Ramblings From The Editor

S

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

o we have the rightful police chief of Cape May, Rob Sheehan, still fighting his wrongful demotion through the courts, while in his chair sits a man, Tony Marino, who was all set to retire after failing to rise beyond the rank of sergeant but who grabbed the opportunity when he realized the previous mayor of this city, Ed Mahaney, was ready to pluck him from impending retirement and hand him promotion to the top job. Since then, things haven’t gone well for the CMPD. A former officer John Campbell last week pleaded guilty to stealing $105,000 from the Policemen’s Benevolent Assocation, of which he was the local president and state delegate. In a less official capacity, Campbell was also known to be former mayor Mahaney’s closest confidante. During the height of the Sheehan witch hunt in 2015, you could say that Campbell was Mahaney’s police mole. It was around then that I figured there was more to Campbell than the jovial officer who would greet me with a warm handshake

and a bunch of Policemen’s Benevolent Association cards... the ones you’re supposed to hand over with your driving license in hopes of getting off with, say, a speeding ticket. (I don’t recall ever using one, to tell the truth.) Well, turns out that Campbell, between 2012 and his retirement last year, used a PBA credit card to blow $105,000 on tropical time shares, utility bills, cash withdrawals, electronics, clothing and jewelry... and a $500 designer Christmas tree.

It sounds like Campbell must have figured out some kind of deal since prosecutors are asking for only a year in jail. As for his pension, believe it or not, that still has to be decided by a state pension board. The fact that this is even up for discussion astonishes me. A police officer loots $105,000 from his fellow officers, faces only a year in jail and might get to keep his $69,000 pension, paid for by you and I? That’s way more than the average person earns in this county for working their tail off. It’s shocking. And it ain’t over yet. I’ve been informed by three reliable sources that more shame is about to be heaped upon the Cape May Police Department... looks like an officer may be about to lose their job over some more unsavory business. Watch this space. Let’s hope Sheehan wins his job back so that this pall hanging over the department will begin to subside. Though, even then, if that happens, Marino will be able to retire with a chief’s pension. All thanks to the legacy left by Mahaney. Good job, Ed.

Dish Of The Week Revenge is a dish, well in this case, best served warm. And since it’s Robert De Niro’s 73rd birthday today, (If you were wondering why this issue is themed after him, other than the fact that he’s a great actor), we decided to highlight a dish that plays along with his first Oscar win in The Godfather Part II. De Niro learned Sicilian to play the part of the infamous Vito Corleone. With that being said, Iccara Italian Bistro makes a fantastic Sicilian calamari which is crisped then tossed with garlic, olive oil, Kalamata olives, capers, lemon and Italian chili peppers. Did we make you an offer you can’t refuse?

BEER OF THE WEEK

Broadway & Sunset ~ 884-4543 Fabulous Food & Cool Cocktails in a Casual Pub Atmosphere!

$16.99 from Collier’s Liquor Store 202 Jackson Street This wine from Paso Robles reflects a cool black fruit style. It’s a terrific blend of Syrah, Cab, petite sirah, and Malbec. Offers robust aromatics of ripe blue fruits, cherry and pomegranate with hints of a savory component.

“There are three ways of doing things around here: the right way, the wrong way and the way that I do it.” Even though this was a De Niro line in the movie “Casino”, this is exactly how Bob is off screen when it comes to his favorite drink, the classic gin martini. He claims he “will only dare take a sip if his cocktail is at the right height, the right temperature and shaken for exactly the right amount of time.” Guess you can be as fussy as you’d like if you have two Oscars at home on your shelf and starred in some of the greatest films in history. Isn’t that right Ole’ Bobby boy? Now, being the oldest bar in town, The Merion Inn is the perfect place to enjoy a classic gin martini in our charming little Cape May.

The Old Fogey

I

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

have trouble watching Raging Bull, despite it being one of my favorite movies of all time because it was I who taught De Niro to box. Actually, it was rather accidental: he was in town (he used to keep a holiday home in that unrecognized jewel of a street, Stimpson Lane) and we were drinking in The Brown Room and looking over a pile of scripts he’d been sent. He was talking about one that had caught his eye, for a tale of an aspiring florist who rises through the ranks to have a shot at the top prize: the Chelsea Flower Show. His inability to express himself through bouquets holds him back, however, and ultimately costs him everything. Bobby was quite taken by it, and asked me what I thought. Well, I slapped the script – entitled Raging Begonias – from his hands and roared my disapproval: “Look at the last time you liked a script! That piece of excrement called Rickshaw Driver! Where you were all set to play a hapless young man whose frustrations at pedaling people all over town caused him to swear one day, then retire to

