Mystery Photo Contest Know your way around America’s Original Seaside Resort? Every week, we shoot a picture of an island landmark. If you think you know the answer, email info@exitzero.us and write MYSTERY PHOTO in the subject line. Don’t forget to tell us your name and address. Entries must be received by the Monday after publication. If you don’t like emailing, don’t snail mail — it won’t get here in time. Instead, call 609-770-8479. The first name picked from the correct entries wins a 2017 Discount Deck. The answer and winner is posted on our Facebook page every Friday.
MARC SHENFIELD CROTON ON HUDSON, NY
How long have you been coming here? Since 1984. The first time I came by myself for Victorian Week and stayed at the Queen Victoria. Joan and Dane Wells, the owners, didn’t even have a car then, so I drove them to the banquet at the Christian Admiral. I’ve come every year since. Who are you normally with? Now I come with my wife of 25 years. Our daughter and her family love to visit. Favorite thing about Cape May? The Victorian buildings. And hopping on a MAC trolley to see them from on high. Least favorite thing? The asphalt boardwalk — instead of wood. Favorite restaurants? My wife is a great cook and takes advantage of the wonderful local fish and produce she gathers on her bike. When we go out, we love Louisa’s, where we had our first dinner together in Cape May, the Blue Pig and the counter at the Lobster House coffee shop where we always have lunch on our way into town. Favorite places to stay? We’ve owned our own Victorian home on Corgie Street for 12 years and love the neighborhood. Owning the Cottage is like having our own bed and breakfast! If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? I would love to see more well-designed restrooms and foot showers on the beachfront. (And a few more Victorian buildings, too.)
NAUTI WORD OF THE WEEK
fut. tock
Curved timbers used to form the interior ribs on the hulls of wooden ships. This prevents any tendency of the top itself to tilt relative to the mast.
Mike DeMusz Painting Of The Week
BOOK OF THE WEEK We confer with Cape Atlantic Book Company to bring you a page turner... STRANGER THAN FANFICTION by Chris Colfer. A funny, heartbreaking, unforgettable novel about friendship and fame. When four fans jokingly invite a world famous actor on a cross-country road trip, they are shocked that he actually takes them up on it. What they come to learn about the life of the mysterious person they thought they knew will teach them about the power of empathy and the unbreakable bond of true friendship.
Our Staff Artist Mike DeMusz is creating a painting every week. Here he is at work on the latest. To see the completed work, check out the Exit Zero Facebook page. Better still, visit the Exit Zero Store at 109 Sunset Boulevard, across from the gas station. Even if this particular work is already sold, we have the whole Mike DeMusz inventory of prints here, along with other great Cape May artwork. You can call the store at 609-770-8479. We are open every single day from 10-5 (9-9 in the summer). Or buy online at ezstore.us.

Ramblings From The Editor
I
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
don’t normally poke my nose into Lower Township politics, even though I am, by half the width of a street, a resident — the opposite side of the street belongs to the People’s Republic of West Cape May. But a big controversy has been brewing in Lower ever since plans were announced to construct a sidewalk where the OTHER beachfront scene exists, far from the hue and cry of Cape May. I’ve spent a fair bit of time around that area — walking my dogs on one of the few dog-friendly beaches around, skinny-dipping in my more foolish days, falling-down paddleboarding, indulging at Harpoon Henry’s, now Harpoons on the Bay. And, countless times, I’ve visited my great friend Victor Grasso, who lives a couple blocks back from the beachfront. I’ve always appreciated the rustic vibe of the area — it’s more Cape Cod than Cape May. And yet, when I first heard of the plans to offer a new sidewalk, I was more or less in favor. Right now, you can’t stroll alongside the dunes, enjoying a view of the water, without walking on the road. That could be considered a safety hazard, although in the 14 years I’ve
been a Lower Townshipper, I believe there have been very few accidents, or even incidents. To me, constructing a sidewalk seems a pretty good way of allowing as many people as possible to enjoy this lovely little slice of the Cape. But a lot of residents hate the idea, citing the damage that will be caused to the dunes, which not only protect the area from flooding but also are home to wildlife, whose habitats we should be protecting, not destroying. I promised a nice man who came by the office last week to voice his opposition to the
project that I would look into this issue more closely than I had previously. From the research and interviews I’ve done, my conclusion is that the talk of dune damage is probably more alarmist than rooted in reality. A municipality cannot get a CAFRA permit from the state unless they’ve done their due diligence — the state typically take its beachfronts seriously. Let’s be honest — this is a classic NIMBY issue. People who live on or near the beachfront do not want to see people congregating on concrete sidewalks. You can’t blame them — it’s a blight on the great views they currently enjoy. But this has to be balanced against the enjoyment and convenience this addition will provide for other residents and visitors. It hasn’t helped that the township has done a horrible job of presenting this to the public — unhelpful, sarcastic remarks from the engineers, Cape May Court House-based Mott MacDonald, has only added to the friction. And my own hackles rise when I see no-bid contracts awarded, which happened in this case. Will be interesting to see how this one develops. Oh... and happy Memorial Day!

