How long have you been coming here? In 1989, I gave my wife Andrea a birthday weekend at the Summer Cottage Inn and we have vacationed around Cape May with our kids ever since. Who are you normally with? My wife, daughter Katie from Chicago and our son Steve and his wife Katie from Philadelphia, who got engaged on Lehigh Beach at The Point in 2015! Favorite thing about Cape May? Cape May Point’s quiet beaches, diverse birdlife, beautiful nature trails and friendly community, especially the annual two and five mile run every June to benefit the volunteer fire company. Least favorite thing? People who leave litter around town and those who talk and text during the nightly American flag ceremony at Sunset Beach. Favorite restaurants? When not sampling local libations at Cape May Brewery, we enjoy brunch at Mad Batter, lunch at Westside Market, dinner at George’s, H&H Seafood and the Lobster House deck and late-night nachos at Ugly Mug. Favorite places to stay? Our beach house. But when the kids were young, the Jetty Motel was our seaside “stay and play” Later, we found many nice weekly rental houses with the realty groups listed in Exit Zero. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? To have Sunday mass offered year round at lovely St. Agnes Church in the Point.

Mike DeMusz Painting Of The Week
BOOK OF THE WEEK We confer with Cape Atlantic Book Company to bring you a page turner... this week, it’s BEFORE THE FALLS by Noah Hawley. Just released in paperback, this book tells the story of two survivors of a plane crash off the coast of Martha’s Vineyard — a down-on-his-luck painter and a four-year-old boy — make it back to shore only to face an ensuing storm of media outrage, accusations and entitlement to the “story” which quickly threatens to spiral out of control.
Our Staff Artist Mike DeMusz is creating a painting every week. Here he is at work on the latest. To see the completed work, check out the Exit Zero Facebook page. Better still, visit the Exit Zero Store at 109 Sunset Boulevard, across from the gas station. Even if this particular work is already sold, we have the whole Mike DeMusz inventory of prints here, along with other great Cape May artwork. You can call the store at 609-770-8479. We are open every single day from 10-6 (9-9 weekends). Or buy online at ezstore.us.

Ramblings From The Editor
T
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
hroughout the 14 years I’ve been writing this column, I’ve paid tribute to some local legends who’ve passed on — far too many of them were taken too early, but life, as we know, is rarely predictable. This week, I am going to pay tribute not to a human but to a furry little creature called April, who has been at my side for the last 13 years but who is with me no longer. If you’re one of those people who think dogs — or animals in general — deserve to be treated with less love and respect than humans, you can stop reading. Last time I checked, animals don’t get involved with destroying the planet’s natural resources or killing each other for reasons other than a need to survive (I realize there are exceptions — let’s face it, cats can be cruel). As for dogs, you don’t need me to tell you how remarkable they are. Their capacity to love unconditionally has been well documented over the centuries by much better ramblers than I — “The dog is a gentleman; I hope to go to his heaven, not man’s,”
wrote Mark Twain. And a legion of Facebook videos has only underlined dogs’ all-around awesomeness. My little April was an athlete with the face and soul of a teddy bear (I’m overlooking the moments when she’d snap at our daffy shepherd mix, Rudytoo) and an unquenchable spirit. Over the past year, she’s dealt with losing an eye and having her body under attack from cancer — a tumor covered a large part of her jaw, but didn’t stop her catching tennis
balls (which often came back to me spotted with blood). Up until her last 48 hours she swam at Higbee Beach and ran in a relentless chase for balls that has been a lifelong pursuit. And, even when the cancer finally overran her, she would wag her tail and paw me if I dared to stop stroking her ear for more than a few seconds. I chose to put April to sleep last Friday because I didn’t want her to suffer any more. It wasn’t one of my easiest decisions, though it helps when you have someone in your life like Dr Bob Moffatt, who’s everything a small-town vet should be. When you visit his practice, it’s obvious that humanity trumps pure profit. From him you get the advice that’s best for your pet, not the advice that’s best for his bottom line. I’ve been taking April and her sister Friday to Higbee Beach since they were two months old. Walking that magical little strand won’t be the same without her, but as you read this, her ashes will have been scattered there, so a little piece of her will always be with me. Go get that ball, girl...

Dish Of The Week Want to treat dad like a king this Father’s Day? Then treat him to a feast that’s fit for a king! The Alaskan king crab legs at Two Mile Landing are the mack daddy of crustaceans and the perfect dish for the main man in your life. Sit on their outside deck and listen to tunes while cracking into trays of delicious crab, enough to feed the whole family. Now some people say that crabs are too much work to get to the good stuff. But didn’t your father ever tell you that hard work pays off and that the best things in life don’t come easy? So dive in, get messy, share some laughs and stories and honor the man of the moment.

