How long have you been coming to Cape May? We’ve been vacationing in Cape May since 1990. Prior to that we stayed in Wildwood but we would always drive to Cape May to eat and drink. Who are you normally with? With my husband on vacation. However, I’ve been contracting with the Coast Guard since 1999 and have spent many days loving being in Cape May while working.

NAUTI WORD OF THE WEEK

cat. paws

Light variable winds on calm waters producing scattered areas of small waves.

Mike DeMusz Painting Of The Week

Favorite thing about Cape May? Cape May is a package. Impossible to pick just one. However, waking up and going to sleep by the ocean, the overall beauty and charm of Cape May and the restaurants. Least favorite thing? That’s easy — the fact that I can’t live there. Favorite restaurants? Tisha’s and the bar at Oyster Bay are right at the top of my list for dinner. Breakfast/brunch is fun at the Blue Pig Tavern and the Mad Batter. For dockside treats and outdoor enjoyment next to the water, we head to the Lobster House Raw Bar and over the bridge to Harbor View restaurant’s dock. Favorite places to stay? Just one: Sea Crest Inn. If you could change one thing about Cape May what would it be? Make it less of a “McMansion”/condo town.

BOOK OF THE WEEK We confer with Cape Atlantic Book Company to bring you a page turner... Out of Season: The Vanishing Architecture of the Wildwoods. Author: Mark Havens. This is a unique photographic record of mid-20th century modern motels of the seaside resort of Wildwood, aka Cape May’s noisy neighbor. This 10-year project eulogizes a bygone age that brought vacationers to stay in motels with names like Satellite, Astronaut, Bel Air, Kona Kai and Waikiki... Read it!

Our Staff Artist Mike DeMusz is creating a painting every week. Here he is at work on the latest. To see the completed work, check out the Exit Zero Facebook page. Better still, visit the Exit Zero Store at 109 Sunset Boulevard, across from the gas station. Even if this particular work is already sold, we have the whole Mike DeMusz inventory of prints here, along with other great Cape May artwork. You can call the store at 609-770-8479. We are open every single day from 10-5 (9-9 in the summer). Or buy online at ezstore.us.

Ramblings From The Editor

T

Ideas, idle gossip and occasionally important odds ’n’ ends... by Jack Wright

hat was a lovely gift from Mother Nature. Spring-type weather wafted in and ensured that our restaurants, shops and accommodations enjoyed a Presidents weekend that left previous years in the shadows. On Sunday, traffic coming into town was backed up on to the Garden State Parkway — and not just because of the roadworks on the bridge. There apparently weren’t enough spare rooms on the island to accommodate visitors, and I spoke to a couple restaurants that had record-setting days. After a summer that was far from what many of us had hoped for, this was a great early gift to our hard-working business owners. Speaking of hard-working business owners, kudos to Joe Carney, who has finally brought a polar-type plunge to Cape May. As many of you know, polar bear plunges are huge along the shore and bring in millions of dollars for local charities, as well as many buckeroonies for businesses in the offseason. This is why Joe has been trying for a few years to bring one to Cape May. He failed in

³

previous attempts because City Hall used to be run like the Soviet Politburo. If an idea wasn’t Mayor Ed Mahaney’s or City Manager Bruce MacLeod’s, it didn’t happen. I recall MacLeod telling Carney he couldn’t bring the event here because of liability issues. Typical MacLeod BS. Anyway, with the new administration in City Hall, guess what... the event is happening. The first Paddy’s Day Plunge will be held on Saturday, March 18. See next week’s issue for more details on what is going to be a fun weekend in America’s Original Seaside Resort.

