Mystery Photo Contest Know your way around America’s Original Seaside Resort? Every week, we shoot a picture of an island landmark. If you think you know the answer, email info@exitzero.us and write MYSTERY PHOTO in the subject line. Don’t forget to tell us your name and address. Entries must be received by the Monday after publication. If you don’t like emailing, don’t snail mail — it won’t get here in time. Instead, call 609-770-8479. The first name picked from the correct entries wins a 2017 Discount Deck. The answer and winner is posted on our Facebook page every Friday.

BILL SCHEMEL MT EPHRAIM, NJ

How long have you been coming here? Over 50 years, when our three daughters, Kathy, Susan and Dawne were growing up and our seven grandchildren. I also worked on building the Cape May ferry terminal. Who are you normally with? My wife Peggy and our children and friends. But not all at one time. Favorite thing about Cape May? We started staying at Surf City, then Brigantine, Ocean City and finally Cape May. The Cape May area was and is the best. There is fishing, crabbing, or a trip on the whale watcher. Also, the Washington Street Mall, the lighthouse, the concrete ship, the beaches, to mention a few. Least favorite thing? The parking has a lot to be desired. Favorite restaurants? The Lobster House, Harpoons On The Bay, 5 West Pub, Washington Inn, Rio Station, Harbor View. Exit Zero Cookhouse is on my list to try. Favorite places to stay? Our Park Model Trailer at Seashore Campsites or my daughter Sue and her husband Mike’s new home on Beach Drive in North Cape May. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? Although I am not a biker a sign or two when entering Cape May to make motorist’s aware of the many bikers that use the streets and bike paths. It would also be nice to do away with beach fees.

NAUTI WORD OF THE WEEK

rol. locks

These are the spaces cut into the vessel or small clasps raised up from the side of smaller boats that are used to rest oars when the boat is under paddle.

Mike DeMusz Painting Of The Week

BOOK OF THE WEEK We confer with Cape Atlantic Book Company to bring you a page turner... THIS FIGHT IS OUR FIGHT by Senator Elizabeth Warren. The fiery US Senator and bestselling author from Massachusetts offers a passionate, inspiring book about why our middle class is under siege and how we can win the fight to save it. Elizabeth Warren has had enough of phony promises and a government that no longer serves its people — she won’t sit down, she won’t be silenced and she will fight back.

Our Staff Artist Mike DeMusz is creating a painting every week. Here he is at work on the latest. To see the completed work, check out the Exit Zero Facebook page. Better still, visit the Exit Zero Store at 109 Sunset Boulevard, across from the gas station. Even if this particular work is already sold, we have the whole Mike DeMusz inventory of prints here, along with other great Cape May artwork. You can call the store at 609-770-8479. We are open every single day from 10-5 (9-9 in the summer). Or buy online at ezstore.us.

Ramblings From The Editor

I

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

nterested in learning more about the plans to improve biking routes on the island? If so (and why wouldn’t you be — I think it’s a top priority), you should get yourself along to Cape May City Hall this Saturday (June 3). An open house is being held from 11-1, part of a process that involves New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT), who will be supplying a grant for a new initiative called BikeWalk Cape May, which seeks to improve mobility and safety for bike riders and pedestrians. As of now, the program only involves Cape May and Cape May Point. Why? Well, I could start referencing the previous mayor of Cape May, who had a tendency to seek absolute power over everything, while encouraging conflict and divisiveness all around him. But I think I’ve done enough of that already. Instead, I will say that, with the new mayor, Chuck Lear, encouraging dialogue and participation all around, I’m sure West Cape May will be involved as, of course, it should be. In fact, if you live, or vacation, in West

Cape May, get along to City Hall and let them know you’re not being represented! If you go to the city’s website (capemaycity.com), you’ll see the BikeWalk Cape May document on the home page — flick through it and you’ll get the general idea. At the event on Saturday, you’ll be able to stop by to review the study’s findings, maps, and graphics. Residents (and visitors) will also have the opportunity to ask questions of the consultant team and comment on the study findings.

I love riding my bike around the island — in the summer, it beats the hell out of driving, and is usually quicker, too. But have you noticed just how badly cut up our streets are? It feels like the contractors employed by South Jersey Gas, in particular, did a number on our streets. I’m no expert in the laying of asphalt, but is there a reason why repaired spots are about six inches higher than the rest of the road, and a totally different color and material (it seems)? It looks terrible and it rides pretty bad, too. A few weeks ago, I spoke to the county engineer, Dale Foster, who acknowledged that some of this island’s roads had suffered at the hands of contractors. There is a person employed part-time by the county to ensure that contractors are held responsible for shoddy repairs. Methinks that person better get down here pretty quick to see the mess that’s been left. Speaking of summer, which I was earlier... where did it go? This is Scottish weather, and I don’t like it one little bit. Until next week...

