Ramblings From The Editor
T
Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright
here is one more weekend till the Labor Day holiday, a time when business owners in Cape May begin to reflect on the summer just passed. Did you do as well as last year, or the year before? Did you have any tourists from hell? Staff meltdowns? (As someone who owns a store and a restaurant, I am guessing that the answers to both of those questions are YES for most business owners, especially the restaurateurs, where staff meltdowns go with the territory — sigh.) My bottom line observation — unscientific, lacking in deep research and based on instinct — is that July’s crowds are receding and that September is starting to make up the slack. And, yes, you would be right in assuming that I hope this is the case, since our July at Exit Zero Global HQ was not bountiful. But I have spoken with a few other business owners who have similar views. And not just this past July... since we opened Exit Zero Cookhouse in 2015 there has been a surprisingly slim difference between our July and September takings.
Is this because more empty nesters (who don’t need to worry about kids skipping school) are beginning to enjoy what most locals seem to consider the best month of the year? We’ve been publishing Exit Zero for 15 summers and if you have read any of the many, many hundreds of interviews we have featured with local people, one sentiment always comes across... September is THE month to be here. Maybe the regular visitors to our shore have really been listening to the locals.
Personally, I would love to see the wealth spread all over the summer, so that those crazy dog days of August aren’t quite so crazy. This September, I’m walking the walk. I have eight of my family coming from Scotland to stay for three weeks (gulp). We’ll be enjoying the last, best, three weeks of the summer. (As we all should know, summer doesn’t end until September 22.) And I can’t wait. We’ll get to enjoy all of Cape May’s best restaurants, still open seven days (but without the August lines), I’ll get to show off our burgeoning winery/brewery/ distillery scene, which has really exploded in the last couple years. (You might have heard that Scottish people are partial to a tipple.) And I’ll get to erect my new, obnoxious 10x10 canopy on a fairly quiet beach without bugging anyone (you might also have heard that Scottish people are partial to fair skin). Note: This is the last week for Movies on the Beach; Tuesday is the last West Cape May Farmers Market of the season; and don’t miss Seafarers’ Weekend at Historic Cold Spring Village this Saturday/Sunday!

Dish Of The Week Ahoy, ye landlubbers! ARRRGGGHH you looking for a taste of the sea near a place where Captain Kidd was rumored to be? Well if you’ve heard the stories, you’d know that the Delaware Bay served as an entry point to the ports of Philadelphia... a perfect place for pirates to hide their sloops in the marshy reeds, strike the vessels and plunder their goods. From time to time, treasures wash up on the shore. But if you don’t want to spend your day digging for pirate’s booty, head on over to Harpoons on the Bay for their delicious Caribbean conch fritters and booty-ful sunset. Not to mention the pirate-friendly rum cocktails as accompaniments.
BEER OF THE WEEK
dinner from 5pm wednesday through Monday early birds specials 5-5:30pm
Broadway & Sunset ~ 884-4543 Fabulous Food & Cool Cocktails in a Casual Pub Atmosphere!
$21.99 from Collier’s Liquor Store 202 Jackson Street Beautiful aromas of baked apple and pears, pineapple, lemon and white flowers. On the palate the wine opens up with toasty brioche and baking spices, with a lush finish that is balanced with acidity and a rich creaminess.
Since it’s all about pirates this week (our tribute to the annual Seafarers’ Weekend at Historic Cold Spring Village), Nauti Spirits Distillery was the obvious choice for the location of our cocktail of the week. Their logo is a pirate for goodness sake! (And a very clever logo, might we add — look at it very closely and you’ll see what we mean.) They recently released their rum into the mix, joining the fine vodka and gin already available. Our rum cocktail of the moment is the Shunpike Punch, made with Nauti rum, lemon, lime, pineapple, orange oleo saccharum syrup and bitters. One sip and you’ll be hooked, line and sinker. Nauti Spirits is located at 916 Shunpike Road, in a beautiful, nautically themed location.