On a personal level, it wasn’t the best weekend. On Sunday, I played what was only my second soccer game in the last 12 years. The last time I dusted off the cleats, two years ago, it ended in a painful pulled hamstring. This time, I swore my hamstrings would not be punished, so I spent an hour or so before the game stretching every possible way. I knew I was badly lacking fitness but figured I would ease myself into the game. And that I did, until, after about an hour or so, I lunged to stop a certain goal (by the talented Eva Dimitrov) and landed on my left ankle with such impact that I heard a bone crack. Having crawled off the pitch, close to vomiting, I lay on the ground behind the net, cursing my stupidity. This was my way back to fitness, participating in the only form of exercise I actually enjoy — I love playing soccer more than almost anything in the world. Long story short, I broke my fibula. Which is why you’ll be seeing me in a big black boot and crutches. I’d like to thank Jim Barnes for cajoling me into making my comeback. No need to feel bad, Jim. No, really, it’s fine. Jerk.

Dish Of The Week As Forrest Gump’s pal Bubba would say, “You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, sauté it. Dey’s uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan-fried, deep-fried, stirfried. There’s pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich.” Given that it’s Mardi Gras week and we’ve clearly got shrimp on our mind, head on down to 5 West Pub and order up a plate of their Gulf Shrimp Creole sautéed in a creole spiced cream sauce with mushrooms and spinach, tossed with linguini pasta.

BEER OF THE WEEK Coastal Evacuation w/ Brett Style: Bretted Double IPA ABV: 8.8% Cape May Brewing Co. For this batch, CMBC spiked Coastal Evacuation with Brett. Allowing a second fermentation to take its time to develop, we’re left with a rustic and earthy profile, expressing a more aromatic funky finish.

Open for DINNER Thursday through Monday

WINE OF THE WEEK Winner’s Tank Shiraz Australia $17.99 from Collier’s Liquors 202 Jackson Street This bold and jammy red holds up to the spiciest and most flavorful of dishes. With hints of blackcurrants, licorice and smoke, this vivacious Australian beauty is a winner in every sense of the word.

Cocktail Of The Week The Hurricane, a pink rum-filled concoction, has become the drink of Mardi Gras, mostly because it’s easily slugged back and tastes like a vacation in a glass. But THE signature drink of New Orleans is the Sazerac. Okay, so it’s not as chuggable as the Hurricane — too many Sazeracs and you’d be face down on Bourbon Street. But it’s one classy little number, dating back to the 1800s, when apothecary owner Antoine Amedie Peychaud started making cocktails for his friends with his signature bitters. So if you want to experience the authentic taste of Mardi Gras, Fins is serving up the Sazerac with Bulleit Rye Whiskey, Peychaud’s Bitters in an Absinthe-rinsed glass with sugar and flamed lemon peel for zest.

The Old Fogey

Ah, those good old Cape May days... by Jackson D’Catur

I

am not entirely convinced that America needs to be celebrating Fat Tuesday, even if we are dressing it up in that fanciest of languages, French. Not that I have anything against the French: their volatile tempers, utter lack of reason, runaway passion and tendency to riot in the streets on the flimsiest of excuses warms my heart. Also, I have very fond memories of Liberation, when I rolled through that fine nation in The Big Red One after the D-Day Landings. I also was much taken by the French Foreign Legion, and served for a time, mostly because I fancied I would cut quite a dash in that fancy hat they wear (also, being Celtic blooded it stopped the nape of my neck from going red). Even now I speak in French at times, and march in the Legion’s distinctive 88-stepsper-minute gait, giving me a little extra panache, and with the added bonus that it is a very odd and awkward walking speed for people to keep up with, and so I am avoided unnecessarily long chats with people when out for my morning constitutional.

Young Albert has his own version of that slow kilometer-eating march, too, but given a Yorkshire Terrier’s legs are around two inches long, that merely slows him to a blur. I DO attribute my extraordinary age to a French diet that consists of red wine and cheese from dawn until dusk, after which I forbid the cheese. Well, that and the fact that the actual Fountain of Youth is located in Cape May. I will not say where, exactly, as we really do not want everyone living to 800, right? As it is, our fine city has one of the most inventive and busiest forgery and

n o o s ming you.

