Ramblings From The Editor
W
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
e’re gonna need a bigger beach. Yep, it’s that time of year again, when one of the greatest movies ever made attracts a huge crowd to the beach behind Convention Hall. With the weather forecast looking nice, there could be as many as 1,000 people hitting the beach tonight (August 10) for the annual showing of Jaws. It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve seen this 1975 classic, there are so many scenes to enjoy, so many details to savor. And the fact that you will be doing so while reclining on the beautiful beach of Cape May, with the sound of the surf providing an extra nuance to the soundtrack, is the cherry on top. And, let’s face it, the sound of those waves lapping DOES add to the tension of the movie. The movie begins at 8:30, though you should get there by 8 in order to snag a decent spot. And remember, no beach tags are required in the evening. There is, believe it or not, a downside to being married to someone 20 years your junior, as I painfully discovered during a recent
³
trip to Cape May County Zoo. I was there to try out the Tree-to-Tree Adventure Park, with my wife and a couple of friends. Diane has been bugging me for more than a year to try this out... “you’re strong, you’ll love this!” has been her constant lament. So, try it I did. I have a lot of good things to say about this zoo, which is consistently rated as one of the best in the country — and, yet, it still flies under the radar of many visitors, and locals. And I could probably muster some good things to say
about the tree-to-tree course. But you’ll never catch me up in those trees again, not unless I shed 50 lbs and gain an element of balance that’s eluded me for most of my life so far. To put it simply, this course is an absolute ass-kicker, a workout that will leave you feeling shredded. So, yeah, if you feel up for the challenge, absolutely go ahead and try it. For Diane and my ape-like friend, Victor Grasso, it’s no big deal but this 52-year-0ld had to be rescued not once but twice, most memorably when I attempted the zip line. Instead of safely landing on the platform, I was caught off balance and flew all the way back... to the center of the line, where I dangled in discomfort until my hero, Matt, came to my rescue. Again. Speaking off ass-kicking, I don’t usually single out individual restaurants in Cape May because there are so many good ones and I don’t care to play favorites with businesses that help pay my bills, but... the vegan/vegetarian options at Aleathea’s DO kick ass. If you’re a carnivore, try the Cape May Buddha Bowl and tell me you weren’t satisfied. And I can’t wait to try Tofu Tikka Masala.

Dish Of The Week It’s the Lion Issue. So where do we think you can get a meaty meal fit for the king of the jungle? Well, how about the restaurant that, before you take a bite, you must enter through a 100-year-old wisteria vine, overhanging trees and exotic tropical plants. The only thing that’s missing is Axl Rose welcoming you to the jungle with menus in hand ready to escort you to your table. Well, maybe not. But it was a fun thought for a second. The 410 Bank Street blackened prime rib that is applewood smoked on the bone, coated in their signature spices, pan-blackened, served with mashed potatoes and fresh corn-chili is to die for. Trust us, we aren’t lion.

Broadway & Sunset ~ 884-4543 Fabulous Food & Cool Cocktails in a Casual Pub Atmosphere!
$13.99 from Sunset Liquors 106 Sunset Boulevard Familiar notes of white peach, tropical fruit and lemon citrus to finish are coupled with a fresh acid line and a clear direction of travel and some real balance. Great with food or just on the porch!
Out of all the bars in Cape May, what’s the purr-fect place to enjoy the noble highball cocktail, which consists of Crown Royal Canadian whiskey, ginger beer and bitters? That would be The Brown Room, the first post-Prohibition bar to open on the island, located in the heart of magnificent old Congress Hall. Now this may sound ridiculous, but if a lion had an interior decorator for his den, we think it might look something like the place we like to call Cape May’s living room. It has a vibe that reminds you of the Roaring Twenties. (Roaring... get it?) With zebra-style carpet (remember, lions eat zebra) cozy sitting areas and dim lighting it’s one of the mane attractions in America’s Original Seaside Resort.