Dish Of The Week It’s the Strawberry Issue, so it’s time to honor a fruit that was first eaten on this soil by the Native Americans and which is considered an aphrodisiac by the French. Fun fact: It’s the only fruit that has its seeds on the outside. Fun Fact #2: California produces about 80% of America’s strawberries. So how best to enjoy a berrylicious treat? Berry up to Uncle Bill’s Pancake House and order a plate of strawberry pancakes — three large pancakes topped with whipped cream. Yes, cream is bad for you, so it’s a good thing strawberries help reduce the risk of heart disease. Oh, and get yourself to the Strawberry Festival at Wilbraham Park this Saturday!

Let me take you down cause I’m going to... no, not to strawberry fields but to Harry’s Ocean Bar and Grille at the Montreal Beach Resort. Why? To sit outside on their rooftop deck and sip on a refreshing strawberry mojito, while enjoying Atlantic-licious views of the ocean. Harry’s fruity cocktail consists of Calico Jack light rum, muddled mint, lime, simple syrup, club soda and strawberry purée. So if you’re not berried out after the West Cape May Strawberry Festival (there’s live music all day, as well as fruity treats and lots of vendors) this Saturday then it’s the perfect end to a sweet day. As John Lennon would (never) say, strawberry mojitos forever!

Must-Have Of The Week

Searching our favorite places in Cape May for those goodies you need to own now! We went in search of some strawberry-appropriate products and found the answer from Cape May Peanut Butter Company on Carpenters Lane The Items: Jellies and jams. The Appeal: The West Cape May Strawberry Festival is on Saturday — to get into the sweet spirit, we thought a little jar of goodness is just what you need. Whether it’s spread on a cracker with cheese or sandwiched between two pieces of bread with some peanut butter, these strawberry jellies are definitely jammin’. The Price: $7.95-$8.25.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

I

once had a marvelous straw beret. It did not end well but it was, for a short while, one of Cape May’s most fashionforward moments. It was an evolution of my previous favorite hat, the beret, which I had grown uneasy about due to its popularity by those awful Beat bores, not to mention its adoption by that pasty mime atrocity, Marcel Marceau (did you know mimes are illegal in Cape May? Those, chimpanzees and clowns — the backbone of the less classy circuses — are all forbidden in city limits, on pain of a thrashing. On the other hand, elephants that walk in a line holding the tail of the one in front in their trunks, and dancing bears, are positively welcomed. Note: Bears that actually dance for fun are welcome, not those tortured to make them stand on their peculiarly short legs. Anyone coming to our city with that kind of nonsense will find themselves in a basket and an integral part of our Wicker Man tribute festival). So, I asked one of my staff to make a selection of berets from local materials. The

pop-up shop this summer only shoes

+ bags + accessories

saltwater taffy one smelled wonderful, but was not ideal when it melted in the heat. And the pancake one from Uncle Bill’s was fine for shade, but tended to have the wearer chased by flocks of feral gulls. So when I was handed a finely crafted straw beret, I was delighted, and set off for my morning constitutional with a spring in my step. I admit that, over the course of the morning, it seemed to grow heavy, but assumed that was just the humid air soaking the straw. Imagine my surprise, upon returning to The D’Catur Mansion, when

the household staff fled, shrieking, as I bent to have them remove my hat (of course a gentleman has a person to remove his hat! And his shoes, jacket and, when fatigued, his underpants). I was nonplussed, until I caught sight of my shadow, and saw that the hat was around 10 times its original size, and had wings. Well, I set it down carefully, and backed off, for a bald eagle had nested on the beret, and added to its superstructure with an assortment of foliage, twigs, rags and dead rabbits. Also, a poor quality wig and a winning lottery ticket. Out of respect, we did not disturb the nest until after the chicks had hatched, and we fed them little pieces of Shoebie. Of course, there was an upside, as we had, here in Cape May, invited a sweet red fruit that we could not find a name for, and after much humming and hawing, we named the strawberet. The correct spelling was corrupted later, of course, as the fruit became a global sensation, but you should feel proud that it was invented and named here in our fine city.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, West Cape May Strawberry Festival

f ever a fruit deserved a festival, it’s the strawberry, and West Cape May Strawberry Festival obliges on June 3. The perfect fruit at the perfect time, the strawberry invites us to enjoy the last weeks of spring while it beckons summer. It’s hardy enough for some manhandling, so you can make it both decoration and dessert, but the strawberry is not afraid to show its delicacy — it even wears its seeds on the outside. The fruit, almost heart shaped, is an ancient symbol of love, like its cousin, the rose. Most cultures have a strawberry legend. Native Americans say it’s a special “gift of creation” for women and children. Strawberry leaves were said to relieve the pains of childbirth. Cherokees claim that strawberries were sent to earth to heal a marital spat between First Woman and First Man. Greeks say strawberries sprang from the tears of Venus, as she cried for her lost Adonis. A Norse legend holds that strawberries shelter the spirits of children, holding them safe until Frigga, Odin’s wife, can escort them to heaven. In France, a breakfast of