Coa cellar near to

computing-device-hacking industries in the country, in order to keep the several hundred immortal citizens in possession of valid dates of birth and social security records. You may choose to believe me or not: if you are a native, you will nod, aware that any day soon we might invite you to join our society, If you are a visitor, all I say is, look deep into the eyes of the Cape May natives you meet, and do not blink. If you stare long enough, you will discern an old soul. Also, you will earn a hard punch on the head, as Cape May folks are not big on eye contact, unless drunk or trying to sell you something. Also, as are more likely to sacrifice strangers for a variety of crop and weather reasons (the old gods are very fussy) than let them in on our secrets but there’s no harm trying. Anyway where was I? Ah yes, Mardi Gras. Well, really, I sometimes think that most people just see it as an excuse to party and dress foolishly and really let themselves down. Which in the D’Catur Mansion, is commonly known as “every night.”

The Exit Zero Interview Michael Kline discusses Katrina, Sandy... and jazz

Jazzing up the town... New Orleans veteran Michael Kline. Aleksey Moryakov

I

t’s Mardi Gras week, so who better to chat with than Michael Kline. The Cape May native spent two decades working in the jazz business in New Orleans. When Katrina began gathering strength off the Gulf Coast in August, 2005, he packed up and left town with his 10-year-old son Miles and headed back for Cape May. Seven years later, he founded the Exit Zero Jazz Festival, only to be hit hard by Hurricane Sandy. Despite taking a severe financial hit, he’s gone on to make the Cape May event a cultural landmark. When did you live in New Orleans? I was there between 19881991 during Mardi Gras and the Jazz Fest and loved everything about the city. In October of 1992, I decided to make the move for good from Cape May to New Orleans. What were the best things about life there? Music. Food. Weather. History. Architecture. Culture. Community… I was lucky in that my work at WWOZ radio station got me into the black culture of New Orleans. My office was in Treme, one of the oldest neighborhoods. And the worst things? Poverty. Racism. Crime. Is Mardi Gras as crazy as we hear? Yep. But each neighborhood has its own thing. If you’re uptown on the St Charles parade route it’s all about friends and family, the marching bands, the floats in the parades, the brass bands, cookouts. If you’re in the Quarter, it’s all about beads and tits and some other things depending on how late you stay. For two weeks, it’s an incredible cacophony of sound, color, smells — just a complete overload of your senses. And then sit your ass down in church on Ash Wednesday. Give us an insight into your life as a jazz promoter. In 1996 I took a job as Terence Blanchard’s booking agent. I continued with my on-air shifts and producing special projects at WWOZ, but my main gig was negotiating and contracting Terence’s live performances

worldwide. That job got me deep into the jazz world, working with festival producers and club owners all over the world. I started to travel a lot. Europe, Asia, South America — I got a great view of the inside of jazz festival production that I’ve put to good use here in Cape May. Presumably you were hanging with some pretty famous people sometimes? Backstage in the jazz tent was always a party. Got to hang with Herbie Hancock, Harry Connick Jr, Wayne Shorter, Sonny Rollins, Dr John… Terence was also a film composer and we had fun with Spike Lee, Wesley Snipes, Kevin Costner, Oliver Stone, James Gandolfini, Angela Bassett. One night in the House of Blues, I ended up hanging with Steven Tyler and Jeremy Piven — can’t quite remember all the pieces of that puzzle. Tell us about the leadup to Hurricane Katrina. It was different than any other hurricane because there wasn’t a build-up. You usually track a storm for a week, right? Jim Cantore, Weather Channel... we had none of that. I went to sleep on Friday night, August 26 with a Cat 1 hitting Key West and woke up on Saturday morning to a Cat 4 monster sitting in the Gulf of Mexico. I had never, up to that point, gotten scared by a storm, but that was one long, deep, sinking feeling waking