the beach! I had to rewrite that totally to become a semi-autobiographical tale of my arrival in New York and my time driving a yellow cab!” I was so livid that I ripped the script into shreds and demanded a napkin, whereupon I sketched out my beefed-up version. “But I can’t box!” wailed Bobby, trying to arrange a vase of petunias on the bar. “Now you can!” I howled, and struck him on the head with a fist. Not MY fist: my nails are rather lovely and I detest having to ruin them. I used the fist of Jimmy Quinn,

an itinerant bartender and rake, through the simple ruse of whispering to Jimmy that Bobby said he was English (Jimmy thought himself quite the Irishman). Well, the pair battled for near an hour, until bloodied and exhausted, they collapsed in a heap. I poured a full bottle of malt on their abrasions and after they had stopped shrieking, on pain of me dropping a lit match on them, they were, I like to think, tougher men. And Bobby was ready to box in a movie. Of course, thanks to my harsh lessons in life, both Taxi Driver and Raging Bull were quite successful, I hear (I do not watch movies I have had a hand in, through modesty, other than Apollo 13, of course, as Bill Paxton played me rather spectacularly). Bobby never did thank me as such, but he did play me in the later masterpiece, Goodfellas, as a tribute. Also, he sold his holiday home after I sent him a telegram saying that Meet the Fokkers was such a pile of steaming offal that should he ever return to town I would set about him with my cane, and spare no quarter.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, ghost tours

h, parenting. How else can you go from superhero to ignoramus in 12 short years? In what other job are you subject to criticism from your work product? My kids insist I dressed them wrong, fed them wrong and didn’t push them hard enough. My defense is to hold a mirror up to the two perfect creatures I was lucky enough to raise. My results are outstanding, and I await my bonus. Still, criticism pops up. Most recently, the younger complained that when she was seven, I took her on the Ghosts of Cape May trolley tour. She was old enough to understand the stories and too young to reason away her fear. Unbeknownst to me, she spent the next few years convinced that our house was haunted by the builders — lovely people, who are still walking the earth, as far as I know. Fear of ghosts forced her to be brave. Sounds like a character-building event to me — parenting win. Also, those must have been memorable ghost stories. Ghost stories are good for us. We get to enjoy the rush of adrenaline without

any real danger, like taking a mental roller coaster ride. Ghost stories can offer morals or warnings, connect us to history, and make us appreciate life. I’m a skeptic, but I like the idea of ghosts popping in to revisit their homes or amuse themselves by interacting with us. After all, why should a perfectly lovely person who passes away suddenly become evil? There’s no reason to think their intentions are anything but benevolent, right? Right? You can learn more about ghosts and the rules that govern them on August 19 and 20 as Historic Cold Spring Village celebrates

Paranormal Pursuits: Spiritualism in the 1800s. Enjoy “workshops, demonstrations and tours which highlight the study of spiritualism and the paranormal,” all in the comforting light of day. Admission to the village is $12 for adults and $10 for children. Visit hcsv.org for more information. Or, come to MAC’s lecture on Ghosts and Guides on August 19 at 8:15 for stories of “unexplained occurrences inside the 1879 Physick Estate” and “EVP recordings gathered by paranormal investigators.” Admission is $25 and reservations are encouraged. Or take one of the ghostly trolley tours and decide whether I am, in fact, a terrible mother for subjecting my child to such torture. Listen to the stories of ghost hunter Craig McManus as you travel through the streets of town. Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for children. For $40, combine your ride with a lighthouse tour and decide whether you can “feel the presence of long-ago keepers” as you climb the “199 spirited stairs” to the top. Visit capemaymac.org for information on these and other spirited tours.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady My sister is getting married in the fall and is not the kind of bride who will be looking for a low-end, girls-gone-wild bachelorette party. We joke that she had another life during the Victorian era. As I am the maidof-honor, what should we do and where should we go? — Maid In Waiting Dear Maid Why not go with the Victorian channeling? First, pay a visit to Kaleidoscope which can outfit the group with the appropriate Victorian hats. Then plan a tea at the Carriage House Café and Tea Room at the Emlen Physick Estate. The Answer Lady suspects you could combine it with a tour of the estate. The day need not end with tea. Gather again at Cape May Winery for a wine

