Ramblings From The Editor

P

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

lenty of people dream about living full-time in Cape May, while others say they could never live in a seaside resort — it’s not a real town, the feeling usually goes. And for many seaside towns, that IS the reality. Places where you can’t get a healthy mix of good restaurants and shopping, social events, culture... the kinds of things that sustain a soul. Next Saturday, August 5, illustrates just how Cape May continues to raise the bar for resort towns, not just on the Jersey Shore, but nationwide. What’s to do that night? Let’s focus on two pretty stellar events. The first is one of the highlights of the cultural calendar, the annual Victor Grasso art show at SOMA NewArt Gallery. For 11 years, Victor has been wowing the crowds with his sublime creations, and that talent is now recognized nationally (with pieces shown in New York City) and internationally (he’s shown in Denmark and will have a solo show in Copenhagen next summer). The artists’ reception at SOMA on August 5, from 6-9, will also feature the work of Greg

Bennett — so expect some more stunning seascapes from this supremely talented painter. The second event that night is the Midsummer Party at Beach Plum Farm, one of the most popular new destinations on the island. This beautiful, 62-acre spot in West Cape May is hosting a party that raises money for the Fund for Cape May. See that beautiful new Rotary Park? That happened as a result of public money and at least $400,000 donated by the fund, via events like the Ice Ball at Congress Hall. Well, the Midsummer Party is the warm-

weather version of that. For $75 ($35 for under21s), enjoy picnic bites inspired by Beach Plum Farm produce, an open bar and music by a great band called Little Country. And ALL of the proceeds go to the Fund for Cape May. The farm event runs from 6:30-9pm, the same time as the Grasso show. What to do? There are a lot of people who are going to want to do both, so do it! I will be. Maybe start off at SOMA, see the wonderful work of Grasso and Bennett, enjoy a glass of wine and a snack, chat to fellow art lovers, then head over to Beach Plum and support a great community event. Staying on the subject of must-do events, the Summer Series at Convention Hall is selling out every week, as opposed to some very slow nights on previous years. Motown icon Martha Reeves plays July 31, followed by Aaron Neville on August 9 and Mary Wilson on August 23. I heard the Arlo Guthrie concert last week went down a storm, especially when a few patrons started arguing about politics, prompting security to be called. Gotta love a bust-up between 70-somethings at a concert. Until next week...

Dish Of The Week If you’re a fan of dipping into bar mixes while sipping on a good scotch — this is the Whisky Issue, remember — then you’re going to want to save room for dessert at the Iron Pier, the neat little eatery situated above Cabanas (see ya later at Beach and Decatur...) Why? Because you can get the best of both worlds with the Soft Pretzel Bread Pudding. This sweet treat, with a kick, combines a delightfully salty pretzel pudding with bourbon sabayon (a type of egg custard), vanilla bean ice cream and salted caramel chocolate chip. After that, mosey on up to the Iron Pier bar, order a single malt and let the night slide into a lovely, fuzzy glow...

$13.99 from Sunset Liquors 106 Sunset Boulevard

On the nose, flavors of small, fresh red berries and citrus fruit. The mouth offers a great balance and freshness with aromas of gooseberries, raspberries and citrus, with floral notes. Pairs well with fish, veggies, soft white cheese and spicy dishes.

If you’re a fan of liquor, you’ll know that the Old Fashioned only recently came back into, well... fashion. If you’re a fan of “Mad Men”, you’ll know this is because TV’s sexiest man, Don Draper, would loosen his tie, take a bar seat and order one of those classic cocktails. And who doesn’t want to strike a Don Draper pose? (Assuming you’re a guy.) So, if your life has been on the rocks and you’re looking to lift your spirits, head on over to see the ebullient Sara Werner at the King Edward Bar at the Chalfonte Hotel and order up a Bulleit Old Fashioned. Not a fan of this particular whiskey? Don’t fret. There’s nothing Johnnie, Jack or Jim can’t fix.

Must-Have Of The Week

Searching our favorite places in Cape May for those goodies you need to enjoy now! We went in search of some whisky-appropriate products and found the answer from Zach Smith at Sunset Liquors on Sunset Boulevard. The Items: Dumbass Peach Whiskey and Red Neck Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey. The Appeal: Want to get tipsy on New Jersey’s newest whiskey? Founded only a little over a year ago, these flavored whiskies are all about getting your attention with fun labels. Let’s just say, these two were the least offensive to put in print. Great gifts for friends who enjoy whiskey with a sense of humor. The Price: $19.99.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

detest whiskey, adore whisky, and once upon a time was quite the whiskay aficionado. The first is the tipple of choice of homeless people and Wildwooders, the second the drink of gentle men and women, and the latter was the short-lived and utterly brilliant invention of the greatest drinking minds of Cape May. The invention came about after wreckers accidentally lured not the expected gold bullion vessel intended, but our city’s annual scotch delivery, on to the rocks off The Point. The ship and crew went down in minutes, despite an heroic rescue attempt by the combined patrons of Carney’s, The Ugly Mug, Martini Beach and The Brown Room. A human chain was formed to pass bottles along to safety. Less than one per cent of the cargo was saved. To this day, sometimes if it’s quiet, and you creep to the edge of the water, and carefully place one ear on the surface, you will hear the lost bottles clinking together on the sea bed. Also, you will hear local people guffawing at your gullibility. Anyway, there was a need for quality