Must-Have Of The Week
Searching our favorite places in Cape May for those goodies you need to enjoy now! We went in search of some pirate-appropriate products and found the answer from the Exit Zero Store at 109 Sunset Boulevard (hey, sometimes we have to give ourselves a shoutout). The Item: Pirate pendulum clock. The Appeal: What’s not to love? This is the perfect nursery accessory for the cute lil’ pirate lover in your family (and, remember, girls love pirates, too!). Extra bonus points for the skulland-crossbones pendulum that moves with each second. It’s part of a series of fun clocks handmade in Massachusetts. The Price: $47.50

The Old Fogey
I
Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur
have no time for pirates, what with the dreadful shouting and rudeness: in that respect they are very much like Scotchmen. In fact the dreaded Redbeard was one of that very stripe, a boorish man with a tendency to hug people close and then stab them through the heart for some imagined slight. It’s why they are banned from Cape May on pain of death. Scotchmen, I mean, not pirates. Although I am not keen on buccaneers, our city has had a mutually beneficial relationship with them over the centuries, and it would be a foolish man or woman who damned them out of hand, especially given most of the fanciest buildings were bought and paid for by the long-lost treasure of Captain Kidd. Did you not know he was from Cape May? He was not, as the schoolbooks would have you believe, an oceangoing buccaneer, but a land pirate. He had a schooner on wheels that used to roam the streets, tacking back and forth and kidnapping Shoebies. Of course, some piratical pastimes were diluted a by dint of having a ship on wheels
rather than on the water: making captives walk the plank, for example, was transformed from a terrifying and fatal ordeal into an inconvenience where a captive would sustain a sprained ankle or a nasty graze. Also, Cape May traffic being as it is, most summers his ship, the Salty Bawbag would get stuck in a jam and we would be treated to the spectacle of two-score pirates sitting bored, waving as passers-by and occasionally tiring of having etchings done of them, and hacking some hapless nuisance into tiny pieces, then having to just of sit there, covered in blood, and look-
ing embarrassed. Well, to cut a long story short, and to avoid explanations as to how yours truly came to spend a year among that scurvy crew (I must add, though, that I look damn fine with an eyepatch and a gold tooth, though my insistence on bathing once a year was regarded by the others as downright louche), when one day I happened to be left in charge of the treasure chest whilst Captain Kidd and his crew had pancakes at Uncle Bill’s. Well, the sight of all that gold was too much for ole Sharky D’Catur (I needed a pirate name to fit in: I had asked for it to be Decadent D’Catur but the lads tended to pronounce it with an apostrophe after the “De” and dropped the “ade” totally in favor of a “u” which was really not the effect I was going for at all. Anyways, I of course made off with it, taking to a rowboat at the Point, and when Kidd tried to follow, his wheeled ship simply sank. leaving me, and this city, rich. Of course, the undead pirate and his crew wait under the waters, still, so I advise you not to bathe there after dark.

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, finding your religion
ape May is a natural place to seek enlightenment. The enormity of the ocean makes you examine your own insignificance. If you seek guidance on how to be a better human, organized religion may be your path. Cape May County offers several formal options, and the beach itself provides a place for quiet contemplation. Waves rolling in and out can symbolize a new beginning, or rebirth, or moral cleansing. People of many faiths use water in their religious practice. The Lenni Lenape told creation stories of a giant turtle rising out of the sea, forming the land on his back. In the Judeo-Christian tradition, God created a space between the waters “to let the dry land appear.” Jews see rain as a blessing upon the earth. Christians are baptized with water. Muslims use ablutions to prepare themselves for prayer. To Hindus, all water is sacred. Non-believers also find connection to the universe at the beach. As swimmer Diana Nyad, an atheist, once said, “I can stand at the
beach’s edge with the most devout Christian, Jew, Buddhist — go on down the line — and weep with the beauty of this universe and be moved by all of humanity.” Whatever your religion, you should feel comfortable celebrating in Cape May. There are houses of worship from LDS to Baha’i to Muslim to Hindu within an hour’s drive. Nearby, the United Methodist Church has been known as The Visitor’s Church since the mid-1800s. Cape May Lutheran reminds you that, “No matter where you’re from, we’re glad you’re our neighbor.” The First Presbyterian Church offers a celebration
service with jazz and gospel music. Cape Island Baptist cheerfully notes that attire ranges from casual to suits. Beth Judah Temple in Wildwood welcomes Jews of “all ages and stages.” For Roman Catholics, Our Lady Star of the Sea is “swept by waves” of love. The list in This Week in Cape May provides additional information. There are also special celebrations on the beach. Catholics marked the Feast of the Assumption with the Wedding of the Sea, a centuries-old ceremony which ends with a blessing and the tossing of a floral garland into the surf. On Friday, August 25, Rabbi Ron Isaacs will lead Shabbat by the Water on the beach at Madison Avenue, across from the Montreal Beach Resort, from 6-7pm. This Conservative musical service has been well attended in past years, with people of all ages sharing drums, tambourines and ancient songs. Attendees are asked to bring a “veggie/ dairy dish for after-service nosh.” In case of inclement weather, call the Montreal Beach Resort at (609) 884-7011. For information, contact lhirsch@montrealbeachresort.com.

