LEE KRUMENACKER DOYLESTOWN, PA
How long have you been coming here? Every summer since 1943. My family’s home has been on First Avenue since about 1918. Who are you normally with?. Always with family and friends. We are fortunate to have a house very close to the beach. My four sons and 12 grandchildren have been here every summer of their lives. Favorite thing about Cape May? The history, the beautiful homes, restaurants and shops... so much more than a beach town, the sunset over the lighthouse, the farm markets, West Side Market and all the wonderfully friendly people. Cape May was so very different in the 50s and 60s! There were fewer parking meters, lots of vacant lots and very few people. First Avenue was a street of pebbles paved in concrete. Least favorite thing? The parking situation is problematic. It’s easier to walk or bike to get around. Favorite restaurants? Washington Inn, Union Park, Lucky Bones, and, of course, Exit Zero Cookhouse. Love the Indian influence. Favorite places to stay? My home on First Avenue — heaven’s a little closer in a house by the sea. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? Stop building huge hotels and condos that attract hordes of people that the town can not accommodate.
NAUTI WORD OF THE WEEK
turt. ling
In dinghy sailing especially (but can include other boats), a boat is said to be turtling or to turn turtle when the boat is fully inverted with the mast pointing down to the lake bottom or seabed.
Mike DeMusz Painting Of The Week
BOOK OF THE WEEK We confer with Cape Atlantic Book Company to bring you a page turner... THE FROZEN HOURS by Jeff Shaara. The master of military historical fiction turns to the Korean War. The story of Americans and Chinese who squared off in one of the deadliest campaigns of combat; the Battle of Chosin Reservoir. June - November 1950, after being assured by General Douglas MacArthur they would be home by Christmas, American forces fight for their lives in the most brutal weather conditions imaginable against an enemy that outnumbers them six to one.
Our Staff Artist Mike DeMusz is creating a painting every week. Here he is at work on the latest. To see the completed work, check out the Exit Zero Facebook page. Better still, visit the Exit Zero Store at 109 Sunset Boulevard, across from the gas station. Even if this particular work is already sold, we have the whole Mike DeMusz inventory of prints here, along with other great Cape May artwork. You can call the store at 609-770-8479. We are open every single day from 10-5 (9-9 in the summer). Or buy online at ezstore.us.

Ramblings From The Editor
B
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
reakfast in the old Stimpson kitchen last Sunday was a little different than usual. Normally, the only noises I hear while noshing on my daily dose of avocado and eggs are the calls of cardinals and robins and the occasional car (okay, and maybe my mutts barking at the neighbor’s dog through the fence). But for a couple hours on Sunday morning, all I could hear was the distinctive hum carbon road wheels make when bikes are coasting on asphalt. The reason? My street was included in the route for Escape the Cape, an event which in only four years has become one of the top five “bucket list” races in the world, according to Triathlon Business International. Escape the Cape starts off with a 12-foot leap off the ferry. From experience, I know that 12 feet, when you are staring into the wilds of the ocean (or bay), feels like, oh, 120 feet. You’d have to Taser me to get me to leap off the boat, assuming I was crazy enough to get up there in the first place. After that, there’s a one-mile swim, a
23-mile bike race and a five-mile run. Or, if you’re a total wuss, you can choose the easy option — a third-of-a-mile swim, 12-mile bike and 5k run. Peanuts, eh? Around 1700 people took part on Sunday — and, according to my observations (about 45 minutes of staring out the window, while nursing a cup of lemon tea), there’s a lot of different shapes and sizes on display, which was great to see. Me? I could handle a long bike ride and a 5k run without any issues — but you’re not getting me anywhere near the
water. Speaking of... I heard one local business owner, who shall remain nameless, did only the bike ride and gave the impression he had completed the whole thing. Surely not! Escape the Cape is a wonderful addition to the local calendar and long may it thrive, but could the organizers and local authorities do a better job of informing certain residents that they’re going to be stuck in their home till around 11am? Absolutely. I saw a large digital sign in North Cape May when I drove up there on Sunday night, but I didn’t see any notices at all on the island. I know of one coast guard officer who had to persuade police to allow him to get in his car and go to the base on Sunday morning — and he was in uniform. So I think it’s safe to assume that a lot of people were not aware of the impact the race was going to have. Next year, there should be some serious digital signage in and around the island — and, hey, a couple full-page ads in Exit Zero in the leadup wouldn’t hurt. I think they could find a space in their budget. Enjoy the week...