“Whether it’s a music festival, lima bean festival, a seafood festival, Winter Wonderland, events drive business and give people who live here and visitors the feeling that this place has it going on!” — MICHAEL KLINE, EXIT ZERO JAZZ FESTIVAL up to that thing sitting off the coast. I made the decision around noon to leave for Cape May. Schools were already cancelled until Wednesday and the next weekend was Labor Day, so why not spend a week at grandma’s in Cape May? My son Miles — he was 10 at the time — and I left around 7pm on the Saturday. He packed his Playstation and we had one bag. It was quiet in our neighborhood. Pretty much everyone on our block evacuated. Got to Cape May around 7pm the next day. The storm hit on the morning of the 29th. The levee broke a couple of hours after the storm passed. Had you always planned on eventually coming back to Cape May? No, but I’m not a plan maker.

When did you first decide you wanted to do your own festival in Cape May? The day after the Cape May Jazz Festival announced they were closing down. Music is the business I’ve been in since 1994, and when Cape May announced they were going under, my first reaction was — where are my guys going to play? If the guys on my roster aren’t working, neither of us are eating — that part’s pretty simple. I didn’t want to see another festival go under. Plus, major events like the festival bring so many benefits to the town above and beyond the weekends of great business during the festival. The energy a major event injects into Cape May is real. Whether it’s a music festival, a lima bean festival, a seafood festival, Congress Hall’s Winter Wonderland — events drive business and give people who live here and people who are attending the feeling that this place has it going on! That is not something I wanted to see disappear from Cape May. You think it enhances Cape May’s reputation in the bigger world? There are roughly 150 musicians in Cape May each festival weekend. They travel worldwide the rest of the year telling people about this great event in Cape May. They’re talking about the Hawk Haven wine they had, or the Cape May Brewery beer that was the best craft

beer they’ve enjoyed. They are talking about that great chef at YB and the special meal Pete cooked up. The Squirrel Nut Zippers will forever be talking about their lobster dinner you put together at Exit Zero Cookhouse. Guy Portewig is in the Wynton Marsalis Hall of Fame after the dinner he cooked at Dave and Chris Clemans’ home. All of these things begin to add up to something that becomes much bigger than the festival itself. So, having escaped Katrina, for your first year of the festival you were hit by Hurricane Sandy. That must have been awful. Other than losing over $100,000, I felt pretty good. Got to work pretty quick trying to get that money together for the next festival. I felt optimistic because I was certain everything was here we needed to be able to pull off a great event. In a strange way, Sandy took the pressure off of us. What got done, got done. Whoever could get here had a great time. Did you ever get to a point where you thought — this isn’t going to work? A lot. I stress everything. You have to understand, too, that the Exit Zero Jazz Festival is one of the few for-profit jazz festivals in the country. There is maybe a handful in the country using this model. We do this without a net, without an endowment or a foundation behind us. We get two weekends a year to pay the bills and we work all year to open the doors each festival. After the 2015 spring event, I did say to myself that I would never go through another weekend like that again. That was the Dr John weekend. His performance was strong, as were all of the other performances that weekend. But it was a painful weekend in a lot of way behind the scenes. The production was stressful. I walked away from some good friends after that and hired a few new production crews who have been with us since. Did you have a Plan B in case the festival didn’t work out? I guess I could bartend. I am thinking about the new three-on-three basketball league Ice Cube started. I think I could still ball. You also have a production company Spy Boy. How’s that going? We’ve been working with Hawk Haven for the last few years putting on Rootstock, a really cool summer series at the vineyard. We also are now booking the Cape May Convention Hall summer series. The Exit Zero Burns Supper, I think, is ready to turn into the Northern Lights Festival. I’m really excited about what the future holds. What’s been your proudest moment so far with the festival? Every opening night is a bright moment. I look at the production crews, the volunteers, the sponsors — all of the folks who really are passionate about this festival and Cape May — and that is really kind of a cool moment... when it all comes together and the music starts. Tell us about the two festivals this year? What do we have to look forward to? I’m so deep into the spring and fall it’s hard to look up. Maceo Parker is headlining the spring fest. Everyone knows Maceo but don’t know they know Maceo. How many times have you listened to James Brown records and heard James shout “Maceo!” Yep, that Maceo. He’s heading up the Ray Charles Orchestra and the Raelettes — that is a show! I’m also looking forward to the young ’uns who will be on the main stages this year. Robert Glasper — great young artist. Plus, he’s one of the funniest guys I know. And Christian Scott from New Orleans. Both Robert and Christian will bring a new thing to our stages. And in the fall, we have two of the greatest young vocalists in the business — Gregory Porter and Lizz Wright. Can you tell us anything about any exciting future plans you have, even if they are still just dreams at this stage? I’d like to hear music coming out of every door during festival weekend. I’d love to hear music in the streets, on the beach, in the clubs. I’d love to have everyone who lives and works in Cape May coming out to the festival and inviting their friends and relatives to Cape May festival weekend. Think we can do that? interview by jack wright

