CAROL LAUBE NORTH HALEDON, NJ
How long have you been coming here? Since the early eighties. My husband brought me my first time. I’ve been in love with him and Cape May ever since. Who are you normally with? I come with my husband most of the time. I also come with my cousins, other couples and my kids every chance I get! Favorite thing about Cape May? The peaceful beauty. It hits me as soon as I approach the bridge. I always say, “Heaven can’t be better than this.” The sunrises, sunsets, ocean and the beautiful Victorian buildings, they are all my favorite things. Cape May at Christmas, in a snowstorm or anytime. Every time I walk, ride or drive through town, I find something that I’ve never noticed before. I can’t narrow it down to one thing. Least favorite thing? When it’s really busy. I like the quieter times. Favorite restaurants? Mad Batter for breakfast and the music there in the evening. Aleathea’s, Cape May Fish Market, Tisha’s and Lucky Bones are some of our favorites. The Washington Inn is always a nice treat. Favorite places to stay? We like different places at different times of the year. We enjoy trying different hotels and B&Bs but we love being spoiled at Congress Hall. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? I would keep more businesses open year round.
NAUTI WORD OF THE WEEK
poop. deck
A deck at the rear of a ship, generally formed by the roof of a cabin. If a wave washes over this deck from behind the vessel, it is said to be “pooped.”
Mike DeMusz Painting Of The Week
BOOK OF THE WEEK We confer with Cape Atlantic Book Company to bring you a page turner... THE CIRCLE by Dave Eggers. Described as “Orwellian”, The Circle is terrifying, funny, all-too-real, suspenseful and visionary. Just how much do you believe in your right to know? How much of yourself are you willing to give up so that everyone else might have that same right to know you? “SECRETS ARE LIES, SHARING IS CARING, PRIVACY IS THEFT”; these are the tenets to this Open, Democratic, InternetDriven Society known as THE CIRCLE.
Our Staff Artist Mike DeMusz is creating a painting every week. Here he is at work on the latest. To see the completed work, check out the Exit Zero Facebook page. Better still, visit the Exit Zero Store at 109 Sunset Boulevard, across from the gas station. Even if this particular work is already sold, we have the whole Mike DeMusz inventory of prints here, along with other great Cape May artwork. You can call the store at 609-770-8479. We are open every single day from 10-5 (9-9 in the summer). Or buy online at ezstore.us.

Ramblings From The Editor
A
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
s a big supporter of spreading the news about the US Coast Guard’s role in this town (we would be a much poorer community without the existence of the country’s only USCG training base), I was happy to see that the third annual Coast Guard Community Festival was a success, despite the iffy weather this past weekend. Nearly 5,000 people visited the base on Saturday, said Nina Ranalli, executive director of Cape May Coast Guard Community Foundation, which runs the festival. There was a search-and-rescue demo, helicopter display, tours of Coast Guard cutters, a trolley tour explaining what happens at the base, and loads of family activities, live music and food. On Sunday, the festival moved to the ferry terminal, where there was a breakfast, a classic car show and various ceremonial events. All of it was aimed at strengthening the bonds between the Coast Guard and Cape May. Next year, the festival hopes to expand, with more events in and around the town, too. “Next year, we will add food vendors (a few
city’s chief financial officer, a role he will retain, which, says a happy mayor Chuck Lear, will save taxpayers money. “Neil stepped up to be interim city manager, and we’ve been really impressed by the way he has handled it,” Chuck told me. “We had some great candidates from outside, with a lot of experience, but we feel very comfortable moving forward with Neil.” More shocking evidence has emerged that the new Lear-led administration at City Hall is listening to the people. In a move which I find utterly reprehensible, the city has decided to move its next town hall meeting to Saturday, July 8. The meetings, which were arranged to encourage public input and demonstrate total transparency in city government, were planned to be held on Wednesdays, every quarter. But after hearing from several second-homeowners who wanted to attend but couldn’t make it here in midweek, the city has decided on a switch to Saturday for the next meeting. I don’t know about you, but I find this whole democratic approach very strange. Sure takes a bit of getting used to, doesn’t it? Until next week...
³ ran out), more community group participants, and we will dial up the Coast Guard demonstrations,” said Nina. “Hopefully we’ll also be able to have additional ships for people to tour, since the line grew long throughout the day.” We went to press before last Tuesday’s Cape May city council meeting, which passed a resolution appointing a new city manager. So I would like to belatedly congratulate Neil Young, who has taken over the position vacated by Bruce MacLeod, who retired at the end of the year. Neil was previously the