The Answer Lady
T
he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady I’ve been dating a woman for over a year and I know she wants to get married. She doesn’t say anythingy, but keeps leaving issues of The Knot magazine around. She somehow manages to steer us into walking past jewelry stores and asks if I want to go in. I’m not even sure I want to be married at any time. I don’t want to break up with her but I have the feeling that if she doesn’t get a ring soon, that’s where we’re headed. So far, we’ve avoided the topic, but her birthday is coming up and I’m sure she is expecting a gift. I hate this pressure and it’s beginning to affect how I feel towards her. — Cornered Dear Cornered You owe it to your girlfriend to level with her and tell her there may be no future with
Wise answers to perplexing questions
you — at least not an immediate one. On her end, these passive-aggressive machinations are unfair, but all of this has come about because neither of you wants to address that proverbial elephant. The Answer Lady’s advice to you is to take her to dinner — someplace a little more casual like Lucky Bones or the Blue Pig — and hash this out with her BEFORE her birthday. And, yes, that might very well end the relationship, but perhaps the two of you need a little distance to see things in a different light.
Dear Answer Lady My children are planning a birthday dinner party for me at the Washington Inn. I cannot stress enough the fact that I do not want them buying me any presents. I never like what they buy and then they make me feel bad for not liking what they have spent too much money on. Besides, dinner is enough of a present. I have no need for anything else. What can I do because I know they will not listen to me and will go ahead and buy something and then look dejected when I am less than impressed? I hate to say it, but my children simply have no taste. — Ungrateful Mother Dear Ungrateful The answer is simple. Tell your children to go to Splash or the Whale’s Tale and purchase a gift certificate for you. This takes all the pressure off of everyone and you will surely find something elegant and tasteful. The bonus is that when you do pick something, it will have lasting significance and will truly be a remembrance of a happy day.

West Cape May honors its vital agricultural heritage with its festivals in Wilbraham Park that celebrate the fruits of the harvest. Come to town Saturday, September 2, to experience our very own TOMATO FESTIVAL. Experience Victorian elegance in one of the oldest and finest homes overlooking Wilbraham Park. WILBRAHAM MANSION, 133 Myrtle Avenue. Built in 1840 and enlarged in circa 1900, the Wilbraham Mansion, is truly a home of expansive proportions. This B&B offers so much comfort, and their 20 x 40 foot indoor heated pool represents an amenity no other Cape May, New Jersey, B&B can offer! To complete your stay is dinner at the fine establishment of THE BLACK DUCK ON SUNSET RESTAURANT, One Sunset Boulevard. It is reminiscent of an old Cape May porch, featuring a cool, casual environment. This solid but unpretentious Victorian feels much like you would expect Ernest Hemingway to pop his head out from any doorway. This BYOB gourmet bistro features fresh seafood from local waters, honey glazed duck, grilled steaks and sumptuous desserts. FREE PARKING on every West Cape May street. Visit www.westcapemaytoday.com

