Mystery Photo Contest Know your way around America’s Original Seaside Resort? Every week, we shoot a picture of an island landmark. If you think you know the answer, email info@exitzero.us and write MYSTERY PHOTO in the subject line. Don’t forget to tell us your name and address. Entries must be received by the Monday after publication. If you don’t like emailing, don’t snail mail — it won’t get here in time. Instead, call 609-770-8479. The first name picked from the correct entries wins a 2017 Discount Deck. The answer and winner is posted on our Facebook page every Friday.
ROBERTA AUNGST CAPE MAY, NJ
How long have you been coming here? In the late 80s and kept coming back every year. First learned about Cape May via a class on Victorian architecture. Who are you normally with? With my family when we first started coming. Now here with my husband full time. Favorite thing about Cape May? The architecture, living at the beach and the music and theatre scene. Least favorite thing? The parking. Oh wait, I now live here and can park at my house, but parking in town is always an issue. I know I could walk, but I am lazy. Favorite restaurants? Our regular favorite is the Merion Inn. I also love the Washington Inn. Nothing beats the Lobster House for fresh seafood. Other favorites include the Blue Pig Tavern, the Ebbitt Room, Fins, the Rusty Nail and the Pier House. Favorite places to stay? Back in the day we stayed at the Chalfonte, now we have our house in Village Green. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? The demise of the bed and breakfast industry is bothersome. House rentals seem the way to go these days. The critical thing is to preserve our historical city status. We also had concerns about the crazy nonsense coming from City Hall over the last few years; hopefully the new administration will change all that.
NAUTI WORD OF THE WEEK
Jack
Either a flag, or a sailor. Typically the flag was talked about as if it were a member of the crew. Strictly speaking, a flag is only a “jack” if it is worn at the jackstaff at the bow of a ship.
Mike DeMusz Painting Of The Week
BOOK OF THE WEEK We confer with Cape Atlantic Book Company to bring you a page turner... THE CASUAL VACANCY by J.K. Rowling. Rich at war with poor, wives with their husbands and teachers with their pupils… Pagford is not what it first seems. And the empty seat on the parish council becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen. Who’ll triumph in an election fraught with passion, duplicity and unexpected revelations? J. K. Rowling’s first post– Harry Potter work is a fantastic revelation of small-town minds playing politics, as if this were solely limited to fiction!
Our Staff Artist Mike DeMusz is creating a painting every week. Here he is at work on the latest. To see the completed work, check out the Exit Zero Facebook page. Better still, visit the Exit Zero Store at 109 Sunset Boulevard, across from the gas station. Even if this particular work is already sold, we have the whole Mike DeMusz inventory of prints here, along with other great Cape May artwork. You can call the store at 609-770-8479. We are open every single day from 10-5 (9-9 in the summer). Or buy online at ezstore.us.

Ramblings From The Editor
I
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
spend a lot of time cheerleading for Cape May — it’s Exit Zero’s mission. Why? To encourage people to visit and spend money that will ensure this city maintains a robust, high-quality business community. This not only makes Cape May a terrific place to visit — it also means it’s a terrific place to live year-round. And, of course, tourist dollars keep down the taxes for the residents as well as allowing cultural organizations to survive and flourish. Why am I mentioning this? Because I just spent a few days in the Hamptons — where New Yorkers go to play — and I hope that Cape May doesn’t evolve into a New Jersey version of this summer playground. Don’t get me wrong. It’s a beautiful place. We were based in Sag Harbor, where Cape Resorts group (owners of Congress Hall, the Virginia and Beach Shack) operate a charming hotel called Baron’s Cove, situated on the harbor of this former whaling village. Sag Harbor is worth a visit — it has echoes of Cape May, though its business district is way smaller. But it does have an impressive whaling museum —
our area’s little-known whaling history needs to be told to a much larger audience. It’s Montauk, at the eastern edge of Long Island, that provides the cautionary tale. Montauk was, for decades, a sleepy little fishing village. No fancy restaurants, no exorbitant house rentals or celebrity mansions. The more obnoxious New Yorkers went nowhere near it. Then, about a decade ago, Montauk got hip. Expensive restaurants opened, mom-npop motels were sold and replaced by superexpensive boutique hotels. And the poor locals
mother’s day brunch
began complaining that their quiet streets were being taken over by party animals who were destroying the village’s peaceful vibe. I don’t think Cape May will ever attract that crowd, but every time I get excited about a major celebrity sighting here, I also wonder if the slow drip of people heading here because they’re done with the Hamptons may turn into a fairly steady stream. Don’t get me wrong — I love it when I see young couples from Brooklyn hanging out in our town. A regular supply of fresh tourist blood is essential and welcome. But I like that our shopping district isn’t a little cousin of LA’s Rodeo Drive (like East Hampton’s is). Yes, we have some great new boutiques, but we also retain those little stores that give off the whiff of an authentic little seaside town. Long may it last. Like many, I was shocked by the untimely death last week of Chip Kaithern, whose wife Pam is the mayor of West Cape May. Please keep Pam and her daughters, Kaleigh and Emaleigh, in your thoughts. Rest in peace, big fella.