Dish Of The Week Mother’s Day Brunch May 14 10 am - 2.30 pm
There’s nothing better than mom’s home cooking. The smell, the taste, the pure hominess and nostalgia of childhood memories that can warm your heart in just one bite. We all have one go-to dish that is better than anyone else’s moms. And for Rusty Nail chef, Jimmy Burton, it’s his mother’s famous fried chicken. Burton’s late mother, Dorothy “Dot” Burton, was a Cape May icon famous for her comfort food. On Sunday, Jimmy will be serving up half of a southern fried chicken with a side of mac and cheese, collard greens and corn bread. So if you think that YOUR mom makes the best fried chicken in all the land, we think Jimmy would beg to differ.

WINE OF THE WEEK
Follow the Gull Style: IPA ABV: 5.5% Cape May Brewing Company
Tierra Divina Reds Red Blend $12.99 from Sunset Liquors 106 Sunset Boulevard
CMBC has brewed an absolutely crushable hop-bomb. Brewed with 5.5 pounds of hops per barrel of Citra, El Dorado, Amarillo, Cascade, and Azacca, Follow the Gull is super juicy, ridiculously tropical, ultra-drinkable, and immanently Cape May.
A dark, sexy, exotic, opulent and delicious red that is a perfect blend of carignane, petite sirah and zinfandel. It has a full medium-body and eats well with bistro, burgers, hearty pastas and pizza.
Cocktail Of The Week Remember when you were a kid and you wanted to make a quick buck? So you slaved all day at your lemonade stand trying to hustle money out of your neighbors, because let’s face it, you needed that thing that your parents wouldn’t buy. And your mother watched lovingly through the window, proud to see her little angel working hard. Now let’s fast forward to present day — mom could probably use a cocktail. Now we all know that parenting can be very thirsty work, so why not treat mom to a pink lemonade from Aleathea’s, located in the historic, quirky Inn of Cape May. The drink consists of citrus vodka, grenadine and lemonade. It’s got some sweetness, and a little kick. Just like the best moms.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
am conflicted about Mother’s Day, or Ma’s Day as we were made to call it in our house, in the mistaken belief that it was more “fun” and “casual”. Those of you who met the late and occasionally lamented Ma D’Catur will be shuddering and nodding as you read, most likely with a guilty backwards look over one shoulder in case Ma (or the spirit thereof) is waiting, with her knobkerry in hand, to dispense another extra-large helping of “mother’s love” from a seemingly bottomless dispensary. As you will have assumed, or know, Ma was not one for kindness, unless it was prefaced with great unkindness, and was possibly the original author of the “spare the rod, spoil the child” maxim. But she did like to observe the tradition of being celebrated by her many offspring (did I tell you I am one of 29 siblings? Well, I am, or was: I have no idea of the whereabouts of a dozen, and of the remainder, three are in prison, two run prisons and another seems to me a mustachio’d dictator in a small faraway nation: well done, Abigail!) with great but respectful jollity and many gifts.
She was particularly keen on handmade presents that fitted one of two descriptions: embroidered declarations of familial love, or in fact not handmade but nevertheless being a fine malt whisky. One year, Bertie, the eldest (who came to a bad end in an uprising somewhere brutal and foreign: or perhaps it wasn’t Wildwood after all) trumped us all by giving her a vintage Macallan inside a hand-knitted cosy that said “Who Loves Ya, Baby?” in the manner of the legendary detective Kojak (who was actually a real life person, who used to visit Cape May to solve cases every summer.

Except he was not bald, and did not like lollipops. And come to think of it was not in fact a policeman. But otherwise he was a dead ringer and clean inspiration. Now I think of it, he was rather fat, and might have been in a wheelchair, so perhaps was Frank Cannon or Ironside). Well, I have never seen Ma so happy: she downed the bottle in one, and then wore the cosy on her head for a week, until one day it accidentally got wet in a thunderstorm and shrank, cutting off the circulation of blood to her head, and causing the lady to pass out in Martini Beach, where she was enjoying her morning Bloody Mary. Only then was it discovered that Bertie had not in fact knitted it himself, as the label clearly stated a Chinese factory as origin. Once Ma was herself, she pursued Bertie with her stick, striking him a savage blow to the nose as he demanded, tearfully, to know why she was so upset. “Because your long-lost Da was Chinese!” she roared, “and it reminds me of him and his charming oriental ways!” Really, it was all too much, and we never talked of it again.