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
recall being on safari in deepest Africa, with that blowhard Ernie Hemingway. We were in the bush, it was a moonless night, and from all around came the spine-tingling cough of a hunting pride of lions. Ernie was glum in his assessment of our chances when he noticed me lacing on my handmade calfskin athletic shoes (I called them Nike and sold the brand to a fellow for a dollar, a few years ago; I feel bad for taking his money as I assume nothing came of it). “Why on earth are you doing that?” he hissed, “a lion runs far faster than a human can!” “My dear boy,” I replied, “I don’t need to run faster than a lion: I just need to be faster than you!” As it happened, I ran so fast that I accidentally caught up with a jaguar that bit my damn leg clean off! Ernie was consumed utterly, which was, I think, fitting. Cape May used to be home to America’s largest population of lions. We used to take all of the poor animals that had been
forced into taking part in circuses and other dreadful acts. We had 190 of them, and they attracted visitors from all over. Every Saturday we had a lottery where a random Shoebie was chosen to be raised aloft and thrown into the enclosure, dressed as a gladiator, or a lamb, and once in a while as Richard Nixon. Oh, the times we had! It all came unstuck because of a real asshole we got from a traveling motorcycle show. We forgot to keep tabs on Clarence, who secretly built a Wall of Death from pieces of wood and Shoebie sandals.
The crowd thought a motorcycle-riding lion was part of the entertainment, and by the time the alarm was raised, Clarence was airborne, to cheers that were only slightly turning nervous. Had he rode off into the sunset, we might have been able to contain the whole scandal, but what did he do but unlock the enclosure gate! The whole lot of them took off towards Wildwood. By the time we raised a reluctant posse, they’d consumed almost the entire population. On the plus side, most of the berserk predators were able to integrate easily into Wildwood, and the town was soon back to normal. If there’s a downside, it’s that to this day, one should not venture into Wildwood smelling of fear, or beef, or make unexpected movements, and we in Cape May send an annual tribute of 1000lbs of meat (of which 10 per cent can be comprised of tax collectors and clowns) so all considered, I think things turned out rather well. Clarence, of course, ended up above my fireplace as a warning not to make a fool of a D’Catur.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, Movies on the Beach
day at the beach isn’t always a day at the beach, especially if you have little kids. You wake up earlier than you want to and spend your day lugging stuff, keeping everyone safe, reapplying sunscreen and feeding them whenever their blood sugar dips. You’re trying to build beautiful family memories, but there’s a 90% chance someone is crying by the time you leave the sand. You’re exhausted, they aren’t, and there are still hours to fill before bedtime. The solution? Take the little darlings to the movies. Thursday can be the easiest night of your Cape May week. After dinner, take a leisurely stroll to the beach. Pack some snacks or let them buy popcorn or ice cream. Skip the chairs and bring a blanket or two. Stop at the arcade along the way and let the kids spend their allotted quarters — $5 each goes a long way; $10 if you’re campaigning to be the favorite aunt. Aim to arrive at Stockton Beach, behind Convention Hall, at about 8, when the children’s
activities are scheduled to start. Stake out a spot on the edge of the viewing area so the kids can move around without disturbing others. Take some pictures in the evening light. Then, when the movie starts at around 8:30, selflessly offer to be a backrest for your kids. Recline with your knees bent so they can lean against you. Now close your eyes for a little while, or maybe look up at the night sky and marvel at the stars. You’ll feel it if they get up. You’ve seen the movie. Relax. Nap. Your kids will enjoy the novelty of watching movies outside, and you’ll enjoy