Dish Of The Week Now, if you believe in karma and refuse to eat an animal that could easily swallow you whole, then by all means, don’t take our advice and order up another one of 410 Bank Street’s delicious appetizers. But if you’re willing to take the plunge and swim with the fishes, then their smoked mako shark medallions that are pan-seared with a honey, ginger and sesame glaze are a killer choice. And statistically speaking, the odds of getting attacked by a shark are 1 in 3,748,067. You have better odds of getting struck by lighting on your way to the restaurant. So don’t be scared to take a bite!

Fabulous Food & Cool Cocktails in a Casual Pub Atmosphere!
Flint & Steel, Napa Valley Sauvignon Blanc
Perfect for summer drinking, this beer has a light body, an expressive Belgian yeast presence and an enticing aroma. Thanks to two-pounds-per-barrel dry hopping regime comprised of Nelson Sauvin, Amarillo and Wakatu, it’s worth geeking out over!
Crisp acidity and bright fruit flavors are abundant in this beauty. With flavors of grapefruit and honeysuckle this wine over delivers for the price. Cheers!
$14.99 from Collier’s Liquor Store 202 Jackson Street.
This week’s drink of the week was inspired by the greatest movie of all time, or at least that’s what EZ editor Jack Wright would say. The spine-chilling first scene of Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws” left people all over the world terrified to step foot back into the deep blue. The obvious outcome: intoxicated, skinny-dipping teenagers will always lead to death by shark. They had it coming to them. But the poor dog later on? C’mon Spielberg. So, if you’re still mourning the loss of the pup Pippin then drown your sorrows at Cabanas with a Lost Bikini cocktail, which is made with Pusser’s rum, galliano, amaretto, lime and orange juice. And don’t miss the showing of “Jaws” on the beach in August!

The Old Fogey
W
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
e take sharks very seriously in this city. I myself, as Cape May’s official Shark Ranger, spend many hours a day perched on the Mansion’s tallest tower with my binoculars and a bullhorn. Back in the day, Ernie Hemingway was up there, too, with his elephant gun and a bottle of single malt. My, the times we had: toasting, large caliber gunfire, eruptions of sand and water, followed by a nice bowl of shark’s fin soup. That was before we knew the truth about sharks, mind you, back when we thought them merciless killers, who’d eat you as soon as look at you. Actually. I still think that, but over the decades I have grown fonder of sharks and less keen on humans, and I will take the homicidal fish over a shoebie any day. In fact I will feed a shoebie to a shark with only a little provocation. Anyways, as soon as I spot a shark (by “shark” I mean any disturbance in the water that I distrust: this often turns out to be floating debris, or a small herring, and fairly regularly a wave) I turn the bullhorn setting to “panic mode” and roar “SHAAAAARK! Get
out of the water! Except you! Yes you, the big lad at the back! You stay where you are and splash a load!” Obviously, I pick one hapless swimmer just as a decoy in CASE there happens to be a shark, so everyone else can escape. Thus far, I have gone through this routine exactly 3,086 times, and spotted an actual shark 450 of those. I should be clear here that it is usually Mary Lee, our semi-tame great white, who we have on contract thru summer, to pass by once every so often, and make sure we are on the televisual news. Mary Lee is not actually very
fond of eating people, other than the very occasional one as a favor to me. I think that tax fella was the last one, him and his “I cannot help but notice that Cape May has not contributed to federal funds for 140 years” nonsense. I do recall the time we had a man-eating sheep: oh the terror. It had escaped from a government laboratory, and was a ferocious killer. I had spotted it stalking people in the shallows, but when I shouted “Sheep! Sheep!” through my bullhorn, people just laughed. Well, they didn’t laugh when it dragged a whole family away with a gleeful “baaa!” I was called in to hunt it… I remember interrupting their chatter by wetting my fingers and running them down a chalkboard (I considered using my fingernails but I hate the sound that makes. We fingers make a far funny “praaaap” noise, not unlike a pump) and declaring “you’re gonna need a bigger barbecue!” Anyways, what with the oceans rising and all, we are about to declare Cape May a shark reserve, and to change the law so that chondrichthyes can become mayor. People may not notice a difference.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the joy of NOT cooking