Dish Of The Week This little piggy went to the market, this little piggy stayed home, this little piggy had roast beef, this little piggy had none, and this little piggy went wee-wee-wee all the way to the Rusty Nail to watch grill master Jimmy Burton roast locally raised piggies from Beach Plum Farm on his smoker. And since it’s Memorial Day Weekend, and we’ve got barbecueing on our mind, it’s a Monday must. Choose between the Piggy Platter which includes pulled pork, corn on the cob, baked beans, coleslaw and cornbread. Or a pulled pork sandwich on a brioche bun with baked beans and coleslaw. It’s a pig-out paradise and a great way to kick off the summer season.

Fabulous Food & Cool Cocktails in a Casual Pub Atmosphere!
Brothel Madam Style: Golden Sour ABV: 6.8% Cape May Brewing Company Named for the ghost of the former manager of Cape May’s Queen Victoria Inn, Brothel Madam has bright acidity, a firm, rustic funk, and a rich, luscious finish. For optimum fruitness, drink fresh. To play up the funk, age it out.
WINE OF THE WEEK Castlebank Dry Creek Valley Red Blend
$12.99 from Collier’s Liquor Store 202 Jackson Street. This wine is a blend of Zin, Syrah, and Petite Sirah. This bold beauty is layered with aromas and flavors of blueberry, blackberry and cassis. Enjoy!!
Cocktail Of The Week When throwing a barbecue, typically you want to have cocktails that are prepared in bulk, so you don’t have to play bartender all night. And they should be light and refreshing, because, one, you will be filling up on heavy foods, and two, hydration is key in the hot sun. Although The Crab House at Two Mile Landing serves only pitchers of beer and not cocktails, we still think they sling up some pretty tasty barbecue-friendly drinks like their strawberry lemon crush made with strawberry vodka, triple sec, freshly squeezed lemon juice and lemon-lime soda, with a splash of grenadine. Enjoy Memorial Day weekend on their outdoor patio with the sun on your face and one of these in your hand.

The Old Fogey
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
H
ow I love the smell of amateur barbecues! The unique cocktail of store-bought self-lighting fuel, cheap meat, sweat and anxiety, with a top note of singed eyebrows and punctured masculinity. I stroll round town, shouting “call that a barbecue? You think you’re a man but you’re only a boy!” and “remove your tatties, sir, and put them on the barbecue, for you are emasculated by your inadequacy!” and other such encouragement. And do not get me started on those “disposable” barbecues that are nothing more than a flammable tin full of gizzards and giblets for poltroons and those shiftless young fops that one of my nameless great-great grandchildren told me as “post-millennials”. I must say I had no idea there were “millennials” and so shuddered at the notion of anything post that. I hate change. In the old days, when Cape May was the beef capital of the world, and indeed worshipped all kinds of meat idols and totems, we used to herd a few thousand head of cattle onto a colossal iron griddle the size of a city

block, and then fire it up! I admit, the first few minutes were rather hard to stomach, what with the noise and smelll, but really, once the iron was glowing hot, thanks to the hundred tons of driftwood donated from Wildwood (when I say “donated” I mean taken with the assumption that had we asked, it would have been freely given, at Colt-45-point), then eventually the smell was rather mouthwatering. People had to retrieve their beef themselves, and long sticks were forbidden: salivating barbecue devotees had to race onto the hot metal with a knife and a plate, and were

applauded when they then ran off, smoking and blackened. And if, once in a while, they didn’t re-emerge, then really, that simply added to the flavor. Similarly, the occasional pesky tax collector or Wall Street banker who strayed into town, were added to the grill. Eventually, though, those tiresome health and safety people came by and demanded we stop, and so the whole ceremony went underground: those of you who are members of the ultra-secret Cape May BBQ Club know what I mean, and gather once a month in summer for a special 10-course banquet. I am a little bored by having to wait for dinner to be grilled, and so dig out my old WW2 flamethrower and set fire to any and all food I find on my strolls. Young Albert approves of those annoying flocks of carnivorous seagulls being chargrilled in such a manner, and most evening the beach echoes to the sound of deathly shrieks, happy barking and me shouting “You want some? You want some?” and the gentle aroma of napalm.