introducing them to old favorites. Impress older kids by knowing all the lyrics to the songs in Grease, and all the best lines from Jaws. Discuss the summer romances that may be happening around you, and all the ways Cape May reminds you of Amity Island. Let the little ones explain Zootopia to you — I know the bunny teams up with the fox to solve crime, and the sloths are hilarious, but the details are fuzzy. The whole family can enjoy Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and debate whether Mr Wonka is a serial killer or just a prankster, or why Charlie’s grandfather is suddenly able to spring out of bed when there is fun to be had. If it rains, the movies will be shown inside Convention Hall, and you won’t get your nap. Jaws (1975) plays August 10, Zootopia (2016) on August 17, and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971, the Gene Wilder version) plays on August 24. Somehow, all of these movies have the same PG rating, so before you go, make sure the scheduled movie is right for your kids.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I love T-shirts but my girlfriend doesn’t. She says they make me look fat and sloppy. I don’t wear them when we go out and I don’t wear them when I go to work. I only wear them around the house and when I do errands. I’m tempted to tell her what I think of those skirts she’s so fond of that make her hips look like hoola hoops dropped around her. I know better than to go there but one of these days I fear my mouth might get in the way of my brain. How would you handle this Answer Lady – Fashion Challenged Dear Challenged There are lines that we sometimes cross as a couple, either out of concern or out of intolerance. Your girlfriend has made her opinion known — she does not think that
Wise answers to perplexing questions
is a good look for you. The beauty of men is that they so often don’t care. Comfort is the greater goal. At the end of the day, what you wear is your business. Perhaps a more tactful approach would be to tell her you have no intention of giving up T-shirts but if she would like to visit Galvanic and pick out some casual shirts, you’d be happy with that. As to her own fashion challenges, better to leave that one alone for now, but a gift certificate to Cotton Company might spark a shopping spree for both of you.
Dear Answer Lady It’s about the toilet seat being up. Our toddler is currently being potty-trained and my wife is insistent that on top of learning to use the big, scary commode, he also remember to put the seat down. We’ve had more than one argument about this and I feel, in this instance, I am right. I also think she is passively-aggressively trying to chastise me for my own toilet seat misdemeanors. What about it, Answer Lady? — Potty Peeved Dear Potty Peeved The Answer Lady is inclined to side with you, but suggests a compromise. Baby Steps. In this case, literally. Strongly suggest to her that you keep the focus on one goal at a time. The first goal — using the big, white porcelain eddy without fear of being sucked down into the vortex. Then — the manners that come with its use. And by the way, that rule applies to you as well. Lead by example. Now, in the meantime, all three of you need to chill out. Take a night and go to Sunset Beach. Play a round a miniature golf and enjoy the sunset. Life is short.

The Theater Column
L
Terry O’Brien on creating “Young Dracula” for Elaine’s Dinner Theater
ike many people my age, my sense of humor was informed by those great, early SNL casts, staying up past my bedtime to watch Monty Python on PBS with my big brothers, and, of course, Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder. You can try to find two movies funnier than Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles, but I’m not sure you’d succeed. So when last August 29 dealt our collective childhoods a blow with the passing of Gene Wilder, I decided to honor his memory and add some Wilder-isms into my performance as Dr John Watson in Elaine’s Dinner Theater production of Sherlock Holmes and the Werewolf of London. While doing bits from Willy Wonka and Stir Crazy for about 100 people night wasn’t quite on the level of, say, lighting up the Empire State Building, it was my own little way of sending some good juju out to the man who’d been such a significant figure of my childhood. Around this time I was workshopping ideas for new shows for our 2017 season. The most likely candidates seemed to be The Phantom of the Dinner Theater (I only steal from the best) and a variation on Murder on the Orient Express
called Next Stop, Stupid Town or something equally pithy (and an idea I had BEFORE Kenneth Branagh.) However, Elaine’s ownership, seeing how well Werewolf of London was going over, asked about a sequel, which became Sherlock Holmes and the Baffled Butlers and ran this spring. And with Gene Wilder so present in my thoughts, a new idea began to take shape. After a year of writing heavily plot driven murder mysteries involving the world’s greatest detective (and year of wishing I was smart enough to write heavily plot-driven shows featuring the world’s greatest detective) I decided that what Elaine’s needed for 2017 was a throwback to the shows that had cemented it as a theatrical powerhouse in the 90s; a big, stupid, zany, absurdist musical-
comedy inspired by everyone listed in the first paragraph. But I really wanted to create an homage, a love letter, if you will, to Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks. After kicking around a few ideas, it occurred to me, in this age of shared cinematic universes, the Universal monster movies of the 1950s and 60s being the first when they all met Abbott & Costello, that Young Frankenstein really should have been the Iron Man of Mel Brooks comedies, the first in a series. When this bell went off in my head, the next question became; Well, what would the most logical theme for a sequel be? Thus, Young Dracula was born. Yes, I took it upon myself to write the spiritual sequel to the greatest comedy of all time. I am nothing if not hubristic. I have done my uttermost to pack it with as many terrible puns as possible, and there are at least three “Don’t call me Shirley” jokes. It is also the most musical of musical comedies, with six featured songs. But mostly, it is my big, gooey kiss on the cheek to Mel and Gene. Young Dracula shows every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday night at Elaine’s Dinner Theater. Call 609-884-1199 for reservations.