Dish Of The Week Mother’s Day Brunch May 14 10 am - 2.30 pm
When you hear someone say the word Kentucky, you could probably assume they’re talking about one of three things — bourbon, the Derby or fried chicken. While it’s true that Colonel Sanders dishes out convenient road trip fare, there are no KFCs in these parts, so we decided to highlight the buttermilk fried chicken sliders that Elaine’s is serving up this Saturday for their annual Derby party. So, if you’re feeling so hungry you could eat a horse... don’t do that! Just buy a ticket, go say hay (get it?) and drink and eat the day away. Because after all, good people of Cape May, it’s Kentucky Derby day!
BEER OF THE WEEK
3 Courses for $35 Available Monday, Thursday, Friday & Sunday 322 Washington Street Mall, Cape May (609) 884-9119 • www.tishasfinedining.com
Fabulous Food & Cool Cocktails in a Casual Pub Atmosphere!
The Bog Style: Cranberry Shandy ABV: 3.9% Cape May Brewing Company Tart cranberry wheat beer blended with lemonade to create an uber-drinkable summer shandy. Designed to enjoy on those sweltering days, this beer is light and refreshing while still packing tons of flavor.
WINE OF THE WEEK Buena Vista “The Count” Sonoma Red Blend $16.99 from Collier’s Liquor Store 202 Jackson Street.
This field blend consists of Cabernet, Merlot, Zinfandel, Syrah, and Petite Syrah. This wine over delivers with aromas of chocolate, nutmeg and cinnamon. On the palate you get dark fruit and a long dense finish. Enjoy!
Cocktail Of The Week “A horse walks into a bar and the bartender asks, ‘Why such a long face?’” Yes, you’ve heard it a hundred times, but it’s still pretty funny and it’s relevant to this issue because... it’s all about horses! And speaking of old classics, the Mint Julep falls neatly into that category — after all these years, it’s still hands down the most popular cocktail of the Kentucky Derby. The combination of mint leaf, bourbon, simple syrup and crushed ice is a perfect way to start the season. A good place to try it? The Ebbitt Room at the Virginia hotel, where bartender Leo Morjakovs says he makes the best julep in town. Giddy up and get on over there to see if he’s right.

The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
I
do love a horse race. Back in the day, the premier race on the eastern coast was the Cape May Free-for-All, an open steeplechase measuring 10 furlongs, though sometimes 1000, and once in a while less than one, starting in The Brown Room, slingshotting past Uncle Bill’s and then zigzagging through the city before proceeding into the Admiral Hotel, up the splendid staircase and through Room 101, and culminating in a plunge into the swimming pool. Ideally, competitors were people riding horses, but there was an unfortunate comma in the rules that technically opened the event to any and everything. This being Cape May, the year the loophole was discovered saw a record entry that comprised 123 humans on equines ranging from Clydesdales thru Persian thoroughbreds to Shetland ponies. Another 12 entries were humans riding a variety of farm and exotic animals (there had been 13 but local boy Slava turned up on a tiger, which was unfortunately spooked by the sight of a kebab truck and savaged poor Slava), a Wildwood rider came on a giant Galapagos
tortoise, and an enterprising farm lad harnessed 3,000 chickens to be his steed. I believe they fluttered all the way to Ocean City before ditching him in the sea. Also, a fox riding a bear, a small dog (Young Albert) atop a giant rabbit, a team of tiny clowns on a mouse-drawn sled, and Ernie Hemingway riding a tiger shark. Sadly for Ernie, he had that boor Henry Ford towing the shark and himself in a glass tank, and was disqualified. I myself rode Shergar, a mysterious but rather quick steed I won in a poker game late
Curry! FINALLY... Indian food in Cape May!