O
Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, opening weekend at Cape May Stage
ne hundred years after the United States entered the Great War, Cape May Stage kicks off its 2017 season with Meet Billy Bishop, the story of Canada’s most famous flying ace. In 1914, William Avery Bishop was an unlikely hero. A self-described “spoiled rich kid,” Billy was on the verge of being expelled from the Royal Military College for cheating when war rendered schoolboy mischief irrelevant. Like many of his friends, Bishop joined the infantry. After a bout with pneumonia, he was reassigned to the cavalry. In France, he took to the air, saying, “It was the mud, I think, that made me take to flying… I had succeeded in getting myself mired to the knees when suddenly, from somewhere out of the storm, appeared a trim little aeroplane… when I turned to slog my way back through the mud my mind was made up. I knew there was only one place to be on such a day — up above the clouds in the summer sunshine.” The lifespan of new pilots was 11 days, but Bishop had the right blend of skill, situ-
John Cooke
ational awareness and luck. He survived and thrived, first making it through the “Bloody April” of 1917, and earning a reputation among his German opponents, who called him Hell’s Handmaiden. Bishop is credited with 72 victories — aka enemy aircraft forced down in combat. He earned the Victoria Cross and the Distinguished Flying Cross. While recognizing him as the top fighter pilot in the British Empire, King George reportedly said, “Well, Captain Bishop, you’ve been a busy bugger.” After the war, Bishop found success in the oil business, raised two children, and served as a military
recruiter during World War Two. Bishop died at aged 56, looking 20 years older, according to his son — as if the war never left him. Meet Billy Bishop fully explores the impact of war on Bishop’s life. The show explores the initial adventure, the snobbery the English directed at “Colonials,” the courage of “just surviving,” and the sheer sadness of war as it traces a boy’s journey to manhood. The songs combine bounce and bitterness, noting that “war is not the place for emotion” while celebrating camaraderie and friendship, singing “we’ll never be that young again” while mourning that “most of us never got old.” The Show plays at Cape May Stage from May 24 through June 23, Wednesday through Saturday at 8pm and Sunday at 3. The play is written by John Gray and Eric Peterson and is directed by Marlena Lustik. Max Baker and Sam Saint Ours star. Tickets range from $24 to $40, and the play is recommended for ages 10 and up. There is a Pay-What-You-Wish performance on June 9, and the theater’s popular Talk-Back is on June 16.Next week: Strawberry Festival

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I work with a girl that I really like, but I’m not sure she likes me. She’s very friendly, but she’s nice to everyone so I can’t tell if she’ll tell me to get lost if I approach her. I don’t want to risk letting her know how I feel because we work together and I don’t think I could take being with her every day knowing I have no chance with her. Should I ask her out? Should I just stand by and wait and see? I hate this. — Standing on the Edge Dear Edge You’re wise to be cautious, but this doesn’t have to be an all-or-nothing situation. Baby steps are always best when navigating untested waters. When you feel the moment is right, ask her is she’d like to grab a coke at Dellas’ soda fountain or a dessert
Wise answers to perplexing questions
at Tommy’s Folly. Either place is perfect. The trip to the soda fountain is like going back in time and at Tommy’s Folly you can sit outside, with a view of the ocean. If she accepts, keep the conversation light. Don’t scare her with your ardor. If she declines, let her make the next move. Dear Answer Lady My sister is having an affair with her son’s best friend and I am beside myself with worry that it will all come out. So far, they have been very careful and the young man
is in his 20s, not an adolescent, but if my nephew ever gets wind of this… I know him all too well. He will sever all relations with both of them. My worry is that we have a big family barbecue coming up Memorial Day weekend. All the parties concerned will be there. It makes so nervous. As far as I know, I am the only one other than the two of them who knows. I haven’t even told my husband. Is there anything I can do to help my sister see that she should end either the affair or her marriage? — Troubled Waters Dear Troubled There is nothing you can do except to be there for her and keep your own counsel. As to what to do during the family gathering — again, act as though nothing is wrong. Interfering is a road to disaster and risks estranging you from your sister and nephew. Certainly, tell your sister how you feel. After that, it’s up to her. Do yourself a favor and take your mind off all this. Go to Red Oak and treat yourself to something beautiful. Wear it to the barbecue as a reminder that your life is not in chaos and be happy for that.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
T
his week, I couldn’t find a movie worth seeing in theaters. Sure, there are all those blockbusters. But I don’t like to see those mainstream flicks. Besides, a lot of them are getting terrible reviews! Now I know what you’re saying. “But you’re a reviewer! You should be writing about those terrible movies.” Well just sit tight — I got two beauties for you! I turned to options on demand/DVD this week. One title, The Accountant with Ben Affleck, seemed at least slightly intriguing. While perusing the choices, there was another Affleck film called Live by Night. I have never been a big fan of “the Ben.” He always seems to just play himself, like so much Clint Eastwood. But what the heck. Welcome to the Affleck column. In The Accountant, Affleck plays a slightly disturbed numbers genius who also happens to be a vigilante killing machine. Call it Jason Bourne meets H&R Block. Wait, wait. Better still, call this one a mix of Die Hard with A Beautiful Mind. Okay, I could go on like this
Ben Affleck in The Accountant all day. Our main character uses accounting analytics and finance forensics to solve big-time mysteries. When he gets too close to discovering a major fraud case, his life becomes threatened. Well, thank goodness he’s not just an ordinary accountant. In actuality, he is a sort of a CPA superhero. Let the bloodbath begin. If you’re into good oldfashioned shoot-em-ups, this one is okay, I suppose. Nothing spectacular here, but it doesn’t necessarily drag.
Live by Night is a mobster movie. It has been criticized for not being a good enough mobster movie. But, honestly, I really don’t understand what makes a superior film in this genre, so what do I care? A lot of money was spent on sets to conjure up images of Florida and Boston in the 1930s. And I have to admit it all looked pretty good! So for a guy who doesn’t care how good his gangster movie is, this one wasn’t so bad. Was this flick riddled with clichés? Hello? Was Affleck’s portrayal one dimensional? C’mon… As an aside, for me underwhelming acting seems to run in the family. Ben’s brother, Casey? Kind of “meh.” His Oscar-winning portrayal of a glassy-eyed drunk in Manchester by the Sea was somewhat praiseworthy, but was it a stretch? So both of them together don’t make one decent actor. This here is a lot of words about a guy who I never really thought too much about before now. I don’t hate him — I just never considered him. Now I have — and I only confirmed why I have been so unimpressed.