Bring your own brown paper bag for this fruity and refreshing new trend! Perfect wine to enjoy sitting on a porch on a nice summer evening. Pairs well with light salads, light pastas, seafood and goat cheese.
“Have you tried a rusty nail?” It was a common refrain in the 1960s, but this classic has fallen off most bar menus and is now rarely ordered — probably due to the fact that the ingredients include only Drambuie and scotch, and that’s not for everyone. One sip will definitely put some hair on your chest. It’s one of those classic, manly cocktails beloved by the iconic members of the Rat Pack. So where can dad order up a proper rusty nail in Cape May? Hmm... We think that maybe the bartenders at the Rusty Nail know exactly how to nail one. Just a wild guess. Take dad there this weekend and enjoy some outdoor live music, with the breeze in your hair (if daddy has any) and your toes in the sand.

Must-Have Of The Week
Searching our favorite places in Cape May for those goodies you need to own now! We went in search of some Father’s Day-appropriate products and found the answer from Cabin Fever, a new booth in West End Garage that celebrates the great outdoors — and also stocks some pretty cool man-tools. The Items: A Gentlemen’s Hardware 10-in-1 camping tool. The Appeal: Who says size matters? This little accessory is all you need to get any small job done — and with Father’s Day around the corner why buy the whole box of tools when you can just buy one! The Price: $27.
“Always a favorite... the food was delicious and the service was excellent. Enjoyed the evening with friends and celebrated our 30th anniversary! Worth the trip!”

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
am not one for Father’s Day, really. And I say this as a father and as a son. I do, of course, accept gifts from my own offspring, and for that one day of the year we all pretend to be appreciative of each other, and once a few bottles of single malt (actually a cheap blend that we re-label in the basement for such occasions) I accept the tearful, guilt-stricken and grasping declarations of familial love from my countless sons and daughters. I say countless, but really all that means is that I can never be bothered to actually number them: in all likelihood there are probably no more than a score of them. I did not know Pa D’Catur very well. I was assured by Ma that there was a Pa, but over the years I realized that her stories of him being, variously, an astronaut left on the moon to die, a pirate who went down with his ship in the Indies, General Custer, and the vanished English aristo Lord Lucan could not all be true at the same time, and so I assumed that perhaps she was also not too sure of his identity. Obviously, from my own
characteristics it is safe to assume he was handsome, smart as a tack and modest, as well as tall and cartoonishly well endowed. That aside, I have few clues. I did, some years back, encounter a belligerent old fella in The Brown Room, who was giving me odd looks. When I confronted him, he declared himself to be my father, and said that on account of him being a wanted man, he knew he could not be a present father for me, and so gave me the name Jackson BillieJean D’Catur in the sure knowledge it would make me grow up tough. This much is true,
and so I sucker-punched the old fool right in the head, and he barely flinched. A terrific fight ensured, during which he cut off a piece of my ear. Then he called me “son” and I did not call him “dad”, but instead fastdrew my silver sixgun and ended the fight right there and then. So you understand this whole Father’s Day nonsense sticks in my throat a little. Some day I will of course take one of those silly DNA test things my infernal offspring are always going on about, but I am actually rather afraid that I might find out that I have some Irish blood in me, or worse, Wildwood. Can you imagine the scandal? Better I be Scotch than that! However, I am not one to be churlish and so every year I send out an official looking letter to around 30 random gents in Cape May, informing them that they are, actually and officially, sons of Colonel Henry Sawyer. This tends to bring out the inner buffoon in a man, and the results late on Friday evenings can be nothing short of hilarious.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, a night at the theater
omeone always steps up when America needs a good laugh, and 100 years ago, it was Will Rogers. Learn more about this homespun humorist as the East Lynne Theater Company presents Will Rogers’ USA. William Penn Adair Rogers was born in 1879, the youngest of eight children in an affluent family with Cherokee roots. Rogers worked the family ranch in Oologah, Oklahoma before it was Oklahoma. In 1902, Rogers took his talent for rope tricks and toured the world as the The Cherokee Kid. Later, on the vaudeville circuit with his wife and four children, he expanded his act to include humorous observations. His wit took him to the“Ziegfeld Follies, and then to Hollywood, where talking pictures made him a star. He appeared in 71 films, and shared his thoughts in newspaper columns, on the radio, and in six books. In 1935, Rogers, an ardent promoter of aviation, died in a plane crash in Alaska with fellow Oklahoman Wiley Post. He left behind a legacy of charity — the Will Rogers Institute still funds
Michael Clark
research into lung disease and the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation supports entertainers who fall on tough times. Will Rogers’ material is eerily relevant in 2017. Consider: “Everything is changing. People are taking the comedians seriously and the politicians as a joke;” or “I don’t make jokes. I just watch the government and report the facts.” Fans loved his humble, “all I know is what I read in the papers” approach. For every performance, Rogers riffed on the news of the day and managed to address controversial topics without offending, even drawing laughs from the reserved Woodrow
Wilson. Rogers called politics “the best show in the world,” but he also used humor to highlight real problems, saying, “Ten men in the country could buy the world and ten million can’t buy enough to eat.” He urged voters, ”Write your Congressman. Even if he can’t read, write to him.” Most importantly, he reminded us, “We are all here for a spell; get all the good laughs you can.” The show runs from Wednesdays through Saturdays, June 14 through July 22, at 8:30pm at the East Lynn Theater Company’s home, the First Presbyterian Church, 500 Hughes Street. Tickets are $32, with discounts for seniors, students, and active military. The show is free for kids 12 and under. Tom Byrn stars and Gayle Stahlhuth directs. The show was adapted by Paul Shyre and first produced by George Spota. To buy tickets or for more information, visit eastlynnetheater.org. The 8:30 curtain gives you time to shower and eat dinner after the beach, and the Merion Inn is right across the street for an after show cocktail — they are famous for their martinis — or dessert.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My brother-in-law died suddenly last week and my eight-year-old son is asking many questions about his death — which was sudden. I am having trouble trying to deal with his death myself, but also confused as to where to draw a line regarding how to answer his questions truthfully, yet not give him more information than is necessary or good for him to know, not the least of which is his concern that we could die suddenly. Should I treat this lightly and not dwell too much on the details? He is a bit compulsive-obsessive and has always demanded details. – Bereaved Dear Bereaved Honesty is the best policy, but not too much of it. The Answer Lady suggests you tell your son the reasons for his uncle’s sud-