The Movie Column
T
“Spiderman: Homecoming” reviewed by Mike Chamberlain
hey say third time’s a charm, and that is certainly the case with this iteration of Spider-Man: Homecoming, the sixth and best movie among three franchise attempts. And thankfully, this is not the typical origin story usually involved with a reboot. What we get to see is the hero’s alter ego Peter Parker learning to use his new powers and a new suit compliments of Iron Man alter ego Tony Stark (played by the always fantastic Robert Downey Jr). What we don’t have to sit through is the death of Peter’s Uncle Ben and the “with great power comes great responsibility” speech. This time our hero is played by Tom Holland, who imbues the character with both wide-eyed wonder and the typical teen angst of wanting to be treated as an adult. Peter struggles with his newfound powers and the Stark-engineered super suit while getting the nerve to ask his crush to the homecoming dance. Peter keeps trying to prove to Stark that he’s ready to be a full-fledged superhero while
The sixth Spider-Man is among the best Stark keeps telling Peter to slow down and try being a “friendly neighborhood Spider-Man” for a little while. Now, no superhero movie is complete without a supervillain, and this movie brings us Michael Keaton as Adrian Toomes, aka the menacing mechanical winged Vulture. Toomes is a city contractor who recycles alien tech from the aftermath of an Avengers battle. He loses that job to a joint company created by Stark Industries and the federal government. He bitterly sees this as the ones who made the mess are now getting paid to clean it up.
So Vulture and the rest of his contractor crew steal and sell the alien tech into weapons to low level crooks. Homecoming really fleshes out Peter’s high school life, which at times gives the movie an almost John Hughes feel to it. There’s even more than a passing nod to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. There’s his best friend Ned (Jacob Batalon) who after finding out about Peter’s secret identity wants Spider-Man to stop by a party to say hi (and high-five him) convinced that will make him more popular. And since no high school experience would be complete without a bully, Flash (Tony Revolori) does his best to mock Peter every chance he gets. Overall Spider-Man: Homecoming has a light, plucky tone that never gets bogged down in the over-serious drama that sometimes plagues other superhero movies. In this way it comes closer than any previous film version of Spider-Man to what the actual comics feel like. So if you’re looking for a fun night at the movies you’ll feel right at home with SpiderMan: Homecoming.

Bird Droppings
F
Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu
all doesn’t officially begin until September and even many experienced bird watchers don’t don binoculars until after Labor Day. Foolish. Very foolish. You wait until Labor Day and you’ll miss some of the best of fall migration. The cold front a couple weekends ago sent a typical early season swarm of migrating warblers our way. Yellow warblers, of course, but blue-wingeds, American redstarts, worm-eating warblers and blackand-whites, too. You may not be familiar with warblers, but in quick sum, this family of New World birds fan out across North America in summer and retreat for the most part into the insect rich confines of Mexico, Central and South America in winter. Cape May is a stopover point. Mostly forest birds, warblers are celebrated for their vibrant colors and hyper activity. Dancing on twigs, flashing out of the shadows like feathered sparks, the birds are particularly prized by British birders who come from a corner of the planet where
North American wood-warblers are not. To catch a glimpse of these and other warbler migrants, try sitting in the new bird blind in the woodlands immediately east of the Cape May Bird Observatory, 701 East Lake Drive, Cape May Point. The new trail system is easy on the feet and while this little corner patch of woodland has always been known as a hot migrant trap, access has been limited and seating nonexistent. Park in designated parking areas. Keep noise to a minimum in deference to our neighbors.
Climb the stairs, turn right and descend. No fee and no advance registration necessary. Mornings are best and cool mornings just after the passage of a cold front best of all, but even on a hot afternoon, the shady confines of this little patch consistently hosts birds where other birding hotspots disappoint. If you are visiting during store hours 9-4pm go into the Northwood Center store and ask about recent sightings. Bugs? A few. But why else would insecteating birds be there? Ticks? Never found one there, and ticks love me. Enjoy the blind. See beautiful things. And for a rejuvenating moment or two stand in the path of fall migration at THE place known as the Crossroads of Migration. If you meet any British birders, you’ll find that they speak English, too. If you appear cordial they may let you borrow their binoculars, which are typically very good. You won’t need a spotting scope because the birds are close. Cameras? Sure. Who wouldn’t want to post an image of a blue-winged warbler on Facebook?