Bird Droppings
E
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
very time someone mentions the electronic disconnect that seems to plague younger members of our society, I recall the awards brunch at the World Series of Birding and the manifest and unconditional exuberance expressed by the members of the many youth teams. Seeing their unvarnished embrace of birdwatching made me realize that, the pervasive use of handheld devices notwithstanding, not much has changed since my youth. I started watching birds at the age of seven precisely because it was more real and engaging than anything else in my life. School was a tedious exercise in institutionalized stupidity. Chores were onerous. TV was a mind suck. Birds were real. Vibrant. Alive. They gratified me with their colors and voices. Gave me not only grounding but more satisfaction than anyone else could squeeze out of the sterile environment that we call suburbia. It saved money on baseball cards, too; money I could now squander on bird seed. Birdwatching can be done by anyone, anywhere, any time. You don’t need adult
supervision. The exercise you get along with the vitamin D is just a bonus. With luck, you may grow up to be the next Roger Tory Peterson, who likewise got his start in birding at an early age. As the story goes, this mischievous, often bored boy growing up in New York decided to wander up a hill with an equally young and bored playmate. Finding a bird huddled at the base of a tree that appeared to be dead, Roger placed an exploring finger on the bird’s back and to their delight and surprise, it, being merely asleep,
burst to life in a blaze of yellow wing feathers. An image of a flicker, aka a large woodpecker, was carved on Roger’s tombstone, today. Like most young lads, Roger grew up, enjoyed a life gratified by the presence of birds and brought thousands to birdwatching through his writing and lecturing. I had my own flicker encounter, although not as dramatic or catalytic as that enjoyed by Roger. One summer afternoon, while birding in the woods behind my parent’s North Jersey home, I came upon two flickers busily gulping down carpenter ants swarming about the base of a tree. Intent as they were, the normally wary birds allowed me to approach to within a few feet. It remains one of my most treasured childhood memories, not just because of the intimacy but because it was mine alone. A private moment shared between living things not orchestrated by the adults that ran nearly every other aspect of my life. When people ask me: How I got into birding? I reply very proudly and honestly: “To get away from adults.”

HILLARY is a nice little girl who loves being pet. Although sometimes she likes her space and independence, she will let you know when she’s not craving attention. So if your looking for an adorable, sweet and independent lady, Hillary is the perfect companion for you. Stop by the shelter and say I’m with her!
MUFASA is a long hair Maine coon mix who got his name from the Lion King because of his regal stature. He also loves being pet. Who wouldn’t want to pet his beautiful mane? And if you’re familiar with the movie, then you know that hakuna matata means no worries! Adopt Mufasa today and enjoy a carefree life with this special kitty.
