Mystery Photo Contest Know your way around America’s Original Seaside Resort? Every week, we shoot a picture of an island landmark. If you think you know the answer, email info@exitzero.us and write MYSTERY PHOTO in the subject line. Don’t forget to tell us your name and address. Entries must be received by the Monday after publication. If you don’t like emailing, don’t snail mail — it won’t get here in time. Instead, call 609-770-8479. The first name picked from the correct entries wins a 2017 Discount Deck. The answer and winner is posted on our Facebook page every Friday.

YVONNE KUEMMERLE PHOENIXVILLE, PA

How long have you been coming here? Since 1944 – I don’t remember much about that summer since I was only two years old. I remember hearing stories of the hurricane when refrigerators, washers, and boardwalk benches were floating up Jefferson Street. Who are you normally with? My family and friends when I am in Cape May. To this day, many Cape May friends are from my childhood. Favorite thing about Cape May? I love the feeling of community. Everyone is so warm and friendly. We are so much more than a seashore resort. There is so much to do when you are here. We love the beach, shopping, eating and entertainment (especially the shows at Cape May Stage). Least favorite thing? The traffic and parking can be a problem at the height of the season. Favorite restaurants? There are so many great restaurants in Cape May. My ultimate favorite has always been the Washington Inn. Favorite places to stay? I love staying in my own house. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? I would have to say the parking would be the one thing I would like to see changed. Also, bikers forget they have to follow traffic rules.

NAUTI WORD OF THE WEEK

cat. head

A large wooden beam that extends from vessels at a 45 degree angle and is used to assist in raising and lowering the anchor. Many catheads have had the faces of lions or other large cats carved into them.

Mike DeMusz Painting Of The Week

BOOK OF THE WEEK We confer with Cape Atlantic Book Company to bring you a page turner... THE CIRCLE by Dave Eggers. Described as “Orwellian”, The Circle is terrifying, funny, all-too-real, suspenseful and visionary. Just how much do you believe in your right to know? How much of yourself are you willing to give up so that everyone else might have that same right to know you? “SECRETS ARE LIES, SHARING IS CARING, PRIVACY IS THEFT”; these are the tenets to this Open, Democratic, InternetDriven Society known as THE CIRCLE.

Our Staff Artist Mike DeMusz is creating a painting every week. Here he is at work on the latest. To see the completed work, check out the Exit Zero Facebook page. Better still, visit the Exit Zero Store at 109 Sunset Boulevard, across from the gas station. Even if this particular work is already sold, we have the whole Mike DeMusz inventory of prints here, along with other great Cape May artwork. You can call the store at 609-770-8479. We are open every single day from 10-5 (9-9 in the summer). Or buy online at ezstore.us.

Dish Of The Week If you haven’t jumped on the clean eating train yet, we’ve got just the dish that might change your mind, the acai bowl. Now, if you’re not familiar with acai (ah-sah-ee), it’s a delicious tropical fruit superfood from Brazil that is well-deserving of all the buzz it’s been receiving. Mix acai with fat-free yogurt, topped with fresh banana, strawberry, housemade granola and Cape May honey and you’ve got yourself one healthy and refreshing, yet filling meal. Bike on over to the Juice Caboose on Washington Street before or after your ride and ask Todd Atkinson to whip you up one of his popular bowls. Healthy never tasted this good.

Fabulous Food & Cool Cocktails in a Casual Pub Atmosphere!

WINE OF THE WEEK

Paradise 160 Style: India Pale Lager ABV: 6.8% Cape May Brewing Company

St Mary’s Drive Dry Creek Old Vine Zinfandel

A high-octane India Pale Lager that’s been thoroughly Americanized by dry-hopping it into oblivion with a combination of some of our most desirable hops: Wakatu and Hallertau Blanc. It’s eminently crushable with a mind-blowing nose.

This Zin boasts flavors of chocolate, plum and cassis. Old Vine Zinfandel is known for its depth of flavor and spicy, earthy characteristics. The deep color and firm structure are enhanced by the addition Petite Sirah Enjoy with lamb, veal and steak dishes. Enjoy!

$13.99 from Collier’s Liquor Store 202 Jackson Street.