den death — explain that his heart was ill. He may want to know some of the details about how the heart works and what went wrong. It might be best not to volunteer any information that he does not ask about. As to his fear that his own parents could die suddenly, perhaps reassure him that you and your spouse do the best you can to keep fit and healthy to ensure that you will be around for a long, long time. To lighten this conversation a bit and to use the connection that nature teaches us more about life than any Q&A can satisfy, the
Answer Lady suggests a nature walk at Cape May Point State Park. Don’t be afraid to use the animal world to try to explain the cycle of life. Dear Answer Lady My girlfriend’s birthday is coming up. We’ve been dating six months and I want your advice as to what to buy her. I like her a lot but I don’t want to give the impression that wedding bells are around the corner. I know what I give her could be a deal breaker but I don’t want any mixed signals. I hate misunderstandings like these. What should I do? — Paranoid Dear Paranoid Holy relationship phobic! I guess “follow your heart” is a no-go. Three suggestions: flowers from Cape Winds Florist; romantic dinner at the Ebbitt Room or the Washington Inn and a pretty bauble from Henry’s Jewelers. This strategy says you care and will ensure you will keep those kisses flowing until your next pratfall — Christmas. That said, the Answer Lady feels compelled to remind you that this is someone you allegedly care for and she should not be treated like a valued client you want to keep close but not too close.

The Movie Column By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
M
argaret Thatcher said, “If you want something said, ask a man; if you want something done, ask a woman.” This column is dedicated to the ones who “get it done!” I have two movies to review. One of them is getting a lot of attention, and the other not so much. Both films capture the essence of a strong woman. The Wedding Plan is an Israeli film. Michal (Noe Koler) is getting married in only 21 days. She has everything together — guest list, dress, caterer. One thing is missing: a groom. Her fiancé breaks things off abruptly at the beginning of the story. Instead of canceling the wedding, she announces to her family that she wants to keep the date. She says that god will provide her with the groom. Great premise! And the ensuing story is fun to watch. Koler plays our strong, (almost) fearless protagonist beautifully. She has blind dates (some with a more literal meaning) and chance encounters. She even gets close to serious offers... but will she take them? When it comes down to the very day of her would-be
Gal Gadot is excellent in Wonder Woman wedding, will a groom appear? I say the film dips its toe in the Hallmark Channel pool one too many times; my friend, Maureen, absolutely disagrees. We both agree it’s a bit too long but also praiseworthy. If you haven’t guessed, the second film I’m reviewing is Wonder Woman! As far as superhero movies go, this one rises above the mediocrity. And for DC Comics fans, this is a relief. Unlike successful rival Marvel Comics (Iron Man, Avengers, Spider Man), DC has struggled in recent years to produce watch-
able films. Green Lantern (2011), Man of Steel (2013) and Batman v Superman (2016) were all not well received. Wonder Woman breaks that bad streak with solid storytelling, masterful cinematography, excellent acting, and… well can I just say… fun! Gal Gadot is completely endearing as the lead. Her presence on the screen is nothing short of captivating. Yeah, I’m totally crushin’. Her chemistry with Chris Pine (who plays Steve Trevor) was outstanding. The art direction was powerful yet subtle. And Veronica, I agree: the liberation of Veld scene is “indescribable!” You must see it to believe. Overall, despite a few clichés (sadly, at key moments), this film delivers with style. Did I mention Gadot was enthralling? Oh, I did? Got it. The directors for both films are noteworthy. Patty Jenkins (Wonder Woman) also directed Monster (2003), earning Charlize Theron a Best Actress Oscar. Rama Burshtein (The Wedding Plan) is internationally acclaimed; her work has appeared in prominent festivals. Let’s hear it for the ones who get it done!