Catherine Dugan’s guide to getting out there... this week, the fun of learning

rownups warned us we would miss school one day, but we didn’t believe them. Young people rarely listen when old people talk, especially when the speeches begin with “You don’t know how lucky you are.” Never mind that a free public education is a privilege denied to many, or that our own parents or grandparents, sent out to work at 14, would have gladly traded places with us. Like all kids, we were self-centered little creatures. Caught up in the early mornings, the homework, and the weird rules, we didn’t know how lucky we were. Our unwearied bodies barely noticed the perks of mandatory exercise. Our nimble minds remembered the names of the hundreds of peers we mingled with every day. Our sharp eyes were on important things, like prom dates, driver’s licenses and graduation. We may have enjoyed our brown bag lunches, shared in crowded cafeterias, but we had no desire to add lectures to them. We had yet to appreciate the fun of learning.

Now, we know that the grownups were right. We miss learning together. The MidAtlantic Center for the Arts and Humanities (MAC) can’t take you back to your breakfast club days, but they can teach you a little something while your enjoy your peanut butter and jelly. Lunch and Learn is a series of lectures offered Wednesdays at noon through March 29. Topics range from the music of Sinatra to the nature of Victorian medicine, and the instructors are experts with a variety of presentation styles. On March 1, Mary Stewart presents

“The Victorian Woman: Life in a Cocoon,” exploring the stifling, sheltered lives of Victorian women. Ginger Killino talks about the women who shed that protective cocoon on March 8. One of those women was Dr Anna Hand, Cape May’s first female physician, who will discuss Victorian medicine on March 15. On March 22, Dr Leonard Smith discusses British writers of the Victorian era. Rich Chiemingo finishes the lecture series with a presentation on the music of Frank Sinatra. MAC is committed to promoting cultural enrichment in Cape May, and this lecture series is popular with residents and visitors. More information is available on capemaymac.org, or by calling (609) 884-5404. Admission is $5, free for MAC members. You can attend just once, or go every week. Beverages are included. Pack yourself a bag lunch and come to the Carriage House of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington Street, for a little science, or history, or culture. There’s no homework, and the teachers won’t give you detention.

The Movie Column

A

Review by Gayle Stahlhuth of East Lynne Theater Company

t 2:49pm on April 15, 2013, Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaey placed two homemade bombs 210 yards apart near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. These exploded 12 seconds later, killing three people and injuring 300. The country followed the news about the victims, the chase, and Dzhokhar hiding in the boat in a backyard in Watertown, Massachusetts. Those who remember the news will probably recognize several characters introduced at the beginning of Patriot’s Day. A young couple, played by Christopher O’Shea and Rachel Brosnahen, debate about what to do on their day off. They end up watching the race near the finish line, and were two of several who lost limbs. Sergeant Jeffrey Pugliese (J. K. Simmons) is seen doing his daily routine at the Watertown police station. We meet police sergeant Tommy Saunders (Mark Wahlberg) the night before the explosion, and then he pops up everywhere. So much of this tragedy was discussed and