Cocktail Of The Week This one was quite tough to come up with. Mostly for legal purposes. Now just to preface, and save our own butts, we aren’t suggesting you consume this cocktail before or during your bike ride. Especially if you plan on conquering the West Cape May bridge. But what you do on your own time is completely up to you. Now, if you WERE deciding to go for a trek to find that one delicious cocktail that will make every grueling pedal worth it, then bike on over to Nauti Spirits in North Cape May and try their refreshing west side cocktail. It’s made with vodka, fresh squeezed lemon juice and mint. The perfect drink you won’t feel guilty sipping down after all those calories you just torched!

Must-Have Of The Week

Searching our favorite places in Cape May for those goodies you need to own now! We went in search of some bike-appropriate products and found the answer from Cape Island Bikes, located at 135 Sunset Boulevard in West Cape May and their newly expanded shop in Congress Hall. The Items: Bike locks. The Appeal: You don’t want to get your bike stolen do you? Although Cape May is a very safe town, unfortunely there are quite a few stolen bike cases on the island. Pick up one of these simple solutions and avoid having your day ruined! The Price: Ranges between $12.00-$30.00.

“Being a food critic, I was wowed by the flavors, texture and presentations of the rack of lamb. We strongly recommend the Washington Inn to anyone who loves good food, good wine and ambiance.”

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

T

hat’s not a bicycle,” I opined to the callow youth riding past me on a construction that looked like a metal coat-hanger on two tractor tires. “It’s a cruiser,” he chirped, “with 29-inch wheels!” I considered asking for a turn, but the prospect of having to indulge in chatter with anyone under 25 bores me, so I instead rapped the spotty fellow sharply atop the head with my walking cane, stunning him, then took the bicycle. I rode it around the block, displaying all the agility and poise that made me Olympic Fanciful Balancing champion three times in a row. I pedaled up to the young chap, who was nursing a goose-egg bump on his head, and delivered my verdict. “Stuff and nonsense,” I said. “A travesty that would have H.G. Wells crying into his absinthe.” (It is a little known fact that H.G. was a regular visitor to Cape May, and indeed wrote The Time Machine in Carney’s one fine night. Also, he was a fine judge of bicycles, and racing llamas, though that is another story.

In My Day, a bicycle was only a bicycle if it weighed over 200lbs, and was made from industrial steel and mahogany, with solid India rubber tires. Initially we only allowed penny farthings, surely the king of bicycles, and I swear the majestic sight of city gents (and ladies, who were permitted to ride side saddle, so long as no more than an inch of ankle was visible, for fear of driving impressionable gentlemen into a froth of desire) riding up and down the boardwalk in summer was so majestic it would have brought a tear to you eye. The only downside was in attempting

to dismount: it took a certain amount of gymnastic poise, or a special set of high steps and after that dreadful day when three Shoebies on rented Penny Farthings were unable to get off their steeds, and too embarrassed to ask for help (for fear of being ridiculed: they were correct in this: a gent who could not ride his Penny Farthing was a pariah) and so cycled around all day and into the night, at which point, thirsty and hallucinating, they all rode off The Point by accident, and were consumed by a shoal of herrings. Oh yes, herrings: it was a Full Moon. Eventually we relaxed the rules, so as to allow the sport to filter down, but we took a dim view of tires containing air, and saddle with springs. Also, we did not favor brakes: a cycle ride is all the more fun when one has to calculate in advance once’s speeds and turn angles. We did allow anchors, out of respect to our seafaring roots, but I must say, if there’s one thing worse than riding off the road on a sharp bend, it’s throwing out an anchor and stopping dead, or rather having your bicycle stop dead and continue on at high speed.

The Activity Column

I

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, riding your bike, and then some

f you’re out in Cape May on the evening of Sunday, May 21, you may see some people walking with the stiff gait of the exhausted biker. Offer them a beer, an ice pack and your seat. These heroes of the long haul will have completed the Coast the Coast Bike MS tour, and they may in-spire you to try a long charity bike ride. Bike MS, organized by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, is an established fundraising challenge for cyclists, with distances ranging from 25 to 170 miles. Long riders will begin at Monmouth University in West Long Branch on Saturday, and finish at Cape May’s Coast Guard train-ing center on Sunday. It’s an intense physical challenge, but participants say the chance to fight MS is worth it. MS is that mysterious disease of the central nervous symptom that strikes people in the prime of life, between age 20 and 50. MS disrupts messages to and within the brain, leading to symptoms ranging from numbness to memory loss to blindness to paralysis. Symptoms may