Bird Droppings
T
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
he problem with leaving Cape May for any extended period is the knowledge of all you will miss. This June, the last mourning warbler will straggle through, but I’ll miss it. There might be a shearwater blitz in the rips but I’ll be 400 miles away. The first southbound shorebirds will reach Cape May airspace in late June but the yodeled notes will not reach my ears. Young American robins will test their wings and I will not be here to cheer them on. The burble and chirp of purple martins will reach the level of a crescendo at Cape May Point State Park, but not loud enough to reach me in Maine. Even the slow, gathering silence that engulfs June woodlands will be lost to me. And, of course, there is no telling what smoking-hot rarity is going to touch down unsanctified by my presence. Being Cape May, it is certain some rarity will appear. It’s what kept me peninsula-bound my first six summers here. Then, around 1970, I surrendered to the insistence of my then girlfriend and took a trip to Cape Hatteras.
How much could a person miss in a week? In terms of numbers it amounted to but one rare species. In terms of significance, it was an ulcer bleeder, a new state record. “Oh look,” said Cynthia the day of our return, “someone spotted a longspur. Tearing the bird-sighting sheet from her hands, my worst fears were realized. “A longspur?” I chastened. The sighting was of a chestnut-sided longspur. It remains Cape May’s only record of chestnut-sided longspur and I missed it. More sad was Rich Kane’s involvement
with the bird. Birding Cape May Point State Park, he was approached by a novice birder who asked Rich whether he would like to see a chestnut-collared longspur? Rich answered in the affirmative and was guided to an area off the main trail where the then editor of Records of New Jersey Birds was greeted by a male house sparrow, which superficially resembles a male chestnut-collared longspur. Concluding that the new birder had made an understandable mistake, Rich took his leave. A decision he came to regret. One week later, a beautiful photo of the chestnut-collared longspur and detailed description arrived on Rich’s desk courtesy of the bird’s finder. So not only does one leave Cape May at one’s peril, one visits Cape May with misfortune tugging at your elbow, too. With Facebook part of birdcraft, chances are the next chestnut-collared longspur will be surrounded by a hundred admirers and collaborators 10 minutes after its discovery. If it happens while I’m gone, I’ll know all about it before my return. It couldn’t happen again, could it?

BLUE is still a pup. He loves to run in the yard and take long walks. He has excellent leash walking skills and would make a terrific hiking, walking or running partner. Blue waits in his kennel with tail wagging and bright eyes begging to be noticed. Volunteers take him for daily walks but it’s not enough for a young dog who really needs a family!
PENELOPE is a 6 year old, stocky (about 60 pounds) bundle of love and affection. She enjoys running at top speed in the yard and taking very long walks. Penelope loves human companionship and lived happily in a home before coming to the shelter. Penelope would be a loving addition to an active family. Adopt today!
KYLO-REN is a senior lab mix with a lot of luster left in his life! His favorite thing to do is play fetch in the yard with his beloved tennis ball and go for a ride in the car. He walks very nicely on the leash and knows sit and paw. If you’re looking for an older companion with still a lot of energy, Kylo-Ren would be perfect for you!

BENEDICT is a tiger-striped tabby who loves being around his cat friends and is always looking for a friend to hang with. Benedict also loves being pet and groomed. He waits patiently every day for the nice ladies at the shelter to come by and pet him. So, if you’re looking for the perfect cat to complete your kitty clan then give Benedict a chance!
GWEN is your classic model cat! She hunts, snuggles and purrs all day long. She enjoys messing around with the dogs here at the shelter and they enjoy Gwen too! Who wouldn’t want a classic cat like her? Stop by the shelter and ask for the classy black and white little lady, Gwen will be eagerly waiting!
HERBIE is a short haired black and white lovable boy who loves to snuggle. He enjoys playing with toys and hanging out on the window sills. Maybe you have room in your family for a sweetheart like Herbie? If you do, he will be patiently waiting for you to take him to his forever home. But don’t wait to long, Herbie’s getting anxious!
