LORRAINE MENNA DOYLESTOWN, PA
How long have you been coming here? As a child on day trips with my parents in the 1940s. Me and my husband also honeymooned in Cape May in 1963. Who are you normally with? My husband, children and grandchildren. Favorite thing about Cape May? The town, beautiful beaches and the programs from the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities are just a few of my favorite things. Least favorite thing? Parking is always an issue here in Cape May. Also, when people leave trash on the beach and how crowded the beaches get in the summertime. Favorite restaurants? We enjoy the Merion Inn, Aleathea’s, the Ebbitt Room and Tisha’s. Just to name a few. Favorite places to stay? Our home. If you could change one thing about Cape May, what would it be? People breaching the dunes at Poverty Beach. Also dogs on the beach during the summer season. Would you like to be featured as our Subscriber of the Week? Send us your answers to the above questions to info@exitzero.us. Please write Subscriber of the Week in the subject field. We look forward to hearing from you!

Mike DeMusz Painting Of The Week
BOOK OF THE WEEK We confer with Cape Atlantic Book Company to bring you a page turner... this week, it’s EVICTED: Forever and a Death by Donald Westlake. Commissioned 20 years ago to write the next James Bond screenplay and shelved due to political concerns at the time, Westlake instead turned it into a novel which has only now been published. James Bond fans will experience an unexpected treat about a Western businessman seeking revenge after being kicked out of Hong Kong when the island was returned to Chinese rule.
Our Staff Artist Mike DeMusz is creating a painting every week. Here he is at work on the latest. To see the completed work, check out the Exit Zero Facebook page. Better still, visit the Exit Zero Store at 109 Sunset Boulevard, across from the gas station. Even if this particular work is already sold, we have the whole Mike DeMusz inventory of prints here, along with other great Cape May artwork. You can call the store at 609-770-8479. We are open every single day from 10-6 (9-9 weekends). Or buy online at ezstore.us.

Ramblings From The Editor
C
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
ape May lost one of its titans this week with the passing of Rona Craig. Even if you don’t know the name, there’s a good chance you’ve enjoyed the fruits of the Craig family’s labors over the years. Ever visited the Washington Inn, Pelican Club, Cape May Winery, Love the Cook or Lucky Bones? We’re talking Cape May royalty. Almost 40 years ago, Rona and her husband Toby, both educators in Delaware, decided to change the direction of their lives and do something completely different. Along with their three teenage children — Michael, David and Betsy — they moved to Cape May, intent on opening a restaurant. It might not have seemed like a logical move, but Toby and Rona bought the Washington Inn, which was a tea room at the time. “We moved upstairs. Five people and a dog in three rooms and a bath,” Rona told us in an interview for the Lucky Bones cookbook a few years ago. “The work was unbelievable, but our family was so cohesive, it was a joy. The kids all worked in the restaurant.” The inspiration for such a move was a
friend of her husband, said Rona. “In addition to teaching, Toby had been working alongside a wonderful Hungarian man at a country club. This man took Toby under his wing and introduced him to a love for the hospitality business, especially for food service.” That man, said Toby, “came to America with three dollars in his pocket, and he made a name for himself. My wife and I had a beautiful house in Delaware, and we had security with our teaching jobs. But we, too, left it all for the unknown. I’d always had the restaurant indus-
try in my blood. There wasn’t any doubt in our minds that we were going to make it.” Rona recalled that “fellow teachers laughed at us. Even Toby’s father was afraid for us. But we never doubted.” And they were right. The Washington Inn was a success story and, along with The Mad Batter on Jackson Street, started the revolution that eventually led Cape May to be announced as the restaurant capital of New Jersey. The Craig family later opened the iconic Pelican Club, at the top of Marquis de Lafayette hotel, then moved the operation in 2006 to what is know Lucky Bones. They also operate the fourth-largest winery in the state, along with Cape May Roasters, producing coffee sold at their popular Love the Cook store. It’s a Cape May dynasty, built the right way. “If I’ve learned anything, it’s to follow your dreams,” said Rona after the opening of Lucky Bones. “Plan and execute, but always, always, whatever you do, follow your dreams.” Cape May will miss her energy, her presence, her sense of community. Rest in peace, Rona.