classic American cookbook, The Joy of Cooking was first published in 1931. A widow named Irma Rombauer, an amateur home cook, wrote the book in the encouraging style an experienced friend might use to teach a beginner. Her daughter Marion drew the pictures, and Rombauer sold the book out of her home. The first edition reflects its time. People used egg beaters instead of electric mixers, sieves instead of food processors and ice boxes instead of refrigerators. Zucchini, bagels and yogurt were exotic. Sliced bread had only been around for three years, and sticks of butter were yet to come. Rombauer advocated cooking that embraced miraculous inventions like canned soups and “frosted” vegetables. In 1943, she updated the work for the World War II cook taking up “our mighty weapon, the cooking spoon.” With timesaving tips and alternatives to rationed food, Rombauer introduced us to the pressure cooker and the soybean, and encouraged the use of home-
Michael Clark
grown spices to season wartime plates. The 1963 edition, published a year after Rombauer’s death with modern input from her daughter, became America’s kitchen bible. Yet, as much fun as it is to make your own peanut butter or stuff your own grape leaves, there is also joy in letting someone else do it. If you are reading this in Cape May, congratulate yourself on your good timing. You have landed in the middle of Restaurant Week, that joyous week when Cape May’s restaurants are even more inviting. Restaurant Week offers fixed-price dining from dozens of restaurants, with three-
course dinners available for $25 and $35, not including beverage, tax and gratuity. Two-course lunch menus, available at some establishments, are $15 and offer either an appetizer and entree, or an entree and dessert. Beverages, gratuity, and tax are not included. Visit cmrestaurantweek.com for more information. Restaurant Week is a great chance to get adventurous. It’s easier to try something exotic when you’re getting a great deal. Give vegan sushi, black spaghetti or swordfish tacos a try. Introduce a classic to a seafoodshy friend — clam chowder, crab cakes or lobster bisque. Order a dish you love to cook and take inspiration from the chef’s technique. Get dessert at lunchtime on a Thursday. If you can’t get enough of restaurant week, come back in November for Cape May Restaurant Weekend, a scaled-down version of the June event. Participating restaurants will offer you an appetizer, entrée, and dessert for $35 per person. As with restaurant week, no tickets are required.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My wife and I are having a disagreement about our son. He is 17 and I feel he needs to get a job this summer. My wife agrees but expects me to ask our friends, many of whom own businesses, if they would hire him. I feel very strongly that: A. He should find his own job; and B. This is taking unfair advantage of a friendship. She maintains that this is exactly what happens in the business world all the time and why not help him out. I maintain it is a character issue. — Anti-Enabler Dear Anti-Enabler The Answer Lady agrees with you. This is right up there with writing your child’s college application essay. Networking works fine when the stakes are higher and all other things are equal, but at this stage your son
Wise answers to perplexing questions
needs the humbling experience of finding a job he might like; of applying for that job on his own and of accepting the possible rejection that might take place for whatever reason, be it lack of experience or a poor job interview. On the positive side, remind him of how much satisfaction there will be in finding the right job and successfully interviewing for that position. Have a chat with him over lunch at Lucky Bones and coach him on interviewing and ask him what he would like to do. It will be a positive for all of you.
Dear Answer Lady Our Cairn terrier is a year old. My husband and I are not in agreement over whether to leash Bingo when company comes or to let him mingle with the guests. Having him run wild puts me on edge. It is true that he settles down once the initial outbursts are over but not everyone is a dog person and he tends to knock over wine glasses et al. On the other hand he barks incessantly when we contain him and that is equally off-putting. What do you suggest? — Excitable Pooch Owner Dear Excitable For special occasions you might want to call the Doggie Nanny to come in and contain Bingo while the party is going on. Meanwhile your daily training will come into play as you socialize him, beginning with a few dogfriendly friends who will help. Be sure to have some treats on hand to reward him for good behavior. The Answer Lady found that if she went to West Side Market or Gaiss’ and got a big bone, that alone was enough to keep her playful pooch occupied while guests mingled. And bonus — a nap would soon follow.

