KAY HOSHOUR YORK, PA

How long have you been coming to Cape May? We’ve been vacationing in Cape May since 1990. Prior to that we stayed in Wildwood but we would always drive to Cape May to eat and drink. Who are you normally with? With my husband on vacation. However, I’ve been contracting with the Coast Guard since 1999 and have spent many days loving being in Cape May while working. Favorite thing about Cape May? Cape May is a package. Impossible to pick just one. However, waking up and going to sleep by the ocean, the overall beauty and charm of Cape May and the restaurants. Least favorite thing? That’s easy — the fact that I can’t live there. Favorite restaurants? Tisha’s and the bar at Oyster Bay are right at the top of my list for dinner. Breakfast/brunch is fun at the Blue Pig Tavern and the Mad Batter. For dockside treats and outdoor enjoyment next to the water, we head to the Lobster House Raw Bar and over the bridge to Harbor View restaurant’s dock. Favorite places to stay? Just one: Sea Crest Inn. If you could change one thing about Cape May what would it be? Make it less of a “McMansion”/condo town. Want to be featured? Send us your answers to the above questions to info@exitzero.us. Write Subscriber of the Week in the subject field.

NAUTI WORD OF THE WEEK

moon . raker

Refers to a rare sail used on clipper sailing ships. The moonraker would be at the top of the mast, and it was also called a moonsail, hope-in-heaven, or hopesail.

Mike DeMusz Painting Of The Week

BOOK OF THE WEEK We confer with Cape Atlantic Book Company to bring you a page turner... this week, it’s WHEN THE ENGLISH FALL by David Williams. Seen through the diary of an Amish farmer named Jacob as he tries to protect his family and his way of life, this novel examines the idea of peace in the face of deadly chaos: Should members of a nonviolent society defy their beliefs and take up arms to defend themselves? And if they don’t, can they survive?

Our Staff Artist Mike DeMusz is creating a painting every week. Here he is at work on the latest. To see the completed work, check out the Exit Zero Facebook page. Better still, visit the Exit Zero Store at 109 Sunset Boulevard, across from the gas station. Even if this particular work is already sold, we have the whole Mike DeMusz inventory of prints here, along with other great Cape May artwork. You can call the store at 609-770-8479. We are open every single day from 10-6 (9-9 weekends). Or buy online at ezstore.us.

Ramblings From The Editor

M

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

any of you have read what Cape May was like in the past — after all, a lot of interesting things have been written about America’s Original Seaside Resort, much of it in that fabulous history book, The First Resort, written by Ben Miller, which we, ahem, happened to publish. But this week, I was thinking about how Cape May would look in the future... 50 years or so from now. Why? Because on Wednesday (after we went to press) I booked tickets for a show at Congress Hall, called Into the Third Century. It’s the followup to the genuinely fun dinner theater event the hotel ran last summer to celebrate its 200th anniversary. The new show begins with the opening up of a time capsule during Labor Day weekend of 2016. You may recall that, last Labor Day, the staff at Congress Hall buried a time capsule as part of those anniversary celebrations. The show once again features the hotel’s managing partner Curtis Bashaw playing himself, at the age of 106. Curtis’ grandfather,

I took part in a lot of audience singalongs last year and had a blast. Makes for a nice change of pace from my usual Cape May night, which features good food and drinks. Having said that, you also get that here — the $75 ticket includes a three-course dinner and tableside wine. Price is $25 for kids under 12. The show runs every Wednesday through August 23. Call 609-884-6542 for more information. In my joint favorite movie of all time, It’s A Wonderful Life (tied with Jaws), there’s that quote, from the mouth of Clarence the angel, that we all know... “Each man’s life touches so many other lives.” Never was that maxim better illustrated than at Cape May Winery last week, when it seemed like the population of Cape Island (and beyond) had turned up to pay tribute to the late Rona Craig, co-founder of the winery, along with the Washington Inn and Lucky Bones. The wait for the receiving line was two-and-a-half hours. For Toby, Michael, David and Betsy, that had to mean a helluva lot. To be loved, remembered and respected like that... it’s something we all aspire to.

³ the iconic Reverend Carl McIntire, died one month short of his 96th birthday so maybe it’s not THAT big of a stretch (I’m pretty sure Curtis goes to the gym way more than his grandaddy did). The show, co-written by Curtis and Congress Hall marketing manager Iraisa Ann Reilly, features 13 actors (most of them employees of the Cape Resorts group). Iraisa also co-wrote, with Cape Resorts colleague Myra Vassian, three original songs, which augment some American folk classics.