The Activity Column
T
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the allure of the yard sale
is the season for the yard sale, that win-win situation that recycles life’s necessities. Buyers get bargains on barely-used items. Sellers get to clean house, sifting, like archaeologists, through the layers in their homes. The barware from the college years is hidden under the gifts from old boyfriends, which are under the wedding gifts. Here’s the high chair that you no longer need because the baby is in kindergarten. Say goodbye to the toy kitchen, the shopping cart, the tiny easel, because you blinked, and that kindergartener just got her driver’s license. Out with those popup soccer nets and impossibly small shin guards; farewell to books like Junie B. Jones and Diary of a Wimpy Kid. The new driver needs room on her shelf for SAT prep books. Clearing out can be tough. Experts caution against reminiscing in the middle, because once you start sniffling, everything begins to look like a treasure. Be brutal. Your childhood doesn’t live in the box with the Bar-bies, and it’s hard to park the
Pink Passport Jet in the attic. Your memories don’t live in your great aunt’s tea set with 16 finger bowls, and someone out there lives a life that accommodates finger bowls. It’s the circle of stuff — someone out there will love the thing that’s in your way, and you will love knowing it’s being used. At my first Cape May garage sale, I bought a music stand from a teacher. I spent $2, because who knew how long she would play the clarinet? A dozen years and a little duct tape later, and it still gets daily use. Buyers should plan ahead for the most efficient shopping. Decide on your budget. Make a list, because nothing is a bargain if
you can’t use it. “Hard” items tend be safer, because you know you can wash or paint them. Look for holiday decor, kid’s stuff, sporting equipment, home decor, and tools. Get started early — you can treat yourself to a leisurely brunch later. Bring cash — small bills make bargaining easier, and bargaining is expected. Be prepared to walk away. You can always return at the end of the day. If the item hasn’t sold, the seller may meet your price. Bring your own bags. You can find a yard sale in Cape May on almost any spring weekend, but some weekends are almost guaranteed to yield great stuff. Shop at the West Cape May Borough Wide Yard Sale, May 13, starting at 8 a.m. Residents throughout the town will mine their homes for treasures that you can use to set up your summer home. On Saturday, May 27, at the Kiwanis Club Annual Yard Sale, pore through the riches at the Kiwanis Clubhouse, 1041 Beach Avenue, from 7-2. Next week: Bike against MS