alcohol. Some trickster suggested we try whiskey and was promptly doused in that very liquid and set alight for his impudence. Then I recalled the time machine that oaf H. G. Wells left in my basement in lieu of rent. “Why don’t we,” I ventured, “start the process off and rather than wait years, send the new whisky back a reasonable time and then it will have been here all along, and perfectly aged?” Well no one could find a flaw in this plan, and so off we went! In retrospect we should not have toasted the idea with a bottle

of 28-year-old Glenlivet: we were all manhandling the bottles when that fool Ernie Hemingway tripped and fell in, nudging the starter lever. There was a flash, a pop of air and, in a moment, Ernie and the bottles were gone! At the same moment the doorbell rang, and an incredibly old man was there, raving about a future vintage of amazing potency. I was about to strike him on the head when he tremored, “It is I! Hemingway! I went back to 1850 and fell out, sending the whisky to 2907!” Well, I appreciate a man with such determination as to have waited 60 years to tell me what had happened, but I was livid about having to wait close to a thousand years to taste the single malt! Obviously I will still be around then, and vital, but the idea of having to put whiskey in my mouth was too much! So ancient Ernie was set to diving to the wreck of the whisky ship, by the simple method of having his pockets filled with pebbles and being thrown off a rowboat. I reckon that he will have redeemed himself by about the time we find the future whisky.

T

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, free and easy fun for families

he idea of “free” is an evolving concept in America, the land of the free. Early settlers came here to practice their religion freely, and then argued with the next batch who came to celebrate THEIR religion freely. In 1776, we resolved “that these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States,” and then struggled with the “united” part. From the start, our hard-won freedom excluded the enslaved 10 percent of our population. Even in New Jersey, where slavery had been sort of illegal since 1804, gradual abolition meant that there were slaves until 1865. New Jersey women lost the right to vote in 1807 and didn’t regain it until 1920. Women did not own their wages or their identities. Under the principle of “coverture,” a woman was her father’s until she was her husband’s. Married women could not own property until 1852. Small wonder that people in Cape May’s Victorian heyday often used the word “free” as a negative, as when someone was “too free” with his money, or the neighbor who borrowed your horse without ask-

ing was “very free.” Someone who broke the rules of etiquette was said to “make free” or “take liberties.” People like President Franklin D. Roosevelt gave “free” good press with the Four Freedoms speech, but rock-and-roll warned us, “Freedom’s just another word for nothing left to lose.” Luckily, one definition of “free” is uncomplicated: having no cost. Complimentary. Gratis. On the house. And that is the price of family-friendly entertainment at Cape May’s Convention Hall. The shows are also free from aggravation, as there is no need to plan ahead or make a reservation.

CAPE ISLAND BIKES NEW BIKE SPECIALS!

There’s a free nature show for children every Sunday night at 7:30. Steve Serwatka, a local animal rescuer, builds empathy for animals even when they aren’t cute and cuddly by talking to kids about rescued reptiles, birds and rodents. (Okay, some of them are cute.) He also cares for rescued dogs and cats. (All of them are cute.) Your kids will be intrigued. On Tuesdays, magician Rich Lessig presents a free magic show at 7pm. On Thursdays, behind Convention Hall, there are movies on the beach. Bring a blanket or beach chairs and introduce your kids to the classics you’ve been meaning to share with them. On Fridays, you can dance with the Fred Hall Orchestra. Don’t forget the zoo, one of Cape May County’s great treasures. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Your kids will love marching around the boardwalks, watching giraffes and lemurs, mimicking bird songs, and calling for the bear to wake up from his nap. You can spend a day just looking at the reptiles, so you will want to make a donation. Maybe “free” is complicated after all. Next week: Craft Beer and Crab Festival

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My husband died two years ago and I feel I am ready to start meeting new people but I do not drink and I’m at a loss as to how to go about it. It’s been 20 years since I’ve had to think about this. My children don’t seem anxious for me to find a companion. I’m not sure if they’re worried about their inheritance or concerned about my judgment but their disapproval has stopped me from doing anything. I don’t want the rest of my life wrapped around my children. What would you suggest? — Looking for More Dear Looking You are too young to spend the rest of your life alone and wise to recognize that fact. There are a number of possibilities, especially when you live in a small town.

Wise answers to perplexing questions

The Answer Lady’s friend Tom Cupp teaches ballroom dancing, a fun great way to meet people from all walks of life. You might also want to get involved with some of the organizations in town like Animal Outreach or the Nature Center of Cape May. If birding is of any interest, Cape May Bird Observatory offers all kinds of nature walks and programs which cover the A to Zs of our finefeathered friends. Keep yourself open to everything and anything and you will surely find someone who will enrich your life.