Dish Of The Week The average American eats 30 pounds of French fries per year. That’s no small potatoes! And since July 13 is National French Fry Day (what, you never knew that?), we thought that little fun fact would be interesting (or depressing). So where can you enjoy this salty treat? To be honest, pretty much anywhere in Cape May. But where do we recommend? The Iron Pier Craft House for their delicious truffle fries. They come topped with truffle oil, pecorino cheese and fresh herbs. They are so delightful you won’t even need to dip. So embrace the day and order away. Or, in the words of that famous crooner... Come fry with me!

BEER OF THE WEEK Crusty Barnacle Style: Pale Ale ABV: 6.0% Cape May Brewing Company

For Reservations Call: 609-884-9119 322 Washington Street Mall, Cape May • www.tishasfinedining.com •

Fabulous Food & Cool Cocktails in a Casual Pub Atmosphere!

$18.99 from Sunset Liquors 106 Sunset Boulevard The juice is fermented and aged in 50% neutral French oak barrels and 50% stainless steel. These methods create a balance — vibrant acidity complemented by texture from barrel fermentation and aging, bringing depth and complexity.

It’s the French Fry issue. And where do French fries stem from? Potatoes, obviously. And what liquor is made from potatoes? Vodka (obviously). And who uses sweet potatoes to distill their vodka, in turn creating delicious, farm to bottle cocktails? Nauti Spirits. They put the sweet in sweet potato vodka, mixing up one tasty drink after another. Feeling salty after a Fry-day? Don’t be a hesi-tater! Order a Nauti Spirits bloody mary made from scratch and garnished with seasonal ingredients — then kiss that hangover goodbye. Now that we’ve convinvced you (not that we had to, it’s just that good!), say hi to “Captain” Paul Smargiassi, the nice looking gentleman behind the bar. Tell him we sent you.

Must-Have Of The Week

Searching our favorite places in Cape May for those goodies you need to enjoy now! We went in search of some French fry-appropriate products and found the answer from Lucky Bones Beach on the promenade. The Items: French fries, of course! The Appeal: July 13 marks National French Fry Day. And what better way to celebrate the fried potato than ordering up a basket of Lucky Bones freshly cut fries right off the beach. After you’ve inhaled them, go for a long, brisk walk on the promenade and, voila, calories gone! The Price: $3.50 a basket.

The Old Fogey

D

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

id you know French fries were actually invented in Cape May? It’s not something we make much of a fuss about, usually, as those snacks are known to attract the wrong sort of visitor to our city, if you don’t mind me saying so. And even if you do. Also, we were not, back in those days, trying to fry potatoes, but an actual Frenchman: tensions were high as Cape May had initially been selected as the home in exile of Napoleon Boneparte, and we were not really thrilled with that: small men are, by and large (large — ahaha) trouble, and I tend to stick to the dear departed Ma D’Catur’s rule of thumb on the matter: “Inside every wee man is a Napoleon waiting to conquer the world. More so when the wee man is Napoleon.” So the Frenchman who arrived to commandeer The Admiral Hotel for Boney to live in was an arrogant sort, not unlike a Yankee or someone from Philly, and after a few malts, we decided that the best course for (almost) everyone would be to fry him in the Admiral’s kitchens, and send him home as a

kind of warning snack. But in the melee, he escaped, and Ernie Hemingway shot a sack of potatoes by mistake, sending the fragments into the bubbling fat instead of our Gallic enemy. Well, the smell was enticing, and so we delayed the pursuit to taste the “Frenchman, Fried” dish, or rather the failed one. And I must say, they were delicious! So much so that we ended up shooting many pounds of those spuds and frying them all! Of course, as tends to happen here in Cape May, we take a good idea and overdo it, and so the attempt to convert the hotel swimming pool

into a vast deep fryer ended up setting fire to the entire hotel: it’s said that if, on a dark night, when the breeze is right, you stand on the site of the hotel, you can catch a delicious whiff of fries on the air. Well, the name stuck, even though the origin thankfully was lost, and now French fries are the toast of the morbidly obese worldwide! We Cape May natives, though, only have them once a year, did you know? And among the potatoes, is always a tiny hand carved one in the shape of Napoleon Boneparte. Whoever gets that fry and eats it is destined to rule the world, local superstition has it, and so they are most often tracked down and throttled, just to make sure that kind of thing doesn’t actually happen. Personally, I am not a huge fan, unless I can drench them in vinegar, and serve them with a generous helping of mushy peas. Of course, they kick and scream when the vinegar gets in their eyes, but… oh, wait… we’re still talking about fries and not Frenchmen? Aha, well, just my little joke! Move along, nothing to see here, mon ami!