John Cooke

strawberry soup supposedly helped newlyweds on their way to a sweet life — they do fight bad breath, which increases the chance of marital bliss. Bavarians hung strawberries from the horns of their cattle to repay local sprites for an abundance of milk. For Victorians, the strawberry represented modesty, because the berries hide under the leaves; a gift of strawberries suggested sweetness and perfection. At Wimbledon, strawberries and cream were served from the first tournament in 1877, mostly because they were in season, but also because they carried a hint

of rustic revelry to the upper classes — cream was regarded as peasant food before the 19th century. Today, strawberries and cream are served for tradition, and because they evoke an afternoon in an English garden. All strawberries served at Wimbledon are grown in England, harvested in Kent in the wee hours of the morning, shipped to the tennis venue, cleaned, hulled and served the same day. The West Cape May Strawberry Festival celebrates strawberries in all forms, edible and non-edible. Some are served simple and farm fresh, others are transformed into smoothies or shortcake, covered in chocolate or rendered into strawberry ketchup for your burger. Strawberry-themed art, decorations, T-shirts, jewelry and face painting are available. A strawberry king and queen will be crowned, and there will be music, crafts, and a chance to mingle with your summer neighbors. Sponsored by the West Cape May Business Association, the Strawberry Festival runs from 9-5. The rain date is June 4. Ride your bike or walk — parking will be a challenge.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My husband and I have a feud going about the dishwasher. I love the fact that he wants to be helpful and takes charge of loading the dishwasher. BUT, he loads it in such a way that the dishes either chip or that half the dishes go unwashed. I have a very efficient way of doing this and I want him to follow my lead. He’s threatened to never help again “if this is your attitude.” I don’t want it to go to divorce court. I just want my dishes cleaned. — Dishwasher Challenge Dear Challenge Adopt the same compromise the Answer Lady employs. He loads the dishwasher. The Answer Lady thanks him and then when he leaves the room, happy and feeling helpful, reloads the dishwasher to her satisfaction.

Wise answers to perplexing questions

The trick is to try and unload the dishwasher before he notices. However, he probably would not notice any difference. It is passive aggressive but well worth it to avoid the taxing, divorce court-resentment scenario. And to celebrate your newfound peace, stop at Sunset Liquors and celebrate with a bottle of champagne and a romantic evening watching the sunset at The Cove. When he asks why the celebration — just tell him cause you like him. Dear Answer Lady I have been friends with a certain per-

son, let’s call her Jan, for over a decade. We went everywhere together, often to New York to see a play or a concert. We usually celebrated the holidays together as well. Sometimes she hosted, sometimes I did. Then one day, for no reason that I can think, she stopped talking to me. I have tried many times to discover what I have done but to no avail. Her husband refuses to talk about it, although he is still quite friendly to me when we run into other. I hate this and want to at least know what sin I have committed to be punished in this fashion. It’s been a year now. — Dissed. Dear Dissed Certainly perplexing and hurtful, but at this point you need to be philosophical and write it off as a loss. Be thankful. How good a friend could she have been to throw away a friendship so cavalierly? Soothe your soul with a visit to Bath Time. Indulge yourself with some nice bath products and go home and take a nice luxurious bath and focus on all the good relationships still alive and well in your life.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

R

ichard Gere. Okay I lost some of you right on that first line, didn’t I? Who’s left? Suffice to say you’ve not seen Richard Gere like this. At 67 years old, this guy is still, for some admirers, a dreamboat. Imagine him being annoying instead. Oh no, did I lose everyone else who hung in there after my opener? Gere plays the lead bug job in Norman. Think of it like Being There (1979) without the hapless main character, Chance (by the way, not nearly as endearing as Peter Sellers, who played the lead). Still, there is something about Norman that is not completely irritating. Norman is a business consultant. In what area? That’s not really clear. He introduces people. He can “get you in” to see a guy. He’s... annoying like that. When he tries to make a connection with an assistant minister of Israel, played by Lior Ashkenazi, he actually gets somewhere. How does he do this? He buys him a super-expensive pair of shoes.

