ROY PERSSON HACKETTSTOWN, NJ
How long have you been coming here? While visiting Wildwood in 1972, I discovered the charm, beauty and serenity of this great little town. Since then, I’ve come back every year. Who are you normally with? My wife Carmelina and children. Favorite thing about Cape May? The warm feeling of a simpler time and a slower pace of daily life. Least favorite thing? Losing Morrow’s Nut House on the promenade. It was a special place where one felt good by just walking in the door. Favorite restaurants? Black Duck, Godmother’s, Union Park, Washington Street Inn, Lucky Bones, Exit Zero Cookhouse. Favorite places to stay? A rental house on Sunset Boulevard across from the bird sanctuary and the Dormer House Bed and Breakfast. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? I like the old-time feel of Cape May. So, I want a gas station in town that when I pull in, an attendant dressed in a white uniform, complete with cap and bow tie, greets me, makes a comment on the weather, fills my tank, cleans my windshield and thanks me for stopping in. I’d gladly pay more for the gas, and, I’d tell all my friends about this cool gas station in Cape May.
NAUTI WORD OF THE WEEK
holy. stone
A chunk of sandstone used to scrub the decks. The name comes from both the kneeling position sailors adopt to scrub the deck (reminiscent of genuflection for prayer).
Mike DeMusz Painting Of The Week
BOOK OF THE WEEK We confer with Cape Atlantic Book Company to bring you a page turner... Ten Restaurants that Changed America by Paul Freedman. One of the BEST histories of America. Not just a foodie history, but a look at America during the lives of these establishments. Why were they popular, what was happening at the time, what happened to alter the course of their success, where are we now? Freedman discusses immigration, race relations, gender, family…and food.
Our Staff Artist Mike DeMusz is creating a painting every week. Here he is at work on the latest. To see the completed work, check out the Exit Zero Facebook page. Better still, visit the Exit Zero Store at 109 Sunset Boulevard, across from the gas station. Even if this particular work is already sold, we have the whole Mike DeMusz inventory of prints here, along with other great Cape May artwork. You can call the store at 609-770-8479. We are open every single day from 10-5 (9-9 in the summer). Or buy online at ezstore.us.

Ramblings From The Editor
A
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, I would expend a great quantity of ink on criticizing the actions of Cape May’s city council. I would call their actions malicious, mischievous, thoughtless, spiteful, among other adjectives. Okay, it wasn’t a long time ago but it does seem like it since what we have in place these days appears to be an administration that conducts its actions with complete transparency and... shock! horror!... listens to its taxpayers and the business community. It’s a radical way of thinking, but I like it a lot. I’m convinced my over-active blood pressure is probably doing better now that Chuck Lear is presiding over the city’s administration. Previously, under the strong arm of Ed Mahaney, along with his cohorts Bruce MacLeod and Tony Monzo (aka The 3Ms), barely a month seemed to go by without some deeply frustrating controversy that more often than not would embroil the city in legal tangles. And none of it ever felt necessary — in short, Mayor Mahaney brought Game of Thrones to
this otherwise peaceful little resort. Blood was spilled. It was ugly. And although it made for some interesting reading in this column, I took no pleasure from exposing the ugly innards of Cape May’s municipal business dealings. Honestly, it stressed me out. Look at the recent actions of the current administration and you’ll see how refreshingly different life is at City Hall now. For instance, the issue of outdoor restaurant seating is a thorny one and would likely have turned into a full-blown cluster in Cape May’s previous life.
When, earlier this year, the city recommended charging fees of $300 per seat to restaurants who wanted to utilize outdoor seating, there was pushback from some eateries for whom that was too much money. As a restaurant owner myself, I thought it was too high. There was also criticism that the city was going to use the money for a parking fund so that, one day, we can alleviate our parking problems. But why should only restaurants be bearing that burden? What happened? The city went away, thought about it and came up with a new plan — add $25 to every mercantile license so that all businesses would be contributing to the parking fund. As for outdoor seating, that would be treated separately with restaurants paying fair rates, based on their individual situations. It’s wise, it’s fair. It CAN be done. We’ve gone from Game of Thrones to... I dunno... Gilmore Girls? And while I would much rather WATCH what happens in the mythical land of Westeros, I would much rather LIVE in the mythical town of Stars Hollow.