Dish Of The Week Is there a more appropriate restaurant to host our Dish of the Week than one named for America’s first president? Not only that, but we’re talking about the quintessential American dish. Yes, this week we are eating at the Washington Inn and savoring their signature Caramelized Onion and Bleu Cheese Burger. In a town full of excellent burgers, this is among the best. The meat is succulent and the onions and cheese are melt-in-your-mouth good. Enjoy it in one of the renovated dining rooms or in The Wine Bar, where there’s always a happening vibe. And this is in honor of the late Rona Craig, Washington Inn co-founder, who passed away earlier this week.

Brewed wth a heavy-handed portion of wheat and oats, expect a soft, pillowy body with a restrained bitterness, yet a rich and enticing aroma. With notes of pineapple, melon, and ripened stone fruits on the nose and a subtle citrus zest on the finish.
This is a classic white Rhone style blend. Floral on the nose, this wine transitions to a spicy textural palate showcasing delicate tropical and orchard fruits. Pairs with root vegetables, squash and creamy seafood dishes.

Looking to get into the Fourth of July spirit? This fun, fruity frozen cocktail may not be the most American drink, considering rum is the base ingredient, but it sure looks like an American flag distilled into a glass. And in this case, looks are everything. The Miami Vice, which consists of a pina colada layered on top of a strawberry daquiri, is the perfect accessory to complete your proud-to-be American vibe. And hey, it tastes pretty good, too. Now, although it’s lacking the color blue, maybe ask the bartender for a splash of Blue Curacao on top and there ya go! Harry’s Miami Vice was voted the best drink in 2015 by dotheshore.com, so stop by on your way to the fireworks. It’s your American duty...