Mark Wahlberg in Patriots Day written about, how could we all not know Saunders? The reason is Wahlberg’s character is a compilation of several brave men. This is a major flaw in a film that otherwise seems to be so accurate in many details. Others had brief screen time and made the most of it — Kevin Bacon as Special FBI Agent Richard DeLauriers and John Goodman as Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis are but two examples. Nonetheless, director Peter Berg keeps

the suspense going. One of the best sections reveals the absolute confusion of those at the finish line after the explosions. Then, quickly, people start helping each other and the ambulances arrive. The FBI turns a warehouse into mission control with people pouring over camera footage looking for suspects, as the FBI and the police work together. The immediacy is palpable. Another tale interwoven into this film is that of Dun Meng (Jimmy O. Yang), who is introduced before the race seen talking to his parents in Asia about his new SUV. Here’s the story that didn’t make the news and is the most nailbiting of all. The Tsarnaey brothers highjacked his car, seating him next to Tamerlan (Themo Melikidze), who’s driving. Because Dun Meng escapes, he was able to give the police the GPS tracking number of his vehicle, which led to the police stopping the vehicle in Watertown. The bothers had loaded the car with bombs and were headed to Times Square.

The Answer Lady

T

he Answer Lady invites inquiries from gentle readers on all manner of relationship quandaries, matters of the heart and ethics. If you’d like to send a query, write to info@exitzero. us. Or, simply sit back, enjoy a cup of coffee and contemplate the wisdom herein. Dear Answer Lady Valentine’s Day has come and gone and my boyfriend of three years not only did not propose, he asked me to pay half the dinner tab because he “was a little short.” I noticed he wasn’t “short” when it came buying that new amp for his electric guitar. He definitely was talking marriage at Christmas and I don’t know what I’ve done wrong or what has happened since, but he is different and has been ever since he brought up the marriage topic. Do I confront him on this? Punish him? Suffer in silence? What should I do? — Hanging in the Balance Dear Hanging What you do is move on, and stop hanging. He clearly has had second thoughts and needs time to think. Meanwhile, even

Wise answers to perplexing questions

you can see you are not a priority for this man, which makes him not worthy of your devotion. Let go of this negativity and go in search of someone worthy of your love. Start by exfoliating yourself. Gather up your girlfriends, call Accents on Beauty and set up a Grand Girls Getaway, making sure to include a mini-facial. While you’re at it, pop by Sunset Liquors and bring a couple bottles of champagne. Then, take a break. Rebounds can be just as negative. Give yourself time to heal.

Dear Answer Lady My best friend and I are not getting along. The source of the trouble is her exboyfriend. They were broken up at least six months before he and I started dating. I was not forthcoming when she suspected something, but I wasn’t sure that the relationship would stick. We’ve been friends since grade school and I feared losing her friendship, which means more to me than anything. But things are tense and I don’t know how to make it right. — Confused Dear Confused Are you serious? Things would be tense if you were the Answer Lady’s BFF, that’s for sure. Where is your loyalty? And how much can this man mean to you if you are willing to give him up? The question you need to answer is, why didn’t you say anything? When you have the answer, call your friend. Meet at Fins for a long lunch, which you will pay for. Be deadly honest with your girlfriend as well as with this man. It doesn’t sound as though you are committed to him, so why jeopardize a lifelong friendship?

I

Dispatches from the nation’s birdwatching capital… by Seymore Thanu

t was the most simple but affirming of pronouncements. Welcome, too, since I’m about bad-newsed out. But wanting to gain some sense of how the natural order was dealing with our changing political universe I took my question outside. There, seated atop the church steeple, were two Fish Crows. They have not been in town since last November. Fish Crows? Yes, they’re closely related to American Crows but smaller, sleeker, less coarse and more coastal. When Noah wanted to test the waters he sent out a dove. Me, I just step outside and read the tea leaves. Whatever Ma Nature is dealing is fine with me. This time it was Fish Crows, back for another breeding season. The pair began their ritual by standing tall and dueting the classic Fish Crow denial, “Uh, uh.” Translated, this means, “Hi, Pete, we’re back. Spring’s coming.” Not being on Twitter, crows still rely on verbal communication. Red state, blue state, stocks rising, stocks falling, judicial branch at loggerheads with the executive branch, it’s all the same to the natural