Dish Of The Week To mark National Babe Ruth Day today (April 27), we’re featuring the Bambino’s favorite food (other than hot dogs) — a great steak. He liked his meat pretty much uncooked and would often eat two at a time — on one occasion, he reportedly downed four at one meal. He also ate 18-egg omelets — so we might not want to follow the diet plan of baseball’s greatest player. But we will feature a steak in his honor. Oyster Bay is one of the best places to go for prime meats. Try their New York Strip Steak, center-cut, aged, flamed with brandy, served with peppercorn sauce and topped with herbed boursin cheese. Chef Chris and his gang will hit it out of the ballpark.
BEER OF THE WEEK
Now Open for LUNCH & DINNER 7 Days a Week
WINE OF THE WEEK
Summer Catch Style: Belgian Wheat ABV: 5.5% Cape May Brewing Company
Nick Goldschmidt Fidelity Red Blend $16.99 from Sunset Liquors 106 Sunset Boulevard
Citrusy and refreshing, this crushable ale is sure to be your go-to drink all summer long. Citrus on the nose with an easy-drinking yet firm body, Summer Catch is our summer seasonal aimed at the adventurous craft beer drinkers.
Red fruit aromas of cherry, strawberry, and jam, with touches of vanilla; black cherry and black raspberry flavors; nicely balanced, medium weight on the palate with soft, supple tannins in the finish. Pair with ribs, bbq, steak, pasta, figs and tuna.
Cocktail Of The Week Babe Ruth was known for his drinking. And while he wasn’t always super-picky about what he downed, it’s been said that he was very keen on slugging (get it?) highballs. Apparently, one night a White Sox-supporting bartender thought he’d do his team a favor by serving the Bambino too many drinks — the next day, the Yankees’ No. 3 hit a couple home runs. So what’s in a highball? Pretty simple — your whisky (or whiskey) of choice plus ginger ale, garnished with lemon peel. Where to drink it? We’re going to suggest Cabanas, where you can belly up to the bar and have your fill of the Babe’s favorite drink while watching the Phillies do battle at Dodger Stadium this weekend.

We went in search of some Babe Ruth-appropriate products and found the answer from Cape May Sports Memorabilia located in Antiques Emporia. The Items: Authentic signed baseball bats. The Appeal: It’s the Sultan of Swat’s greatest weapon and given that April 27 is National Babe Ruth Day and baseball season is underway, treat yourself to an authentic bat signd by some of the leagues greatest players. The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
I
t was the shot that was not heard all over the world, but the ball did travel the globe. I confess I wasn’t even expecting to hit it, I was merely grandstanding to keep the World(ish) Series crowd in the Cape May stadium entertained. We were battling Wildwood, always a grudge match. The stadium was at full capacity, 100,000 screaming souls packing it to the rafters, and when I struck the ball, delivering the game and series to the city, the noise was such that the entire peninsula vibrated so hard that it shifted a few yards, causing the canal to open up. And that is how Cape May came to be an island. But back to me, as my Scotch granny would say, acidly, whenever the conversation took a turning to rob her of the starring role. There I was, resplendent in my handmade baseball colors, looking every inch the sports star. My buttocks were the talk of the state, in those days, like two bowling balls in a fine cotton sack. And do not start me on the view of the other side: the D’Catur Family Jewels were famous, and sometimes infamous, and my tailor had not hidden their glory.
My bat was a marvel, and came into my possession after a wager with the great Babe Ruth himself, made one night in the Brown Room, when a full bottle of single Malt Bawheid 40-year-old had been consumed (it is a rare vintage, appearing in few whisky encyclopedias. The others from the same distillery were, respectively, Yaradge, Yatoley and the prized Areyoulookinatmeyabam). Anyway, Ruth had claimed he could run to The Point faster than a galloping horse, not knowing that if there’s one thing Cape May was famous for in those days, it was our