The Old Fogey
H
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
ow I adore the Glorious Fourth of July, when we roam our private estates, drink fine single malt and hunt peasants for sport, whilst discussing how important we are! Oh wait, damn, that’s an entry in my diary for July 4, 2020! I get ahead of myself sometimes! Did you know Cape May was the original, official and historic home of July 4 celebrations? Oh yes, it’s documented, if you know where to look. Which I think is page 556 of the book Secret American Things That are True, the only surviving copy of which rests on the top shelf of the temperature-controlled library in the basement of The D’Catur Mansion, guarded 24 hours a day and behind a footthick steel door. So it’s possible that you may not have seen it. On the offchance you missed it, on account of not being important enough to have been allowed in, or because you were born outside of Cape May Township, or have spent more than six months of your life cumulatively outside of the township, let me read to you the original July 4 entry, the Declaration of Independence:
“Let the world knowe that without the Cape May Militias, led by the redoubtable Colonel Jack D’Catur, a gentleman of remarkable handsomeness and stature, there woulde be no Independence from the British. As reward, Cape May will be allowed to fire one thousand tons of gunpowder into the air every anniversary, and indeed shall be legally required to, as the year they do not, this republic is doomed to fall to anarchists and buffoons.” Of course, that first year we had something of a surplus of gunpowder and less expertise than now, and misread the instruc-
tions and set of 100,000 tons of blackpowder, which did indeed mark our independence in style, but also blasted Cape May 30 feet away from neighboring land, causing the canal to be formed. Also, there was a fissure opened to the core of the earth, from which thousands of ill-formed pre-humans poured. We drove them north, with sticks and curses — and thus Wildwood was born. We scaled it back after that: the 1:1 scale reenactment of the battle of Cowpens was proving to be taxing for local medical services, and Carney’s amous Wet Redcoat Tunic contest was just too rowdy to continue. But I am growing bored of the usual fireworks: our status as the home of independence is under threat, and the major TV networks do not even show up any more. So this year, my idea is to have the 100 tons of fireworks packed in a single canister and set to detonate when it is fired aloft at midnight. If my calculations (on an Uncle Bill’s napkin) are correct, it will spell out freedom in lights in the sky. If not, then we will all achieve another kind of freedom.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, Music in the Park
ome to a concert at Rotary Park this summer and watch what happens when a community comes together to listen to music outdoors. Music takes a pleasant evening — birds chirping over traffic, kids squealing in play, a trolley bell ringing on the next block — and transforms it into a communal experience. When the first note plays, the gathering goes from a collection of individuals to a cohesive group, clapping and singing, showing respect to members of the armed services as their theme songs are played, or getting a little weepy when a sad song is sung. It’s different from listening to the radio while you do chores, or wearing headphones and listening alone. The shared experience around a bandstand is special. Bandstands are a product of the Industrial Revolution. Victorian-era leaders feared that the modern way of working would dehumanize people, but good music and green space might free the mind from “urban griminess.” And by providing public performance space, they hoped to free their streets
Michael Clark
from organ grinders, singing beggars and other performers who disturbed those doing “higher kinds of brainwork.” At first, musicians in parks improvised, performing from tree stumps or pulling their bandwagons into a clearing. After 1861, many towns copied the domed bandstand first erected in London’s Royal Horticultural Gardens. The simple design kept out the rain and amplified the sound. Once a town had a bandstand, traveling musicians pressured its neighbor, arguing that they could not perform with “nothing but their pants to sit on.” A quality bandstand
became the mark of a quality town. At Cape May’s new bandstand, there’s no charge to enjoy Music in the Park all summer. Concerts are held every Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday evenings at 7pm, from June 30 through September 16. Music in the Park will feature a variety of acts, from the sparkly, jangly mummers-style Duffy String Band or Cape May County String Band, to big band music from the Wind Symphony of Southern New Jersey. Barbershop-style singing comes from the women of the Sweet Adelines and the men of the Mainliners Chorus. America’s Sweethearts sing the complex harmonies of the Andrews Sisters and other acts of the 1930s and ’40s. There are some benches, but bring a chair or a blanket, and spray yourself with bug spray before you arrive. You can bring snacks, or take a short walk to the mall for ice cream or fudge. It’s more about hearing than seeing, so pick a spot far from the performers if you’d like room to dance, rock the baby to sleep, or blow bubbles — toddlers apparently love to combine bubbles and music.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I have been overweight for a long time and through physical exercise and a nutritionist’s help, I have lost 50 pounds. Problem is, my daughter has not acknowledged, even in passing, my weight loss. I keep waiting for her to say, “Wow, mom, you look great.” I don’t want to beg for compliments and I know I sound needy, but it took hard work to take off that weight and I would like an acknowledgment of it from my daughter, who could stand to lose a few pounds herself. Should I let this go or ask her why she is so sparse with her compliments? — In Need of a Pat on the Back Dear In Need Clearly there is some unstated resentment here. Your daughter may not even know what is at the heart of it. Perhaps your loss is
Wise answers to perplexing questions
a silent reminder of her gain. Invite her to a tasting at Hawk Haven Winery. After a glass or two of vino, ask her what she thinks of the weight loss? The Answer Lady also wonders if your efforts to lose weight have alienated her. Why not include her in some activities like a nature walk or a kayaking trip? The Nature Center of Cape May has a whole roster of activities that would be fun and not too taxing. Dear Answer Lady I’m worried about my granddaughter. She is only nine years old, but she is already
starting to gain weight. My daughter-in-law rarely cooks. Their diet is mostly processed food, take-out and fast food. None of this seems to bother my son, who certainly grew up in family that cooked a meal every night. In fact, he is a chef. So I am completely befuddled by this. I am worried about my granddaughter’s health and her path forward in life. What can I do without sounding like a nagging, interfering mother-in-law? — Worried Granny Dear Worried The only thing you can really do is lead by example. Invite your granddaughter over to dinner as often as you think is acceptable. When she does come, take her shopping with you. Go to Rea’s farmers market, Duckie’s and LeGates and let her help you select the fruits and vegetables. Show her how to prepare dishes with fresh ingredients. Let her take pride in her accomplishments and invite her parents over to dinner a few times to show off her new-found skills. But be mindful that this is something you and granddaughter share. Lecturing her parents will get you nowhere.