S

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, a day at Historic Cold Spring Village

ometimes, you need a break from the beach. Luckily, Cape May is full of additional ways to spend your vacation. One of my favorites is Historic Cold Spring Village (HCSV), an open-air living history museum located about four miles north of downtown Cape May. Walk along the streets of the village and you can convince yourself it is 1800. The school bell is ringing and eager children are sliding into seats in the one-room schoolhouse. A woman sits by a kitchen door, carding wool while bread bakes in her outdoor oven. The blacksmith shapes metal into horseshoes, and the printer rearranges his type. An anti-slavery speaker opines on a doorstep, or a musician performs in the bandstand. Visitors move from building to building, learning a bit about book binding, woodworking, broom making, and pottery. Sheep and goats hug the fence, bleating out calls for treats. I’ve gone with people of all ages, from toddlers to octogenarians, and we all had a good time.

Michael Clark

Treat yourself to old-fashioned candy from the country store, a cold beer from the brewery, ice cream, or a full lunch at the Cold Spring Grange. Roll a hoop with a stick — it’s harder than it looks. Take pictures of your kids in the stocks or wearing period clothing. Most weekends, special events add to the fun. On July 15 and 16, the Celtic Fair takes over. There will be a pub area, with live music accompanied by dancers with swirling kilts. Past years have included puppet shows and craft stations. HCSV is located at 720 Route 9, Cape May. In summer, the village is open from 10

to 4:30, Tuesday through Sunday. Admission is $12 for adults and $10 for children aged three to 12, and some of the crafts charge a small additional fee. The brewery (open noon to 8) and restaurant (open noon to 3:30) are located just outside the village fence at the additional entrance on Seashore Road. Wear comfortable shoes. Let the kids wear bonnets or tricorn hats if you have them. Don’t forget the sunscreen. Speaking of sunscreen, you can start the day with a free skin cancer screening at Cape May Convention Hall on July 15, from 9:30 to 12:30. Dr Lawrence Paolini and the Cape May County Department of Health are taking part in Choose Your Cover, a statewide campaign to prevent skin cancer, the most common cancer in the country. You don’t have to have Celtic blood to need sun-smart precautions — people of color also benefit. Choose Your Cover reminds you to apply about an ounce of sunscreen 30 minutes before going outside and to use protection even on shady days — sunscreen, protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I know you often write about golf and I have a question for you. On two separate occasions, one of the guys in our foursome hit my ball and ruined what could have been a great score. So what’s the rule — and the penalty — for playing the wrong ball? I don’t want to make too big a deal out of it because he’s old and doesn’t see all that well, but I also want to play my shot. I ended up with a bogey on that hole. — Bummed about the Bogey Dear Bummed According to PGA rules, the answer falls under Rule 15-3b: “If a competitor makes a stroke or strokes at a wrong ball, he incurs a penalty of two strokes. The competitor must correct his mistake by playing the correct ball or by proceeding under the Rules. Strokes

Wise answers to perplexing questions

made by a competitor with a wrong ball do not count in his score. If the wrong ball belongs to another competitor, its owner must place a ball on the spot from which the wrong ball was first played.” The Answer Lady also suggests that while you are at Cape May National Golf course, pop into the pro shop and buy a box of Titleist pink balls. No mistaking those. Dear Answer Lady We went to church Sunday and the preacher told the congregation that when we die, our marriage vows are annulled and we

won’t go to heaven as a married couple. I’m fine with that but my wife isn’t and has been arguing and nagging at me ever since. I didn’t make the rule. What am I supposed to do about it? — Marital Quagmire Dear Quagmire You might remind your wife that if she continues to worry about the afterlife, the future of her marital status in this life might make it all a moot point. The Answer Lady might add that telling her, “You’re fine with it,” might not be the best approach. Put things back on a positive track rather than a negative one. Tell her this is why it is so important to make the most of the days you have on earth. Heaven will take care of itself. A romantic evening to reassure her that your love is strong is in order. The Answer Lady suggests an evening at the Chalfonte Hotel. Begin with dinner in the Magnolia Room. Many nights, there is music in the King Eddy Room. You can enjoy an after-dinner cocktail on the rocking chairs on the porch and then a lovely walk down to the beach where you can see firsthand the beauty of the world.