galloping horses. They also talked, but more of that another day. Anyways, we drunkenly fetched Ole Misery from the stables. Ole Misery was a mean un and a sly trickster and we usually only gave him to unwelcome visitors, to test their mettle. And by test I mean find wanting and then laugh at them. But I had his measure, and he would, if given a Werther’s Original mint, roll over and beg. Very eloquently. Anyways, Babe managed about 100 yards before me and Ole Misery ran him down, and then accidentally ran him over. It was while we were taking the trampled baseball star to hospital that I managed to borrow his bat: it seemed ungentlemanly to remind him of the wager when he was in such a mess, and I knew he wouldn’t mind. As it happened, various telegrams and letters later suggested he minded a lot, but really, I took that to be sour grapes. And so, the bat must have had some magic, for the ball went all the way into orbit, and circles the globe to this day: look up at 11.59 on a starry night and you will see it.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the US Coast Guard Community Festival
he United States Coast Guard TRACEN — Coast Guard-speak for Training Center — is a vital part of the Cape May community. From the early morning strains of military music on their loudspeaker, to the sharp looking, uniformed people who hold the door for you at Wawa, to the beaming family groups who check in for graduations, the Coast Guard enhances Cape May, and that’s before you consider the valuable services they provide, the $175 million they add to the county economy, or the thousand people they employ. Coast Guard people coach our kids, shop in our stores, and share our beaches. They join us around our holiday tables and pitch in at charitable events. In return, Cape May offers a sort of home base for Coast Guardsmen. Since 1982, all recruits pass through Cape May on their way to a Coast Guard career. Few among us are willing to take on the challenge of being a Coast Guardsman. You have to learn to move as a “blue blur,”
ready at a moment’s notice for the physical and mental challenges the job demands. The public face of recruit training is tough enough — we see the lines of grey shirts and blue shorts jogging by on hot summer days, or doing squats and flutter kicks on cold winter beaches. Behind the scenes, it’s even tougher, with eight weeks of lugging wet, sandy ropes, being tossed into the sea, and learning to operate complex systems all while riding a psychological roller coaster. The training is “just eight weeks,” but, as Coastie families say, “It’s not just eight weeks.” Recruits are expected to come ready, so
they have been training before the bus pulls up. Sometimes recruits make a mistake, so there’s a remedial week. And those weeks are a sort of baptism to a life as a Fireman Apprentice or Seaman Apprentice. Few would care to repeat those eight weeks, but all are proud that they did it. The Cape May County Coast Guard Community Festival is a “celebration of the county’s relationship with the U.S. Coast Guard.” The festivities begin with a private party — the USCG Ball on Friday evening. On Saturday, May 6, TRACEN invites the public to join an on-base celebration from 10am to 5pm. Festivities include ship and harbor tours, drill team performances, K-9 unit demonstrations, trolley tours of the base, vendors, exhibits, live music, food, kids’ activities like face painting, and a photo booth. Adults are required to show photo identification, and all bags are subject to search. You can park along Pennsylvania Avenue — look for the parking attendants — and have the trolley carry you to the main gate, or take your bike.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady Mother’s Day is coming up and I have no idea what to buy. She hates everything or says, “It’s a waste of money.” What would you suggest for the woman who has everything and if she doesn’t have it, doesn’t want it? On the other hand, I should add that my baby brother could bring her a box of Ritz Crackers and she’d swoon. He actually did that one year. — Trying Hard to Please Dear Trying You can never compete with a baby brother. They seem to hold a special spot with moms. Not fair, but that seems to be the reality, at least in your case. So, run with it. The Answer Lady suggests you invite the whole clan over for a champagne brunch. Get the champagne at Sunset Liquors. Be prepared to
Wise answers to perplexing questions
serve it straight or as a mimosa. Pop into the Lobster House and get a tray of jumbo shrimp either already prepared or steam them yourself. Go to Gaiss’ for their homemade sausages and cheese-stuffed brats. Stop at Beach Plum Farm for fresh eggs for omelets and some greens for a nice salad. Even if mom isn’t happy, everyone else will be. Dear Answer Lady My daughter and her family (hubby, three children from two to six) are coming to visit next weekend. They are not going to
be satisfied with hanging around the house. I do have a Monopoly bame in case it rains, but if it is not raining what do we do? It is still too cold for the beach, unless I get incredibly lucky. Nothing is really open. My question is — how do I entertain these high-energy kids? — Panicked Nana Dear Nana No worries. Take them to Cape May County Park Zoo. We are incredibly lucky to have such a resource in our county. The Answer Lady also suggests a visit to Cape May Bird Observatory and Lake Lily. They are always ready and willing to educate young birder wannabes (whether they know they are wannabes or not). The Nature Center of Cape May has something going on. Also, the 99-step climb to the top of the lighthouse is a show stopper. You can stay at the bottom with the two-year-old. Don’t discount a walk on the beach, timed to coincide with sunset. Finish the day off with the arcade. How can you beat a family skee ball challenge, followed by ice cream on the promenade? The Answer Lady is tired just thinking about it.