come and go, and this unpredictability leads to additional challenges. Bike MS raises money for research into the cause and cure of MS, and also funds support groups, referral services, advocacy and training for people with MS. A long ride like this is not something you do on the spur of the moment, and it’s not something you try on your beach bike. You’ll have to invest in equipment and time. Take a good look at your fitness level, and check with your doctor. Those “six weeks to a century” programs are for fit people who already ride two hours at a time. Allow yourself some leeway and you are less likely

to face overuse injuries. Equip yourself with a road bike, a helmet, a jersey with pockets, padded gloves, clip-in shoes, and padded shorts — apparently, you really don’t want to skimp on the shorts. Get a GPS to track your training routes, and sunglasses that stay on your face. Arm your bike with a seat bag repair kit containing spare tubes, a CO2 cartridge and a multi-tool; arm yourself with the knowledge to change the tire. Although most charity rides have support vehicles, you don’t want to be stuck waiting for them if you just need a simple repair. On ride day, you’ll need to bring drinks and energy snacks, like those gels marathoners use, and aim to get in at least 200 calories an hour. By the time you feel thirsty or hungry, it’s too late. Also bring some cash, a credit card, your insurance card and identification. As you ride, keep yourself loose by moving your hands around so your muscles don’t lock up, and don’t linger more than 15 minutes at the rest stops. Next week: Meet Billy Bishop

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My 12-year-old daughter has suddenly started wearing black. Like every day. From head to toe my little girl went from happy pink and light green to depressing black overnight. I don’t know what I’ve done wrong. I, myself, am strictly a Lilly Pulitzer girl. Where did this funereal attire come from? I don’t want to make a “thing” about it for fear she starts dying her hair black and asking about body piercing and tattoos, but there must be something I can do to dissuade her. — Girl Gone Goth Dear GGG You might try to find out if something else is going on, but you mustn’t discourage her efforts to express herself because it will end up badly for both of you. Clearly she is

Wise answers to perplexing questions

hellbent on creating a different fashion style for herself from your own and should be given the freedom to so — IF that’s all it is. On the other hand, she is 12 so maybe some gentle nudges and a compromise. The Answer Lady suggest one day a week of color. To encourage her, a mother-daughter outing is a must. Take her to Victorious and Cash and Clive. Although they specialize in adult attire, depending on her body type, you might find something quite chi-chi and grown up which will encourage her to break the goth look at

least for a day. Dear Answer Lady I work with a woman who is obsessed with her smartphone. While board meetings are being conducted, she is texting. At staff meetings, she is texting. During award ceremonies she is texting. In fact, she texts while biking along the promenade. I so want to say something to her, but she’s a bit imposing and I’m afraid of her. The rudeness and bad manners of it all is what galls me. What do you suggest? – Miss Manners Matter Dear Manners Matter Stop at Kaleidoscope and pick up a copy of the book Unplugged. Put it on her desk when she’s not looking. BUT, it is not untoward for you to say very politely and nicely, “Would please put your phone down, it’s a distraction?” If she doesn’t, it’s also not untoward for you to go to the department head and ask that the use of phones be banned during meetings. You are absolutely correct to note that it is illmannered and rude. Most of us are guilty of such behavior. We should all learn to unplug and look each other in the eye when we talk.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

E

very movie should (repeat: should) have an intriguing premise, but it is in expert execution that you achieve… magic! Sleight is an astonishing fantasy steeped in some of the worst realities of our times. It is nimble, sure-footed, and sets new standards in the thriller genre. Bo (played by Jacob Latimore) gives up a promising college scholarship in the sciences when his mother dies. His father died years before. He struggles to stay together with his younger sister (Storm Reid). He is a gifted street magician, but the money is not enough. He starts selling street drugs. When he gets in too far, everything begins falling apart and everyone he loves is threatened. He must use his extraordinary gifts for magic and science to combat the evil confronting him. As with any magic trick, this premise is a good start. You know what I mean. Anyone can tell you what will happen next as they perform a trick — like I said: every movie should have an intriguing premise. It’s only in savvy execution that magic is achieved. There is gutsy and sometimes gut-