The Movie Column

W

By Tom Sims of Cape May Film Society

Baby Driver... it’s a fun ride ago. Doc could have killed him, but he liked the kid’s driving — saw him as an asset. So he kept him on the team, and with one more job Baby will have paid off his debt. But as Doc points out, that doesn’t mean the next job is his last job. So we have a gangster getaway driver who wants out of the business. Not exactly innovative storytelling. Baby also meets the girl of his dreams, Debora (Lily James) — and they both want to run away together.

Instead her life becomes as threatened as his. See what I mean? Boulevard du Cliché. Still you like Baby and Debora. Spacey turns in a noteworthy performance considering he wasn’t given much to work with. Jamie Foxx and John Hamm are outstanding as characters that were not all that inspired. In other words... you’ll have summer fun for a couple hours, but it’s not going to burn in your memory. In fact, the most memorable part about this movie happened as I went to see it. I paid for my ticket and didn’t notice the price — except that it was cheaper. I looked at the ticket again. I was charge the senior ticket price! What? Senior price? Okay, I admit that I am 51. But to be charged the senior rate at the movies? Outrageous! Oh wait... I saved three bucks? Umm... never mind. So what else is there to say? The old man liked this action flick, but he just thought it was going to be better. He can be sort of grumpy like that.

hen it comes style versus substance, some movies apparently have to choose. Baby Driver is a new thriller that scores high marks on style. This is your garden-variety car chase flick with lots of action, but with all the plot at the corner of Overdone Avenue and Cliché Boulevard. Our main character, a guy named Baby, is played by Ansel Elgort. He may look younger than 23, but he’s no newcomer to the big screen. Baby is the best getaway driver a gang of bank robbers could ever hire. The opening sequence is simply dynamic. Kevin Spacey is the ring leader, Doc, and Baby’s biggest supporter. Sure, the kid is quirky — always needs to listen to (very cool) music because of the ringing in his ears. But Doc gives his protégé an equal slice of the pie. That is, until the two of them are alone. Then Doc takes 90% of the “equal share” he told all the other gang members he was giving Baby. You see, Baby muscled in on a heist going down by Doc and stole a bundle years

Bird Droppings

T

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

his would have been a bad morning to be nursing a hangover in our town of Mauricetown. Starting around 6:00am, our local troop of blue jays started screaming bloody murder. The object of the jays’ angst was likely directed at the neighborhood Cooper’s hawk or perhaps some egg-hungry black snake. Snakes, hawks and owls are the usual villains and this morning’s protest was spirited enough to draw in titmice, mockingbirds and even reticent species like northern cardinal. After 10 minutes or so, half of the blue jays headed off, leaving the balance to end the ruckus as they saw fit. Deprived of leadership and perhaps a villain, the mob quietly disbanded. What purpose do these avian flash mobs serve? The standard answer is that they alert the neighborhood to potential danger. I’ve seen birds mobbing clusters of brown leaves that only remotely resembled a roosting owl. In fact I once saw a jay land next to a vacant tree cavity that once served as a screech owl roost site and start screaming into the open-

ing. Curious, I climbed the tree and discovered the cavity empty. No owl. I suspect that some mobbing actions are instigated mostly for diversion or fun. This one might have been instigated for practice, a drill. The troop would have been a family group, two adults and four young. It might well have been the youngster’s first mobbing action and they were clearly in to it as evidenced by the several birds that remained after the adults and one or more sibling’s left. Curious, I braved the morning dew and coffee cup in hand went

over to the site of the incident, discovering not the anticipated black snake but two young blue jays harassing a cluster of leaves. So jays are stupid? No, jays are very intelligent. They simply like to play. My suspicion is that the local Cooper’s hawk triggered the mobbing action and after it’s cover was blown, fled the scene. Mom and dad followed. The remaining young blue jays, being young, were simply reluctant to end the game. An eventuality that our breeding house wrens were eagerly anticipating. Drawn into the ruckus, the wrens were still buzzing about while their young in the nearby box went unattended. My arrival appeared to signal an end to the fray. The teenage jays went off in search of other adventure or mom and dad. The wrens went back to the busy matter of parenting. Being attuned to the natural world is to have front row seats to an ongoing drama on a world stage. Sometimes all you witness is a rehearsal. But it beats being bored. Fact is, you never know. This time leaves, next time owl. I’m simply relieved it wasn’t a snake, an opinion shared by the nesting wrens.