The Movie Column
I
By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
t might be early to do a summer movie preview, then again summers do fly by -— especially in Cape May. This summer will have its fair share of reboots, sequels, and superheroes. What would summer be without superheroes? Spider-Man is back. It seems since he was introduced in the 2002, he has never left the big screen. This is the third reboot of the teenage superhero story. Michael Keaton plays a villain called Vulture, while newcomer Tom Holland is the hero. So let me skip right over the part where I talk about how superhero movies are beneath me now, and say that I probably will watch his movie. It might have something to do with the fact that Marisa Tomei plays the aunt of the superhero’s alter ego. Wonder Woman will hit theaters this summer as part of the DC (Batman/Superman) universe. Comic book fans know the story of this hero — and she was part of mainstream culture in the 1970s with a popular television show. She is part of a larger franchise similar to the Avengers team called Justice
Spider-Man is back... again League. The first film in the series last year, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, did not do well critically, although obviously did make enough money to continue investments in the program. Time will tell if this installment will have more success. Now for the sequels, reboots and regurgitation (let’s face it there’s not much more you can call a movie based on the campy 1990s television show Baywatch except just that). Planet of the Apes is back with the third installment centered on a war. Aren’t all
these movies something about war? Cars 3 will be released, making this animation that originally appeared more than 10 years ago a trilogy. Guardians of the Galaxy, Volume Two will come out early on in the season. It is a popular, more sci-fi based superhero flick. Aliens, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Despicable Me, Pirates and even Al Gore’s Inconvenient Truth all have sequels in theaters. Captain Underpants will be new for the kids. The Mummy and the story of King Arthur get a fresh reimagining. Some films I have my eye on include Atomic Blonde, an undercover agent investigates a missing colleague in Cold War Berlin; Lowrider, about a street artist is looking for himself in his multi-subcultural life; and Wind River, the story of murder on a Native American reservation. So it looks like it will be an interesting time at theaters this summer! Remember if you see anything at the movies, email a few comments to capemayfilm@hotmail.com, and we will likely include your comments in this column.

Bird Droppings
W
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
e must have had at least 20 osprey on our Monday bird walk at South Cape May Meadows. Most were heading out to Delaware Bay to fish or returning with fresh bunker in tow. I was brought to recall ornithologist Alexander Wilson’s observation concerning local fishermen and the osprey’s return in the spring. Said the Father of American Ornithology, the local fishermen “welcome the Fish Hawks’” return because it signals the spring influx of fish in Delaware Bay. Seems there are plenty of bait fish in the bay this year, an assessment underscored by the hundreds of northern gannet that are likewise drawn to the bounty of fish — we saw more than 200 in a half hour. This morning in the skies over Mauricetown, courting osprey were making the air ring with the strident piping of their calls. Swooping, then hovering on frenzied wings, I was brought to recall another of Alexander Wilson’s observations regarding the Fish Hawk. He called them “vigorous
winged.” An apt description since this powerful bird makes light of using its own power to cover distance over land or water. Forty years ago, the osprey, victimized by DDT poisoning, was declared an endangered species. But the banning of the insecticide, coupled with active management and good reproductive success, has led to numbers that may well be as high as those noted by Wilson when he visited the Cape in the early 1800s. Strolling through the South Cape May Meadows, he discovered a species
of plover that was new to science — Wilson’s Plover. While it no longer breeds in New Jersey I have been privileged to record one in South Cape May. The plover might be locally extirpated, but many other species known to Wilson are present today. On April 10, there were 51 species to engage the 15 or so walk participants and eight leaders. Not included in the total was the merlin that sped through the parking lot before the 7:30 start time. This small dark, bird-catching falcon is a migrant and winter resident but may soon breed in New Jersey as the birds breeding range expands. To learn about recent sightings and bird walk opportunities go to birdcapemay. org. To learn more about North America’s second-most popular outdoor activity, consider attending the two-hour Break into Birding class conducted by this writer every Wednesday at Cape May Bird Observatory’s Center for Research at 600 Route 47 North, Goshen. You bring the enthusiasm, we do the rest. New birders of all ages cordially welcome. Osprey are guaranteed.

DEZZY is an American Staffordshire mix who was surrendered into the shelter because his family was moving and could not take him with them. He is a sweet, social, medium sized boy who is young, just one year old! In his previous home Dezzy lived with children under the age of 10. So if you’re looking for the perfect pup, adopt today!
JOEY is a two and half year old beagle pit mix who was surrendered into the shelter and now looking for his forever home. For that home to be perfect for Joey, it would be best if it was an adult home only. Joey is okay with other dogs and loves to play with tennis balls. He is a social boy just looking for the right home. Come adopt this playful pup today!
CHIEF is a shepherd mix who came to the shelter a bit nervous. He is starting to slowly warm up to his new environment, but would much rather be in a loving home like he once had. Chief has lived with young children as well as other dogs. Playing fetch with his friends is Chief’s favorite thing to do. Stop by the shelter and let him impress you!