Wise answers to perplexing questions

tasting and/or book a reservation at Exit Zero Cookhouse. Make it a lovely day which your sister will remember long after the confetti settles and kudos for you for wanting to do what she would like, not necessarily what you would like. Dear Answer Lady My brother is always getting himself into a tight squeeze. Either he owes someone money or has promised to do some job for someone and taken their money and not delivered on the work. At these times, and

no other, he calls me to bail him out. When I protest that he’s a big boy and needs to get himself out of the dilemma, he says, “But we’re family. We have to stick together.” There’s no sticking when I need him to come over and help me put a deck on the house. There’s no sense of family when he fails to show up for our mother’s birthday party. BUT, I do feel guilty about leaving hanging out to dry. – A Family Affair Dear Family Tough love is tough and overcoming senseless guilt is even tougher. The next time he sends out an SOS, simply tell him you would LOVE to help him out but find yourself short on cash and you were about to ask him for money. As to the family “stick together” sentiment — that’s what barbecues are for. Pop over to West Side Market for some steaks and Duckie’s for corn and tomatoes and have the clan over. That should appease all guilt. Meanwhile, give yourself a break. You’ve obviously been there for your family and for your brother in particular. Let them/him be there for you

Bird Droppings

T

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

he Cape May Point Hawk Watch does not begin until September 1, when New Jersey Audubon staff will be on hand to tabulate migrating raptors and answer the questions of visitors. But hawks are migrating already. What you are looking for is north to northwest winds. These are the winds associated with the passage of a cold front and cold fronts trigger migration.Among these early raptor migrants will be American kestrel, our smallest falcon, bald eagle, a large plank-winged bird of prey whose white head and tail are not assumed until birds are five. Immature red-tailed hawks, without red tails are also early migrants as are osprey. If your raptor identification skills are rudimentary, you fall into a broad band of the human spectrum called “the majority.” The nice thing about Cape May is that there are dozens of experts who watch the weather in August and who can be counted upon to be on deck when hawks are flying. Sharing their expertise is something of a Cape May ethic. Don’t count on them to have an extra

set of binoculars but don’t let the absence of optics dissuade you. Many migrating hawks are low enough to be seen with the unaided eye and there are lots of other birds visible from the hawk watch platform. I’m addicted to hawk watching. A northwest wind will ferry me to the platform every time. But then as coauthor of Hawks in Flight and Birds of Prey I’m obligated to keep my edge. If you are looking for a good guide to raptor identification, I recommend, Hawks at a Distance by Jerry Liguori. Now living in

raptor-rich Utah, this Stockton College graduate was a hawk counter in Cape May back in the 80s. He is now North America’s ranking authority on raptor identification and an exceptional raptor photographer. But nothing beats real. For shear inspiration, a single kestrel framed against a cloud pocked Cape May sky bests any collection of images. Go out and be WOWED. Being in Cape May and not going to the hawk watch is like going to Washington DC and not visiting the Air and Space Museum. Beach, surf, salt air... any seaside resort can give you these. But how many can offer The Raptor Capital of North America. One. If you find yourself one set of binoculars short of need, seek the counsel of the optic’s gurus at Cape May Bird Observatory, 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point. It’s right off Lighthouse Ave and right on your way to the hawk watch platform. While you are there pick up a copy of Jerry Liguori’s book and enjoy the new trail system. Bird on!

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

MAGGIE & MARGARET are eight year old litter mates that lived in a loving home together until they were dropped off at the shelter because their family was moving and could no longer care for them. Yes, they want to be adopted together! The girls could not be more affectionate toward everyone they meet. Stop in and adopt this dynamic duo!

NIKA is an adorable 25 pound puggle mix that struts happily at your side when walking on a leash. Although she is a bit shy in the beginning, once she warms up to you, she is an affectionate little girl and enjoys pouncing on squeeky toys. She would love to be in a home with older children so she receives all the attention. Adopt this sweet lady today!

MARTHA is a young mastiff/boxer mix who came to the shelter as a stray. She is always smiling and eager to learn new skills that will help her to be a great and companion. She loves running in the yard and chasing toys followed by splashing in a kiddie pool to cool down. At 85 pounds, she still wants to climb into your lap and show you lots of affection.

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

SULLY & GINGER are Abyssinian and domestic short hair mixed sisters who are just nine months old. They have a strong sisterly bond and would like to be adopted together. Sully and Ginger are both pleasant, indoor house cats with lots of love to go around. Stop by the shelter and adopt today. Because two kitties are better than one!

SEYMORE is a tiger-striped tabby who is called Mr Fantastic here at the shelter. He is called that because Seymore is fantastically awesome. And fantastically good-looking. Just take a look at that smile! Not only is Seymore a pretty-boy, he is also charming and very sweet. If you’d like to see more of Seymore, stop by the shelter today!

ROXY is an older lady who is looking for a little peace and quiet. At her age, Roxy wants nothing more than a warm bed and some yummy treats. Not all the hustle and bustle of life that kittens are looking for! Roxy is looking for a companion who she can lay and cuddle with. If you’re looking for a laid back lady, adopt Roxy today!