Bird Droppings
C
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
ape May draws rare birds the way blue velvet draws lint. This truism was brought home to me on my most recent Monday morning field trip in South Cape May. Among the 60 species tallied were two juvenile white ibis. Accounted “rare to very rare” in David Sibley’s The Birds of Cape May, this species seems particularly prevalent in years when drought grips the south. The report of a roseate spoonbill at Tuckerton may also hark to a wave of southern wading birds this fall. Fall is a pretty protracted affair in these parts. It begins in late June with the first southbound shorebirds and extends into March. A cold front in February will trigger a late wave of migrating red-throated loons. Depleted food stocks farther north will force hordes of common redpoll south. A prolonged midwinter freeze can be depended upon to squeeze wintering red-necked grebes off the Great Lakes and into Cape May’s open bays and inlets. But it’s silly to speak of the end of autumn migration now. August is for begin-
nings, not endings. In the days ahead, thousands of migrating birds of prey will soar past the hawk watch platform at Cape May Point State Park and the eyes of thousands of admirers. Beginning NOW, the fields and forests south of the canal will host millions of migrating songbirds, drawn here as much by the surfeit on natural areas as by the concentrating mechanism that is Cape May peninsula. South Jersey is one giant land funnel catching and directing southbound birds to Cape May Point. The source of many
of these birds is the boreal forests of Canada. But tundra breeders like peregrine falcon figure in Cape May’s wealth of birds, too. Want to see an avalanche of migrating falcons? Be on the hawk watch platform the last week in September or first week in October. But this column was supposed to be about rarities. The tundra environment that spawns peregrines also grows northern wheatears, a rare migrant. On their way to Africa, a few of these small, beautiful thrushes take a roundabout route and now and again one finds its way to Cape May where their appearance is guaranteed to cause a stir among birders. I recall one wheatear in 1981 that gave the superintendent of Cape May Point State Park fits. In its effort to shake hordes of admirers, the bird perched on the roof of the park office, which prompted many needy birders to resort to unsanctioned measures to catch a treasured glimpse. What’s this year’s heart-stopping bird going to be? Couldn’t say. But we’re overdue for something really good. Limpkin, anyone?

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal
Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923
MISSY is a chow chow who sadly came to the shelter after living with her family for 8 years. She is house trained and has polite manners. Missy enjoys playing with her toys and running in the yard, but she is quite content to take a leisurely walk. Missy loves to take car rides and explore new surroundings. Give her a second chance and adopt today!
KARMA is a three-year-old pit bull terrier who is looking for an adult only home and would prefer no small dogs. But larger dogs are ok! Karma loves to play in the yard and she walks nicely on the harness. Karma has worked well with many volunteers and has learned many good manners. If you’re looking for good Karma, adopt today!
MARTHA is a young mastiff/boxer mix who came to the shelter as a stray. She is always smiling and eager to learn new skills that will help her to be a great and companion. She loves running in the yard and chasing toys followed by splashing in a kiddie pool to cool down. At 85 pounds, she still wants to climb into your lap and show you lots of affection.

SULLY & GINGER are Abyssinian and domestic short hair mixed sisters who are just nine months old. They have a strong sisterly bond and would like to be adopted together. Sully and Ginger are both pleasant, indoor house cats with lots of love to go around. Stop by the shelter and adopt today. Because two kitties are better than one!
PETAL is a tortoiseshell lady who, unfortunately, ended up at the shelter in the final years of her life. Although she is not young anymore, that doesn’t mean she doesn’t deserve love and companionship. She may be on her final petal, but she still has a lot of love to give to that special family who will give her a chance. Adopt Petal today!
BELLA & SOPHIE s a long-haired Persian mix who was surrendered to shelter with her daughter Sophie after their owner fell ill and could no longer care for them. Both Bella and Sophie are sweet girls that love attention, affection and are sure to brighten your day. If you’re looking for two lovely ladies, adopt Bella and Sophie today!