Watch Sleight... it’s pure magic! wrenching action in this film. The suspense is palatable and the build up to the end only feeds your curiosity to see how this works out. And the finish delivers. This movie is billed as a sci-fi/fantasy thriller. Whenever I see the word “thriller” I don’t know what to expect. And not in a good way, like “how excellent will this be?” As the story progressed, I waited for a fumble, an error. Will this disappoint by taking a turn that is either too gory, woefully weak, or frankly juvenile and flat out stupid? Thankfully none

of that happened! Latimer is genuine in the lead role, as is Reid playing his sister. They are both beginning to make names for themselves as they, despite their young ages, have been in a variety of notable films. Latimer played the character of Time in the Will Smith movie Collateral Beauty. There was outstanding supporting performances from Dulè Hill as the totally evil drug lord and Seychelle Gabriel as Bo’s love interest. It would seem that with the success of Moonlight more films featuring AfricanAmerican casts are gaining traction in theaters. The producers of Sleight also released a movie reviewed here a couple weeks ago called Get Out. That film is getting higher praise and more audience attendance (subsequently way more money!). For my money, Sleight delivers more social commentary, more authentic action, and overall more of what I go to the theater for. This movie engages you with its premise and impresses you with its execution. Like any good magic trick. Go be amazed.

Bird Droppings

I

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

t’s America’s alarm clock. As soon as your bedroom window goes from night to morning gray, you can count on American robin to greet the day with its caroling song. But waking up America is something of an auxiliary ambition. The song’s real purpose is to post notice to other male robins that this corner of the planet belongs to him. Running if grass is clipped short, hopping if you and your mower have been lax, the birds are ferocious predators of earthworms and grubs which they extract with stabbing probes of their bright yellow bills. In winter, robins switch over to fruits and berries but if a warm day brings worms to the surface for a bit of procreation, robins are quick to adapt. Singing begins in March and gains in richness and volume as hours of sunlight increase and robin hormone begin to rage. I’ve known robins, triggered by the light, to sing all night on the vegetated borders of all-night gas stations and convenience

stores. Next up in the morning lineup will be northern cardinal, whose song is a series of repeated whistles, sometimes rendered in two parts. Mourning doves’ plaintive cooing is next in the morning hit parade and soon thereafter it will be hard to distinguish one bird from the next as all our local breeders break into song. It’s the easiest birding you can find. Just stay beneath the covers and pin names to the members of the chorus.

The one going chirpity, chirpity chirp is Carolina wren. The rapid, rising and falling trill is house wren. The lively warble that ends on a discordant note is house finch. And laughing gull? You know this call and if you do, you can learn all the rest — the rules don’t change, only the cadence, pitch and pattern. So add another dimension to your enjoyment of life. Immerse yourself in the world of sound. In a few short days you’ll be amazing your friends by the scope of your knowledge. But don’t dawdle — by June, many nesting birds have called it a season and greet the dawn with sheathed beaks. So listen up. It might be called bird watching but when it comes to enjoying birds, vocalizations add a trumping auditory richness to your study that extends 360 degrees. Start one bird at a time. There’s no need to try and learn them all at once. And no matter how experienced you are, all birders wish they were better with bird song. It’s a universal lament.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

SASHA is a beautiful four-year-old labrador retriever mix who was surrendered to the shelter because her owner was moving and unfortunately could not take her. If you are interested in Sasha, it would be best to come meet her multiple times so she can start to become comfortable with you. Once she has your trust, Sasha will make a perfect pet!

WONKA is a labrador retriever and American staffordshire terrier mix who was named Wonka after his chocolate coat. He came into the shelter as a stray and sadly noone has come looking for him. Wonka would be best as the only pet in the household. If you’re looking for something sweet, adopt Wonka today!

LUCKY is a pit bull terrier mix who, unlike his name, is down on his luck! It seems like the chips have been stacked against poor little Lucky. He is very social and loves to be around people. Lucky is learning his manners that will make him a perfect pet in his new home. Take a gamble on Lucky and maybe everyone will win!

CRUMPET is quite the pretty little lady with her glowing amber eyes and flowing black hair. This picture does not do her beauty justice! Guess you’re just going to have to stop by the shelter and see for yourself! Crumpet is looking for a companion who will brush her, feed her fancy feast and let her bask in the sun. Could this be you?

MILLIE lived outside for years feeding off a nice person who time to time let her inside. Somewhere along the way, Millie lost track of home and was dumped off at the shelter. She is quite a cutie pie with black and brown markings overtop a white coat. Give Millie a chance to have a permanent home and adopt today!

HEATHCLIFF is quite the little romancer. His orange coat and adorable face make him one desirable kitty. Heathcliff lived outside with his brother and their buddies until he was picked up and taken to the shelter. Although he is used to his freedom, Heathcliff is really enjoying daily meals and attention. Come meet your new lover boy today!