Richard Gere is deliberately annoying in Norman All of this provides an uncomfortable demonstration of the length Norman will go to make a “deal” for a business we don’t really know much about. But his kindness pays off as this obscure assistant minister eventually makes his way to become the prime minister of Israel. What luck for Norman! And more importantly, the new leader remembers Norman’s kindness and gives him prominence through the connection. Where the film goes from here is pulled off very well. Not exactly a favorite film for

me or even one that is completely memorable. Still, this was a departure for Gere for sure, and a good one at that. It’s a predictable film and in places you wonder about the far stretches it takes — but you’ve suspended disbelief enough to avoid being jarred. It never gets too heady, and it could have easily gone that way. There are a lot of lesser-known stars, not the least of whom is Hank Azaria of The Simpsons television fame. Joseph Cedar is the writer/director who has a short but wellreceived filmography. His last film was in 2011 with the moderately successful Footnote. So you may be annoyed by Gere in this film — but that’s the point. Not exactly a must-see but not a skip-over either. Save the date! Coming up from the Cape May Film Society, a free screening of Zootopia, the Academy Award winning animated film from Disney. If you read this column, you know how much I raved about this movie. Join the fun Saturday, June 17, 6:30pm, at Cape May Lutheran Church, 509 Pittsburgh Avenue. More about this soon.

Bird Droppings

M

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

y ambition was to head on over to Heislerville and catch the world-class concentration of migrating shorebirds. They’ll be gone in a week, heading for Arctic breeding grounds. But my morning was hijacked by another spectacle. The symphony of sound that erupts in my backyard on a daily basis. No two mornings are alike and the chorus changes minute to minute as one vocalist joins in and another elects to sit it out. Always to be counted upon is the caroling din of American robin. It and the staccato whistle of cardinal: woit, woit, woit, woit, woit, tew, tew, tew tew, tew tew, tew tew tew are perennials. So too is the hurried warble of house finch. Then things get interesting as first one, then another, celebrity vocalist chimes in. One of the most comical vocalists is great-crested flycatcher, whose raucous cacophony is mood elevating. A cavity nesting species, great-cresteds like flycatchers all over the world are early risers. High overhead, the morning flight of

laughing gulls pass judgement upon the human preoccupation with ascribing meaning to everyday phenomena by, of course, laughing. No morning chorus is complete without the piping whistle of osprey, and this morning was no exception. The mellow, evenly spaced notes become shrill and strident when an eagle appears. What made this morning chorus particularly rich was the moisture-laden air and windless conditions. Sound travels better in

humid air. This is probably why I was able to hear the etherial sigh of cedar waxwings, a bird whose high-pitched call is typically beyond the reach of my aging ears. These rakishly crested, yellow-trimmed, taffy-colored birds are a favorite of mine. Only once have the birds graced our yard with a nest. Maybe this year we will be so blessed again. The native trees in our yard, all volunteers, are festooned with caterpillars, a feast of protein for growing nestlings who will switch over to a diet of berries when fully grown. Suddenly the chorus is drowned out by the brass section as a host of blue jays find something upon which to vent their ire. My guess is the neighborhood Cooper’s hawk is on the prowl. Oh, well, hawks are just one more element in a natural mosaic that is our town — one rich in mature native trees, shrubs and gardens. Wildlife is quick to integrate our human environment when given half a chance and why would a landowner prefer sterile environment over a dynamic, living landscape that maintains itself.

DEZZY is an American Staffordshire mix who was surrendered into the shelter because his family was moving and could not take him with them. He is a sweet, social, medium sized boy who is young, just one year old! In his previous home Dezzy lived with children under the age of 10. So if you’re looking for the perfect pup, adopt today!

WONKA is a labrador retriever and American Staffordshire terrier mix who was named Wonka after his chocolate coat. He came into the shelter as a stray and sadly noone has come looking for him. Wonka would be best as the only pet in the household. If you’re looking for something sweet, adopt Wonka today!

GATSBY is a pit bull terrier mix who came in as a stray. Great Gatsby he is but great luck he has not because he ended up here! Gatsby has already learned lots of new and useful behaviors that will make him the most mannerly boy when he finds a new home. Stop by the shelter today. Gatsby will be eagerly awaiting your arrival!

AJAX is an orange, short-haired kitty who is looking for his first home. He loves playing with the other cats in the shelter and pouncing on his jingly toy. Like most previously feral cats, Ajax is still a bit weary being picked up. But with some trust and time, Ajax has the heart and what it takes to become the perfect pet. Adopt Ajax today!

HILLARY is a nice little girl who loves being pet. Although sometimes she likes her space and independence, she will let you know when she’s not craving attention. So if your looking for an adorable, sweet and independent lady, Hillary is the perfect companion for you. Stop by the shelter and say I’m with her!

MUFASA is a long hair Maine coon mix who got his name from the Lion King because of his regal stature. He also loves being pet. Who wouldn’t want to pet his beautiful mane? And if you’re familiar with the movie, then you know that hakuna matata means no worries! Adopt Mufasa today and enjoy a carefree life with this special kitty.