one night in Martini Beach. I, of course won, but I confess it would have been a close thing had the bear, fox and mice not started fighting (assisted, I admit, by myself accidentally dropping a prize salmon in their path). Shergar and I leaped out of the hotel window ahead of the pack, plunging into the pool 10 floors below, me waving my top hat victoriously as I fell. My moment of glory was spoiled only a little when three score horsemen and women and several dozen confused cows, pigs, llamas and a tortoise followed us down. The final insult was Young Albert landing hard on my head, deliberately, I am sure. Obviously, there were complaints from animals rights organizations, and a high-profile court case in which that damnable bear turned on us and claimed coercion in return for 100 gallons of honey. Thankfully, Albert spoke up for me, or rather savaged the judge’s ankles, and in the ensuing chaos she threw out the case and so the only repercussion was that we were forbidden to have animals serve as steeds in city boundaries for 1,000 years, or until we “sorted ourselves out”.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, snap up local plants and flowers at the Nature Center
A
s spring sunshine invites you to plant flowers on your little piece of Cape May, consider including native plants. Find them at the Nature Center of Cape May’s annual plant sale on May 20 and 21. Long before Captain Mey sailed by our peninsula, the spring sun was luring people to Cape May. The Kechemeche tribe of the Lenni Lenape nation summered on these shores, brought by cool ocean breezes, abundant fishing and hunting, and fertile land. The Kechemeche, part of the Unalachtigo, or the “people who live near the ocean,” planted lima beans, corn and squash. They took advantage of native plants, enjoying beach plums and berries, but also tackling more challenging fare. For example, they used the roots of the plant we call tuckahoe to make flour. Although it isn’t as tasty as corn flour, tuckahoe flour was a common supplement to the Kechemeche diet, especially in winter. Tuckahoe is a labor-intensive plant to gather. The tubers grow in a connected root system, buried under a foot or two of mud.
Historians believe strong young women would work together to pull out the bulbs and drag them to the water’s edge, where older women would clean them and pound them into a pulp, which would then be turned into flour. Like most Native Americans, the Kechemeche were devastated by the diseases and social changes brought by European settlers. In 1735, they were forced to move west. Among the few who remained was a man called the King of the Kechemeche, King Nummy. King Nummy’s beloved sister, Sun Flower (or Snow Flower — sources disagree), married an English missionary, Ben
Thompson, and had several children. When the children were orphaned, King Nummy pledged to care for them. The descendants of those children still live in Cape May County, and about 170 of them are active members of the Kechemeche tribe. Together, tribe members work to share their heritage, meeting annually to hold sacred ceremonies and to educate others about their history. Unlike tuckahoe, most native plants are easy to deal with. They grow well in local soil without added chemicals. Native plants also enhance the ecosystem, offering food and shelter to birds and butterflies. Many of the plants are interesting in addition to being pretty, and they come with names like ironweed, Maltese cross, monkey flower and rattlesnake monster. A list of plants likely to be on offer can be found at njaudubon. org. Shrubs will be priced about $24, grasses about $7, and perennials $7, or three for $20. The plant sale will be held at the Nature Center, 1600 Delaware Avenue, Cape May, on May 20 and 21, from 10:00 to 4:00. Visit their website for more information.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My best friend and I just landed summer jobs in Cape May and have found an apartment we will share with two other guys. The one worry I have is that I am a neat freak and my roommate is not. I’d like to head this off before it becomes an issue. I wouldn’t want to gain a job but lose a friend in the process. And I don’t really know the other two guys. What if they are slobs as well? — Neatnik Dear Neatnik This is a problem and it is good you recognize it. The thing is — slobs are typically never bothered by anything and neatniks are typically bothered by everything that is amiss. I know money may be tight, but the simplest solution is for the four of you to agree to hire a house cleaner like Gofers to come
Wise answers to perplexing questions
in once a week and tidy up. In the interim, the Answer Lady suggests you set a line of demarcation. Pick a spot in the apartment that is off limits to others and which can serve as a safe space for you. Even if it’s only the area near your bed, make it your oasis and try to block out the rest. Dear Answer Lady My husband and I have been married 35 years. Last year we were finally able to buy a home in Cape May and move here yearround. The problem is — our three kids, their
spouses and their children keep coming to visit. One of the reasons for moving was to escape the responsibilities of being a 24-7 babysitter. Now we find that not only are we babysitters but a free hotel for them to check into whenever they choose. Believe it or not, we still like each other’s company and resent these uninvited invasions. What should we do? — Reluctant Parents Dear Reluctant First off, you must have been great parents for your children to want to still spend any time with you — irrespective of the builtin babysitting component. There is only one solution — put your foot down. Send all three kids a missive outlining the conditions under which they can stay. Define the number of visits and the lead time you need. Otherwise, tell them they must find accommodations elsewhere. There are plenty of family-friendly hotels in Cape May — the Victorian Motel, the Montrea and Congress Hall to name a few. If you really want to put them off, tell them you are currently embracing a nudist philosophy to help rejuvenate your sex life.