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My birthday is at the end of the month and I suspect my boyfriend is going to propose. The problem is I’m not ready. I love him. I just don’t want to get married, yet. And I’m scared he’s going around telling everyone because his family is saying weird things to me. I don’t want to hurt him and definitely not embarrass him. Do I have no say in this? — Reluctant Bride Dear Reluctant Bride Tough one. The weasel thing to do is accept the ring and his proposal and delay on the date. The right thing to do is to talk to him ahead of time and hope he hasn’t picked the ring. Perhaps something like, “You know I love you honey. I want to be with you always, but I have the feeling you’re getting ready to
Wise answers to perplexing questions
propose and I’m not ready.” Of course, this all opens up a can of worms which both of you are hopefully prepared to address. You might also consider the possibility that he might just be planning a surprise birthday party. Isn’t there anyone you can? If his family is acting oddly, someone knows something. The Answer Lady suggests a romantic weekend at the Peter Shields Inn. It is the perfect place for healing any misunderstandings. Dear Answer Lady Mother’s Day is coming up and I know my
wife expects me to corral our kids and make sure they stop by the house and acknowledge the day. But, they are all in their 20s and I think they should be responsible enough to do this without prompting from me and if they don’t, suffer the consequences. I’ve played this role our whole parental life. Isn’t it time to stop? I don’t expect anything from Father’s Day except to be left alone to play golf. What do you think? — Hands Off Dear Hands Off Sure, that’s a great plan. Just know, if they don’t come by, YOU are the one who will suffer the consequences, not them. That’s why your wife is asking YOU to make sure to gently remind them that it is Mother’s Day. The Answer Lady is rolling her eyes. You and your wife are speaking two different languages and you are about to get a lesson in Venus 101. So, to avoid being expelled to Mars: YOU make sure YOU gather the clan together for breakfast at Uncle Bill’s Pancake House. There are any number of other choices but pancakes sound about right for 20-somethings. And all will be well in the universe.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
T
hink of it like Indiana Jones, only with Professor Jones having way more classroom time. The Lost City of Z has a lot of promise. Lost civilizations, great archeological finds, unmapped past civilizations. In the fictional world of brave explorers, hunt for treasure, and restless natives, there would likely be more adventure. In this biographical movie, that adventure was balanced more with academic discourse and scholarly debate. And you know how much more thrilling that made this flick! Percy Fawcett is a British explorer from the 19th century, certainly an early precursor to our famous Jones character. He’s played by Hollywood hot property Charlie Hunnam. His explorer sidekick is played by Robert Pattinson, from the Twilight series. And Jack, Percy’s son is played by another up-and-coming actor, Tom Holland (who has been playing the new iteration of Spider Man in recent movies). So there is no lack of celebrity power in this film. Fawcett started by taking on the job
It has its moments but Lost City of Z disappoints of mapping much of the Amazon in South America nearly 200 years ago. When he got there and began exploring, he found remnants of civilizations that led him to believe that the natives were more intelligent and their society more advanced than originally thought. Back in England, the adventurer had to deal with skepticism about his discoveries. An older explorer skeptic, James Murray (played by Angus Macfadyun), urged Fawcett to let him accompany him on one expedition — not the wisest move! Meantime, Fawcett’s
home life was always tenuous because of his extensive travel. His wife Nina is played by Sienna Miller. Somehow though he seems to be away years at a time, they have three children. Like celebrity, there is not necessarily lack of adventure scenes either. It’s just that if you’re waiting for a chunky, golden skull, rolling boulder payoff, this isn’t that film. What you get is a lot of conflict in Fawcett’s discoveries. There’s a lot of debate on whether or not he should explore the jungles where he goes. There’s a lot of arguing whether or not there was a lost city. Ultimately, what you are left with is a movie that highlights the difficulties of those people who want to make new discoveries and take on new adventures. There is a universality in themes like that. In the end the movie gets high reviews and high praise. And while I liked it a lot, a movie about an adventurer shouldn’t have so many sluggish moments. I’m not demanding outlandish stunts and peril, but don’t take me to the Lost City of Zzzzzz. Ouch. I know. Bad joke.

Bird Droppings
A
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
s I write, the players are maneuvering into position for Spring’s Greatest Spectacle, one that joins the lives of a 450 million-year-old sea creature and a bird whose wings vault hemispheres. I’m speaking of the annual mating ritual of Horseshoe Crabs and the waves of Red Knot whose migration depleted bodies are absolutely dependant upon the crabs tribute of energy rich eggs. A frenzy of feasting and procreation is about to carpet the beaches of Delaware Bay with crabs and birds. It’s a spectacle in league with the great wildebeest migration in East Africa, the Monarch Roost near Mexico City and the March of the Penguins and it’s in our own backyard. Head for places like Reed’s Beach two hours after high tide. The crabs deposit eggs at the high tide line. Tens of millions of lipid rich packets that the birds knock back with gastronomic aplomb. Time is running out, the birds must double their weight and complete their journey to the High Arctic before June. Arctic summers are brief and while shorebird chicks are precocial two months is not a long time to get in
shape for a 9,000-mile journey to the opposing end of the planet. Why don’t the birds just stay here in Cape May where the living is easy? Because migration allows birds to take advantage of seasonal resources and spread life across the planet. If all living things spent their lives in temperate places, most of the planet would be lifeless. In summer, warmed by 24-hour sunlight, the Arctic comes alive. Birds, flowers, insects, rodents are everywhere. Hundreds of bird species spend a portion of their lives in the Arctic,
making this remote and fragile biome the incubator for many of the bird species Cape May hosts in winter — black and surf scoter, longtailed duck and even a few red knot. Not all knot fly to Patagonia, a few winter on the beaches of Stone Harbor Point and Wildwood. Ma Nature has learned not to put all your eggs in one basket. But since the pioneering studies of Alexander Wilson in the first decade of the 1800s, crabs and birds have been gathering every May on the beaches of Delaware Bay. Long may the streak continue. It’s part of your birthright and a tribute to the good conservation mindedness that keeps Delaware Bay’s marine environment as healthy and rich as it was when Swedish, Dutch and English explorers anchored here five centuries ago. Not as long as the crabs have been coming here but a pretty respectable tenure for a species that has been on the planet for a fraction of the time horseshoe crabs have existed. Our species goes back to the age of mastodons. The crabs were already old when dinosaurs were young.