world. One season ends, another begins. No matter the state of the union, realize that in a tree very near you sap is rising, buds are swelling and in a few short weeks the first flowers of spring (probably dandelions) will be blooming. Me? I love dandelions. Above all things, Ma Nature prizes diversity. She considers the bland uniformity of suburban lawns an affront to the natural order, so uses the wind to sow seeds of dissension. Every sassy little dandelion poking out of the bland green puddle of uniformity that is a suburban

yard is a token of Ma Nature’s resistance. A bright yellow Uh, uh.” But, you lawn firsters are thinking... what would robins do without lawns?” They would strut their stuff through last year’s leaves, except you raked and piled them on the curb. It’s the earth worms they’re after — the ground cover hardly matters. So don’t despair you citizens of the earth, a new spring is upon us. The Fish Crows have spoken and while their call might sound to us like a denial, it’s actually an affirmation, a promise, a wakeup call from Ma Nature to you. Uh, uh — an affirming denial which is just the opposite of an alternative fact. Now, bring on the dandelions. It’s time to spice up the unnatural order. At the very least, a banner year for dandelions will bring thousands of jobs back to the lawn care industry, providing there are any workers to take them. The Dandelion Rebellion. Remember, you heard it here first. Now, repeat after me: “Uh, uh.” And remember, there is nothing more American than dissent. It is, after all, what we were founded on.

Three beautiful dogs from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

KIKI is a seven year old rottweiler and labrador retriever mix who is in need of some TLC. He would be best in a home with older children and no other pets. Kiki wants all the attention and cuddles! If you have a nice quiet and loving home, give this cutie a chance at happiness. Give this pup on home and adopt today!

ZEKE is a young shiba inu mix who lived with another dog in his previous home, so no need to worry about owning another pooch. Zeke is also crate trained, which makes transitioning into a new home much smoother. He already knows how to sit when asked but forewarning that he will expect a treat afterwards! Adopt Zeke today!

EMMY is a 10-year-old labrador retriever mix who was found walking on the street one day. She is a sweet and well-mannered girl who can easily live with cats, dogs and kids. Emmy enjoys meeting new people and will show you with an abundance of kisses! Stop by the shelter and give this loving pup a chance to bring you happiness!

Enrich Your Life... Adopt An Animal

Three beautiful cats from the Cape May County Animal Shelter and Adoption Center... call 465-8923

MARY is more like a grandmother these days. She spends most of her day watching people whiz by hoping that one day she can sit in the sunlight again. Mary is loving and gentle and looking for a companion of similar age that she can cuddle up on a lap with. She qualifies for Seniors for Seniors so if you are 62 or older fees are waived!

GIGI came to the shelter absolutely terrified but has since become much more comfortable being around people. Although she still has some trust issues with being picked up, she will let you pet her all day long! All she needs is a little more time and someone to warm up with and she will be the best kitty anyone could ask for!

ALEXIS came in after living on the streets with her brothers and sisters. She was used to the life of playing and living free. Now that she is at the shelter, Alexis is patiently waiting for a home where she has the freedom she once had. Be the one who frees this kitty and she will forever be your loving companion. Stop by the shelter and adopt Alexis!

My Seller Clients Said: “Heijung was able to quickly assess our housing needs and only showed us homes that fit that need. When we finally settled on a different home, Heijung was instrumental in satisfying demands from the insurance and mortgage companies on our behalf due the great distance between our primary home and secondary home in West Cape May. She clearly went the extra mile for us for which we are truly grateful. Without her help, satisfying closing requirements would have been extremely difficult for us. Heijung is a lovely, caring woman that anyone would be proud to call a friend.” Jackie M.