hy are some of us so obsessed with the obituaries page? A new documentary focuses on this one area of the newspaper you probably don’t think much about — even if you do read them every day. I’m not at that place yet, but I can see a time in life when I may be. Then again, I don’t know if I will ever be that fixated. Because let’s face it, as you get older do you really want a daily reminder of mortality? Obit is the study of obituary writing as seen through the eyes of The New York Times. It focuses on the storytelling, positioning and other elements of obituaries that you may not consider. The filmmakers concentrate on how this obscure department handles this sensitive subject based on their subject’s popularity or claim to fame. The essential elements of this film really drew me in. I love writing, history, The New York Times lore, and quirky subject matter. I wanted to love this film, but I ended up just really liking it. There were so many different places it could’ve gone. Instead, it seemed to revolve on
By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society
Jeff Roth, New York Times archivist subject matter with a noticeable degree of repetition. In addition, it seemed to be making mountains out of molehills. When a person with semi-famous stature dies, the editors struggle to decide if they’re going to put their obituary on the front page or with just an announcement referring to it back in the obit section. I’m
not sure that subject matter alone was enough to dedicate minutes of time. Or how about how corrections are done? No need to dwell. Net result: the film could’ve been two-thirds the length. Still, there were good points. Jeff Roth, pictured here, is the last remaining archivist at the newspaper, and he provides the funnier scenes. The writers have an almost Buddhist message when speaking about the work. Life and death, hand-in-hand. Joy and sorrow, walking together. You may not be thrilled over a film about obituaries, but you can’t ignore its insight into the human condition. School is out, which means it’s time for Teen Film Camp. This Friday, June 30, 7pm, the films from this year’s camp will be screened at Cape May City Elementary School. Admission is free. All week long, these teens work hard to write, shoot, and edit a complete film. Mike LaVancher, camp director, and his team walk into the week with a lot of equipment and enthusiasm. Mix in a little creativity, and the result is a night of entertaining films by our most talented kids!

Bird Droppings
W
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
elcome to Tween Time, that nebulous period between spring and fall migration. In Cape May this means June 10 to about July 1. However, some nonbreeding shorebird species continue to migrate north in June and a few, post-breeding adults, reach Cape May as early as June 20. Fall migrants in June? Sure. Why not? Summer in the Arctic where most shorebirds breed is short. The shorebird parenting cycle brief and one-sided. Young are highly precocial, able to feed themselves. Two adults minding the store is overkill so one typically departs while eggs are being incubated by the bird’s mate. Fully fledged, the young birds will follow the adults south by August having laid down fat reserves during the insect rich-days of Arctic summer. How young know the route south without adult supervision is a mystery but most accomplish the feat and many will be crowding into Cape May’s coastal marshes in the weeks ahead. Yellowlegs, dowitchers, even the tiny sanderlings that entertain
visitors by playing tag with the waves. Come July, the first of the southbound songbirds will be infiltrating Cape May’s woodlands. In the vanguard will be yellow warbler whose migration peaks in the first week of August, while some resident yellow warblers are still maintaining territories and rearing young. If you are visiting Cape May, now, be assured that there will be an array of breeding and migrating birds to entertain you. The Cape May Bird Checklist published by Cape May Bird Observatory lays out the seasonal
abundance of over 400 species, most of which are found her during the summer months. Lists are free and may be picked up at 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point during hours that cater to most human schedules. While you are there, pick up a schedule of daily walks. Led by local experts, leisurely and calibrated to showcase the Cape’s celebrated bird life, a two hour walk will put you well on the way toward listing many of Cape Mays 400 or so regularly occurring bird species. But if you would like to start your list with something out of the ordinary, a forktailed flycatcher has been lingering at Cape May Point State Park. This South American species has been recorded a dozen times in Cape May since 1939 and serves to underscore Cape May’s fame as a vagrant trap. Unexpected species can and do turn up here at any time. Learn about current bird news at birdcapemay.org or attend a CMBO field trip and get the latest by word of mouth. It’s old tech but it still works. See you at the next hot rarity?