The Movie Column
I
By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
usually look up a Rotten Tomatoes score, which gives me an idea if a movie is going to be good... or “splat!” So imagine my surprise when I saw Collateral Beauty, which had a score of 12%. Wow, that’s pretty bad, right? Truth be told, I bypassed it when it was first out months ago because of that pathetic score. I got a chance to see it while on an airplane. The film stars Will Smith, Helen Mirren, Ed Norton, and a host of other wellknown actors. The tomatometer seemed to be hung up on this fact, saying the story was subpar compared to the caliber of this ensemble. Will Smith plays the owner of an ad agency who is at the top of his game. Very early in the story, and no spoilers here, he is thrown into a deep depression by the loss of his young daughter — the business suffers and is in danger of going under. Norton’s character leads a team of directors at the agency who want to have Smith declared incompetent. They want to sell the company to a potential purchaser without his majority share say-so. They
Will Smith in Collateral Beauty discover that in his grief he writes letters to three abstract entities (and mails them): love, time and death. They hire a local acting troop, led by Mirren, to portray the three personified. They hope to jar him back to reality and maybe get some evidence that he’s losing it mentally. Is this movie predictable? Oh yeah. Does it use clichés? If I saw one more character walk across the street in a fog to get honked at by a taxi, this review would’ve turned a lot more nasty. But these are lesser
infractions against the backdrop of dialogue that was extremely sensitive and at times very moving. I’m not going to sing its praises too highly, but I’m not going to give it 12% either! On the other end of the spectrum (or… meter?), Get Out is a mystery thriller. An interracial couple travels to meet her Caucasian family. When they do, a chilling reality unfolds that takes into account race relations and mind bending (for want of a better way to describe it). This was suspenseful and at times fun, but it got a 99% on the meter. That is way overstated, but with Catherine Keener, a personal favorite, and young comedian LilRey Howery, I can’t say it was totally bad. So Rotten Tomatoes is excellent… but not everything. That’s why you should have a book around like Flix You Missed! Disclosure: that’s my book about the films you probably missed in the past 10 years. Yeah, cheap plug, but check it out anyway at flixyoumissed.com.

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
ll birds are visually stunning, worth a moment of appreciation, at least. And in the eyes of those who keep lists of the bird species they intercept, one check mark is as good as another. That said there are simply some birds that rate higher in human esteem than others. One such bird is the swallow-tailed kite. Formally dressed in black-and-white attire, these blade-winged southern breeders are seen only a few times a year in Cape May — April through June is prime time. I’ve been fortunate enough to see six swallow-tailed kites locally. Six over the course of 40 springs. Less than one per spring. My first was of a bird flying low over Lake Lilly in Cape May Point; my most memorable was at Rea’s farm in the company of ardent hawk watchers Clay Sutton and Al Nicholson. And several years ago, while conducting my Monday morning bird walk at South Cape May, I spotted one over soaring over the dunes. All eyes skyward, Don Freiday suddenly
announced, “No, there’s two.” Finding no second bird with my bird, I scanned more widely and soon understood the discrepancy. There were actually three swallow-tailed kites. If we’d encountered three unicorns I wouldn’t have been more surprised. Swallow-taileds breed no farther north than the Carolinas. Egg collecting was a primary cause of the decline. As a bird that feeds primarily upon dragonflies, which it captures in the air with its talons, swallow-
taileds never drew the ire of farmers or gunners. Today, they garner only admiration and astonishment. Radio-tagging experiments have proven what has long been speculated. These ospreysized raptors do indeed cross the Gulf of Mexico en route to the insect-rich skies over the Amazon basin, where they spend the northern winter. Drawn north by the procreative tug of spring, it is birds that overshoot their southern breeding areas that we find here. Ferried north on southerly winds, the birds may be pinned in Cape May by northwest winds. Good luck. Keep your eyes to the sky. And even if you don’t find a swallow-tailed kite, the closely related Mississippi kite is as graceful —and these peregrine-sized aerialists are annual in Cape May. Last year Mississippi kites even bred in New Jersey. For information about both kites and North America’s other breeding birds of prey, I recommend the newly published book Birds of Prey whose visual appeal, with raptor images assembled by Kevin Karlson, carries the book.

SASHA is a beautiful four-year-old labrador retriever mix who was surrendered to the shelter because her owner was moving and unfortunately could not take her. If you are interested in Sasha, it would be best to come meet her multiple times so she can start to become comfortable with you. Once she has your trust, Sasha will make the perfect pet!
KYLO-REN is a senior lab mix with a lot of luster left in his life! His favorite thing to do at the shelter is play fetch in the yard with his beloved tennis ball. He walks very nicely on a leash and knows sit and paw. Kylo-Ren is house broken and politely whines to let you know he has to go outside. Come to the shelter today and meet this sweetheart!
CHIEF is a shepherd mix who came to the shelter a bit nervous. He is starting to slowly warm up to his new environment, but would much rather be in a loving home like he once had. Chief has lived with young children as well as other dogs. Playing fetch with his friends is Chief’s favorite thing to do. Stop by the shelter and let him impress you!