Dear Answer Lady My girlfriend says I am a neanderthal whose only interest (besides her) is in sports, action movies and video games. She says she tries to be interested in my obsessions but I take no interest in hers, which is true. She loves theater. What am I supposed to do with that? I like her — a lot — and I want to at least try to expand my horizons. — Neanderthal Dear Neanderthal The Answer Lady has just the ticket for you. A new theater company just opened at the Cape May County Airport called Aerodrome. Currently, the play The Wreck of the Spanish Armada is in production. You can stop at Cape May Brewery for a tasting. Then, pop over to the Taco Shop for Chef Lucas Manteca’s (of Red Shop fame) fine Mexican-style take-out. Watch the corporate jets and Cessnas take off into the sunset and then catch playwright and producer Bill Sterritt’s play. Your girlfriend will be so impressed that when you ask her if she’d like to go see the Phillies play next week, she won’t even blink an eye.

The Movie Column

A

“The House” is reviewed by Mike Chamberlain

new film called The House is a rarely funny, uninspired and sometimes darker-than-necessary comedy. Despite its relatively short running time, it seems to drone on forever, which comes as a bit of a surprise considering the cast. Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler play Scott and Kate Johansen who realize, as their daughter Alex is graduating, they don’t have the money to send her to college. So what do they do? They enlist the help of their gambling-addicted neighbor Frank (Jason Mantzoukas) to start an illegal casino. What starts out as a small gaming room for a few of the neighbors soon turns into a mini Bellagio in Frank’s house, complete with spa, comedy club and pure oxygen pumped in to keep people awake and gambling longer. I couldn’t help but wonder why they didn’t just take the money spent for the incredible upgrades and pay their daughter’s tuition? There is also a subplot involving Nick Kroll as a crooked city council president who is embezzling money from the city to run off

Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler in The House with his mistress. This storyline is so underdeveloped, it’s practically forgotten about until it pops back up awkwardly in the third act. The longer the movie goes on, a mean streak starts that seems out of place with the tone of the rest of the movie. It begins with a scene where two soccer moms engage in a Fight Club-style brawl that starts out funny, but soon becomes slow-motion shots of the two being repeatedly punched in the face and blood flying everywhere. There is also a run-

ning joke involving Ferrell pushing one of his daughter’s teenage friends to the floor that is SO unfunny it makes his character less likeable. Then there are scenes of fingers and arms being cut off as well as someone being set on fire that are extremely bloody, just not funny. Ferrell and Poehler seem to be phoning it in, almost as if they realize there’s no sense in giving their all to such weak material. And then there’s poor Jeremy Renner playing a gangster who tries to rob the casino. How he ended up in this movie, with only about three minutes of actual screen time, is beyond me. My only thoughts were either he owed someone a huge favor or he’s been getting financial advice from Nicolas Cage and needed the money. The old adage that the house always wins is used several times during the movie, but in the case of The House, there are no winners here. Mike is a new contributor here. Bird Droppings

Y

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

ou can thank local birding ace Keith Seager for this column. Keith, who has been a birding presence in Cape May longer than anyone, took it upon himself to honor those among us who have tallied over 400 bird species in the county by founding a 400 Club complete with an emblematic baseball cap. You should know that there are entire states whose cumulative bird lists don’t top 400 species. Know, too, that the Cape May County cumulative list stands at 426. Given my many years in Cape May, I was pretty certain that I was in the club, even though I have never actually maintained an itemized list. This confidence was enough for Keith to honor me with an emblazoned cap. It turns out my confidence was misplaced. My county bird list totals a meager 364 species. I know this because I just got out a checklist and ticked off all the birds I recall having seen here. It was a fun exercise and a pleasant trip down memory lane. True, my list did not make the grade but included in its ranks are birds to earn the envy

of many whose totals reach threshold. Birds like fulvous whistling-duck, brown noddy and rock wren. I also include greater golden plover, a bird regarded as hypothetical by those not fortunate enough to have seen this Old World vagrant when it appeared in the South Cape May Meadows, one July, a bunch of years ago. It’s not like I couldn’t have tallied 400 species if I’d set my mind to it. I’ve turned down plenty of opportunities to see unusual birds coming to feeders or vagrants that chose to linger. Thus, not included in my list is black-

Want to know where to Eat, Shop, Stay & Play in America’s Original Seaside Resort? WHERE TO EAT, SHOP, STAY & PLAY

capped chickadee or painted bunting, two birds that lingered for weeks and were seen by scores of birders. Also not included in my 364 is yellow rail, Nelson’s sparrow and Bicknell’s thrush. I simply cannot recall any occasion when I’ve encountered these regularly occurring species in Cape May County. Cumberland County, yes, Cape May, no. So, there you have it, the confessions of a Cape May birding also ran. I’ll return the cap, Keith, and maybe contact you after I’ve made the grade. Neat idea! Smart-looking cap. There aren’t too many counties in the US where a person can find 400 species in a single human lifetime. It’s a milestone worth celebrating. Insofar as I’m still this side of the void, there may yet be time to get 36 more species before death gets in the way of my birding. If I do, maybe the cap can sit on the urn holding my ashes. If not, I’ll just face the afterlife hatless unless it turns out that somebody really is handing out halos. Of course it might take 400 species to earn a halo, too.