“Billy Bishop Goes to War” at Cape May Stage... review by Veronica Scutaro
he season’s opener at Cape May Stage, Billy Bishop Goes to War, is much more than the story on the surface. It is much deeper than the story of daring of the great World War I flying ace. The story of Billy Bishop is fairly wellknown: his accomplishments as an aviator during the embryonic phases of flight, his many medals, his role as Number One. But the acting of J. Max Baker as Billy and the pulse of Sam Saint Ours as the piano player take us to a different dimension. Baker takes us back to 1917 in a very real sense. We see him go from a patriotic Colonial, a boy really, from Canada, to the number one flying ace of the War to End All Wars, to a man speaking to the next generation, mature, worldly but still in love with freedom and his country. Along this journey, as I watched this performance, words kept rising to the surface: fear, mud, ugliness, loneliness, revulsion, sentiment, adrenaline, numbness and finally hate. Billy Bishop begins with a young Canadian whose main ambition is to find ways
to avoid work and optimize fun. As the war starts and Canada is called upon, Billy finds himself faced with the prospect of fighting in a war. As many young people do, he romanticizes what this means: traveling the world to kill his enemy. When he faces the reality of sleeping in six inches of water in a trench, surrounded by the bodies of dead comrades and allies, he changes. He focuses on killing his enemy in a very personal way. Fellow pilots shoot at planes to disable them — Billy finds the enemy pilots and kills them. He has
evolved (devolved?) into a killer. Only after a free-fall encounter does he see those men as people. Saint Ours, the piano player, skillfully advances the plot through music. Sometimes in the background setting the mood, sometimes prominently up front. When Baker and Saint Ours sing together, the wonderful acoustics of this performance space are chilling. During the course of the performance, Baker plays 14 characters with great creativity and fun. He speaks every role from English royalty (female) to cavalrymen to officers, to a butler to a cabaret singer. His portrayals are humorous and hit the spot to relieve the dramatic tension in the audience. The history of Billy Bishop is important not only as we commemorate the 100th anniversary of this terrible war, but as we face our futures as both a nation and as part of a global community of humanity. Experience this vortex of changing colors of emotion and superimpose those colors over today. They may just fit.

Bird Droppings
M
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
y new favorite bird is also an old favorite of mine, gray catbird. This dapper, slate-colored mimid is closely related to brown thrasher and northern mockingbird, sharing with these species a wide vocal array. Being able to operate both sides of its voice box independently, one bird can sing with two voices simultaneously. So if a catbird ever elects to run for the office of president, I’d say he’s a natural. Why my newly kindled interest in this bird of my youth? Two pairs of catbirds are trying to nest in our backyard which results in a great deal of posturing, tail chases and vocal dueling. The birds get their name from their mewing call that recalls, somewhat, a cat. They are a common breeder in tickets but find a wellvegetated suburban yard much to their liking. The rose bush in our yard has proven to be a favored nest site and seems to be the focus of the dueling pair’s ire. Catbird’s loose stick nests are situated less than six feet high, which, 60 years ago, put them well within the range of my inquisi-
tive seven-year old hands. My nest-finding technique was hit or miss. Finding a bush that seemed the right height and density, I’d part the foliage and press my face into the shrub’s interior. Being eyeball to eyeball with an adult catbird is exciting enough but the real prize was the opportunity to savor the clutch of three to four eggs, so deep blue they border on black. Nesting so close to the ground means that catbird eggs are frequently eaten by snakes and parasitized by brown-headed cowbirds whose pale, brown flecked eggs are also larger.
Happily catbirds are one of the few species that can recognize the cowbird’s egg and eject them. Less observant species raise the cowbird chick as their own, often at the expense of meeting the nutritional needs of their own young. Catbirds commonly attempt multiple broods during a nesting season so are able to accommodate one or more nest failures. Male birds defend the area just around the nest from rivals, accounting for the presence of two pairs in our small yard. Rival nests may be less than twenty yards apart. If both pairs succeed in nesting, it’s going to be a bad year to be an insect or a spider in our yard. With both parents foraging and bringing food to nestlings an average eight times per hour, it amounts to a great deal of earthfriendly insect control. There must be plenty of insects to go around or else two pairs of catbirds wouldn’t be thinking about setting up shop. Our cardinal pair, too, seems partial to our insect abundance. They’ve elected to nest in the forsythia this year and as year-round residents they had first choice.
