came up the coast and wiped out the chimes. They went airborne all over the neighborhood. The time before he decided to display a mounted mako shark on the side of the house. Is there anything we can do to discourage his “creativity?” — Devalued Dear Devalued There is nothing you can do. Naturally, if his projects disturb your piece of mind you need to politely make him aware, but really you have no control over someone else’s definition of taste. The Answer Lady suggests you put a stockade fence up. Then call Lundholm Landscapers and make your backyard a garden of Eden which not even the Clark Griswold neighbor can affect.

Bird Droppings

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

ummingbirds are due. These denizens of open woodlands and forest edge are fairly common in Cape May. Fresh from their energy-sapping flight from the tropics, these magical iridescent little birds arrive with their fuel gauges on empty. Remembering where your hummingbird feeder was last year, imagine their chagrin if you have not yet cleaned, refilled and repositioned yours. It takes more than sugar water to keep hummingbirds fed and healthy. Young hummingbirds need protein and before nectarbearing flowers are blooming, adults spend a lot of time snapping up insects. If you are fortunate, you may attract a breeding pair. Our ruby-throated hummingbird makes pendulum-like swings over the perched female so the sun will illuminate the male’s iridescent red throat. Overtures made and accepted, the female selects a site and begins construction of a golf ball-sized nest, most typically at the end of a downturned branch with an open area below but sunshielding canopy above.

The young may be expected to take advantage of your sugar water repository as soon as they fledge. By July your feeders will be humming with this year’s crop of young. How long should you leave your feeders up? At least until November. Here’s the catch. If you elect to put up hummingbird feeders you elect to maintain them properly. In warm weather. Sugar water should be changed and feeders cleaned every other day. Sugar water ferments and it doesn’t take much hooch to get

a bird that weighs less than the weight of a penny blitzed. The type of feeder you buy determines how difficult or easy the cleaning process will be. We mix up a batch of hummingbird juice in a quart-sized container and refrigerate to use as needed. The accepted ratio is four parts water to one part white sugar — so, one cup sugar per quart of water. Boil the water to kill bacteria, add sugar, stir and allow to cool. Do not use honey and do not add red dye. Your hummingbird feeder should be red enough to attract the birds. Avoid feeders with yellow flowers, they attract bees and wasps. The Hum-zinger feeder designed by hummingbird authority Sherri Williamson is easy to clean and comes with an ant defeating well that surrounds the metal hanger. Planting tubular red flowers in your yard will make it irresistible to hummingbirds. And flowers are self cleaning and they know precisely how much sugar to mix with their nectar. Enjoy the show.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

DEZZY is an American Staffordshire mix who was surrendered into the shelter because his family was moving and could not take him with them. He is a sweet, social, medium sized boy who is young, just one year old! In his previous home Dezzy lived with children under the age of 10. So if you’re looking for the perfect pup, adopt today!

JOEY is a two and half year old beagle pit mix who was surrendered into the shelter and now looking for his forever home. For that home to be perfect for Joey, it would be best if it was an adult home only. Joey is okay with other dogs and loves to play with tennis balls. He is a social boy just looking for the right home. Come adopt this playful pup today!

CHIEF is a shepherd mix who came to the shelter a bit nervous. He is starting to slowly warm up to his new environment, but would much rather be in a loving home like he once had. Chief has lived with young children as well as other dogs. Playing fetch with his friends is Chief’s favorite thing to do. Stop by the shelter and let him impress you!
